JOHN RULE Autumn 2017

Compelling and personal, Heidi Klum by Rankin exposes model, designer, and personality, Heidi Klum through the lens of her close friend Rankin. Originally conceived as a purely personal project, this publication brings together iconic images and never before seen shots to create the most revealing portrait of international superstar Heidi Klum to date. With photographs taken over a period of ten years, this second solo book project between the photographer Rankin and Heidi Klum, explores femininity, sexuality, confidence and strength through the intimacy and humour that has characterised their working relationship. With an unparalleled rapport between photographer and subject, Rankin’s images allow  Heidi to strip bare and uncover the fun and the vulnerability that makes her image so recognisable. This title contains many of Heidi Klums’s favourite images taken by Rankin and contains a short personal introduction written by Heidi Klum on the project. Shot on location and within the studio, this book of nude and intimate photography follows on from Rankin’s recent release #NSFW (teNeues, 2016) to cement his formidable reputation as one of the world’s leading photographers.

Julia Margaret Cameron, Florence Henri, Francesca Woodman The Art of the Feminine Edited by Guiliano Sergio

July 2017 9788836636754 | £28.50 Paperback | 144 pp | 250 x 200 mm 100 col & b/w ills Rights: UK, Eire, Scandinavia and E.Europe only

Are we all the same when behind a camera lens or is there a feminine gaze? Does it make any sense to address the gender issue with an impersonal and neutral medium like photography? The works of Julia Margaret Cameron, Francesca Woodman and Florence Henri seem to provide an answer: despite different techniques and formal approaches, their portraits show a common sensitivity that affords the viewer a journey through the representation of femininity. In their photographs, all the women portrayed offer themselves to the viewer with their presence and demand to be acknowledged. Only in this way the photography can be the space where we put self-identity to the test, the place in which to escape objectification and build a dimension in which the eye and the body offer a single vision, and any linguistic reference is subservient to a new investigation.

JOHN RULE Autumn 2017

Paris, Before it is Too Late is a curated selection of sixty vintage photographs by the French photographer André Ostier. Spanning the career of Ostier from his days in Paris during World War II to the 1960s and 1970s, the striking images capture the City of Light through his eyes and instill a certain sense of nostalgia. The famous fashion photographer known for his work with the couturier Christian Dior sought to document a fleeting Old Paris by capturing its people, buildings, and the special moments of the city he so admired. Part of the book is a replica of an album Ostier put together himself, Paris, Before it is Too Late but the book also includes a specially curated selection of rare and haunting images he took during the war. He also chronicled the fancy-dress balls of the glamorous 1950s and 1960s. In this work, the Paris-based historian of photography Thomas Michael Gunther takes a close look at the passion and conviction that characterize André Ostier’s work.

July 2017 9780646952413 | ÂŁ29.99 Hardback | 138pp | 230 x 280 mm 120 b/w photos Rights: Worldwide

Spanning five years, five countries, and nine music festivals, this project turns the camera away from the bands and focuses on capturing the emotion of the crowd, that amorphous, vibrating creature with a thousand faces. Revealing both the intensity that comes with letting go, as well as the close communities inside which fans can truly be themselves. Music and society have always been intimately related. When they both come together, it becomes a rite of passage for many people and just one day can create memories that will last long after the stages are dismantled and the bands move on. These images are beautiful, evocative, and at times surreal. In time they will become a kind of an anthropological study on a scene, on a culture, and on humanity in a way. Based in Sydney Australia, Nic Bezzina is a portrait and fine art photographer with a passion for long-term projects. He has exhibited his work throughout Australia and London. His work is held in public and private collections

JOHN RULE Autumn 2017

The famous poem by Walt Whitman (1819–1892) not only makes use of the imaginative world of children, but its elegantly sweeping lines have quite a sobering effect on the reader. Cuny Janssen presents in her latest, three-part photo-essay nature photographs as well as portraits of Amsterdam children; she shows in an inimitable way the intermediate state where naiveté is lost and gives way to knowledge. The natural images of parks and park-like neighborhoods do not, surprisingly, form a true contrast to the fantastic realism of the children's images. As in Janssen's earlier works, her portraits never seem to be conceived with a particular moment in mind, but rather appear like stills, as frozen images from a movie. In this way, the artist, as ever, is able to keep distance and closeness to her and our objects in floating suspense – and this, even though, as Cuny Janssen says, this book was different from her previous projects, insofar as the images are captured in her immediate environment, rather than from other worlds and cultures.

Wolfgang Träger: A Fluxus Family Portrait Album Text by Kerstin Skrobanek

In 1962, as a scandalous avant-garde, the Fluxus movement conquered art associations and theaters in Germany. Artists such as Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, John Cage and Ben Patterson approached music, art, and literature in a completely new and often quite concrete way. First, the Rhineland and then the New York art scene became infected with the Fluxus-virus. In the 1970s, conceptual art and land-art emerged as the new avant-garde, but this was by no means the end for imaginative, enchanting and revolutionary Fluxus events, which still take place today. But what exactly happened from the 1980s to the 2000s, before the artists were honoured with major retrospectives. Wolfgang Träger, photographer for Kunstforum International since 1990, was there and photographed everything. The photos from Europe and the US show performances and portraits, as well as artists at work and in private. Sadly, some of the Fluxus artists have since died, but in Wolfgang Träger’s book, they are gathered once more for a family portrait.

October 2017 9786155304750 | £40.00 Hardback | 264 pp | 280 x 235 mm 200 colour ills Rights: Worldwide exc.Hungary

Péter Korniss’ comprehensive work over fifty years encompasses the gradual disappearance of the ancient peasant world, the transformed village, tradition in the present and the way of life of the weekly commuter. Péter Korniss is one of the determinative figures in contemporary Hungarian photography, whose work is part of the visual memory of Hungarian society. The exhibition focuses mainly on his most successful series of photographs. Firstly, it includes photographs that record the traditional world and lifestyle of his native Transylvania, followed by his famous cycle of images on Guest Workers. The next section examines the photographer’s milieu after the fall of communism, and presents the series on nativity players, moving testaments to a dying tradition. The final section of the exhibition is a world premiere of Korniss’s new set of photographs, the Transylvanian Women in Budapest.

