From the emperors of China - great intercessors between Heaven and Earth -, who considered it a natural jewel, up to Cartier and the leading London and New York jewellers who sublimated it in the 20th century in the Art Déco creations inspired by the Chinese taste, jade remains this eternal and mythical stone, an object of fascination and absolute power for the sovereign. Some 330 exceptional pieces have been assembled for the first time in France, coming from 15 prestigious national and international institutions including the Taipei National Palace Museum, which is lending almost a third of the works on display. A unique opportunity for the MNAAG to present this “beautiful stone”, “the image of goodness” for Confucius, and unfold the millennial history that, since the Neolithic Period up to the 1920s, has constantly pondered over its beauty, its virtue, its symbol and its prestige. Curated by Marie Christine Rey, conservator at the musée national des arts asiatiques, Guimet and Huei-Chung Tsao, head of research.

Exploring the evolution of Italian twentieth-century jewellery from 1900 until 1990. Various chapters in the book are dedicated to NeoHistoricism, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, to the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and ultimately from the 1960s to the 1990s. Alongside the works, many preparatory drawings from the archives of prestigious jewellers and private collections are featured, including Mario Buccellati, Alfredo Ravasco, the Musy family from Turin, the Petochi family from Rome. Particular attention will be paid to the 1960s and 1970s as they marked the birth of the new Bulgari style. This section features works created by the jeweller Mario Masenza in collaboration with painters and sculptors such as Afro, Cannilla, Capogrossi and Uncini, and the “new jewels” initiated by the brothers Arnaldo and Giò Pomodoro. During the 1980s and 1990s we have to mention the creations by Pomellato, Giò Caroli and Rivière. With biographies of all the Italian jewellers and goldsmiths mentioned within, and many previously unpublished images .

With views often comprised largely of air and water, light and its reflection, there is a sense of placelessness to Elger Esser’s landscapes—beaches, wetlands, riverbeds, and valleys—despite his lending of location details to the titles. Such places offer up a low, straight horizon that is, alongside Esser’s signature coloring, one of the most striking details of the resulting image. His most recent series presents landscapes and places on the Lebanon coast: En Naqora, Saida, Enfeh; along the river Nile in Egypt: Aswan, Luxor, Salwa Bahry, El Quarwad; and Israel: Sea of Galilee, Akko. As in his previous series taken in Italy and France, his photographs pay tribute to the universal lure of a seemingly infinite horizon and ultimate calm in the foreground. Elger Esser, born in Stuttgart in 1967, grew up in Rome and studied with Bernd Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He has exhibited internationally, including New York, Rome, Paris, Madrid, Hamburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Munich.

Giovanni Gastel, by Germano Celant, presents the creative path of the Milanese photographer through the intertwining of his professional and biographical events, by making reference to the international fashion scene and its complex communication system as well. The ‘imaginary’ journey that Gastel has developed through magazines – from Vogue Italia to Harper’s Bazaar – advertisement campaigns – from Dior to Guerlain – exhibitions – from Gastel per Donna to Maschere e Spettri – is displayed through the reconstruction of forty years of experimental and commissioned work, in which ‘serial’ ensembles and individual products highlight the features of his storytelling, his unique use of light and of the comparison between people and objects. The goal is to document his operating method, based on the analysis and presentation of a subject in series: still life, portrait, and research and fashion shot.

“My style is unique and often pertains to portraits of homeless people. My signature is visible in the treatment of light and shade, in the sober, frontal framing, with dark monochrome backgrounds. The people that attract my attention are most often outcasts: men and women excluded from social activity. Instinctively, I am attracted by these unusual characters, outsiders whose tragic personal stories are devoid of the niceties of social decorum. Their faces reveal a sort of timeless suffering: hardship has become a way of life…..Money spoils people, makes them docile and less authentic. The people outside of our system are survivors. They have to survive and their everyday lives as survivors are visible on their faces.” -From the introduction

The book allows a comprehensive overview of Hans Eijkelboom’s work that he has developed continuously for more than four decades with a scrutinizing look at “human identity”. His origins lie in Concept Art of the 1970s with its new medial understanding of photography. While the artist in his early series has sometimes presented himself in dialogue with other people, he now considers the streets of major international cities as his ideal studio. Thousands of aspects and views of humans are on offer: men, women, young adults, children; people speak to him via their appearances and make it more than worthwhile for him to draw attention to them, and to combine them in image series under specific aspects. This volume, which for the first time gathers an overview of 60 major series of works, has been developed personally by the artist. Hans Eijkelboom was born in 1949 in Arnhem. He has been invited to documenta 14 in 2017 in Athens and Kassel, as one of the most important contemporary Dutch artists.

