On June 2018 the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza presented a monographic exhibition devoted to Victor Vasarely (Pécs, 1906 – Paris, 1997), one of the principal exponents of Op Art. Comprising works from the Vasarely Museum in Budapest, the Victor Vasarely Museum in Pécs, the Fondation Vasarely in Aix-en- Provence and prominent loans from private collections, the exhibition aimed to offer an overall vision of the life and work of this Hungarian painter whose best output was created in France. The catalogue for this exhibition includes works from all the principal phases of Vasarely’s career in order to present a chronological survey of his artistic evolution. Readers will thus be able to appreciate the key role played by the artist in the development of geometrical postwar abstraction and to learn about the experiments based on his artistic principles and theoretical reflections which he undertook with the aim of bringing art and society closer together.

Paul Cézanne / Rainer Maria Rilke Edited by Bettina Kaufmann

June 2018 9783829608473 | £39.95 Hardback | 200 pp | 260 x 200mm 69 col & b/w ills Rights: UK & Eire

In October 1907, an exhibition commemorating the French painter Paul Cézanne, who had died one year earlier, took place in the context of the Salon d’Automne in Paris. Rainer Maria Rilke, then 32 years old and living in Paris serving as secretary to the sculptor Auguste Rodin, visited the exhibition several times and wrote about his impressions in a series of letters to his wife, the sculptor Clara Rilke Westhoff in Germany. The poet’s reports evince his deep emotional shock evoked by Cézanne’s art. In the last years of his life Rilke acknowledged the painter and his artistic concept to be his aesthetic model. The Swiss art historian Bettina Kaufmann has reconstructed, for the first time, the list of all paintings exhibited for this publication. Providing, for the first time, an integrated view of all painting of the exhibition and their echo in Rilke’s letters, The 1907 Paris Exhibition reveals the inter relation between visual art and its influence on this poet in a way previously unpublished.

Cézanne and the Past Tradition and Creativity Edited by Judith Gesko This publication contains the essays presented at the symposium Cézanne and the Past: tradition and Creativity organised in the occasion of the Cézanne and the Past. Tradition and Creation exhibition at the Museum of Fine arts, Budapest. The essays written by the invited lecturers (all internationally renowned scholars) examine different aspects of Cézanne’s relationship to the past from a new, original point of view which focused on different themes and issues that could not be dealt with in the exhibition and its catalogue.

The book is the first ever publication of correspondence between Emil and Ada Nolde with Paul and Lily Klee. Any encounter with the unknown seemed to always inspire Emil Nolde’s artistic work. In his oeuvre there are great number references to the grotesque, the fantastic and the exotic – a fascination he shared with Paul Klee. Grotesques enabled both to critically comment on contemporary events. Fantastic depictions in Nolde’s work stem from the serious examination of the unknown and uncanny and, accordingly, take a central position in his work, while in Paul Klee’s work, the realm of ghosts, demons and other hybrid beings as an exciting parallel world seems to rather serve a kind of edification. The volume at hand presents works by Nolde that until now might have been only of marginal interest, but were of great importance and deserve our full attention. The book fills an academic void, and hitherto unknown aspects of a mutually inspiring friendship come to light.

Always Different, Always the Same. An Essay on Art and Systems Edited by Lynn Kost

August 2018 9783864422553 | £40.00 Paperback | 200pp | 270 x 210 mm 150 colour ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Germany, Austria, Switzerland & Netherlands.

During the 1960s, the art world’s interest in systems grew quite conspicuously. It ran parallel to the social upheavals and the fundamentally critical view of the system by the '68 movement. Rather more consequential, from today’s point of view, were the technological advances. The development of cybernetics, communication networks and computer systems facilitated extensive networks, powerful data processing and turned the exchange of information into an important social and economic factor. The exhibition and this publication consider art of the 1960s and early 1970s with regard to systems thinking, and conceive it as communication and as a critique of the system. It is above all the works of Minimal Art and Conceptual Art that dealt with the principles of linguistic communication systems and thereby with differentiations and repetitions. Further significant features included semiotics, series, regularity and the contextualization of the architectural and institutional environment. The works formally used the principles of systems thinking, to then debate them in terms of content. The viewers had to take up position both spatially and intellectually, and thus turned into significant parts of the works. Fifty years later, systems thinking is more existent than ever, and through digitization it has become indispensable in our understanding of industrial societies. Complex systems create networks of knowledge, evaluate data, control information flows and determine decision-making and production processes. They form our environment in which we mainly strive to achieve system compatibility, availability and scope. The exhibition and publication show representative works of the 1960s and 1970s in combination with contemporary art that examines nowadays systemically important issues around the nature of processes, data processing, information distortion and system compatibility. Artists included: Carl Andre, Art & Language, John Baldessari, Walead Beshty, Stanley Brouwn, Peter Buggenhout, Angela Bulloch, Hanne Darboven, Matias Faldbakken, Corsin Fontana, Wade Guyton, Bethan Huws, Iman Issa, Donald Judd, On Kawara, Yves Klein, Sol LeWitt, Piero Manzoni, !Mediengruppe Bitnik, Robert Morris, Charlotte Prodger, Ad Reinhardt, Michael Riedel, Robert Ryman, Jan Schoonhoven, Frank Stella, Sturtevant, Rémy Zaugg

In his colourful paintings, Danish painter and writer Asger Jorn (1914–1973) creates dynamic pictorial worlds that demonstrate in part a humorous and playful lightness yet also an apocalyptic melancholy. Driven by his keen interest in Scandinavian tradition, not least in response to the adverse times, Jorn has tirelessly painted and written, while also creating an extensive body of ceramic works. In his paintings he uses an exceptionally powerful imagery that oscillates between abstraction and figuration. Throughout his career, Asger Jorn was in contact with many of his fellow artists, co-founding member of the CoBrA group and later of the Situationist International. The extensive book offers a comprehensive selection of around 60 works from the 1930s to 1970s. The works presented in this book are an eloquent testimony to the intensity and continuing relevance of his work, and are unquestionably part of the canon of 20th-century art.

