Walter E.Spradbery is best known for the classic posters he produced for London Transport, British Rail and LNER in the interwars years. He worked in watercolour and linocut, specialising in landscapes featuring the countryside around London. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. Walter Spradbery was also an official war artist. A pacifist, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War. In this book, the life of Walter Spradbery is revealed mainly through a remarkable correspondence discovered some 35 years after his death: part of a huge quantity of penned correspondence, reputed to have amounted to over one thousand letters, to a lifelong friend, James Berry. The book also features diaries from pre- World War One and later correspondence to a certain Miss Elinor Pugh. All these sources have been assembled by his son John Spradbery who also comments on the material.

“According to the theory of entropy we may presuppose that the condition of disorder we have today in modern life is not a negative symptom…”. These are the words of Jim Supangkat, an authoritative Indonesian critic and curator, in the introduction to this book which investigates the contemporary art scene in his country through the work of ten key artists. Similar to the artistic production of other Asian scenes – China and India especially – Indonesia celebrates chaos as, precisely, a globalised symptom that is not necessarily lacking in expressive possibilities. In fact Supangkat continues: “When chaos reaches its critical point the process of decadence and the conditions of disorder are concluded and a new substance takes shape, with a level of order that is wholly different from what existed previously…”.

“The Chinese painter He Sen was born in the Yunnan province in 1968, at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution.... he began his artistic training in 1989, the year the democratic movement in China was put down. He Sen’s career has therefore been....permeated by transformations which have shaped Chinese society until the present.. Since 1998 the painter has been (almost) exclusively interested in the portrayal of girls and women, pictures which are distinguished by their exact finishing as much as their detailed depiction....[His] paintings show anonymous young women alone with no further description, always placed against an undifferentiated and monochrome background. A few props such as an armchair, table, sofa or bed as well as accessories such as a single bottle of whiskey, a glass, a packet of cigarettes, a mobile telephone serve to locate his models within a space which at most only hints at a room, embellished only by vague shadows or occasionally visible cigarette smoke” (Dirk Steimann).

After Chris Johanson, Ed Templeton and Mike Mills, here is fresh mongraph on another of the Beautiful Losers, Barry McGee, an artist who started out in the 80’s on the streets of San Francisco, signing his works with the tag name TWIST. Welcomed on the international scene as the new Keith Haring and soon becoming a cult figure in street art and graffiti, McGee today is known not only for his technical abilities as a tagger but also because he transformed the practice of street art into a new language bringing together the most disparate energies and materials. In fact his indoor works may include drawings on paper and coloured geometrical patterns, junk and old computer monitors, car parts and sheet metal; surfaces on which the artist intervenes with markers, spray paints, pesticide sprayers and his characteristic series of caricatured faces of people suffering and alienated by urban survival.

Hajime Sorayama was born in 1947 in Japan. After studying at Tokyo’s Chuo Art School he became a freelance illustrator. In 1978 he drew his first robot. Sexy Robot, published by Genko-sha in 1983, made his organic robotic forms famous around the world. Derived in part from pin-up art his chromeplated gynoids appear in suggestive poses, often in latex and leather. This thick tome is a reference catalogue to Sorayama’s rich work including a lot of new illustrations. Masterworks sparkles with extraordinary talent, wondrous imagination and impeccable skill. “Sorayama’s surreal and futuristic Dadaist images not only produce incredible sensations in the observer, but also blend into a unique homage to life. With joyful freedom he combines and morphs fear with happiness, pain with pleasure, repulsion with attraction, past with future, flesh with metal, the organic with ethereal.” – Thierry Mugler

The Liverpool Biennial International Festival of Contemporary Art is the largest and one of the most exciting contemporary visual arts events in the UK. It was founded by James Moores (with Jane Rankin Read, Lewis Biggs and Bryan Biggs) in 1998. The 6th Liverpool Biennial will be entitled Touched. Touched presents affective art – art that moves us in mind, body and soul – and so becomes a sketch map of the affections: passion, rage, lust, pleasure, fear and joy. The Biennial will have several indoor and outdoor venues in Liverpool and, in consideration of the fact that some projects are conceived by the artists so that they will grow and change over the ten week duration, the catalogue will be published after the Biennial closes. The curatorial team will include: Lorenzo Fusi, Peter Gorschlüter, Patrick Henry, Sara-Jayne Parsons, Mike Stubbs and Mark Waugh.