On March 11th, 2011, an earthquake struck Japan. The subsequent tsunami swept through towns in the northeast of the country, destroying virtually everything in its path. Naoya Hatakeyama, whose photographic work has reached international fame and who is considered as Japan’s most prominent photographer, experienced a personal connection to the destruction, in which he lost his mother and the family home. In Kesengawa (Light Motiv, 2013) he told the story of his painful journey to his ancestral home in the aftermath of the tsunami, confronting pictures taken between 2002 and 2010, with those taken after the earthquake. In Rikuzentakata, Naoya Hatakeyama continues his testimonial work as new landscapes emerge beneath his eyes. The French writer, Eric Reinhardt, describes the sheer intensity of the images: “it is great art, it’s impressive, we feel the same strength of the pain, the same power, the same deep need as in his first images of the cataclysm, but domesticated, refined by time, oriented through patience toward greater artistic complexity.”

This important and disturbing photo book shows more of North Korea than any other publication has done before. Instead of the parades and mass events of official DPRK propaganda, it shows how people live their daily lives against the backdrop of totalitarian ideology – lives of a bizarre otherworldliness within the 21st century. This selection of photographs, made by DPRK watchers over the past decade, not only has a documentary value; the lines and colours of architecture, landscape and the calligraphy of the ubiquitous slogans and announcements are often strangely aesthetic. With informative texts on subjects such as the rise of the informal economy, traffic, agriculture, drills, work, living with propaganda etc.

This was an enormous problem for me... Polaroid was my life... But I was determined... I wasn’t going to give up..... I now create a new generation of chemical Polaroid film that dialogues with iPhone, Leica SL... it’s a real spectacle... the show goes on... technical innovations energise me... it’s as if I’m starting from zero but with all the history of photography behind me on both a technical and creative level.…A magical dream ...the story of a life in 300 pages, brimming with love and photography... Montmartre is without doubt one of the emblematic areas of Paris. From the early days in the story of cinema until now (from Lubitsch to Jeunet), its charm and history have excited the interest of film makers, both French and international. Montmartre in effect comes to life, through films which transform its unique setting, and becomes one of the actors in its own right of the cinematographic work. The catalogue, Montmartre, décor de cinéma, evokes in a geographic and dreamlike itinerary, the different locations for filming (Blanche and the Moulin Rouge, la Place Pigalle, Barbès, the SacréCoeur, the steps up to de Montmartre...). Numerous films have paid hommage to the cinematographic qualities of one of the most fascinating of film settings. Film posters, set designs and maquettes, photographs, costumes and scenarios complete the picture of this mythic quarter, which has played such a part in the world of cinema.

May 2017 9783829607964 | ÂŁ38.00 Paperback | 386pp | 320 x 245 mm 118 col ills Rights: UK & Eire only.

One of the most beautiful books on the history of fashion ever produced is now back in print. Swedish by birth, Parisian by inclination, and American following her 1950 marriage to Irving Penn, Lisa Fonssagrives was, for three decades, the most sought-after model of fashion photography. Born in Sweden in 1911, she studied art and dance in Berlin before emigrating to the US in 1939. She posed for Man Ray, Erwin Blumenfeld, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Norman Parkinson, Richard Avedon, for her first husband Fernand Fonssagrives, her fellow European immigrant Horst P. Horst, and, of course, her second husband Irving Penn. She died in New York in 1992. Compiled and arranged by fashion photographer David Seidner in 1997, the book draws upon a collection of photographs which once belonged to Lisa Fonssagrives. It is an opulently produced homage to the first supermodel in the history of fashion and a nostalgic look back on the Golden Age of fashion photography in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.

May 2017 9783829607445 | £58.00 Hardback | 386pp | 320 x 270 mm 275 col ills Rights: UK & Eire only.