Oct 2018 9783864422638 | £25.00 Paperback | 24pp | 350 x 265 mm 20 colour ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Germany, Austria, Switzerland & Netherlands.

David Czupryn (b. 1983) studied under Georg Herold, Lucy McKenzie and Tomma Abts. He’s a master of trompe l’oeil, the century-old art of visual deception that makes an unexpected comeback in his work. With brush and paint he creates mimetic imitations of surfaces; individual marks and gestures are thus negated in an almost provocative manner. The paintings – David Czupryn works with strong harmonic contrasts and layers of translucent paint – appear seamless, they are not photorealistic, but illusionistically three-dimensional. The mystery that he pursues, however, is not rooted in the tradition of Dark Romanticism, but rather reminiscent of Alexander Calder and Naum Gabo, and of course also to the mischievous works by Georg Herold. David Czupryn's images can thus be understood without much ado as painted installations in which constructivism, kinetics and surrealism revel in ironic original states. Or to employ a neologism: In this case, Calder, Dalí and Herold share an app.

“Hommage à Georg Baselitz” by Siegfried Gohr, formulated meticulously and analytically based on the oeuvre and the career of its creator, has appeared closely following the captivating exhibition at Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin. Gohr’s text provides a coherent outline, highlighting the art historically relevant achievements by an artist who has not only been repeatedly characterized as one of the great German artists but, in view of the works in his remix phase, has recently been considered of great current relevance and had his 80th birthday in January for which this staple softcover had been published. Siegfried Gohr manages to elegantly reflect this in his text, in which an old leather armchair is just as significant as Baselitz’s self-imposed outsider role and his ever new, often almost revolutionary pictorial inventions.

Against the background of her own experiences as a migrant, Jeanno Gaussi (b.1973 in Kabul) examines issues of cultural identity from multiple perspectives using a variety of media. She gained international recognition in 2012 with her work at documenta 13 in Kassel and Kabul. “Jeanno Gaussi’s work,” says Burcu Dogramaci in her lucid catalogue contribution, “basically feeds on travel, stays (not only) in places known to her from previous visits, and which she might (re-) visit through research, investigations, and her work in progress as well as in situ. She transports stories, works and memories from one place to another, where they are then put into new contexts. She places familiar and foreign aspects into constellations that form new spaces.” The book presents the installations at Schwartzsche Villa and juxtaposes them with works of similar content by the artist, and illuminates in detail the background of their origins.

Katrin Plavčak’s paintings refer to history of art as well as popular culture, for instance when she uses set pieces of comics. These themes are transformed by her critical view, her ingenuity and her tremendous creative power into artistically completely independent and irritatingly current commentaries on our political-social and cultural present. Surrealism, science fiction and verism enter into a disturbing alliance and generate what the artist calls “amazement” and “personal entertainment”. And then there is this couch in Katrin Plavčak’s Vienna studio – at a distance of four kilometres from the former location of Sigmund Freud’s famous couch. It is at the centre of the artist’s latest work, which uses this motif to develop various themes, from the subject of “painter and model” to the pertinent aspects of Freudian depth psychology. At 2nd June there had been unveiled her recent work, a monument to FALCO, near St. Pölten, the home of FALCO’s father.

JOHN RULE Autumn 2018

This book presents for the first time a wide selection of paintings by Marcus Weber (b.1965) who lives in Berlin. They are narrative tongue-in-cheek images, allusive group portraits and urban landscapes with grotesque re-wordings of social orders, and caricatured and exaggerated individual characters. There are flashes of painterly sophistication, so that some works may be read as a capriccio, desolate and romantic at the same time. All in all, this creates a grotesque mixture mocking each and every hierarchy, based as much on productive bridging into the realm of comics by Georg Herriman as on art history. Weber is a genre painter in the best tradition who paints images of society. As a subtle and multi-layered reaction to current political and social conditions; accordingly, the New York Times (May 2018), on the occasion of his first solo exhibition in the United States, attested to the artist a surprisingly up-to-date approach in his emulating the immutability of real life.

Markus Proschek (b.1981), born in Austria and now living in Berlin, seems to invariably perceive subliminal Nazi aesthetics and totalitarian architectures as artistic challenges. The bronze sculpture of the “Schwimmerin” (2006), painted in oil, is one such case. It refers in a certain way to the pictorial tradition of Psyche or Narcissus, but oscillates aesthetically as a Breker-esque beauty between Nazi bombast and Bauhaus coolness. Proschek’s highly subtle works aim to trace this ambivalent balance between ideological appropriation and works of art that are open to interpretive manipulation. The canonic repertory is thus parodistically confronted with the possibility of its disavowal when it is presented with an element of insubordination. Jacques Derrida already emphasized that culture and art do not constitute a stable currency in the sense that meaning derives only from the relationship between things, which at the same time makes obsolete the idea that there actually is something like an original, true meaning.

With quiet composure, the sculptures and paintings by Paul Schwer (b.1951) intervene in architectures and features of the landscape. His repertoire of forms and materials has focused on sculpture, since it appears to poignantly reflect cultural and social conditions. It all began in the late 1980s in paintings with figurative motifs; their materiality seemed to dissolve in blurry color constellations. Then, during the 1990s, he started to work three-dimensionally, his paintings left the wall. The result are works that are rough, brittle and seemingly crafty, but also seem to have a special aura; they are simply beautiful. Critics recognized in them a mixture of poetic exuberance and softness that moves back and forth between the poles of (constructed) statics and (contingent) dynamics, or quoted from a song title by Einstürzende Neubauten: No beauty without danger. With his heroic, self-effacing idea of artistic authorship in the moment of dangerous beauty, Paul Schwer confirms this characterization of the artist with adventurous heart!

