Built between 1163 and 1345, the cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris is one of the earliest gothic churches and has long turned into a monument to the cultural memory of France, Europe and the world. Hence there was great horror when in the night of April 14/15, 2019, the historic building was on fire. The pictures of this incident caused us to publish an album with images of the cathedral. It confronts Charles Méryon’s etchings and pictures by great 19th- and early 20th-century photographers such as Edouard Baldus, Eugène Atget, and Charles Nègre—pictures that have engraved themselves into any Paris visitor’s memory—with the images of the night of the fire, hauntingly documenting the loss for mankind.

In 2018 the Italian photographer Francesco Neri won the first August Sander Prize for Portrait Photography of the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur, Cologne, with his portrait study of farmers in his northern Italian homeland. Neri, who studied with Guido Guidi in Ravenna, comes from the analogue tradition of Italian photography. His carefully composed portraits of men, women and children of family owned farms are surprisingly small, as he prints them as contacts from his 8x10 inch color- or black-and-white negatives. As a result they can be reproduced in full size in this book. The light, the backgrounds, the posture, the body language, the gaze of the portrayed people shaped by physical labour are central elements of his quiet images, which document the past, and present and question the future of the still small-scale, family driven, village structures in todays more and more industrialised and globalised agricultural world.

JOHN RULE Spring 2020

The German term Hinterland describes the sparsely populated areas off the cities. As the title of this book it refers to the remote regions of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg- Vorpommern, surrounding the greater area of Berlin. Hans-Christian Schink explains: “On the other hand, the title Hinterland also refers to the imaginary landscapes that emerge from my memory. Landscapes that I know from my childhood….so this series is not about portraying concrete places. My pictures are more the result of a search without a destination.” In his project, that he pursues since 2012, Hans-Christian Schink tries to keep a balance of showing the brittle beauty of this form of landscape whilst transporting an atmosphere of melancholy, which stems from the endangerment of this landscape caused by the permanent exploitation of its resources. The titles of his pictures, using the regular names of the locations, such as: Bei Kublank, Plath, Cölpin, Bei Woldegk, Am Wanzkaer See etc. – have an unfamiliar if not strange, foreign or outdated sound even to German native speakers.

Gauri is celebrated by tribal communities in the southern part of Rajasthan as a forty-day festival that entails fasting and celebration in honour of Lord Shiva and his consort, the Goddess Parvati. Public performances put on as part of the revelry include dance, storytelling, music and worship. The tradition of the Gauri dance has been celebrated for centuries, yet there have been no books in English till now on this mystical and enchanting practice. Photographer Waswo X. Waswo has joined with art historian Sonika Soni to create this book delving into the esoteric world of Gauri dance. Through Waswo’s distinctive studio portraiture, with the photographic prints hand-painted by hand-colourist Rajesh Soni, the astonishing visuals of Gauri costuming and performers is presented in beautiful colour reproduction. In her essay, Sonika Soni explores the history of this ritual dance with an eye to examine both what is known about it, and what still needs to be discovered, keeping central the conflicting stories of its origins and the folk tales that make Gauri the “enigmatic opera” of Mewar.

The Goddess Devi is worshipped during the autumnal festival of Durga Pujo in Bengal every year. In this volume, Peter Bjørn Franceschi presents a visual diary of the mother goddess in the making. The book takes us through the winding lanes of Kumartuli, home to the master artists who craft the clay idols of the Devi for the Durga Pujo. Accompanying these photographs are verses from Sankaracharya’s poetic work in Sanksrit, Saundaryalahari (Waves of Beauty), translated by the scholar Minati Kar. The work is a paean to the Goddess Durga, entwining Advaita Vedanta and Tantra philosophy to paint a splendid picture of Devi. These poetic descriptions serve as a deeper layer to the visuals, and as an alternate way of interpreting the process of image-making. Peter Bjørn Franceschi is a Danish visual artist working from Copenhagen, Kolkata and southern France. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in Europe, the Middle East and India.

For centuries, monsoon winds brought traders from the Middle East to India, and onward to Malaysia and the Indonesian archipelago. Once the new religion of Islam had been established in the land of Arabia, merchants carried their faith to the many ports of call around the Indian Ocean. As Islam peacefully spread through the Indian Ocean littoral, the coastal trading cities responded in extraordinary ways. Modifying the form of the local tropical buildings of timber and stone, communities created a stylistic hybrid for their houses of prayer, the ubiquitous village mosque. An exceptional vernacular ensued, reflecting the unique combination of environment, local materials and building skills, trade and the traders. This volume celebrates a finely curated selection of centuries-old mosques in Kerala, Sumatra, Java and Malaysia. Raised up high by the communities, the mosques are a marvel of timber, soaring spaces and traditional crafts. The 20th and 21st centuries have brought numerous threats to their continued existence; this book explores the fate of these vibrant symbols.