François Berthoud is one of the most original fashion illustrators of the late 20th and early 21st century. More than drawing illustrations with pen or pencil, Berthoud likes to sculpt, scrape, scratch, and dig them out of different materials (wood, linoleum, pressed paper, celluloid film). Like a woodcutmaker or a goldsmith he creates matrixes in which he then transfers the figures he has sketched on paper, reducing them to the essential. Hailed by avant-garde designers for his elegant sense of detachment and a sharp sense of irony, Berthoud ennobles things that seem marginal (a glove, a scarf, a high heel, the tip of a boot) by turning them into archetypes. Informed by a visual culture rooted in conceptual art, he produces images of the female form that possess an exacting precision and are imbued with latent eroticism. Born in Le Locle, Switzerland, in 1961, studied Graphic Design in Lausanne before opening a studio in Milan. His work has appeared in Vogue, Numero, The New Yorker, Harper’s Bazaar, and Interview.

The American collector, Thomas S. Kaplan has brought together, under the name of the Leiden Collection, one of the most complete collections of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age in private hands. The highlights of the collection are the “fine painters” of the Leyden school, such as Gérard Dou and Frans van Mieris. There are also a number of paintings by Rembrandt (at the present time, the most important collection of the artist’s work in private hands) and several in the style of Rembrandt. The collection also includes major works by Jan Steen, Jan Lievens and Gérard ter Borc. To mark the occasion of the gift to the Louvre by Thomas S. Kaplan of a painting by Ferdinand Bol, Eliézer et Rébecca, the museum is presenting a selection from the Leiden Collection. This exhibition will serve as a reminder that Dutch painting, often seen as crude or down to earth or “bourgeoise”, at the same time has a wider range of styles from the satirical to the solemn.

The catalogue of the major exhibition at the Louvre which will run from 20th February to 22nd May 2017, travelling to the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin and the National Gallery of Art, Washington. Vermeer was famously described as the Sphinx of Delft by art critic Théophile Thoré-Bürger, when he presented the painter to the world at the end of the 19th century, establishing the artistic personality of Vermeer as an enigma. The myth of the solitary genius has remained. Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) did not however arrive at his level of mastery and creativity by remaining cut off from the art of his time. This exhibition shows, by means of comparisons with the works of other artists of the Golden Age, the place of Vermeer in a network of painters, specialising in the representation of scenes of everyday life, who admired each other, inspired and revitalised each other. It will feature 14 of the major paintings from the 37 known works of the master of Delft. A unique and exceptional artistic event such as Paris has not seen since 1965.

‘Having some genius he was instructed by … his uncle’(George Vertue, Notebooks, 1746) This book reveals the extraordinary artistic relationship between Canaletto (Venice 1697–1768) and Bernardo Bellotto (Venice 1722–Warsaw 1780): from the speed with which the exceptional young nephew learned from the teachings of his uncle – leading him to become his alter ego in works for English collectors – to the end of their direct relationship, with Canaletto in London and Bellotto in European capitals such as Dresden and Warsaw. Particular attention is paid to the interests developed by Bellotto on his travels: his rigorous perspectives and precise rendering of architecture, landscapes and portraiture, modern themes that differentiate him significantly from his uncle, who clung to the more splendid and idealised eighteenth century. The recent rediscovery of the inventory of goods from Bellotto's house in Dresden – included here – finally offers a key to understanding the culture and personality of an artist who was one of the eighteenth-century’s most restless and free.

Isabel Alexander Artist And Illustrator By Janet McKenzie

January 2017 9781527203624 | £20.00 Paperback | 140pp | 270 x 210 mm 121 col, 4 b/w ills Rights: Worldwide

This overdue and generously illustrated book traces the life and work of Isabel Alexander (1910-1996). It coincides with a major retrospective exhibition at the Mercer Gallery and the acquisition of images of many of the artist’s works by the Bridgeman Library. Like many women artists of her generation, Isabel Alexander struggled for recognition in a field that was overwhelmingly male. Yet her skills in drawing and painting, honed by her rigorous 1930s Slade training, melded with fierce independence and a delight in experimentation to give her work energy, flair and distinction. After a period working in documentary film, drawing and lithography provided the media for her own documentary response to people and conditions in the South Wales coalfield during the desperate wartime years before nationalization.  She then moved into book illustration before turning to paint, colour and form, producing distinctive landscapes and seascapes interspersed by finely-drawn portraits, closely-observed plant studies that prompted one reviewer to call her ‘a British Georgia O'Keefe’, and striking forays into abstraction.