Alécio de Andrade (Rio de Janeiro, 1938 - Paris, 2003), poet, film-maker, photographer and photo-journalist was a member of the Magnum Agency. “ ..A photograph is like a poem. Something which is offered to us. A thing happens, something ephemeral. You have to be synchronized with it. There are things, photographs, that I have the feeling I never took. Photography takes note of the world, it shows it but doesn’t change it. I don’t believe art changes the world. It goes as far as meaning and wanting to change the world To me it’s essential for photography to be rooted in the instantaneous. It must merge with the instantaneous in order to reveal a vision of the world, a synthesis of its mystery, its objects and its things. And photography may only acquire greatness when it is able to convey the authenticity of the transitory elements of the world.” With a text by Marie Nimier, comedienne and novelist.

August 2017 9788894182705 | £49.00 Hardback | 212pp | 225 x 160 mm 120 col ills Rights: Worldwide exc.Italy

Laura Lafon went to Kurdistan wondering how the Kurdish people, known for their revolutionary struggle and especially egalitarian gender position, envisage love. She embarks on her journey with an everyday lover, Martin Gallone. Not a partner, no, but a kind of companion, with a shared passion for photography. Before they know it, they find themselves faced with cultural prohibitions, public space, the non-mixing of genders, tedious traditions. And one endless question: why aren’t you married?. This work journeys through the gap between the speeches and the reality. To draw out various subjectivity, the artist confronts her own identity with the realities which she meets. It is the tale which is more than a simple documentary, an absurd tale which reveals love. Without doubt the characters they met inevitably determined a certain image of the land, the Kurdistan of the revolutionaries lacking reality with its badly digested utopias and anarchistic cafés where the taboos persevere in spite of the speeches.

August 2017 9788894182736 | £35.00 Hardback | 116pp | 240 x 165 mm 77 b/w ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Italy

A three-year photographic journey made by the author deep in the bowels of Palermo. The book, contains a selection of photos in which the main protagonists are children. Malacarne literally means “bad meat”, an expression in the local dialect that refers to people who can't be trusted. It is used as title in a provocative way in order to break the cliché and show the other side of the coin. As the subtitle says, children come before everything else, even in those realities at the margins of society, where there are “no written” laws that people learn to respect as real rules, in order to survive. Ballarò, Monreale, Albergheria, Zen, Brancaccio are just some of the author's journey stops. Faraci has discovered some very difficult neighborhoods that are microcosms separated from the rest of the city, where the children he photographed are characterized by a particular identity, strong and specific The photos published in this book captures all the strength, vitality and energy of these children.

August 2017 9788894182712 | £19.00 Paperback | 80pp | 165 x 240 mm 110 col ills Rights: Worldwide exc.Italy

Portraits, 35mm colour slides, from 10 different underground networks worldwide, (Paris, Rome, London, Madrid, New York, Mexico DF, Santiago de Chile, Tunisia, Delhi and Tokyo), this work is reflects on the images shot by Walker Evans in the New York subways in the 40’s. It doesn’t make reference to any specific place but to distant and different cities which appear here as if closed in one single space. The faces, which express the suspension and the naked rest of the passengers that use this means of transport every day, become metaphors as much of human essence as its modern dimension. Behind the reality of constant movement is the veil of constant suspension. Spaces in which millions of individualities meet without establishing a relationship, driven by the frenetic desire to consume and speed up daily operations. The non-places are focused only on the present and are representative of our age, characterized by transience and lonely individualism. People pass through the non-places but no one lives there.

JOHN RULE Autumn 2017

We used to think about gender as a double reality, male one one side, female on the other. Just before being born, through clinical examination they determin our sex. We are classified as male or female. At the same time, they give us some specific and definite roles expectative. The term “sex”, from Latin sexum that mean divided/separated, in its original meaning counts, in a clear way, as a common sense of distinction, as a double trait: male from a side, female by the other. Other ways a lot of scientific studies shows as the gender is a continuum, something fluid with copious variants and without a strong distinction between masculine and feminine. This book goes out from these people with the aim to develop a discussion on the matter of gender, to start a reflection on how the concepts of masculine and feminine have been created and how these consequently lead to power relations based on gender. It treats about gender fluidity, radicated symbols, memories, dreams, cultural and religious references.

October 2017 9788894182798 | £39.00 Hardback | 192pp | 200 x 300 mm 100 col ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Italy

In 1516 Sir Thomas More coined the term “Utopia” to describe an idealistic society in which common principles are shared, people live by farming simply for survival and not for commerce and private properties and money are abolished. But what is Utopia today? Utopian believers are the “real dreamers”, those that do not dream with eyes open but actually try to make their dreams come true. History is full of examples of dreaming heroes that envision a society, which is happy, tolerant, free, unconditioned, peaceful, self-sufficient and green. Carlo Bevilacqua, a dreamer in his own right, has travelled the globe seeking the people that dare to believe in a better world. Either solo, with family or as a full community, they set up an open living society in which the free human spirit is respected and nature’s way is the walk to walk. Bevilacqua did his research and went off to find them, the true utopian believers, to photograph and hear their stories, to learn and share their visions and views

Francesco Neri, who was born in Italy, opens a personal family album, a treasure chest filled with images that reflect life, its quiet and special, even magical moments, the change of generations as well as the questions of the photographer in relation to his medium. In 2008, he moved into the apartment of his late grandparents where he encountered familiar rooms and objects, which he captured in photographic interiors and still lifes. They seem to sum up the course of time, and transform it, thereby challenging the way in which one’s personal perception develops, or might be constantly changing. His grandfather was a medical practitioner and, as is quite common in the region, went hunting in his leisure time – just like his father. Medicine and hunting have therefore had a direct or indirect influence on Francesco Neri’s profession as a photographer.. Photography has long been a recognized instrument for observing and documenting existing facts, and in a diagnostic context, for the analytical examination of what is depicted.