Mutable: Ceramic & Clay Art in India Sindhura D.M., Kristine Michael and Annapurna Garimella

This volume is the first major publication on the vast varieties of ceramic histories and practices in India. The result of the 2017 exhibition ‘Mutable’ at the Piramal Art Museum, this book archives the work of hereditary potters, industrial ceramics, studio pottery and artists who use clay as a medium.Situated within the larger context of the post- Independence craft revival, this volume pays keen attention to the transnational histories of practice through five sections. The section Shift explores the local and international lineages of Indian studio pottery. Object discusses the ways in which clay has been a unique medium of expression for many artists. Utility considers the development of Indian ceramic industries, through lenses of economics and class. Form takes as its subject hereditary potters who negotiate modern-day artistic spaces. Perception focuses on the low-fired water container and its web of connections with its makers and users. The very mutability of clay and its shaper and the resulting dynamism, that produces both tensions and opportunities, are at the centre of this book.

JOHN RULE Spring 2020

This book aims to give Gio Ponti’s ceramic works a precise chronological order based on correspondence and documentation from the Doccia Museum’s archive. Ceramics designed by Gio Ponti for Richard-Ginori are well known to collectors and design scholars around the world. Their aesthetic qualities, for the originality of Ponti’s inventions and their flawless execution, are often enhanced, but no one had previously faced a systematic philological study dedicated to the whole corpus preserved at Doccia Museum. This volume and its catalog sheets are intended to fill this gap. They are the result of a meticulous study of artifacts and documentary sources: autograph correspondence by Gio Ponti, drawings, catalogs, registers, rate tables, vintage magazines etc. On the basis of verified data this volume reconstructs the detailed history of the decorations and forms, certifying their attribution and investigating the iconography. Tying up all the threads that bind the figurative explosion of Gio Ponti’s ceramics, this catalog is the necessary foundation in order to understand his style in depth and to value the immense patrimony preserved by Doccia Museum.

Apostles in Prussia: The Raphael Tapestries of the Bode Museum Alexandra Enzensberger

January 2020 9783954985241 | £24.00 Hardback | 136 pp | 210 x 240 mm 81 col & b/w ills Rights: UK & Eire

From 1515 onward, Raphael worked on a cycle of tapestries for the Sistine Chapel depicting the work of the apostles Peter and Paul. His drawings later served as models for numerous other tapestry series. In the 19th century, one of them came from London to Berlin where it was displayed in prominent places on the Museum Island until its loss in World War II. The story of the Berlin Raphael tapestries is told from four perspectives. An art-historical view deals with the subjects, the genesis and the original arrangement of the scenes in the Sistine Chapel. A look at the history of restoration sheds light on the discourses about the “proper” handling of works of art in the 19th century. The reconstruction of the first large special exhibition in the Berlin Royal Museum in 1848 shows what forms of presentation prevailed in European galleries of the time. Finally, historical photographs of the objects and their exhibition venues will be used to reconstruct about 100 years of the Berlin presentation history of the Raphael tapestries.

Next to the antiquities, the collection of bronzes and baroque sculptures is the most important part of the Dresden Sculpture Collection. About 100 works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods found their place in the newly designed Semper Gallery. This was preceded by an intensive examination of the holdings, which also brought to light previously unknown treasures. All these findings are presented in this volume. With its selection of absolute highlights—from Filarete, Giambologna, Adriaen de Vries, Susini and Foggini, Corneille van Cleve, Guillaume Coustou to Paul Heermann and Balthasar Permoser—it conveys an impression of the beauty and scope of the Dresden Collection.

Mengs’s Cast Collection at the Semper Gallery Around 1800, plaster casts of ancient statues were held in high esteem and considered an adequate replacement for the originals. Until today, the pure white in which they shone is responsible for the idea of a “white antiquity.” Since 2016, a selection of works from the cast collection of Dresden court painter Anton Raphael Mengs has been exhibited at the Semper building. The collection, mainly of casts copied from antique works, once comprised 833 items, of which about one half are still preserved. Nevertheless, Mengs’s collection is today one of the largest preserved holdings of historic plaster casts from the 17th and 18th centuries. This volume presents more than 20 of these objects—including the famous statues of Apollo Belvedere, Hercules Farnese, the Capitoline Venus and a portrait of the first Roman emperor Augustus—and explains historical connections and mythological sources.