This large format, elegant book documents the complete works of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610). Caravaggio and his works have been in the past years the object of a sort of collective infatuation that on one side brought the value of the master’s paintings to very high levels and, on the other, generated a proliferation of new attributions, with a subsequent uncertainty and confusion among Caravaggio lovers. This book, published on the fourth centenary of Caravaggio’s death, is based on the analysis of the artistic production which is confirmed as Caravaggio’s, taking into account recent research. The author tells the artist’s life, characterized by light and shadow, by marvel and scandal, presenting a vivid profile of Caravaggio as a man, as well as his ability to innovate in painting through creativity and technique. Rossella Vodret is an expert of the early 17th century painting, and specifically Caravaggio and his followers; she has been curator of many exhibitions in Italy and abroad including the major Caravaggio exhibition held in Rome at Scuderie del Quirinale in 2010.

Manifesta, the roving European Biennial of Contemporary art, changes its location every two years. Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography. This includes innovations in curatorial practices, exhibition models and education. Each Manifesta biennial aims to investigate and reflect on emerging developments in contemporary art, set within a European context. In doing so, it presents local, national and international audiences with new aspects and forms of artistic expression. The European cities or regions hosting successive editions of Manifesta have been selected by the Manifesta Board and its Director, according to a sequence of flexible criteria, including social, political and geographical factors. New hosts are appointed after up to three years of careful study, following a solid process of consultation, site visits and research. Each Manifesta edition is mutually organized by the Manifesta Foundation and diverse local bodies, creating a new model of synergy for each consecutive biennial. Opening on October 9, 2010, and continuing through the autumn in the Region of Murcia (Spain) in dialogue with Northern Africa, Manifesta 8 will explore the idea of Europe in the 21st century, focussing on the boundaries of the continent, and thus strengthening its international and intercontinental character. More specifically, the aim of Manifesta 8 will be to engage with Europe’s present-day frontiers and its interrelation with the Maghreb region. In line with Manifesta’s aim to experiment with innovative curatorial models and methodologies, the curatorship is not by one individual art professional, but by three cooperating groups: Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum, the Chamber of Public Secrets and Tranzit.org. AUG 2010

Since the early 1980s, Thomas Schütte – three times a participant in Documenta in Kassel, winner of the 2010 Düsseldorf Art Prize, and the Golden Lion as best individual artist at the 2005 Venice Biennale – has worked on architectural models, scenes, and figurative scenarios. The interplay between the small and the large, between the model and its realisation, and between the notions of art as a model and the model as art, are recurring themes throughout Thomas Schütte’s oeuvre. So he both instigated the publication of this voluminous book about the show in Bonn and laid down its specific detail. In this way, there is scarcely a single group of works missing from this chronological survey of the past thirty years, in terms of a model or an installation. The model itself is not just the nucleus of a fantastical oeuvre, but takes on a more seismographic function, and rediscovers the architectural arts on behalf of fine art.

It has always been apparent that Kiecol’s artistic concern is different from the minimalist ideas of an earlier generation. For Carl Andre or Donald Judd, on no account was it a symbol for anything else or even possibly an image for something else. Kiecol’s work, by contrast, is rich in association, and yet it is also evident that the emotional labour of association, the investigation of the archetypical, is left to the viewer. How can one still create meaning with the most minimal forms? Kiecol’s work revolves around questions of this kind. Reviewing many years of artistic practice, it becomes evident that there is such a thing as the ethic of production. There are themes, preferences for particular materials. Variations only exist until such time as artistic “problems” have been resolved. Interests change tack, but the work itself abides as an extremely reduced network of signs that presents us with the creation of space and image.