JOHN RULE Autumn 2018

What does landscape mean today? Still the romantic ideal of a diversified natural, agricultural and settlement area? Modern landscapes today are often “non-places”. They bear traces of economic interventions, changing demarcations, are marked by displacement and war as well as by urban sprawl and mining. Quite often, only a kind of residual nature remains, where a few ruins tell of historical events. Barren landscapes that speak of past violence are degraded to (illustrative) material. At the same time, (war) memories are visibly embodied in architectural monuments from the 20th century. In this exhibition artists and artist groups bring the theme of landscape to life. Landscapes between fiction, symbolism and documentation are presented, and they appeal to our ability to read and decipher these images – and, quite naturally, call upon our imagination and our ability to feel empathy. Artists include Marianna Christofides, Luc Delahaye, Cyprien Gaillard, Markus Karstieß, Thomas Kellner, Anselm Kiefer, Aglaia Konrad, Andreas Mühe, Paul Nash, Alexandra Navratil, Paul Virilio and Kristof Vrancken.

Qin Yufen (b.1954 in Shandong, lives in Beijing and Berlin) is one of the leading Chinese artists of her generation. In her large-scale installations she works with barbed wire, bamboo, silk and clothes hangers – a collection of materials that has since come to be her trademark. In her work she often reflects on political and social concerns yet not in a conspicuous way. In her earlier installations, she preferred to focus on the cultural past of China and, against this background, her own influences and identity, today she is primarily concerned with the global increase of victimization. The spaces and the works enter into a compositional relationship that may be described as an aesthetic state of tension between emptiness and intervention. The result are “images” of a reality in which, to name just two of the materials used, the contrast of silk and barbed wire represent the contradictions that tend to determine modern life.

The book provides a multifaceted insight into the work of Austrian artist Sabrina Haunsperg (b.1980) and presents works from the last ten years as well as some fresh from the studio. Sabrina Haunsperg creates colourful, dynamic and mostly large-format paintings using different techniques and materials. She attaches great importance to the use of highquality paints, which she mixes according to traditional recipes. She applies the paint to the canvas with a brush, pen, spray gun, or by pouring it with vigorous physical exertion. Careful planning and experimental curiosity result in superimposed paint surfaces, interweaving structures of paint and energetic color explosions. The results are paintings that captivate the viewer with their exciting relationship between image surface and depth. Intangible spaces are created that leave room for various connotations. From 2001 to 2008, Sabrina Haunsperg studied painting at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Helmut Federle, and was a master student of Herbert Brandl; she currently lives and works in Dusseldorf.

Walter Pichler (1936–2012) gained fame in the 1960s with technoid, seemingly prosthetic-like structures that were inspired by the aircraft and car industry and designed for a futuristic-mediatized world. The provocative spatial utopias and visionary “prototypes” that he developed together with architects Hollein and Abraham were legendary; shown 1967 at MoMa New York. The book focuses on five significant early sculptures, accompanying with materials help to embed them into the context of their genesis. In addition to Pichler’s approach to drawing in order to examine his ideas, two formal aspects of his work come to the fore – the principle of doubling or mirroring, particularly obvious in the hollow as well as negative form, and so called pillar structure. This conclusively elaborated volume illustrates that Walter Pichler’s work, genuinely conceived from an artist’s point of view, managed to add – beyond its substantial contribution to “radical architecture” – to a progressive, reflection of modernism, preserving formal and humane aspects.

The paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic art presented here open up new perspectives, focussing on gentle, yet critical voices, and thus point beyond the style of art decreed by the East German state. Even traditional genres such as portrait, landscape and still life, in their refusal to bow to ideological objectives, here offer an unexpected view of GDR reality. Dreams, desires and projections are what come to the fore in these pictures and sculptures. The tension between intimacy and world-view gave rise to a specific artistic language that went beyond the stereotypes of Socialist Realism and also found expression in actions and performances. A selection of exhibits from the Schwerin Mail Art archive shows that the Mail artist network then in existence facilitated a kind of a cross-border communication. Items on loan from artists such as Michael Morgner and Holger Stark give insight into Action and Performance Art with some reference to Mecklenburg. Well-researched essays by historians and art historians demonstrate the importance and uniqueness of the Schwerin collection.

The Baselitz Way: Nonconformity as imagination’s wellspring Edited by Konstanze Rudert & Günther Gercken Georg Baselitz is not only one of the world’s most prolific and most disputed artists, he has also long been a knowledgeable collector of Mannerist prints, of which he became aware during his scholarship stay at the Villa Romana in Florence in 1965. This encounter was to become formative for his own work, both in terms of the pictorial inventions of the following decades as well as for his stubborn artistic self-conception. His resolute insistence on traditional printmaking techniques, already considered obsolete in the 1960s, makes sense on the background of this creative reference. September 2018 9783903172241 | £35.00 Paperback | 232 pp | 240 x 305 mm 150 colour ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Germany, Austria & Switzerland

Before Franz West became an internationally renowned artist—and his immense work an object of desire for collectors, gallerists, and museums—he had worked on developing his materials, techniques, and motifs—in highly precarious economic conditions and largely unnoticed by the Vienna art scene of the 1960s and ’70s. This book, presenting an important collection of unpublished early works, offers an unprecedented look at the genesis of West’s oeuvre, his exploration of Beuys, Freud, and Wittgenstein, his obsession with pornography and garish pop culture, the use of his “private” rule-defying handwriting as a visual element, his disgust with latent Austrian everyday fascism, and his conflicts with the laws of the land and art’s self-declared authorities. In his later works, West, who provoked many ruptures and shifts during his career—which ultimately erupted into fame—elaborated many formal and conceptual decisions of his early works. Published on the occasion of two major Franz West exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou and Tate Modern.