JOHN RULE Spring 2017

Lili Ország (1926–1978) is one of the most important and distinctive figures in modern Hungarian painting. This first comprehensive review of her life’s work, taking place at the Hungarian National Gallery, commemorates what would be the artist’s 90th birthday. “The walls are inside me,” said Lili Ország, and throughout her entire oeuvre, she unwaveringly portrayed the constantly materialising walls of her inner world with monastic patience and dedication. In 1944, she managed to escape a train that was headed for a concentration camp, and thus eluded the tragic fate suffered by half a million Hungarian Holocaust victims; fear and apprehension was ingrained in her consciousness for the rest of her life. After graduating from the College of Fine Arts, she instinctively sought her “own thing”, and found her métier in the theme of walls. Almost unprecedentedly in Hungarian painting, she voiced her revelations in the tones of classical Surrealism. The most outstanding works in the history of Hungarian Surrealism were produced by her brush in the mid-1950s.

This book, produced for the exhibition dedicated to Boetti at the Tornabuoni Art gallery in London is not only an exhibition catalogue but also a vivid portrait of the artist and his personality as well as an insight into his life history. The editor, Laura Cherubini, has collected interviews, essays, and contributions from a large number of renowned artists and critics. They provide a detailed profile of the artist, his thinking, and his oeuvre. Hans Ulrich Obrist, art curator and director of the Serpentine Gallery, donated some unpublished contributions dedicated to a selection of “unfinished projects”: ideas that remained trapped within drawings, prototypes, and sketches, which can be imagined through the narrative of a person who attempted to realise these works with Boetti. As well as his writings, Hans Ulrich Obrist, also gives an interview talking about his meeting with Boetti. With an unpublished text by Agata Boetti dedicated to the experience of creating Maps, its initial idea and realisation.

Conceptual artist and painter, but also a poet, writer, playwright and producer, Emilio Isgrò (born in Barcellona di Sicilia in 1937) is one of the most famous Italian figures of the international art scene spanning the 20th and 21st centuries. Isgrò began his career in the 1960s, creating extremely revolutionary and original works that resulted in several invitations to exhibit at the Venice Biennale (1972, 1978, 1986, and 1993) and the awarding of the first prize at the São Paulo Art Biennial (1977). This book provides an accurate portrait of the artist through critical texts and interviews that trace his career from its beginnings to the present day, and illustrating his famous “erasing” works. In a long dialogue with the art critic, Luca Massimo Barbero, Emilio Isgrò gives short but highly detailed portraits of fellow artists, anecdotes on cultural salons and certain outstanding figures that formed the centre of the art world. Fragments: An Exhibition by Mahmoud Obaidi at Qatar Museums in Doha from 18 October 2016 to 30 January 2017, retraces the 'organised chaos' that led to the destruction of Iraq, and presents a response to witnessing the fall of the city of Baghdad. In this work, Obaidi recreates what has been stolen or destroyed to try to piece the city back together again. The exhibition shows Obaidi grappling with the destruction of an 8,000-year-old civilisation, which has been laid waste in less than a fraction of that time. This publication, which accompanies the exhibition, includes a survey of the artist’s work and an interview with the celebrated curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, Director of the Serpentine Gallery in London. In his conversation with Mahmoud Obaidi we learn about the artist’s ‘multiple exiles’ from Iraq, the development of an increasingly political body of work, and his despair about the loss of Iraq following the invasion of 2003 and the ongoing chaos since then.

Pierre Alechinsky, is an internationally renowned artist known for the freedom and creativity portrayed in his painting. He began his career printing and etching. This catalogue highlights this perhaps less well studied aspect: research on illustrated books and the ensuing partnerships. “Adorned” books as Matisse would have said—where the contribution of Alechinsky’s art is very important—where the dialogue with the written word is a constant preoccupation and which can be seen with the precious partnerships established between numerous writers (Pierre-André Benoit known as PAB, Christian Dotremont and Marcel Moreau.), and artists (Michel Butor, Roland Topor, André Breton, Salah Stétié.), not forgetting mischievous puns, great spoonerisms and novel seesawing between the artist’s different techniques.