This catalogue documents the first museum-based solo exhibition in Germany by the New York artist Javier Téllez. Téllez, whose work oscillates between fiction and documentation, reinterprets classic material from the stage and screen, and deconstructs accustomed socio-cultural boundaries. Alongside installations by the artist, the catalogue also includes some of Téllez’s most important films including La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, Twelve and a Marionette, Oedipus Marshal and Letter on the Blind for the Use of Those Who See. In Téllez’s most recent film, Caligari and the Sleepwalker (2008), based on the 1919 Expressionist silent film, Dr. Caligari carries out a kind of therapeutic conversation with Cesare, who has been in a somnambulist state for years and can only communicate by means of slabs of slate. By selecting the Einstein Tower in Potsdam as the location for the film, he also points to an epoch of art and film history in which pathological disturbances were addressed for the first time.

Jochen Schmith comprises Carola Wagenplast, Peter Hoppe, and Peter Steckroth. They have been working together as an artist collective since 2000, under the pseudonym Jochen Schmith. The starting point for the exhibition book was an interest in the classical villa and its original use. However, what seems at first glance to be site-specific, assumes an extended sense of global significance upon closer inspection, after walking through the rooms and viewing the cabinets of the Kunstverein, in accordance with the route directed by Jochen Schmith. What at first seem like historical references, turn into reflections upon current phenomena as one goes through the book. The installations and interventions are delicate and reserved yet at all times rich with diverse connotations. In short, an exhibition and a book that links and combines heterogeneous thematic strands to create a multifaceted analysis.

This exhibition and accompanying book take their inspiration from to the legendary short film Powers of Ten (1977) by Charles and Ray Eames. The film demonstrates the scales introduced by twentieth century sciences (a total of forty powers of ten, ascending in sequence to 1024, then descending all the way to 10-16 metres), and those with which our universe can be described in terms of the factors of time and space. Forty-two separate camera positions record the spectrum, ranging from the macrocosm (solar system) to the microcosm (inside of a hand). Narrated here, in several loosely connected and yet independent chapters (world and cosmos, faith and myth, nature and man, urban environment, and existence and finiteness), is a veritable history of our worlds – the external world which surrounds us, and the internal world which resides in us, with all its components: world molecules.

What exactly is Chinese about Chinese contemporary art? An exciting dualism sums up the matter: on the one hand, a reference to a cultural tradition in China that is thousands of years old, and on the other the natural turn to a form of expression from Western modernism. The ornamental elements, the element of drawing, the meditative concentration and contemplation, and the resultant sublime power of simplicity are qualities shared by the works of Shen Fan, Ding Yi, and their teacher Yu Youhan. Yu Youhan was shaped by the Cultural Revolution, and had to pursue his studies of objectless art in secret under the most difficult living conditions, for his goal was to free art in China from the propagandistic style of socialist realism. He pushed the door wide open for his students Ding Yi and Shen Fan. These artists reflect in their work the dramatic changes in Chinese society since the end of the 1980.and the transformation of Chinese culture.

Only during the past decade has a wider audience started to take notice of the great Danish artist Poul Gernes, who was born in 1925 and died in 1996. Poul Gernes’ work is ubiquitous in Denmark, and is simply impossible to overlook on account of the 150 artistic designs of interiors and exteriors, situated around the country. This artist, who co-founded the Eks-Skolen in 1960, was always generally hostile, towards the art market, preferring to see his works in a more public dialogue than in a gallery. Thus, his work is heavily influenced by forerunners from art history such as Cézanne, Johns and McCracken, yet conversely, his 122 x 122 cm “target paintings”, and the striped paintings, flags and sculptures can be found in a transmuted form in the work of younger fellow artists. This large retrospective show and extensive catalogue make the work of this extremely independent modernizer accessible to a wider audience and trace the diversity of his influence.