JOHN RULE Autumn 2018

Helmut Lang´s sculptures and objects oscillate between figuration and abstraction. They borrow from some forms of classical sculpture (wall reliefs, freestanding sculptures) and ritual objects (idols), which he deconstructs, abstracts and transforms during his artistic work process. Essentially, this is achieved via the radical reduction of form and colour, through decontextualisation, which is based on the variable integration of objects and sculptures into superordinately installative space design, and by the use of predominantly readily available materials such as scrap metal, fabric or industrial waste. Lang´s dealings with material allows for contextualisations with Vienna Actionism, in which material collages and structural studies of a wide variety of materials play an essential role according to the equation “matter = colour“. Everything is material and is treated equally, whether it is mud, scrap, food, blood or, as a further consequence, the body.

In spite of his short career of just fifteen years, Raymond Duchamp known as Duchamp-Villon (Damville, 1876- Cannes, 1918) is a major figure in the sculpture of the 20th century, an essential link between tradition of Rodin and the modernism of the futurists and cubists. A sculptor, doctor, architect, man of letters, he was at the heart of the artistic and intellectual exchanges of his time. He was one of the figures of the avant-garde who met at Puteaux under the name “Groupe de la Section d’Or“, which comprised, amongst others, his brothers Marcel Duchamp and Jacques Villon, Guillaume Apollinaire, Francis Picabia and Fernand Léger. Having enlisted voluntarily at the start of the First World War, he died of his wounds in 1918 at the age of 41. He left behind him a body of work, of no more than hundred pieces, but they opened the way for modern sculpture. This catalogue raisonné is equally an art book, containing photographs of the period and previously-unpublished extracts from his correspondence.

Cédrix Crespel’s work is part of a tradition and a relationship to art in which different names and approaches resonate. With the canvas in mind, the artist continuously questions himself, applies nuances, then destroys and reconstructs the whole process over and over again. The brush, as an instrument, develops a personal language and puts contradictions (or perhaps just the eclectic sensations that concern him) into motion. The woman appears in the foreground, as an object of desire. Yet, numerous ideas, symbolisms and researches co-exist beyond this evidence. They are of course plastic, formal, narrative and conceptual, but also existential. The eye might initially succumb to the easy charm of modern pop aesthetic, twitching at the strictly defined voluptuous and flat-tinted contours laced with abundant colours. However, a retrospective journey through Cédrix’s work prompts us to measure the importance of other profound and inexhaustible topics, such as the relationship of the artist with his muse, with the era in which he paints, and with the evolution-identity pair.

Born in China in 1967, the painter and photographer Maxime Zhang chose France as his host country and that of his expression. He was very swiftly inspired by abstraction, as practised by Western painters, even as he intermingled within it the art forms of his ancestors, the artists from the Tang and Song periods, as well as a genuine spirituality. This volume thrusts us into his painting, of a great creative freedom, wherein light prevails and guides the viewer.

The year 1989 was a turning point in Chinese art: it shifted from modernism or avant-gardism to so called “contemporary art.” However, this shift, unlike that in the West after World War Two, wasn’t the logical result of post-modernist theories. Art in China may be influenced by Western art, but it is also severely constrained by the state political system and ideology, as well as a particular historical background; the shift had complex causes, which produced a specific language and artistic forms. This books provide an historical review and analysis of the political and social realities of China since the end of the Cold War, and more specifically after the June 6 suppression of the student movement on Tiananmen Square. It also analyses the global context of the new century and points out some issues that must be faced in the judgment of Chinese contemporary art.

A Paper Woman Dream Series 1-4 Simone Kennedy Simone Kennedy is a British/Australian interdisciplinary artist working in series of 26, adapting this specific number to a broader plan of experimental narratives around the theme of re-imagining the ‘self’ as subject through the complexities of the mother/daughter relationship. Kennedy works with concepts exploring childhood, adolescence, the developing brain, and in particular the symbolic ‘pattern making’ that emerges from an autobiographical narrative. She explores the ‘self’ through re-imagining a symbolic mother figure. The alphabetized library of small uniform books relates important social themes on life, loss and memory, discovering an unfolding ‘mutable’ self. Cumulatively the books extend surreal ‘coded’ narratives that formulate a symbolic language across distinct exhibitions. This book celebrates the second edition of Art Night and its participating artists. Art Night is one of London’s largest contemporary arts festivals. The 2017 edition took place in the East End on the 1st of July from 6pm to 4am. The publication pays tribute to the extraordinary artists’ works which have been specially commissioned for Art Night, and the 60 projects of the Associate Programme brought forward by a wide range of UK-based organisations, while also investigating further into the conceptual framework of the festival. Contemporary art writer and curator Tom Morton has written a fictional narrative based on Art Night’s main programme, while writer and editor Louise Benson provides a diaristic recount of her experience of the night, bringing forward both facts and storytelling. As a playful touch, the publication also features the year reading of the Leo sign, which mirrors the Art Night 2017 trail. The publication is further complimented by a foreword from the Whitechapel Gallery and an afterword from Art Night 2017 curator Fatoş Üstek.

Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694-1774) was the greatest collector of drawings of his time and today is the most celebrated. His collection was dispersed in Paris between 15 November 1775 and 23 January 1776. It comprised almost nine thousand sheets currently dispersed throughout the world, primarily in the Louvre, at Vienne, and in many great collections in other countries. It is to the reconstitution of this collection that Pierre Rosenberg has been occupied for several years. Two volumes appeared in 2011 dedicated to French drawings. The Italian part of the collection Mariette is considerable : in the region of 2600 drawings of which the most significant are by Michelangelo, Léonardo, and Raphaël. The Seventeenth Century, the Carrache in particular, is especially well represented. The book follows the reconstruction of the catalogue of the sale: with all the 2600 drawings reproduced in colour. Each drawing is listed with a note on technique, its provenance, its bibliography and with a commentary. One volume is devoted to tables of concordance, annexes and the indispensable index.