The Indian Painting Collection in the Dresden Copper Plate Cabinet Edited by Monica Juneja & Petra Kuhlmann-Hodick, Dresden State Art Collections

July 2017 ISBN 9783954982714 | £19.80 Paperback | 256 pp | 300 x 230 mm 273 col ills Rights: UK & Eire

Two collections, hitherto all but unknown, of Indian painting from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, which are part of the Dresden Copper Plate Cabinet, are the focus of these miniature stories. An inventory of the art collections of the Saxon Elector August the Strong, drawn up in 1738, lists a number of albums with portraits of Indian rulers and princes. In 1848, this collection was enlarged by a donation of 78 works, more diverse in terms of subject matter, from the estate of the German linguist and Indologist August Wilhelm Schlegel. The catalogue offers a representative selection of the Dresden inventory which was enriched by the recent donation of a Shahnama manuscript from Kashmir. The exhibition presents this inventory in the context of loans from Mumbai, London, Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, and Berlin. Eleven essays in German and English discuss the background of, and provide insights into, the fascinating world of Indian painting.

Brühl’s Terrace, the Swan Service and the Sistine Madonna are all closely related with the Saxon Prime Minister Heinrich Count von Brühl (1700–1763). He was a patron of the arts who set standards not only in 18th-century Germany but also in Europe with his heterogeneous and precious collections. Almost every genre was represented: his famous gallery of paintings, one of the biggest private libraries of his time, the wide range production of porcelain and numerous castles in Saxony and Poland. Nonetheless – or even because of this – his name was until now connected with magnificence and wastefulness, defeat and bankruptcy. Only in recent years has there begun a different appreciation of this most powerful and influential man at the Saxon court after the king himself. The present publication moves away from the narrow focus on his regional importance and opens the door for the study of the cultural and political importance of 18th-century Saxony in Europe and the rest of the world.

Napoleon is not usually associated with Versailles. However, he made an indelible mark on this royal palace. After his marriage to MarieLouise, the Grand Trianon was completely refitted and furnished for the visits of the Imperial family. The Emperor went there regularly to work. Later, Louis-Philippe had installed at Versailles, in the majestic spaces where they are still displayed today, a collection of important works from the Louvre commissioned by the Emperor himself. This collection constitutes the premier collection in the world devoted to Napoleon, tracing the major events of the Empire and revealing the political vision and artistic and aesthetic tastes of the Emperor. These masterpieces, comprising paintings, sculpture and furniture, usually dispersed throughout the palace at Versailles and often unnoticed by the public are now united for the first time at the musée des Beaux-Arts d’Arras. This catalogue allows the reader to follow in the tracks of Napoleon Bonaparte as he made an unforgettable impression on the history of France and of Europe.

JOHN RULE Autumn 2017

Between 1905 and 1920 Russia was shaken by revolutions, warfare and civil war. At the same time a young generation of artists dared to bring about an aesthetic and visionary new beginning that was a herald and driving force of coming changes and also accompanied them. In no other European country did the avant-garde combine art with social commitment so directly. They welcomed the fundamental changes after the revolutions almost unanimously and placed their skills at the disposal of the new society. The London collection of Vladimir Tsarenkov illustrates the aesthetic revolt and utopian social ambitions of these developments in painting, drawings and printmaking with works by Natalia Goncharova, Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Deineka and many other major artists – as well as in design and applied art. Among the collection’s highlights are its numerous high-quality porcelains from the period with constructivist or agitprop decoration. The catalogue includes essays by Ada Raev and nine other eminent authors and brief individual introductions to all of the artists in the exhibition.

July 2017 9781999741907 | £19.99 Paperback | 68pp | 265 x 215 mm 50 col & b/w ills Rights: Worldwide

This year marks the eightieth anniversary of the bombing of the Basque town of Gernika in Spain. Pablo Picasso created his iconic, anti-fascist painting, Guernica (1937), in protest against that attack and others targeted at civilian populations. This book, published alongside the exhibition, Guernica Remakings, explores the ongoing power of Picasso’s Guernica through a series of contemporary reworkings that continue to locate the iconic image within political protest. The featured artworks demonstrate the longevity and versatility of the original as it morphed from Picasso’s canvas, painted in 1937, to a tapestry in 1955, a textile artwork in 2010, a theatrical production in 2011-12 and a protest banner in 2012-14. Guernica’s humanitarian message is still relevant; it calls for solidarity and compassion across borders. Traversing geographical boundaries with each remaking it connects Spain and France, to the USA, UK, South Africa, Canada and India. The voices of those involved in creating the artworks are heard alongside the curator and maker, Dr Nicola Ashmore.

July 2017 9789059972384 | £49.50 Hardback | 640 pp | 300 x 280 mm 30 colour Ills. Rights: Worldwide exc. Netherlands & Belgium

From the beginning of 1914 until his death in 1944, Mondrian wrote more than a hundred essays on the subject of art and society. He wrote in Dutch, French and English, his choice of language often depending on his place of residence. All of Mondrian’s writings proclaim his conviction that art paves the way to a better society. Many of Mondrian’s texts have been published, but the original versions were often translated, edited, and polished. This book aims to present the painter’s words as he wrote them, going back to the original sources of all of Mondrian’s manuscripts, typescripts, and personal papers, published and unpublished, finished and unfinished– some only consisting of a few sentences, some of as much as eighty pages. Louis Veen’s compilation of Mondrian’s original texts is, first of all, a reference work; in presenting the original Dutch, French and English texts, it aims to be a reliable source for translation and interpretation, and to preserve Mondrian’s authentic intellectual legacy for future generations.