The way in which the stories about a certain Mr. Donald Duck from Ducksburg happened to spread around the world is surely to be regarded as an international phenomenon. It seems indisputable today, and that is confirmed by Andreas Platthaus’ informative FAZnet blog from 8th April 2010 that we in Germany owe the names of this ingenious figure’s nephews to the German translator of the comic series, Erica Fuchs. She was the one who, in 1951, rejected the Danish term for a piggy bank Rip, Rap and Rup – as had been the case in Iceland where our nephews were called Ripp, Rapp and Rupp – as names for the most diminutive members of the Duck family. However, there are many other worlds, and Sarah Ortmeyer points out this simple truth in her ingenious book. A small taster: Knatte, Fnatte, Tjatte (Sweden), Kwik, Kwek, Kwak (The Netherlands), Bulik, Dulik, Kulik (Czech).

Breaking Forecast is an answer to the persistent question: who are the next generation of artists in China. Breaking Forecast gathers eight key young figures under 40 years old who are already rocketing towards the international art scene and who compose the new face of contemporary art in China: Cao Fei, Chu Yun, Liu Wei, MadeIn, Qiu Zhijie, Sun Yuan & Peng Yu, Yang Fudong and Zheng Guogu. Breaking Forecast speaks about what is the history of the present. It is talking about what is going on now in China, the weather report of a precise moment in time. Rather than making an exhaustive list, Breaking Forecast focuses on artists who are already influential for their generation. It is neither a thematic nor a scientific exhibition, but a survey of different attitudes, different vocabularies. Breaking Forecast is a group exhibition of solo shows. It gathers a consistent body of work by each artist enabling a full expression of their singular attitudes and artistic vocabulary.

This catalogue surveys the artworks of Feng Zhengjie made in 2008-2009. There are portrait painting series, floating floras painting series and new sculptures. The signature paintings of Feng Zhengjie - huge, flat close-ups of smooth-skinned and flawlessly-coiffed young women, rendered in unearthly shades of green and pink- are one of the guilty pleasures of contemporary Chinese art. Skeptics will claim to intellectually disdain these high-fashion images, yet almost no one can resist looking at them. The compositional forms are at once so sweeping and strong, the facial features so alluring, the eyes so intensely fixed, that resistance seems futile. Feng Zhengjie was born in Sichuan Province in 1968 and educated at the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts from 1988- 1995. He appeared in the group show, The Revolution Continues: New Art From China, at Saatchi Gallery, London in 2008.

Born in Beijing in 1974… his brilliant father’s professional advancement was hampered by a sullied family background, a twist of fate that perhaps led to Ouyang’s vantage point: perpetually locked just outside the inner circle. His family’s Xi’an exile further ingrained his outsider psychology; still today he is the only successful post-70s artist who has not graduated from the oil painting department of a prestigious arts academy. He abandoned middle school, ran away from home ...Exposed too young to a grisly world, he retreated into paint and canvas, and discovered that painting was his true calling; eventually he thrust himself into art school. Here, fueled by ...the need to redress the complex world and its underbelly he began to paint with an impermeable devotion” - Lee Ambrozy

The 365 images accompanied with 365 news reports chronicle daily moments of China in a randomly selected year 2006. China 2006 is a completely personal text offered by the artist. What he cares about is the everyday Chinese reality. If there is any seemingly incredible anecdote, it would be the “surreality” of the era itself. This book presents a pictorial answer to the question of ‘what is China now’ . The Chinese scholar Wang Min’an and the curator Zuo Jing both give a holistic analysis of the artist’s ingenious and sarcastic play of painting language, in the context of the history of Chinese painting since the early 20th century and the progress of modernity in the country as represented in the artist’s work. The catalog shows how Wang Yin utilizes the political grammar of painting to pry open the hard skin of reality in an attempt to unveil the tension between the presence of collectivism and absence of individuality.