Born and raised in Paris, like all the members of his family, and having stayed at Versailles only on rare occasions, Louis-Philippe never had the intention of installing himself in the palace of Louis XIV, even more so since it had been unoccupied since 1789. But passionate about history, he nevertheless opened a new page in the history of the château, consecrating the monument raised to the glory of the Grand Roi to the history of the whole Nation, and dedicating “à toutes les gloires de la France”. His idea, announced at the end of 1832, became the grand cultural project ofhis reign, left incomplete in 1848. The Château, became the location of a grand display of the national history in images, reuniting the great historical tableaux with portraits of great men. From the reign of Clovis, at the end of the 5th Century, to the beginning of France as a monarchy and a Christian nation up to his own arrival in 1830, which became the dawn of a new era, here are more than thirteen centuries of history which unfold around the walls of Versailles.

JOHN RULE Autumn 2018

Although the attribution of any sculpture to Leonardo is difficult to sustain without any secure points of comparison, the question of the Budapest Horse and Rider’s authorship has aroused a lively discussion: was the small bronze only inspired by Leonardo’s ideas or could it bear the master’s own hand? In the late autumn of 2018, the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest is bringing the small bronze together with a small yet astonishing group of international loans to create a once-in-a-lifetime show. The tightly focused exhibition will be devoted to the Budapest Horse and Rider with ten drawings by Leonardo himself and some sculptural works by his contemporaries influenced by the master’s ideas representing almost four decades while Leonardo reutilized the motif of the rearing horse. The accompanying book will include essays by international scholars who will cover the variety of point of views and the state of recent scholarship on some aspects of the problems the intriguing small bronze raises.

Goddess / Woman Devi Cults and Traditional Female Roles in India Edited by Róbert Válóczi

June 2018 9786155304842 | £50.00 Paperback | 137 pp | 255 x 235 mm 60 col & b/w ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Hungary

The introductory essays in this volume define the two focal points of our investigation: the Hindu Goddess and the Indian woman. Róbert Válóczi’s essay places the Devi within the Hindu tradition, and examines the traditional female roles in which her various manifestations appear. Gyula Wojtilla, meanwhile, in a study entitled “The Social Status of Women in Early India”, provides an outline of the rich tradition of Sanskrit literature. The sources he explores trace the position of women from the Vedic Era until the Muslim conquest of the eleventh century CE. The second chapter of this volume focuses on the position of women and goddesses in Indic religions. In an essay titled “A Hymn to the Goddess who Killed the Buffalo Demon”, Csaba Dezső takes a seventh-century poem as the basis for his presentation of Durga, one of the most popular goddesses in the Hindu pantheon. The study by Csaba Kiss explains how the role of women and goddesses came to occupy the foreground in Tantric Hinduism.

“I would only believe in a God who knows how to dance… now I’m nimble, now I fly, now I see myself under myself, now a god dances within me.” Frederick Nietzche, Thus Spoke Zarathoustra, 1891 Within the abundant pantheon of the Yoruba deities, Shango is one of the most powerful gods: an incredible force of nature that strikes with lightning and meteorites. At once man, king and force of nature, he is a particularly complex example of the belief system of the Yoruba of Benin and Nigeria, incarnating both energy and balance. Shango’s believers surround themselves with remarkable symbols. The oshe, a double-headed axe, is the most varied of all: during ceremonial dances, it extends the arms and the gestures of those holding it and showcases them with its refined beauty, which is sometimes descriptive and sometimes abstract. It also complements the magnificent altar, which overflows with offerings of food and libations. This book aims to highlight the richness of African heritage and thought, through many different works of art.

When August Sander (1876–1964) opened his photography studio in Cologne in 1910, he commenced taking portraits of his fellow Germans. These images laid the foundation for a project of cyclopedic scope that he would pursue until his death. His photographic typology of the society of his day, arranged by rank, occupation, and social status, ranging from “peasant” to “big-city dwellers” and “the last people,” is today considered a milestone in the history of photography. In 1929 Sander published 60 portraits titled Face of our Time selected from his monumental People of the 20th Century project. Our volume is a compilation of 153 plates, reproduced from vintage prints, of the best-known and most significant portraits of Sander’s unfinished lifework, which was slow in receiving the global recognition it deserves. Sander’s “fanaticism of a truth seeker,” as Alfred Döblin phrased it in his preface to Face of our Time, has since served as a model for generations of photographers.

A sizzling playground for the wealthy, the wild and the wonderful, Palm Springs has long been an artistic muse and second home for Australian artist Kate Ballis. But after photographing its Mars-like deserts, Mid-Century houses, retro pools and luxury vintage cars countless times, it came to appear ordinary through the lens of her camera, and so she sought to re-enchant the city and its surrounding landscapes through some other medium. Converting a digital camera for infrared, thus extending the edge of the visible spectrum exponentially, Ballis’s viewfinder completely changed the way we view Palm Springs, offering a window into a mysterious realm between reality and the surreal. And so, the Infra Realism series was born, growing to include other unique desert-scapes, such as Joshua Tree, Sedona and the Atacama Desert. Comprising more than 100 colour images photographed over the course of several tours, Infra Realism offers a never-before-seen take on some of North and South America’s most iconic destinations in a brilliant combination of technology and magic.