JOHN RULE Autumn 2017

With his erotic nude studies Auguste Rodin completed the artistic step towards modernity during the last two decades of his life. To a greater extent than in his sculptural œuvre he broke with art traditions in his pencil drawings, watercolors, and scissor cut drawings, establishing his total independence of prevalent beauty ideals and morals. His intimate paintings are characterized by expeditious strokes and the liberality of the motif. Contemporaries such as Rilke and Paul Klee immediately recognized the revolutionary artistic quality of the drawings. The price Harry Graf Kessler had to pay for exhibiting them in Weimar in 1906 was high. As a result he was dismissed from his position as head of the Grand-Ducal museum. This book, a hardcover reprint of our 1995 classic, contains 105 watercolors and scissor cuts collected from museums and private collections from all over the world, including some “scandalous” drawings from Weimar. Anne-Marie Bonnet, French art historian, has held the chair of Art History at the University of Bonn, Germany, since 1997.

Arman was a US-naturalised French painter. He is recognised internationally as being one of the leading artists of the second half of the 20th century and one of the main figures of the French artistic current of Nouveau Réalisme. This book covers the first twenty years of Arman’s artistic production, from the Accumulations of industrial objects and series products to the Poubelles, documenting consumer society’s waste; from the famous Colères, Coupes et Combustions, which through different processes dematerialize objects depriving them of their functionality, to paintings, to actions and monumental works adhering to the “poetic of things”

Giacomelli’s landscape is both real and invented, just as his eye is both visionary and visual. It is a pretext to represent another situation. His landscapes are “written landscapes” in which the horizon is almost completely eliminated: a fusion of time and non-time. In his landscapes, he captured the marks, material and furrows of the earth and in them he found parallels with human bodies, since the earth, in his poetics, is the flesh of man. Overall, his work is characterized by the richness of its internal references. Hence his landscape series is deeply linked to another important chapter in his work: Motivo suggerito dal taglio dell’albero (Motif suggested by the cut of a tree). Both of these studies are the best demonstration of his approach and his way of constructing an image. This is particularly true of this series of pictures, starting from the small details of nature, which convey a human breath. Like a visual alchemist, Giacomelli transforms the image into a “double vision”.

Mea Culpa is the first extended Italian anthology dedicated to conceptual artist Santiago Sierra. Born in 1966 in Madrid, for almost thirty years now his work has been moving on the rough grounds of criticism to the contemporary socio-political conditions. As the bearer of the dark truth of our time, Sierra is often stigmatised for his intense and ambiguous performances. Nevertheless, their visual language, their complex and energetic symbolism and the fact that they are plunged into the reality of people give them a rare emotional impact. This book brings together for the first time the most iconic and representative political works by Santiago Sierra from the 1990s to date, together with the documentation of many of his performances over the world, new productions and reactivations of past installations and actions.

Helga Michie, born in Vienna in 1921 as the twin sister of Ilse Aichinger, emigrated to London in July 1939 with one of the last Kindertransporte. She still lives there to this day and has been in contact with other Austrian expats, such as Elias and Veza Canetti, Erich Fried, Robert Neumann, H. G. Adler, and Michael Hamburger. This bilingual monograph marks the first time her previously largely unknown artistic oeuvre, giving voice to her own experiences of Nazi oppression and exile, is documented in its entirety. The book includes texts by friends as well as academic contributions discussing both Michie’s far-reaching relationships with Austrian expats in London and the early separation of the twin sisters, whose diverging paths open up complementary perspectives on a common fate. “Where does the consolation from these pictures come from? It is a mystery, but it’s there.” —Ilse Aichinger on the works of her twin sister

Published to accompany the exhibition Euan Uglow / Sargy Mann at The Collection, this book looks at the work of two important modern British painters who devoted their lives as artists to what Robert Pepperell describes in his essay as ‘subjective realism’. Mann and Uglow met in 1960 at Camberwell Art School where they and others, including Frank Auerbach, were passionately committed to making work about direct perceptual experiences, influenced not just by the masters of European painting but also by the revolution in the science of perception which was happening at the time. As Mann says ‘When I first went to Camberwell Art School in 1960 I met remarkable painter teachers notably Dick Lee, Euan Uglow and Frank Auerbach who said to me ‘we will not teach you how to paint, but we can teach you through the practice of drawing and painting to see more, to see better’ And I found that this was true.”

Georg Baselitz, who celebrates his 80th birthday next year, counts among the most important German painters of our times, whose oeuvre, whilst firmly rooted in the centuries-old traditions of German painting, lies beyond all artistic movements and styles, making him an exceptionally autonomous figure in art. For over fifty years, he has never stopped reflecting on the very nature of one of the most ancient genres in the visual arts, that of figural painting. In Baselitz’s art, constant renewal is inseparable from the act of looking back on the achievements of the past, and continuously revisiting them. The art of Georg Baselitz, has always stood apart from the current trends in painting, regardless of how times and fashions have changed. The age that he has lived through has not always shown respect for painting, least of all figurative painting. Baselitz reminds us, however, that “painting was never dead, it was prohibited”. Today, painting is not only permitted once more, but is thriving globally, enjoying a new golden age.

Alighiero Boetti: Minimum/Maximum, an exhibition, at the Fondazione Cini, in Venice, is the result of an innovative process of selection and comparison between the minimum and maximum formats of works from the artist’s most iconic cycles. It focuses on one of the themes that best represents Boetti’s creative process, the theme of format, and is directly connected with the notion of the time required to realise an artwork. On a sensorial level, the minimum formats complement the larger works in dialectical opposition, characteristic of Boetti’s creative process. Divided into different sections with over 20 artworks, the exhibition contains Boetti’s most emblematic cycles, including Ricami (embroideries), Aerei (planes), Mappe (maps), Tutto (everything) and Biro (works made with a ballpoint pen). It also provides an opportunity to show works that are largely unknown to the wider public, such as Estate 70 (1970) and Titoli (1978). An essay by Luca Massimo Barbero forms the introduction, followed by many contributions by art critics and journalists.