The Porcelain Cabinet in the Tower Room of Dresden’s Royal Palace Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Porzellansammlung; Anette Loesch

January 2020 9783954985029 | £48.00 Hardback | 320 pp | 300 x 240 mm 295 col & b/w ills Rights: UK & Eire

For a good two hundred years the Tower Room on the piano nobile of the Dresden Residence served as a unique showroom for the electoral-royal porcelain collection. Here, alongside vases from China and Japan, King August III presented the finest products of his manufactory at Meissen, on gilded consoles against red-lacquered wall panels. In the bombing of Dresden in February 1945 the royal palace was almost entirely consumed by fire; as for the porcelain pieces, despite having been evacuated in 1943, the majority of them fell prey to plundering and destruction. Now that the porcelain cabinet has been reconstructed, some of the extant pieces – notably the spectacular ‘Elements’ garniture modelled by Johann Joachim Kaendler and two ‘Dragoons’ vases – can be displayed again. Additionally, ten silver guéridons serve as a reminder of the room’s earlier function as a ‘Silver Buffet’. This book traces the history of the cabinet from its origins in the 1730s to its destruction in 1945. It includes a comprehensive catalogue section.

The metalwork holdings in the Khalili Collection are wide ranging and diverse, dating from the 7th century to the 20th century, and covering most of the Islamic world, from the Mediterranean to Brunei, and from Egypt to Central Asia. With over 900 entries, this four-part volume considers almost every type of vessel encountered in Islamic metalwork. The pieces are grouped according to their form and function and categories include vessels used for ablutions, food, drink, lighting and furniture. The catalogue is accompanied by a number of introductory essays examining the principal periods into which the volume has been divided. Other essays consider the importance of silver within the study of Islamic metalwork in the pre-Mongol period; the range of animal forms found in metal in the medieval period; the significance of astrological imagery; and metalwork from the Mamluk and post-Mamluk revival periods. Finally, the technology of Islamic metalwork is examined in detail, with a discussion of medieval literary sources, and an examination of metals and their alloys, their sources and methods of manufacture.

June 2020 9789385360541 | £30.00 Paperback | 128 pp | 280 x 216 mm 90 colour ills Rights: Worldwide exc. India, USA & Canada

If there is one grand tale that has impacted Asia, it has to be the Ramayana, the great Indian epic. In this sumptuously illustrated volume, the author highlights the various South and Southeast Asian traditions and variations of the tale, with nearly a hundred superb watercolour paintings. From India, the Rama tale is presumed to have travelled along three routes—by land, the northern route took the story from Punjab and Kashmir into China, Tibet, and East Turkestan; by sea, the southern route carried the story from Gujarat and South India into Java, Sumatra, and Malaya; and again by land, the eastern route delivered the story from Bengal into Burma, Thailand, Laos, and to some extent, Cambodia and Vietnam. In Indonesia and Malaysia, the epic has been incorporated into the Islamic tradition; Theravada Buddhism in Thailand and Cambodia adopted Hindu divinities from the Rama story into its fold. With stunning original art, this volume celebrates this all-inclusive tradition of the epic, foregrounding it as a cultural phenomenon across time and space.

The Pushtimarg, or the Path of Grace, is a Hindu tradition whose ritual worship of the deity Krishna has developed in close relationship to a distinct genre of early-modern Hindi prose hagiography. This volume introduces readers to the most popular hagiographic text of the Pushtimarg—the Chaurasi Vaishnavan ki Varta, or “Narratives of Eighty-Four Vaishnavas,” which tells the sacred life stories of the community’s first preceptor Vallabhacharya (1497–1531) and his most beloved disciples. At the core of these narratives are descriptions of how Vallabhacharya’s disciples cultivated intimate relationships with Lord Krishna through ritual performances known as seva, or loving service. Despite the widespread practice of illustrating seva through painting, these narratives, which showcase everyday men and women, have rarely been visually depicted. This book focuses on the only extant Chaurasi Vaishnavan ki Varta manuscript dated to the beginning of the 18th century, now in artist Amit Ambalal’s collection.