Sundays evolve as we age; our childhood memories are often held dear and as adults, we associate Sunday with Christian worship or the chance to relax and switch off from work and the world. With less than 2% of the population now going to Anglican church on Sunday. What are they doing instead? And how does this reflect the nation’s identity? For the past decade, photographer Matt Writtle has been documenting how people living in England spend their time on this traditional day of rest. He has selected twelve subjects spanning a range of ages, backgrounds and locations, which, he believes, challenge the viewer to question the value of leisure time in a digital and consumerist culture. Matt Writtle is a documentary and portrait photographer from the Black Country, now based in London. Since 1992, he has travelled the world documenting social and humanitarian issues for various publications such as The Times, London Evening Standard, Daily Telegraph, and the New York Times.

The people he photographed are famous, and the portraits he did of them. The name of the photographer, however, is little known so far. Fred Stein was one of the pioneers of the small-format photography of the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Dresden in 1909, the son of a rabbi, he became a stalwart socialist and was forced to leave his home town when the National Socialists came to power. Together with his wife Lilo, he fled to Paris where a wedding gift of a Leica 35mm camera inspired him to a new career. First in Paris and then, after 1941, in his New York exile, Fred Stein on his forays through the city became an “ethnologist of the urban space”, his eye always out for special moments and the poetry of the metropolises. His photographs are characterized by a profound humanity and a subtle sense of humour. This catalogue made in close co-operation with Fred’s son Peter Stein includes an illustrated biography of the artist’s life.

Fifty years after 1968: The student protests seen from the perspective of the Berlin police force. Over the past decade Arwed Messmer has been working with photographic documents from public archives, using them as the visual basis of his artistic work. In the Police Historical Collection in Berlin he examined the holdings of images taken by the police within the scope of their usual documentation during the student protests of the 1960s. These images, which are published here for the first time, show a different view of the historical events than the press images that dominate our visual memory to this day. For this project Arwed Messmer digitized over one thousand black-and-white negatives, editing them in a sequential narrative structure that breaches the boundary between photography and film.

Blind Spots is a study of our perception. It is an investigation of what we see when we see—and what we unconsciously choose not to see. When exposed to a new environment, the one question we instantly ask ourselves is: "Where am I?" But as soon as we know the context of the perceived, we immediate lose interest. Balder Olrik is inspired by Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman’s model for the perceptual systems of the brain. He disrupts our viewing habits, for example by removing context-specific elements from the image to make the familiar unfamiliar and make us look at our environment more consciously. This is the first book on Olrik's photographic work. After an early career as a painter in the 1980s, Olrik became a part of the pioneering community around digital media and the uprising internet in the 1990s. In1998 he stopped his artistic career, solely focusing on his digital projects. In 2014 he started working as an artist again, mainly focusing on photographic media.

Nemes has been shaped by three different cultures: born in Romania, she resided for a time in Iran, and today lives in Germany. Insecurities and fears regarding the other as well as openness and curiosity toward the other distinguish her and her work.

Motorways are architectural megastructures in the landscape, crossing nations, natural or political borders, and making previously remote places accessible to development. Between the Alps and Naples motorways connect highly complex topographies and urban conditions, often retracing antique trade paths and routes taken by northern Romantics on the Grand Tour, searching for arcadian and sublime landscapes. The experience of the sublime in untamed nature became a highlight on the Grand Tour. In those days the journey took days; today we speed through the landscapes via motorways over concrete bridges, ramps, through galleries and tunnels. But with this speed comes a new accelerated and simultaneously calm sublime of concrete motorway megastructures. Sue Barr, Head of Photography at the Architectural Association (AA), London, is a photographer obsessed by concrete and Brutalist architecture. On countless journeys from the Alps to Naples she took the carefully constructed pictures for her first monographic publication and documented the ominious beauty of motorway architecture, within landscapes and urban spaces.

An empty square in a small town: almost devoid of people, and those who are there are either very old or very young. There are no sights to see, only empty storefronts, slow decay, and—if you’re lucky—a touch of morbid charm. It is the kind of place that you only come to by chance, and you are compelled to ask yourself: Who is here when I am not here—and why? According to the Imperial Office of Statistics in 1887, a Kleinstadt has between five and twenty thousand inhabitants. Ute and Werner Mahler chose to investigate the demographic phenomenon of small towns in their fourth collaboration. Starting in 2015 they traveled around Germany in a small car with a large camera and a supply of blackand-white sheet film. Their concise images freeze time and place, capturing the idea of a small town in a kaleidoscope of images from many small cities, ranging from Bad Gandersheim to Lebach and Zörbig.

This is the book on the 2018 Triennial of Photography Hamburg. Every three years since 1999, this large international festival (with ca. 80 exhibitors and over 300 artists) presents an overview of contemporary developments in artistic and documentary photography. The world in the twenty-first century is characterized by constantly accelerating processes of change; mankind is currently undergoing an enormous phase of upheaval. Digitalization, climate change, waves of migration, population explosion, and globalization demand new solutions and ways of thinking. Under the motto “Breaking Point. Searching for Change,” the 7th Triennial of Photography Hamburg takes up this debate. What answers can artists contribute to the discussion? What are the tasks of photography? The works collected in this book as well as the texts by the authors and museum curators have taken up these challenges and reflect on the subject of the “breaking point” in a manner that is highly complex, imaginative, and inspiring.

Since the end of the 18th century, the art of Romanticism has shaped our idea of idyllic and sublime nature. A way of seeing that also shapes contemporary photographic art, which appears to focus ever more on changes of natural and commercial landscapes and examines the effects of industrialization – including agriculture – and urban sprawl. The book brings together works by about 60 artists and builds a synopsis, divided into seven chapters rich in illustrations and text, reveals the great variety of possibilities with which artists approach landscape in the medium of photography: different types of landscapes are presented, such as ideal landscapes and deserted areas, political territories, agricultural landscapes; in addition, formative powers and the potential for abstraction in the photographic image are displayed, allowing landscape to be negotiated as a concept, or even to appear as a digital formation. Including works by Lucinda Devlin, William Eggleston, Jochen Gerz, Beate Gütschow, Dan Holdsworth, Carsten Höller, Roni Horn, Axel Hütte, Peter Keetman, Robert Longo, Thomas Ruff, and Stephen Shore.