The project explores Boetti’s strongly dialectic thought process as it revolves around the theme of photocopies. The volume contains extensive written material, including an introductory essay by Obrist, another by Agata Boetti, a long, previously unpublished conversation between Agata Boetti and Obrist and two critical analyses by Michelle Cotton and Mario Garcia Torres respectively. The publication also includes the complete reproduction of 111 photocopied images originally bound in an elegant volume with a red cloth cover. This work combines candid photographs of certain moments of Alighiero’s private life and, at the same time, images of contemporary life and events recovered from newspapers and magazines.

This catalogue, published for the exhibition dedicated to the artist at Art Basel 2017, is the result of research conducted to provide a deeper understanding of a specific cycle of works by Lucio Fontana. The paintings on show, and analysed in this catalogue, belong to his series “Fine Di Dio”. They were painted on egg-shaped, identically-sized canvases, and feature constellations of “holes” and/or slashes and/ or scratches, which are sometimes limited to one part of the monochromatic canvas, while others cover the entire surface painted in oils (and sometimes sequins). In an interview with Carlo Cisventi in 1963, the artist explained: “For me, they represent the infinite, the inconceivable, the end of figurative representation, the beginning of nothingness.” Lucio Fontana is unanimously considered as one of the leading artists in the generation between the 1950s and 1960s who contributed to the radical linguistic and conceptual change in contemporary art. The essays by Enrico Crispolti and Luca Massimo Barbero provide a deeper understanding of the origin, content and characteristics of the works.

Glenn Brown creates an artistic language that transcends time and pictorial conventions. His mannerist instincts stem from the desire to breathe new life into the distant confines of historical form. Through references, appropriation and research, he presents a contemporary reading of images that are fixed in memory. His figures and landscapes, borrowed from the world of history of art, are gradually transformed in exuberant entities. Different historic periods: Renaissance, Impressionism, and Surrealism, are blended in sophisticated compositions. Brown creates a space in which the abstract, the visceral, the rational and irrational, the beautiful and grotesque, come together in a frenetic amalgamation. This exhibition will be held at the Museo Bardini in Florence. Alongside the renowned collection of the great nineteenth and twentieth century art dealer and collector Stefano Bardini, more than thirty works by Glenn Brown will be on show, including paintings, drawings and sculptures. His work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions including shows at the Serpentine Gallery, London (2004) and Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (2008.

Jan Fabre: Glass And Bone Sculptures 1977-2017 Jan Fabre has always been strongly fascinated by alchemy and the memory of matter. Published on the occasion of his exhibition at the Abbazia di San Gregorio, at Venice Biennale, the book includes previously unpublished works and contexts: works in glass and bone created by the artist during a period that spans from 1977 to 2017. The artist makes a reference to Flemish Masters who used crushed bone in their paintings , and to Venetian glass-blowers. Fabre has deliberately chosen two materials that are hard and strong, but delicate and fragile at the same time. “The philosophical and poetic reason behind associating human and animal bones with glass, comes from a recollection of my sister as a child playing with a tiny glass object. It made me think of the flexibility of human bone structure and the flexibility used in glass-blowing techniques. Certain animals, and all human beings, leave their mother’s womb like molten glass from the furnace. They can be modelled, bent, and shaped with a surprising level of freedom.”

In 1969, Betty Tompkins, then living in New York, began her large, photorealistic and detailed oil paintings of penetrations and masturbations of female genitalia. As she said herself, the large format provided a lovely opportunity to simultaneously achieve abstraction and create sexual freedom; hence, she left out anything that might allow a definitive attribution: heads, hands, and feet. Nevertheless, in 1973, two of her works were seized by customs on import into France. In 2003, Harald Szeemann invited her to the first Lyon Biennial, and presented exactly those paintings – and in the same year, the Center Pompidou in Paris acquired them for their collection. Many museums, including American ones, have since followed their lead. Her paintings do not only represent the intergenerational breakthrough and rebellion against sexual oppression and racial hatred of the 1960s, but also quite profanely the discovery and application of new technical ways and means in the field of painting: airbrushing, using stamps, graphite powder, and even fingerprints. In this way, she has been able to transform something intimate into something monumental.

On the occasion of the Reformation Anniversary 2017, Deichtorhallen Hamburg show a comprehensive exhibition by American artist Bill Viola featuring 13 video installations created since 1992. His work examines core themes of human life – birth, emotion, spirituality, love and death. The artist is particularly interested in the mystical traditions of Christianity, Zen Buddhism and Islam. Reflected in almost all his video installations, there is a spiritual openness that addresses the viewers' bodies as a medium for borderline experiences, which contributes to their impressive aura. At times, their ultraslow motion aesthetics allude to aesthetics influenced by the iconography of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance – with archaic force, yet formally highly sophisticated, these unique images convey the experience of the sublime and spiritual using the pictorial language of the globalized 21st century. His recent exhibitions include the Grand Palais in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art in New York; he was the US representative at the 46th Venice Biennale, and is currently showing at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence.

Carl Ostendarp will now be presenting his first comprehensive solo-exhibition at Kunstverein Heilbronn in Germany. For his solo shows, he usually creates extensive wall-paintings reminiscent of landscapes on which he positions works on paper and canvas. The linguistic images that are created in front of the viewer's eye, and which, in their onomatopoeic uniqueness, animate the visitor to recite them aloud, oscillate between reading and looking – inevitably suggesting the idea of music and rhythm: reading and looking with added listening. In 2014, Ken Johnson wrote in the New York Times about Carl Ostendarp’s works that they had the same effect as someone belching in church during worship. This admiring observation is aimed at the artist’s oxymoronic skill of combining the incompatible: onomatopoeia from comics with cool color-field or hard-edge painting. Ostendarp lives and works as an art professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where once Vladimir Nabokov worked as a literary professor and counted the American future cult author Thomas Pynchon among his students.