Allan Kaprow Painting 1946–1957 A Survey Edited by Andreas Baur

March 2017 9783864422027 | £31.50 Hardback | 128pp | 280 x 210 mm 70 col ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Netherlands

Allan Kaprow (1927–2006) is internationally renowned mainly as an action artist. Not only did he coin the term ‘happening’ – he gave distinction to this art form in New York in the late 1950s. Also his environments – huge, changeable installations, made from material such as car tires, drums and ice blocks – are regarded as milestones in recent art history. Allan Kaprow did, however, begin his artistic career as a painter, studying under Hans Hofmann; he studied art history under Meyer Shapiro and composition with John Cage. He was, therefore, not only open to theory at an early stage, but also to various artistic and interpretative approaches. He always moved between the tension-filled areas of intuition, open form and time reference on the one hand, and the reflexive practice as a theoretician and art historian on the other. This exhibition is, for the first time, exclusively dedicated to his early paintings from the time between 1946 and 1957, and reveals the role models the young artist chose .

Beat Zoderer Around 5 Corners Edited by Jochen Kienbaum

January 2017 9783864421976 | £31.50 Loose pages in box | 76pp 195 x147 mm 76 col ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Netherlands

Beat Zoderer sees his work as a reaction to set pieces of classical works such as those by Max Bill, but also to found everyday forms and objects of daily use. This carefully planned artist edition for Jochen Kienbaum does continue the constructive legacy that he is actually part of, yet at the same presents a break from it due to his ambiguity in terms of content as well as aesthetics. In contrast to classical modernism, Beat Zoderer's work is not based on any assumptions in terms of a philosophy of history, but moves with its art-critical approach between our everyday world and art, thus reflecting the ironic nature of postmodernist ideas. Thus, the latest series of interspersed pentagons corresponds with one of the accompanying poems by Klaus Merz, which can also be read as a motto for Beat Zoderer's (intellectual) work on modernity: “There is a voice that I recognize / even before it / calls me.”

JOHN RULE Spring 2017

The wait is over, barbarians have not only briefly made an appearance, they are forging ahead globally and herald the so-called post-factual age, which seems to be dominated by public falsehoods. Dana Schutz, born in 1976 in Livonia, Michigan, has long been researching this medially generated phenomenon in her large format oil paintings. The viewers are reminded of Dix, Kirchner, Grosz, and cubist figurations by Picasso. In the painting “Fight in an Elevator 5”, for instance, true carnage seems to have taken place: the grim old man, who bares his teeth when he opens the elevator door, holds the severed head of a younger man in his head, and on the ground we see the severed head of a blond woman. One can only guess at the awful things that might have happened here. Everything, and yet again nothing, is the answer, since such a representation seems harmless in comparison to how such events are aired in detail on social media.

March 2017 9783864422041 | £23.50 Paperback | 96pp | 325 x 225 mm 55 col ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Netherlands

The opening of the Elbphilharmonie prompted the Deichtorhallen Hamburg to also venture into uncharted territory: For the exhibition and book project, internationally renowned artists, who seemed predestined due to their close affinity to architecture, were invited to realize a corresponding artwork during in the test phase of the building. This unique opportunity initiated a variety of works ranging from photography and installation to sculpture and film: from the cascading large-scale installations by Peter Buggenhout to the largeformat photographs of the Elbphilharmonie by Candida Höfer. There are, however, also close ties to Minimal Art, which still remains one of the paradigms of contemporary art, and which is reflected in the works, for instance, by Monica Bonvicini and Sarah Morris. The building by Herzog & de Meuron was the cause and origin for the exhibition idea “Elbphilharmonie Revisited”, but the artworks were developed freely and independant from this. Also featuring works by: Baltic Raw Org, Jean-Marc Bustamente, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller and Tomas Saraceno.

JOHN RULE Spring 2017

At first glance, the phrase “Unique Pieces in Series” seems to be a contradiction in terms. How can something that supposedly exists only once be present several times? Yet, some of Gerhard Richter's editions embody this particular principle of uniqueness in series. In painting editions, photographic works, prints, drawings and multiples, Richter developed a way of varying individual pieces within their respective identical production method. An entire edition thus consists of unique variants that are deliberately different. There is probably no other artist who applied this creative concept in such a fascinatingly diverse way as a fundamental method within their art. The book will be published on April 7, 2017 on the occasion of the exhibition “Gerhard Richter. The Editions” at Museum Folkwang in Essen. Gerhard Richter was born 1932 in Dresden; in 1997 he received the so-called Nobel-price of art the Praemium Imperiale in Tokyo. Hubertus Butin, born in 1964, worked in Gerhard Richter’s studio 1996 to 1998 as art historic assistant and is the editor of the Catalogue raisonné of the Multiples by Richter.