On November 13, 2015, from 9:20 p.m., Paris is under attack. An attack that brings it to the centre of world news once again. The catapult into history with 258 minutes of terror and a death toll of 130. 258 minutes, just over four hours, to which we can add a year of reflection and preparation, for a work with different aspects, which comes in the form of a personal diary of the author. Angelo Ferrillo’s aim is not to persistently find traces of the past but to lucidly, and through photographic narration, implement a direct intervention that has to do with memory. In the photographs of 258 Minutes, the author depicts atmospheres in which detachment is almost palpable, his attitude appears neutral and, at the same time, it is possible to perceive the immersion he makes in a reality unexpectedly full of symbols of obvious normality. There is no trace of spectacle, there is no emphasis on possible moments of commemoration.

(R)existences is a collection of stories told slowly and, in a whisper, of men and women who fight every day to reclaim their existence and who struggle in a society in a world of consumption and exploitation of man by man and of nature by man. The book tells about experiences of resistance and fight through nine different countries situated in three continents, a global work made over thirty years of travels. But what does it mean to resist, today? It means to unite people (not only virtually), to walk together and to create a common feeling and to build it up, step by step, and not only to say “NO”, as mass movements in Europe are often are accused of. To resist, today, means building pockets of territory or population where market mechanisms are left out, where people fight for something that is a common good or simply propose a perspective and a way out from this development model.

Photographs by Stefano Schirato

October 2018 9788885608146 | £35.00 Hardcover | 160pp | 270 x 205 mm 80 b/w photos Rights: Worldwide exc. Italy

The book is the most comprehensive photo documentary ever made on the complex situation of the area called Land of Fires, located in Campania, between the provinces of Caserta and Naples, the most polluted of the Italian’s regions because of the million tons of toxic waste illegally disposed on this territory for over thirty years. Drawing on investigations about the “ecomafia” question that, in the 90’s, brought to light the treaty among political local classes, camorra and the masonic lodge “P2”, Terra Mala reveals the territory’s degradation, denouncing the conditions in which children, women and men, are forced to live every day. This land is full of illegal landfills, piles of underground poisons and garbage. Schirato retraces the deterioration of this geographic area. On one hand it documents the land's deterioration; while, on the other hand, shows the courage of its people who chose to resist and fight for their homeland and a better life.

Isole d’Inverno (Winter Islands) Photographs by Federica Di Giovanni Introductory text by Erri de Luca

September 2018 9788885608290 | £35.00 Paperback | 96pp | 240 x 210 mm 50 colour ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Italy

The author travelled to Capraia, Lampedusa, Linosa, Pantelleria, Procida, San Pietro, Giglio, Eolie, Egadi, Pontine and Tremiti islands. Marettimo, Levanto, Tremiti Islands to tell the stories of these smaller Italian islands; because winter strips these lands of their stereotype of summer paradise and shows a different kind of beauty, made of tales and everyday gestures. What she had in mind is a map of something near that remains far, a survey on the islander condition. And this condition stands out in the winter season. The stormy sea preventing the ferry from leaving, the tank carrying water to distant cliffs, the men fishing for squids and hunting migratory birds, the only open café on the island, are all little allegories. Every island has its own story which is, in some ways, the same story of any other island.

Three colored balls, connected together by a stick, become the best known Japanese dessert called Dango. “Hana yori Dango”. This is a Japanese saying, literally ranslated as, “Dango rather than flowers”. The expression is used to describe people that attend hanami, the custom of enjoying the beauty of flowers, especially during the season of Sakura, cherry blossoms. However, they often seem to be more interested in eating or drinking than appreciating the beauty of the flowers. It means that the practical is preferred over the aesthetic. Dango  is the Juror,s Pick winner at LensCulture Street Photography Awards 2018. Christy Havranek said in the Huffington Post “Alex Liverani has created a striking series of triptychs, each filled with stolen moments captured around Japan. This work is both whimsical and grounded in tone. With clever framing and masterful editing that never feels contrived, each triptych can stand on its own or live within a rich, evocative series. That, to me, is a rarity.”

A Life in Africa 1894-1939 Henri Gaden, Officer & Photographer Text by Roy Dilley

A keen amateur photographer, Gaden was inseparable from his camera during the forty years of his career as a military officer and administrator in Africa. His photographs form a unique pictorial record of everyday life at French colonial and military outposts, and for local communities and peoples. With camera in hand, Gaden knew how to stand witness and capture scenes of life —of women and men—an ambience, an exchange, even a degree of complicity between the administrator and his photographic subject, be it a prestigious defeated figure like Samory Touré or an ordinary encounter in a village, from Chad to the French Soudan, between 1894 and 1939.

Paradise Handbook Handbook on Subversive Strategies of a Film Made in Iran Edited by Andreas Baur

June 2018 9783864422485 | £25.00 Paperback | 174pp | 270 x 205 mm 109 colour ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Germany, Austria, Switzerland & Netherlands.

Paradise Handbook reveals a concise insight into the genesis of the film “Paradise”, which Sina Ataeian Dena managed to realize in Iran over a long period without filming permission and on a very small budget. The resulting footage was brought out of the country and the film premiere was 2015 at Locarno Film Festival. The handbook reveals a fascinating view of how the film crew dealt creatively with the massive restrictions in Iran. It breaks down the logistical, strategic, and technical efforts underlying the images and scenes in that the team applied to circumvent the plethora of restrictions. Created as a documentary feature, the film presents the viewer with seemingly mundane scenes of life. Iranian censorship, especially of feature films, scrupulously regulates everything that could somehow be understood as critique, such as the (absolutely necessary) concealment of female characters; and to show adolescent girls dancing to pop music in a school bus or during school breaks, is completely unimaginable.