Memory and its use as historiography is a central theme in Dani Gal’s work. Since 2005, the artist has compiled a large archive of historical vinyl records; he combines these sound documents in his installations and performances – often collaborations – with electronically generated sound. He initially deconstructs this historical material, puts it in a contemporary context, and reconstructs in this way – by structuring the previously widely scattered material – a layer of the past that would otherwise remain sensorially irretrievable. He thus stimulates our study of history, opening up a truly surprising additional perspective. Dani Gal examines how history, or rather, how its recording is constructed, packaged, presented and consumed. In addition to numerous records on World War II and its protagonists, it is, above all, those American records of the post-war period that stand out in his collection: speeches by Kennedy, Nixon, Jesse Jackson and LP-collections with original recordings from 1967, 1968 and following years.

It probably all started with Herbert Hinteregger’s childhood dream of being able to cut a piece from the Schwarzsee, a moor lake in his Tyrolean homeland. Looking at the surfaces of his images painted with ballpoint pen ink, it becomes apparent that he has found the perfect painting medium to achieve metallic, shiny, opaque, dark blue surfaces of unfathomable depth. Ballpoint pens are highly pigmented and highly viscous in their consistency, which means they do not leave any trace of brushstrokes, while preserving the painterly blur of a seemingly perpetual flow. The ink is obtained in a long and obsessive process of draining out countless refills for ballpoint pens, and then applied to various base materials such as denim, tulle, brocade and linen. The processual nature of his working method plays an important role in Herbert Hinteregger’s conceptual painting in terms of material language, whereby the production process is decisively characterized by a complete deceleration, leading to a wide range of variations of minimal abstract compositions.

There is an old tree trunk in the foyer of Villa Merkel, a sculpture of about seven meters in height, supported by a slanting, reflective, bright green piece of epoxy resin; a landscape in flowing mist; floating porcelain objects – these are settings from a film script. The work is by JAK. But who is JAK? Did JAK, as we read these lines, already manage to get inside our heads? JAK has been working on the film Soul Blindness since 2013, yet the development process is unlike that of a normal film project. From one exhibition to the next, JAK continues to write the story of the screenplay using various media such as drawing, text, video, sound, sculpture, painting, photo and installation. Continually shot, this film describes how the main character is dealing with agnosia, a psychological anomaly where objects can no longer be unambiguously identified or attributed, and which is therefore also known as “soul blindness”. The book gives an extensive insight into JAK’s work, but there is absolutely no information about who JAK actually is!

JOHN RULE Autumn 2017

It was probably during the 1960s that the medium of painting began to cannibalize itself, and thus entered the perpetual loop of repetition, mutation and transformation where its deformation falls prey to recurrent deformations. Peter Saul is one of the most important protagonists of this deformation process that is, quite mistakenly, always attributed exclusively to Pop Art. In his painterly and graphic work, however, he created a complex amalgam of high and counterculture that combines comics, pop, surrealism, abstract expressionism with the radical (and partly trivial) social critique of the Haschrebellen (Hashish Rebels). As a matter of course, such a painter would have never been a champion of American troops in Vietnam, never a party-supporter of Reagan or Bush, but politically reducing his work to agitprop would mean overlooking the hedonistic impulse of a baroque compositional joy within his images. This first solo show in Europe focuses on the work of the 1960s, as sex and crime, politics, drugs, karma and revolt first began to penetrate the world.

A look at the multifaceted and diverse art scene in Germany, the third edition of “Made in Germany” focuses on production conditions for art in Germany, and the question of how geographic, political and institutional structures as well as new technologies create vital prerequisites for the production of art. By focusing on current production conditions, the show examines to what extent art production might have been redefined. During the five years since the last exhibition, a post-digital generation has grown up and changed art with new networks, apps and DIY instructions. From an international point of view, Germany still has a unique density of institutions (art academies, art colleges, art associations and museums), and the scene in Germany is also one of the most agile production sites in this latest art. Ephemeral art forms and sitespecific installations boom, artists create blogs, offspaces and free spaces for any kind of activity. The expansion of their global mobility and participation in a demanding art market are also considered.

The materials used were characteristic of Sarah Lucas’s work, including concrete, nylon tights and household utensils such as chairs and grilles. After foot washings by the artist on Maundy Thursday, there was a concert afternoon at the Monarch Club in Berlin on Good Friday; Saturday saw the action-painting-happening “1000 Eggs”, where all women present were invited to throw eggs at one of the gallery’s walls. On Easter Sunday, friends of the artist organized an “open mic” and presented their own works – poems, music and visual works – and the finale was an action painting for men with the beautiful title “Ejaculation”, where the sculpture “Silver Hippy” could be sprayed with paint.

In 1967, Peter Roehr and Paul Maenz curated the exhibition “Serial Formations” at the University of Frankfurt’s studio gallery, one of the first ever exhibitions on Minimal Art in Germany. Within the framework of the exhibition series “Minimalism in Germany”, launched in 2005, Daimler Art Collection is attempting to re-stage this historically significant presentation. At that time, it had comprehensively summarized current international minimalist trends, and juxtaposed them with positions by German artists. The selection criterion for the 62 works in total by 48 artists was the principle of serial order as a visual aspect of images and objects. The concepts they were based on, however, could be quite diverse and even contradictory. The European Zero movement was represented, as well as American Minimal and Concept Art, aspects of Nouveau Réalisme, Pop and Op Art. The unique feature of the publication on the current exhibition in Berlin is the complete reprint of the, now very sought-after, original catalog, which is an excellent example of early conceptual book design.