Herbert Brandl

Herbert Brandl’s process is often described as impulsive, abstract and yet concrete. His well-known landscapes usually present dramatic natural phenomena, oscillating between an incredible closeness and a great distance. His inspiration the artist generally takes from his photographic mementoes, collected in an archive, and by doing so, he manages to translate the impression of immediate personal experiences into the medium of painting. In the process, seeing and perceiving for Herbert Brandl are in constant dialogue and give rise to a very distinctive interplay of abstraction and representation. This impression is further enhanced by the sweeping form of colourfield painting, which retains a spatial dimension, while pushing the latter into the background in favour of the colour field itself. The book shows the very latest work together with some earlier pieces. Herbert Brandl, born 1959 in Graz, since 2004 professor at the Academy of Art Dusseldorf, Germany, is working and living in Vienna.

Herbert Maier’s fascinating project represents an attempt at global thinking: it bears witness to the availability of images, the slowness of classical painting as well as his passion for travel and collections. The images with which Herbert Maier returns from all over the world are images that people have created of themselves and of others; they show human culture in all its facets, in its beauty and in its abysmal dimensions. Faces, portraits, heads and masks – hardly any other motif is represented more frequently in the history of art and culture. For many years, Herbert Maier traveled to various places and regions, to Pakistan, India, Nepal, Mexico, Guatemala, the USA, Israel, Iran and the tribal areas of West Africa. His visual library is closely linked with these journeys. Encounters with other people and the inclusion of their artistic and cultural testimonies his personal imaginary image memory became just as important to him as the examination of Western art. Herbert Maier has been working on this encyclopaedia since 2009; it currently contains over 500 watercolours.

March 2017 9783864422034 | £31.50 Hardcover | 120pp | 310 x 225 mm 70 col ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Netherlands

The non-impasto oil and acrylic paintings of Katrin Plavčak (born 1970 in Gütersloh, grown up in Austria), draw figurative references to Dix and Grosz, Magritte and Picasso, Höch and Lassnig, as well as the practice of naive painting, where perspective and spatial conditions are suspended while several narrative strands coexist. Katrin Plavčak purposefully examines the history of images originating from comics, cartoons, illustration and, quite broadly, from technical visual media. In addition, she is a great portraitist who knows how to psychologically pinpoint the characteristics of her found or invented figures with great painterly skill. Thus, if these days the post-factual age is heralded because “we are inundated with information, to the point where it becomes meaningless to us”, as Lawson already formulated in 1981, the opposite pole could be a kind of art that is prepared to explicitly explore political as well as mythical dimensions. Critical, oppositional distance is generated practically by itself in this medium when, in highly condensed form, space for complex facts, ideas and emotions is created on the canvas.

JOHN RULE Spring 2017

Polish-German artist Magdalena Kita’s motifs, printed on bath towels, are vaguely reminiscent of the obsessive works by Dorothy Iannone. However, Magdalena Kita goes a bit further with her colorful and equally erotic motifs. With this first publication “Californication”, she not only assembles a large number of different bath towels, where she continues with the naively-lustful iconographic program of libertarian feminism, but also presents the documentation of numerous public performances and TV commercials she has produced. The towels are presented by young, shapely boys sunbathing on them or parading them on the beach. The images on the towels function as Trojan horses, they show a lot without revealing anything: the complex erotically charged motifs give the viewer no clues to either the lifestyle or, more specifically, sex and gender of those holding the towels. Magdalena Kita’s works are thus ironic reflections of our current social life as perpetuated in a very particular style by the male protagonists at LA’s beaches.

This suggests an objectivity of the criteria that is seemingly the result of a simply structured art world. Sabrina Labis leads us through a virtual art fair architecture – a kind of empty formula that caricatures the White Cube as an ideal exhibition space. The virtual walk through such rooms is reminiscent of treasure hunts in computer games, in which one repeatedly encounters dead ends and various messages. March 2017 9783864421945 | £31.50 Paperback | 168pp | 315 x 215 mm 100 col ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Netherlands

As early as 1912, Pablo Picasso introduced paper as a material with his “guitar”, and in the 1920s, examining how images actually work, it was Kurt Schwitters works on paper that gave him the idea for a three-dimensional collage: the Merzbau. The Affichists tore down posters in the streets of Paris after the Second World War, to create new images collaged from scraps of billboard advertisements. And in the 1960s, paper became a sought-after material, since art was meant to be readily available, inexpensive and easy to transport. This publication explores the still valid question as to why, and for what formal as well as substantive reasons, artists still chose paper as sculptural artistic material. It looks at the cardboard sculptures of Charlotte Posenenske and Erwin Herrich and the work of Dieter Roth, who attacks any notions of timelessness or eternal validity with his Literature Sausages by pressing softened books and magazines into sausage casings. Other artists include Dan Flavin, Isamu Noguchi, Robert Rauschenberg, Thomas Demand, Thomas Hirschhorn, Steven Parrino, Charlotte Posenenske, and Jacques de la Villeglé.