JOHN RULE Autumn 2018

Audrey Hepburn was living evidence that fairy tales are real and that angels can come down to earth. Born in Brussels in 1929, she attended ballet schools in Amsterdam and London. It was Colette who discovered her, the too tall and too thin girl with big, expressive eyes, then a complete unknown, and made her the lead in the 1951 Broadway production of Gigi. Her film triumphs were all the more astonishing since she didn’t match the usual Hollywood clichés. Petite, almost androgynous, and with a disarming naturalness, she had a worldwide impact on fashion and beauty trends and was enthusiastically welcomed as an alternative to the sex bombs and pin-up girls of the 50s. After her triumphant Hollywood career she was appointed special emissary of UNICEF in 1988. She died in 1993. First published in 1993 and now available in a new reprint, this book, assembles the best film stills, portraits, and private photographs by well-known as well as by unknown photographers from all over the world.

Art + Australia ART

Edited by Edward Colless In December 2015, through an extraordinary gift, Eleonora Triguboff presented Art + Australia to the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) at the University of Melbourne, where it is now based under the stewardship of editor-in-chief Professor Su Baker. Now under the editorship of Edward Colless, the new look Art + Australia comprises a nod to the journal’s history but also proposes a new direction. In its new environment, Art + Australia has been refigured as a publishing project with ancillary public outcomes, changing its direction from marketoriented to focus on more speculative writing about art and its contemporary or future theoretical, social or geo-political situations. Now living intimately with the vibrant pulse of its art school host, Art + Australia presents a rigorous and uncompromising perspective on what might constitute both art and Australia in the twenty first century.

ISBN 9780995392595

May 2017 Issue Zero considers the present status of Australian art practice and arts writing through the lens of the very first issue of Art and Australia in 1963 with contributions by Brook Andrew, Rex Butler, Julie Ewington, Doug Hall, David Hansen, Biljana Jancic, Darren Jorgensen, Victoria Lynn, Adrian Martin, Jarrod Rawlins, Daniel Thomas

Issue One (53.2): Extraterritoriality ISBN 9780995392519

May 2017 Extraterritoriality is a term that is usually applied to the unusual legal status of embassy grounds – a sovereign piece of one nation embedded within another – but it also has much wider usage politically and socially, and may refer to sanctuary and asylum as well as zones of exclusion and infamous ‘black sites’ of imprisonment. In this issue, twelve contributors offer lively and innovative responses to the current border protection polemic, exploring extraterritoriality as a contemporary artistic and cultural strategy.

Issue Two (54.1): The Plague ISBN 9780995392533

October 2017

Bi-annual publication (May and October) ISSN 0004301X | £12.50 Softcover |128 pages | 215 x 138mm Approx. 50 colour, 50 b/w ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Australia & New Zealand

This issue of Art + Australia extrapolates contemporary and historically-inflected notions of the plague. Within this metaphor, a number of doom-laden scenarios are clustered: not only pestilence—by whatever contagious agent and through whatever toxic medium: disease, data cloud or drone—but also collapse, crash and extinction. These ideas are examined through various cultural moments and artistic practices

Issue Three (54.2): Unnaturalism ISBN 9780995392540

May 2018 Does Nature still exist? Did it not, at some moment within Modernism, die as God did? Is it, in the era now dubbed the Anthropocene, in ruins? Or has it perhaps returned, strangely resurrected and crawling from the charnel ground of the earth, like a zombie?

August 2018 9780995392526 | £27.50 Hardcover | 187 pp | 277 x 220mm 100 col & b/w ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Australia & New Zealand

This book is made up of a series of poetic texts by Brian Castro and artworks by John Young, which both engage their shared histories of Macau. Macau has undergone a fundamental metamorphosis over the course of half a millennium. Beginning as a merchant port of refuge and fisherman’s haven, becoming a gateway for the Jesuit missionaries, and then in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries a Portuguese province; where poets and artists from the west and China traversed, and transformed their own orientation in becoming transcultural individuals. Now Macau is defined as a phantasmagoric site for gambling rivalling Las Vegas. Castro’s text, titled Macau Days: Or Six Characters in Search of a Dish, is structured like a meal and traditional Macanese recipes accompany his texts . Young’s artworks—paintings, chalk drawings and montages as well as stunning photographs of the Macanese dishes— are dispersed throughout the texts. This book is an exciting, unique and significant cultural object.

August 2018 9780995392502 | £22.50 Hardcover | 104 pp | 215 x 138mm 75 b/w ills Rights: Worldwide exc. Australia & New Zealand

1973. The Mildura Sculpture Triennial was showcasing new experimental art in Australia, dubbed ‘earthworks’ or ‘sitespecific art’. But at dawn on the first day a frontend loader ploughed up and destroyed the most provocative installation in the show—Minefield by controversial Australian artist Tim Burns—in the interests of public safety. By mid-morning all that was left of a work that had occupied around 400 square metres of ground was furrowed scars. What had been so dangerous? Tim Burns rose to notoriety in the early 1970s with a series of (literally) explosive art actions, before decamping to New York, where he remained, on and off until the mid-1990s. He now resides in Western Australia. Rather than identifying as a painter, filmmaker, karaoke videographer, installation artist, theatre director or performer (although he has done all these and more), Burns calls himself ‘a context artist’ . This collection of essays traverses a legendary work of Australian sculpture that was scandalous, formidable yet elusive, indeed feral, and—with almost no evidence of it remaining—damned.