The book is dedicated to artists who lived and worked together in Düsseldorf during the 1970s, and who actively influenced the historical program of Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. It casts a fresh look at the differentiation of the arts of the later post-war period, as well as on subcultural impulses in German-speaking and European countries. The loosely yet cosmopolitan group developed its strategies in the context of, and against the legacy of, German fascism. Through various artistic processes – painting, photography, slide projections, performances, film, and music – political themes such as colonial history, economics and gender were thoroughly examined in this post-Pop political arena. Works and further documentary material, including comics, ephemera, and records, are presented in this exhibition in the same labyrinthine way as the processual collaborations and debates of the artists during the 1970s. Kunsthalle Düsseldorf has served as a central stage for these activities, which is why references to historical exhibitions are a defining part of this volume of the exhibition on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its new building.

Takako Saito though born in Japan, has lived since 1978 mainly in Düsseldorf. She has become internationally known for her objects, artist books, performances and actions in the context of Fluxus. She has always been interested in the world of things and everyday life, to which she adds her individual artistic gesture through interventions and small actions. Natural materials such as stones, mussels, onion peels and chestnuts are her preferred materials, alongside various kinds of paper, plastics, foams and wood pieces. Unmistakable are her carefully crafted object boxes that she has created ever since the 1960s, as well as the numerous “free” chess games. A rather playful approach is characteristic of many of Saito’s works; she is always looking for new game variants beyond fixed rules. The viewers are involved as co-players and co-designers, since the artist has a penchant for the participation strategy, particularly in her “Me and You-Shops” – market stalllike shops where the artist as a saleswoman interacts with the audience. This exhibition will present works from all important phases of her work.

This new book on Manuel Ocampo deals with more than three decades of the artist’s career, from the late eighties up to now. “Fear of a Kitsch Existence” is an indication of how he thinks his artwork should be read. Gathering Ocampo’s work in this publication has been possible due to the artist collaboration and willingness. You will find around three hundred images of his artworks from the beginning of his career until 2017, some of which have been rescued before being lost and others as key representations of a postcolonial discourse that it is clearly explicit through all his work. The project was in hand before the selection of the artist as representative of his country in the Philippine pavilion of the Venice Biennial 2017, where he will show new work. The current volume aims to make accessible an ouevre that is not always easy to understand, despite the apparent popularity of the images and their relationships with an iconography, which nevertheless seems very familiar to us.

In addition to his unique abilities as a composer, song writer, singer and performer, Bob Dylan has also produced a substantial oeuvre in the field of fine art in recent years. The pastel portraits by Bob Dylan entitled “Face Value” were made in 2012. The series is remarkable in that the use of colour to enhance the form, or as an underlying layer rather than in a descriptive manner, avoids the works making unambiguous statements. Consequently, the levels of the portrait and its coloured ground tend to merge. By depicting the subjects of his drawings in this way Bob Dylan gives these portraits both a formal and a surprising thematic twist. He draws a link across the centuries to the traditional pictorial type of the icon, thereby elevating people who appear relatively calm in spite of being marked by the vicissitudes of their lives to an iconic level. The catalogue is supplemented by contributions by the eminent art historian Hans Dieter Huber, the respect musicologist Richard Klein and the important literary scientist and poet Heinrich Detering.

September 2017 9782757211847 | £39.90 Hardback | 240pp | 280 x 246 mm 160 col & b/w ills Rights: UK, Eire, Middle East & Far East only.

The paintings of Francois Bard combine a sharp observation of our age with a personal mythology. At a mid-point between the grand pictorial tradition and a strongly cinematic world, the artist establishes a world that is profound and intimate. A kind of chiaroscuro, his technique deploys a chromatism that is simultaneously flamboyant and dull. The depth of his subjects makes one think of canvas treated like the screen of a cinema, black, intense, with great depth. The vocabulary of Francois Bard draws on the heroines of David Lynch, the tough guys of Martin Scorsese, and more generally the great American road movies. Large formats and photographic framing force the viewer to confrontation. His characters and landscapes although strange appear to us surprisingly familiar. The work of Francois Bard defies categorization. His canvases play with rules of narration and manipulate our wish to look. Francois Bard was born in 1959; he lives and works in Paris.

FROM TREE BARK TO CLOTH: AN ANCIENT ART OF OCEANIA From Southeast Asia to Eastern Polynesia

Edited by Michel Charleux Tapa is a cloth derived from beating the inner part of the bark of certain tropical trees. It is found in Africa and in Mexico, but it is to the tapa of Oceania that this book is dedicated. With over sixty articles written by the greatest specialists in the world, but also, and this is what makes it original, by tapa makers, acknowledged by their island peers as experts, this work of 600 pages leads the reader from South-East Asia - the cradle of the technique of beaten bark over 8000 years ago - to the islands of Oceania, from the West to the East (Solomon, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa) in following the pattern of migrations which led to their peopling. This voyage of discovery across the tapa of the different archipelagos climaxes at the islands which represent two points of the Polynesian triangle: Haiti and Rapa Nui, Easter Island. With more than 500 illustrations, most of them previously unpublished, this book will satisfy all lovers of primitive art.

Imperial Threads brings a new perspective to the Museum of Islamic Art’s collection by showing the connection between three major dynasties – Turkey, Iran and India – who mark the start of the early modern period in Islamic art. Between war, diplomatic relations and political changes, precious objects were transferred across borders, whether as gifts or war booty, and artists pursued careers from one workshop to another. With this interaction, an entirely new distinctive range of motifs emerged, referencing and building upon earlier Islamic tradition and foreign artistic influences. Through the high level of patronage and artistic craftsmanship, patrons and artists succeeded in shaping this cultural exchange.