Since the beginning of his career at the end of the eighties, Wim Delvoye has applied himself to shifting the barriers which separate popular art and high art, decorative arts and fine art, ancient and contemporary, noble and base. In a word, according to Michel Onfray, Wim Delvoye practices “oxymoron”. His works appear to pull in different directions, as if suspended between seduction and dissonance. On the occasion of its 10th anniversary, le Mudam Luxembourg has invited the Belgian artist, who marked the opening of the museum with the creation of his Chapelle to fill its spaces. Deployed over two floors, the exhibition offers a panoramic survey of his twenty-five years of artistic production, emphasizing as much the formal variety as the conceptual coherence of his oeuvre. Playing with the format of the retrospective, Wim Delvoye offers here a “promenade” through his singular world, extending over four rooms of contrasting realities.

Rik Wouters (1882-1916) is without doubt the most important Belgian artist of the first quarter of the twentieth century. He was born in 1882 in Malines. In 1905, he met Nel, a young woman who had modelled for several artists, who became his wife and his muse and whom he never stopped painting. At the beginning of his career Rik Wouters was fascinated by the work of James Ensor, painting still lives with the spatula and interiors with figures. In 1912, he took himself to Paris and there finally discovered the work of the Impressionists. He much admired the canvases of Cézanne and Van Gogh, their shimmering colours. His work could be described as “Fauvism brabançon” , a term which did not come into use until November 1941. The art of Rik Wouters is characterized by an abundance of colours and simple and authentic subjects, which directly affect the viewer. Thanks to his visual language and rich colours, he succeeded in developing an artistic style ahead of its time.

January 2017 9783906276519 | £39.95 Hardback | 106pp | 324 x 233 mm 31 colour plates Rights: Worldwide

This richly-illustrated publication introduces two masters of Vietnamese art, Bui Xuan Phai (1920 – 1988) and Nguyen Tu Nghiem (1919 – 2016). Both painters are celebrated for their assimilation of avant-garde aesthetics with their own cultural heritage, creating a distinctively Vietnamese modernism. Yet, despite their renown throughout Southeast Asia, both artists — and their contemporaries — remain unfamiliar in the West. The present collection of previously unseen paintings and drawings thus seeks to illuminate modern Vietnamese art for those interested in Asian culture. Additionally, by tracing the origins of the Hugentobler Collection from Hanoi’s hidden art worlds to the paintings’ current home in Switzerland, the publication shines a light on the practice of art collecting. A poetic foreword has been contributed by writer Jeffrey Hantover, while Asian art specialist Ildegarda E. Scheidegger discusses Phai and Nghiem’s vernacular modernism. An essay by art historian Louise Malcolm offers a ‘behind the scenes’ glimpse of the Vietnamese art world in the latter half of the twentieth century.

This book, which focuses in particular on the creations of last ten years, takes up the story where the first book describing the journey of the company, published in 2006, left off. What has happened since? Seven productions, two venues dedicated to dance, two festivals, collaborations, parades, workshops, tours....Twenty years of stories, told by the men and women who make up Käfig. In 1995, the Generali Foundation – founded as the nonprofit art association of the Generali Group, Austria – relocated to premises in the fourth district of Vienna, designed by the architects Jabornegg & Pálffy. It moved to a building complex called the Habighof, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when it was used as a hat factory. Here, the Generali Foundation housed an exhibition space, underground storage, study rooms and offices. In 2015, the collection of Generali Foundation was transferred to the Museum der Moderne in Salzburg as a permanent loan, and the site in Vienna was closed down. This book examines this architectural landscape – which has since been listed as an historic site – in its international context as a trendsetting exhibition space. It explores the relation between internal and external architectural structures and examines the commitment of companies in the field of visual arts and architecture in a shifting social context. Photographs by Hertha Hurnaus show the abandoned, empty spaces of the Generali Foundation.