The Kidai Shoran Scroll: Tokyo Street Life in the Edo Era Ozawa Hiromu and Kobayashi Tadashi

March 2020 9784866581323 | ÂŁ37.00 Hardback | 108pp | 300 x 221 mm 200 colour ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Japan, USA & Canada

The Kidai Shoran is a magnificent painted Japanese scroll, an artistic rendering of one of the most iconic streets of Edo (as Tokyo was then called) at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It covers five blocks of the main shopping thoroughfare leading south from the Imagawa Bridge to the bridge at Nihonbashi. Over its more than 12-meter length, an artist has given us an almost cinematic look at urban life during the Edo period. More than 1,600 people are depicted here. Their activities are portrayed in rich and loving detail: here a young pilgrim receives alms, there a blind masseur rushes to his next appointment, on the other side of the street, a construction crew raises the framing that will become a new shop. Making an appearance in the scroll are: 88 Shops, 32 Children, 4 Oxen, 1,439 Men, 20 Dogs, 2 Falcons, 200 Women, 13 Horses, and 1 Monkey. In this book, the authors bring these details to life with expert commentary and knowledgeable analysis of the times when the scroll was created. JOHN RULE Spring 2020

Ito Jakuchu lived during the eighteenth century, the golden age of art in the Edo period (1603–1868), a time when some of the greatest artistic names vied for originality in the pictorial arts. Born into a family of vegetable retailers, Jakuchu developed an interest in painting and began his self-education in the art by studying the Kano style then predominant in Japan as well as old Chinese classics from the Yuan and Ming dynasties. He also studied the meticulously depicted bird-and-flower paintings of the Qing dynasty. He eventually established his own richly colored style of painting that portrayed the multitudinous plants and animals of the natural world. This style is firmly based on the Japanese art of his period and geographical area, but it also, as the author states, “marks a certain high point in the history of East Asian painting.” This book includes full-color illustrations of Jakuchu’s lifework (the thirty scrolls of Colorful Realm of Living Beings) as well as other important paintings, arranged chronologically and accompanied by commentary from a variety of perspectives.

In 1919, the program of the State Bauhaus promised a modern education for the talented, regardless of age and gender, which drew many young women to apply. The “Bauhaus-Girl Type,” described in a January 1930 issue of the magazine The Week, knew what she wanted and would succeed. This volume’s essays question the euphoria of the time period with the knowledge of Bauhaus members’ subsequent destinies. These essays take as exemplary the biographies of Gertrud Arndt, Marianne Brandt, Margarete Heymann, and Margaretha Reichardt, both during their training and as Bauhaus graduates.

Since the 1970s Cindy Sherman (born in Glen Ridge, NJ, in 1954) has caused a stir in the art world with her photographic self-stagings. From the beginnings, Schirmer/Mosel has accompanied her rise to internationally fame that started with her famous series Untitled Film Stills. In 1982 we published the first of eight publications of her work to date. Neither her subjects nor her artistic realization – acting as the director, photographer, and performer of her motifs – have lost their relevance to this day. Quite the contrary: her multilayered examination of themes of identity and social clichés are hot topics in our age of increasingly public gender and transgender discussions. The exhibition, The Cindy Sherman Effect, organized by Kunstforum Wien explores the influence of Cindy Sherman’s work on artists such as Sophie Calle, Pipilotti Rist, Gillian Wearing, Zanele Muholi, Sarah Lucas, Candice Breitz, Markus Schinwald, Douglas Gordon, Samuel Fosso and many more.

January 2020 9783954985197 | £ 28.00 Paperback | 160 pp | 280 x 240 mm 300 col & b/w ills Rights: UK & Eire

Outdoor nudes, rugged mountain worlds, portraits of friends or literary figures such as Dostoyevsky’s famous Raskolnikov—in a space of only a few years before his untimely death, painter Hermann Scherer (1893-1927) created an impressive oeuvre. Today he is considered one of the most important expressionists in Switzerland. Inspired by the paintings of Edvard Munch, and especially in collaboration with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Scherer developed an expressive stylistic idiom, painting in strong, bright colors. His works are about longings and inner conflicts, love and passion, fear and loneliness, crimes and disorders. This volume presents pictures, some of them painted on both sides, works on paper and sculptures from his last three years of work. The essays deal with, among other topics, Scherer’s self-perception, his involvement with Dostoyevsky, his relationship to Kirchner and the perspective from which this relationship was received.