As the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth century approached in Great Britain, more and more parents and teachers embraced a suggestion from the philosopher John Locke, “learning might be made a play and recreation to children.” Showcasing sixty games from the time that were made for both instruction and delight, this book reflects on a transatlantic market that flourished into and through the nineteenth century. Although games were often printed on linen or board instead of delicate paper, many fell apart thanks to enthusiastic use. But those that do survive open a window onto the time period in which they were created, reflecting its social and moral priorities as well as every educational subject. Georgian and Victorian Board Games: The Liman Collection enables us to follow the course of the Industrial Revolution and the expansion of the British empire alongside changing attitudes toward childhood and education—shining a light on a corner of children’s culture and the adults that created it.

Shining Stone The History of Lithophanes from the 18th to the 20th Century KH. W. Steckelings

Lithophanes reveal their true magic when backlit by flickering light. Hung in windows as decoration or molded into lampshades, lamps, or veilleuses (food and beverage warmers), these three-dimensional images in translucent porcelain became increasingly popular in the mid-19th century. Their motifs, which included genre scenes, idyllic landscapes, tranquil urban scenes, and copies of paintings, provide an impressive depiction of the home life and milieu of the period’s emerging middle class. This comprehensive guide covers not only porcelain objects but also special forms of lithophanes. Shining Stone explores this unique art form particularly in the context of the historical development of lithophane manufacturers from the 18th to the 20th century, the majority of which were located in Germany and France. The book also provides descriptions of individual pieces, with information on product origin, marks, and backstamps. The author sheds light on individual phases of development and interrelationships, and corrects the misinformation and errors that have been propagated over the years.

Christian Dior: The Spirit of Perfumes Edited by Olivier Quiquempois The year 1947 was a crucial one for Christian Dior. It was then that the fashion designer simultaneously founded his maison and his perfume factory in Paris. The success of his first essence, Miss Dior, was so outstanding as to leave its permanent mark in history. Ten years later, on 24 October 1957, Christian Dior’s untimely death conferred a new dimension to a decade characterized by an uncommon destiny. Hence the Musée International de la Parfumerie pays its tribute to this fashion designer-perfumier on the 70th anniversary of Miss Dior and of the New Look. Ico Parisi (Palermo, 1916 – Como, 1996) was one of the driving forces behind the interior design revolution that took place in Italy in the mid-twentieth century. An eclectic character, a ‘Renaissance’ artist, as he defined himself, he stood out for his untiring efforts to bring together architecture and the arts in their plurality. He was responsible for the affirmation of the "new taste" that enabled Italy to outclass the Scandinavian aesthetics adopted as the undisputed paradigm after the War, and to prepare for the ‘Neo-Liberty’ movement. This book, dedicated to his design work, provides the first, exhaustive catalogue of the exceptional body of furniture items and interior design accessories designed by Parisi, from his early collaborations with Cantù artisans in the 1940s through to his industrial production in the 1960s.It also traces the most salient moments of his personal life through a series of photos, anecdotes and images. Parisi’s is the story of a man that is also partly the story of a city, Como, and the story of a country, Italy.

July 2017 9788897395119 | £49.50 Hardback | 240 pp | 300 x 300 mm 200 b/w photos. Rights: Worldwide exc. Italy

More than sixty years since the disappearance, Tazio Nuvolari is more than ever a legend, a symbol of talent, courage and tenacity, loved and remembered as the greatest talent of the golden era of sports cars. This book is a tribute to “him.” Write again about Tazio. Needless? Repetitive? Immodest? No: nothing of his life has lost the freshness of the story, everything seems to have just happened, just annotated by an attentive, passionate chronicler. It is just Tazio, with that extreme face, so out of caliber, that continues to arouse curiosity but also stupor and emotion. Just like the cars and bikes that were driving: monsters to be dominated, conceived and built in the golden years of mechanical creativity, masterpieces of technology that not everyone knows deeply. For all this, “Nuvolari, Lui” was born. History, anecdotes, testimonies, unpublished facets: the man, the rider, his machines, with the contribution of a rich iconography – often unpublished – coming from collections all over the world.

The Conceptual World of the Mystic Philosopher Jacob Böhme Edited by Claudia Brink & Yvonne Wagner, Dresden State Art Collections

September 2017 9783954983278 | £30.00 Hardback | 220 pp | 260 x 220 mm 80 b/w ills Rights: UK & Eire

This volume gathers an international team of scholars to present the thought of the philosopher and mystic Jacob Böhme through his core concepts. One of the most important German thinkers, Böhme made an impact on philosophy, art, literature and religion that resonated well beyond seventeenth-century Germany and that still persists today. Böhme’s dense language drew on discourses as diverse as Christian devotional literature, alchemy and kabbala. This collection takes up the challenge of focusing on Böhme’s key terms in chapters on Creation, the Three Principles, the Qualities, Light, Darkness, Birth, Rebirth, Pilgrimage, Philosophia and even Sound. Böhme developed a language rich in visual metaphors and the chapters are lavishly illustrated. This book helps to establish Böhme as one of the most significant and innovative thinkers of the Early Modern world and it will be fundamental to any future study of his philosophy.

JOHN RULE Autumn 2017

2017 is the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, whose effects can be felt to this day. It was an event of world historic importance, making Russia, or the Soviet Union, into a global power and shaping the entire 20th century. It was also the first experiment in establishing a socialist state, and one which had a substantial and lasting impact. The Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin and the Schweizerisches Nationalmuseum in Zurich have prepared exhibitions dedicated to the Russian Revolution. While the exhibition in Zurich looks at SwissRussian relations from the end of the 19th century through the 1930's, the Berlin exhibition examines the consequences of the revolutionary events in selected European countries, including Great Britain. Both exhibitions accompanied by this volume, featuring articles from twelve authors from Germany, Switzerland, Russia, France and the United Kingdom. The articles portray the revolutionary events from various perspectives, analyse their consequences and effects and explain why these events are still important today.
