I enjoy the personal contact with my patients so much that I’ve decided to consolidate my group of practices so that I can be available more regularly at each one and reduce my office-based time. I’ll always find time for you. I’ve moved the practice from Forest Hill due to the expiry of the premises’ lease and sold my Streatham practice. To enhance the group, we’ve since acquired Banks Opticians in Petts Wood, a practice with an

Take good care of your 2 year Guarantee spectacles! With any spectacles you buy at Steven Harris Opticians.
At Steven Harris Opticians, we ensure that our patients’ spectacles give them the best vision. “We encourage you to pop back to get your glasses checked, re-adjusted or even ‘deep-cleaned’ using ultrasonic cleaning machines.” “You can do a lot yourself to keep your glasses in optimum condition,” Steven points out. “We offer advice when you collect your new glasses and all patients receive a good quality cleaning cloth and a hard, protective case with their new glasses. “Even paper tissues can scratch lenses, particularly those with anti-reflective coatings, so we recommend using a proper lens cleaner and polishing with a non-scratch, micro-fibre lens cleaning cloth. “Protect your spectacles and you’ll see the difference. Literally!”

NEWS Maui Jim arrives with style Maui Jim sunglasses, with their unique blend of style and advanced technology, have just arrived at Steven Harris Opticians in Banstead – and are making a big impression. Maui Jim began in the 1980s selling a small line of sunglasses on the beautiful beaches of Maui, Hawaii. It has gone on to patent its PolarizedPlus technology and become America’s fastest growing sunglass company. Glare is everywhere, even on hazy days, but ordinary polarization only blocks horizontally reflected glare. Maui Jim’s PolarizedPlus technology, however, cuts out glare from all directions.
Patented multilayer technology puts nine layers of protective elements between your eyes and the sun's rays, and lenses come in three colours: Maui Rose offers high-performance vision for golfers or skiers, Neutral Grey’s maximum glare reduction is great for fishing or sailing while High Contrast Bronze is for everyday outdoor wear. The popular styles are all backed by solid warranty protection and customer service assurances. They include rimless and classic frame shapes, sport styles, frames in Flexon memory metal, top-ofthe-line titanium and stainless steel, with a choice of polycarbonate or glass lenses.
“This is classic style with a modern twist. They’re brilliant for driving,” says practice manager, Lydia Wilson. (See feature, pages 8-9)
Refurbishment programme completed West Wickham
The programme to refurbish our practices is now complete. Locksbottom, West Wickham and Penge have all been refurbished and Banks Opticians, our newly acquired practice in Petts Wood, has also undergone a major refit. “The work is more than cosmetic,” points out Steven. “I’m investing in the fabric of the buildings. Air conditioning creates a more comfortable environment for patients and staff and by upgrading the technology in our consulting rooms we can further improve the quality of
our eyecare. “The feedback we’re getting is really positive. Patients like the more spacious layouts, generous dispensing areas and understated decorative finishes.”

NEWS Revolutionary new antibacterial contact lens case The advanced new MicroBlock antimicrobial contact lens case eliminates the contamination caused by rinsing lens cases in tap water, something 81 per cent of contact lens users do. The lens case is made from a special plastic infused with silver ions. These attack the harmful bacteria and microorganisms present in tap water, killing them on contact and prevent the growth of yeasts or moulds. Contamination of lens cases occurs with as many as four out of five contact lens wearers and it can cause discomfort and possible infection. “Using MicroBlock’s new moisturising, pro-vitamin B5 enriched Focus Aqua solution with the case also helps contact lenses resist the effects of dehydration and maintain their moisture balance by creating a protective barrier,” says Steven Harris. “The dual benefits are increased wearing comfort right through the day and improved hygiene.”
Sponsoring Kent Champions! When Beckenham Ladies first eleven hockey team asked Steven Harris to sponsor them last summer they were stuck in the Kent Premier League after years of trying for promotion. Seven months later, they were champions of their league earning direct promotion to the prestigious East regional division (a bit like the Football Conference). Beckenham had won all but one of its league matches, reached the Kent Cup final against Canterbury and only narrowly lost out to Bolton for a place in the semi-finals of the National Hockey Association Vase competition. Captain Louise Bartley thanked Steven Harris Opticians for its sponsorship. “It’s been really helpful, and your name’s

been seen all over Kent!" she points out. And among the Beckenham players is BBC Newsround presenter Lizzie Greenwood who wears contact lenses from Steven Harris Opticians. "We had a fantastic season and I can't wait to play in East now," she says. www.beckenhamhockeyclub.co.uk

It’s in the Why are designer products so coveted? It’s the exquisite detail and ideas incorporated in everyday items – even spectacle frames – and the unexpected use of materials and craftsmanship. Extravagant hinge details, subtly crafted earpieces, the temple as a design statement or a distinctive eyewire line enhancing a classic shape. Wearing something striking makes you feel good. Maybe it gets you noticed.
But sometimes enjoying the quality – ‘just knowing’ – gives you the boost. That’s a special feeling. Steven Harris Opticians gets the latest designer collections before most and we are constantly bringing in new frames. In fact, the discounted designer frames advertised at some multiples are usually past seasons’ ‘unsolds’! And remember, with our 0% finance, wearing the current season’s styles need not break the bank.