JOHN RULE Spring 2020

A new encounter with the exceptional artist Ralf Winkler aka A. R. Penck (1939-2017). This publication looks at Penck’s films, music and writing and presents the artist in the Dresden environment that he lived in until his departure from the GDR in August 1980. Those years were crucial to Penck’s understanding of art, and Dresden is where he developed his “World and System Pictures”, the “Standart” concept and his alter egos. Being refused admittance to the Association of Visual Artists, and deprived of public exhibition opportunities in the GDR, he managed to open, in conjunction with others, opportunities for himself: through jam sessions in the studio, collective (over)paintings with the “Lücke” artist group or by shooting, together with Wolfgang Opitz, Super-8 films. With essays by, among others, Simon Elson, Claus Löser and Pirkko Rathgeber and numerous statements by artist colleagues and companions.

“Ophelia” is an interdisciplinary architectural media artwork that explores the links between the history of hysteria and the destruction of the biosphere. In her first monograph, artist Nadja Verena Marcin, who works in Germany and the U.S., presents the world tour of the work with which she has been traveling since 2017. Using her own identity and corporeality, Marcin explores and deconstructs social roles and deals with topics such as gender, history, morality, politics, environment, and power structures. In addition to this project, which is illuminated from different perspectives, the volume presents further performance-based works, videos and photographs of the artist. Contributions of renowned art critics such as Dr. Uwe Rüth, Dr. Kimberly Rhodes, Dr. Kathy Battista, Susan Silas and Liam Gillick look at Marcin’s complex work, which also deals with cultural roots, psychological conditioning and sexuality, as well as questioning social structures.

Combining the entire artist estate in the Estate Otto Muehl has made it possible, for the first time ever, to showcase a representative cross-section of works from all chapters of the artist’s creative periods in the exhibition rooms of Sammlung Friedrichshof. In addition to documents from the early days of Viennese Actionism, which to date have dominated perceptions and interpretations of Otto Muehl’s works, the catalogue presents select examples of pictorial, graphic, and cinematic works created from the early 1970s on. Sargy Mann, Late Paintings Olivia Laing Published to accompany the exhibition ‘Sargy Mann, Late Paintings’ curated by Chantal Joffe. This book features the essay ‘A Great Deal of Light’ by writer and critic Olivia Laing. In the last ten years of his life Sargy Mann painted what many people consider to be his best work. This is unusual in most artists and in Mann’s case it seems extraordinary in light of the way his vision changed. In the central essay in this book Olivia Laing talks about the way Mann was forced to embrace ‘more of himself’ in his late paintings and how a lifetime of looking at art and looking at the world came together to create a series of works charged with emotion and filled with light. January 2020 9780955898006 | £250.00 Hardback | 224pp | 275 x 230 mm 193 colour ills Rights: Worldwide

The book is based around twenty seven paintings chosen by the artist to represent different periods in his life as a painter. The first is from 1963 and the most recent is from 2007. Each chapter takes one of the twenty seven paintings as its starting point, but the text as a whole builds to tell the story of how he has continued to paint about the world as he sees and experiences it, while his sight has deteriorated to the point of total blindness. Photographer Peter Mann (the artists son) has photographed each of the twenty seven paintings where they are hanging today, in collectors houses around the world, some still in the artist’s studio. The book also includes Peter Mann’s photographs of Sargy at home or at work in his studio alongside numerous reproductions of paintings, drawings and archive material. The special edition of this book contains a signed and numbered lithograph ‘Frances in the corner chair’, made in an edition of one hundred for this edition.

Bindu: Space and Time in Raza’s Vision Geeti Sen

The Bindu has been the leitmotif in S.H. Raza’s work, growing in meaning over many years. To this primordial symbol he was introduced as a boy of eight years, in his native village of Kakaiya in Madhya Pradesh. The intensity of the experience remained, pursuing him as a lodestar, surfacing many years later when he was in France with dynamic force as The Black Sun. Raza’s concern with nature was to explore the elementary principles of time and space which govern the universe. To express these fundamental concepts which form the basis of Indian thought, he used the principles of pure geometry. His use of the point, line square, circle and triangle compose part of a universal language—explored equally by the pioneers of abstract art in 20th century Europe and traditional shilpins in ancient India. This book traces the evolution of a vision over fifty years of painting by an artist who retained his Indian sensibility.

Ganesh Haloi: Form & Play Soumik Nandy Majumdar

Ganesh Haloi was born in Jamalpur, in present-day Bangladesh, in 1936, and moved to Kolkata in 1950. The set of paintings explored in this volume, also exhibited at a show of the same name, has a specific association with nature in water bodies. Haloi’s observation of the submerged and floating aquatic plants, their gentle movements and lifecycle has been an enchanting experience, which resurrects continually through glowing layers of colours and floating shapes and lines. He also induces an incessant drama that seems to be an organic part of nature and independent of any human intervention. But when this hydrosphere dries up or disappears, Haloi reacts profoundly with an inevitable pain. This volume attempts to illuminate these recent works and their expression of a pain that is personal as much as it is historical. Soumik Nandy Majumdar presently teaches in the Department of History of Art, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan. He is also the author of 8 Bengal Masters: Miracles of Existence (Mapin, 2015).

JOHN RULE Spring 2020

Lightning was created in 1975, during a controversial period in India’s history, to be the backdrop of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s Emergency speech. Titled Lightning, because it came about in a flash, the masterpiece is made up of twelve massive panels with ten wild, white horses charging through an open space. The significance of the painting is heightened not only by its sheer size or brilliant rendering but also the by times it was executed during and the ideologies it stands for. This book was conceived in honour of M.F. Husain, and various anecdotal stories and interviews on the painting form a part of this book. It is an attempt to create a whole story around this masterpiece; every brush stroke and every inch of the canvas has a story, secretly tucked away in the midst of the powerfully rendered horses, that is left for the beholder to decipher.

Sayed Haider Raza: The Bombay Years 1943-1950 Ashvin E. Rajagopalan & Sanjana Srinivasan

Much is known about Sayed Haider Raza and his 73-year-long career as one of India’s most prominent modernists. It would seem that every aspect of his journey has been thoroughly documented and researched. Yet, many of Raza’s formative years, spent in Bombay from 1943 to 1950, remain a mystery. This volume attempts to shed light on the earliest decade of Raza’s career, which, in addition to being little known, is also widely overlooked in terms of historical relevance. The research, for the first time, aims to provide a microscopic view into Raza’s life— his commercial commissions, travel, personal life, associations with the European community — within the larger context of the thriving metropolis of Bombay during the 1940s. In retracing his footsteps chronologically, this volume seeks to present a much deeper understanding of his artistic origins, and provide crucial insight into his earliest sense of light and colour (which he eventually came to be known for), all the while being a much larger case study in how artists struggle, explore and emerge over the years.

Manoj Dutta was born in Kolkata (then Calcutta) in 1956. Despite having no formal art education, he soon came to the fore as a talented artist in the late seventies. His art draws on “traditional” ideas of art—particularly folk art—but Dutta integrates these modes with a distinct modern sensibility, especially in his treatment of contemporary events. This volume by the renowned art critic Manasij Majumdar takes as its subject Manoj Dutta, “one of [his] favourite artists”. Majumdar has admired for many years Dutta’s paintings and drawings, which tend to look spontaneously home-grown, yet modernist at the same time. Today, his works have travelled far and wide, admired and collected by art-lovers worldwide, who appreciate in his art a lucid, unalloyed expression of something very much native to the Indian soil. Based on the collections accessible in Kolkata and Delhi, as well as Dutta’s own collection, the author traces here the major trends in the artist’s oeuvre, revealing its unique blend of “Indianness” and personal idiom.

The Outside had a romantic sovereignty in the last century as a rebellious alternative to traditional art and as an antiinstitutional foil to modern art. The outsider artist was sometimes untrained, sometimes mad or criminal or savage, sometimes naif, usually eccentric, idiosyncratic or non-conformist, often demonic or visionary. Over the past couple of decades, however, the characterisation of the outsider artist as alien, abnormal and disenfranchised as increasingly been challenged as a neo-colonial phantasm of otherness.

JOHN RULE Spring 2020

Remnants of Days Past is an epic journey into Japan’s past. It is a comprehensive look at the Tokugawa rule and the Edo period, an age in which the civilization of “Old Japan” was still on display and which, for better or worse, ceased to exist with the advent of modernization. Watanabe covers in great detail several topics pertaining to this civilization, including the status and position of the various social classes, views of women and children, attitudes towards sex, labor, and the body and religious beliefs, as well as the unique cosmology behind this civilization. Watanabe makes use of a number of works written by foreign observers who visited Japan from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji to support his views. In this book one can take a trip back in time and read through a treasure trove of journals written by foreigners who visited Japan from the end of the Edo period until the end of the Meiji period. This is a massive work that takes an in-depth look at what modern Japan has lost.