preview a great success! Outside, it was a wet and windy late winter’s evening. Inside, the sun was shining big and bright! Steven Harris Opticians Banstead’s exclusive new season sunglasses preview evening was buzzing. A packed house of invited guests enjoyed a glass of wine, some nibbles and a little music as this year’s Fendi, Police, Swarovski, Chanel and Maui Jim sunglasses were unveiled. Representatives from the featured brands had taken over several display racks, replacing the usual frames with their new ranges, while Practice Manager Lydia Wilson and her team were on hand to refill glasses and offer assistance and advice as people tried on the new sunglasses and compared notes. Many were so impressed that they bought sunglasses there and then. “It’s been a great success and a lot of fun for everyone involved,” Lydia declared. “The reps were pleased with the evening and even Mike, our photographer, had a procession of people demanding to be photographed.” “That’s definitely not typical!” says Mike.
“People tend to clam-up when a photographer’s around. But not tonight! They were having a ball.” “We’ve got a great team,” recognises Lydia, “and our new Optometrist, Duncan Trew, is enjoying the contrast between his last position on London’s exclusive Sloane Street and Banstead’s friendly, village feel. This is a surprisingly busy practice, and even more so since the M&S Food Store opened opposite. “More and more families are coming in at weekends and younger people are noticing the names like Emporio Armani, Nike-Flexi, and FCUK that we stock. And sunglasses are massive here all year round!”

Brothers prefer contact lens option to Russian surgeon

Images from a corneal topographer showing a normal eye (above) compared with an eye with kerataconus (right)
When Mikhail Mirianshvilli was told by doctors in Moscow that he would have to be given a second corneal graft for his keratoconus and that a contact lens could not be fitted, he turned to his brother Gela for help. His keratoconus had been treated differently, without surgery. Gela had moved to Edenbridge in Kent from Georgia, formerly part of the Soviet Union, some years ago. He had been successfully fitted with contact lenses at Steven Harris Opticians’ Welling practice

after this option had been turned down by specialists at Moorfields Eye Hospital. They also preferred the surgical route. Keratoconus is a condition where the cornea bulges forward. Not uncommon in males, the resulting poor sight cannot be corrected with spectacles. Specially fitted contact lenses help to manage the condition. After speaking to Steven Harris who assured him that he would do everything in his power to help, Gela arranged for his brother Mikhail to stay
with him in Edenbridge for two weeks. Although Mikhail could not speak a word of English, experienced Beckenham Contact Lens Optician Anna Davies was able to find a successful contact lens solution. “Using our corneal topographer,” Anna recalls, “I could analyse the distortion of Mikhail’s cornea with a high degree of accuracy and supply a specially made contact lens. Mikhail left here with perfect vision and no need for surgery. He went back to Georgia a happy man!”
Enhance your vision and your lifestyle! Our close-up on progressive contact lenses There is a lot of patient interest in progressive contact lenses among presbyopes, the forty-plus age group. Giving improved near, distance and intermediate vision to enhance both your vision and lifestyle, they use several different technologies – all of which work in a different way to varifocal spectacle lenses. As an independent optician with a wealth of contact lens experience, we are able to fit and supply all different types of progressive lenses. We will also take the time to find the lens that works best for individual patients. Multiple opticians are usually restricted to using preferred suppliers. You will be surprised at how competitive our contact lens prices are. Our progressive contact lens schemes are around £25 per month and include regular aftercare that is second to none. CooperVision

Taking Vision Aid to
Africa Optometrist Karine Girard-Claudon at Steven Harris Opticians in Penge was part of a team of six optometrists and two dispensing opticians to visit Burkina Faso, close to Africa’s Ivory Coast, on a Vision Aid Overseas project. The team saw 1,800 people over two weeks at three remote clinics in the east of the country where eyecare is not generally available. “Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world,” explains Karine, “and since my training in France I’ve wanted to do something to make a difference there. This was my second trip – and I’ll be going back again. “We carry out basic eye examinations and dispense unwanted spectacles handed in by wearers in the UK. There’s

a great feeling of satisfaction in helping these people see again. Older people can look after their grandchildren again, for example, or help out in other ways. “Another grateful patient had been unable to see since a cataract operation but I was able to restore his sight with a high prescription lens. He was overjoyed to be able to work and read his Bible again.” Sadly, not everyone could be helped: “We were too late to help a 24 year old man with advanced glaucoma. He was already blind. We could refer patients with severe problems to a hospital many miles away, but there was no guarantee that they could even get there,” she admits. For the majority, though, the improvement was immediate. “We don’t realise how fortunate
we are to have the quality of eyecare that is available in the UK right on our doorstep.” •You can make a huge difference by recycling your old glasses. Simply bring them in to your local Steven Harris Opticians. Or you can make a donation. For further information, visit