When Madonna’s Like a Virgin came out in 1984, it wasn’t just the songs that made a splash, it was her look. That crucifix jewelry! Those earrings! Those black rubber bracelets! The accessories that gave Madonna her stylistic edge and sparked millions of prepubescent copycats across the globe were the brainchild of Maripol, a designer and stylist who was working at the time as the art director of the Fiorucci store. Now Maripol, who has just launched a new line of colorful, affordable accessories for Marc Jacobs, opens up her scrapbooks of drawings, designs, photography and writing to create a book that captures her personality as an artist, beginning with her childhood and her arrival in New York as a 19-year-old art school student in 1976, where she became a part of the New York clubbing scene, and worked on films such as Downtown 81 (starring Jean-Michel Basquiat and Deborah Harry). In the mid-1980s, she opened her own boutique, Maripolitan, in the NoHo area of New York. Maripol has also been art director on music videos for Cher, D’Angelo and Elton John, among others.

The Stocking Book explores the astonishing variety of stockings from the eighteenth century to the present, the way great painters made use of them, the way illustrators and cartoonists made use of them, the way advertisements depicted them, and the way the shape has developed, from the windsock in an airfield to the geography of Italy, to the stocking hung from the mantlepiece waiting for Santa Claus. Ranging from the shapeless utilitarian woollen stocking suddenly transformed by being black or allowed to droop erotically down the leg, to the breathtaking sheen of silk stockings drawn tight over the leg, held in place by an elaborate garter or garter-belt, silk being replaced in recent years by nylon or rayon, enlivened in certain decades by a central seam in the back of the leg, a tiny monogram or a variety of colours in the sheer quality of the transparent material, listed in deniers.

A homage to Parisian frivolity, wit and satire from the early twentieth century as revealed in the pages of one of the most successful magazines of the period A saucy, light-hearted look at life in Paris before the Great War when life was enjoyed to the full and the pursuit of the grisette, actress and artists’ model was high on the list of male preoccupations. La Vie Parisienne was a very popular journal which attempted a fresh mix of humorous cartoons, short stories, up-to-the-minute gossip about prominent persons; columns of aphorisms on such subjects as marriage or love; fashionorientated, sophisticated banter set out as pages of dialogue; and acid comments about all and sundry, music, art, theatre, the races, sports, and the stock exchange. Somewhat surprisingly, the mixture took. Founded in 1863, Parisians bought it in sufficient numbers week after week to ensure its survival for over a century.

The Arab world is famous for its calligraphy, miniatures, woodwork, ceramics and silver. However, so far little has been said about another important aspect of Arab culture: the art of embroidery. For centuries, embroidered cloth has been used to decorate private houses and public buildings and to dress men, women and children. Embroidery played an important part in both social and cultural lives of people and reflected economic and political change. This is the first time that a book has been dedicated to the various types of embroidery from the Arab world. The book presents numerous examples of embroidery from Arab countries and shows some of the various ways in which techniques, colours and motifs were and still are used to embellish textiles. It will be a source of knowledge and inspiration for anyone with an interest in textiles and dress and for those who are curious about a relatively unknown aspect of Arabic art. Published in cooperation with the Textile Research Centre, Leiden.

A sort of Fruits of China’s best dressed kids, this volume defines the new Chinese cool through the eyes of its hippest generation, in 300 pages of photos and illustrations from the ultracool Beijingbased magazine +0086. The first generation to enjoy the economic accelerations—the foremost of the so-called “Tiger Economies”--of the past ten years, China’s youth culture is media-savvy and globalized, their eyes beaming in the glow of perhaps becoming the next Internet It Girl or Cory Kennedy. These kids may watch Skins and Gossip Girl, but, as the book demonstrates, they aren’t blindly miming some bland digest of global pop culture, rather, they are developing a new style that is specific to contemporary China, which is taking root by itself. This publication marks the beginning of a documentary work in progress, as +0086 continues to report on the situation from the streets of Beijing. Though this book can’t tell the future, it does predict that Chinese youth will just keep getting cooler.

The setup is classic and familiar: a table draped with a white cloth, a dish of fruit, a sugar bowl. Yet instead of the meal awaiting an unseen viewer’s consumption, as in a classic still life, Laura Letinsky photographs what remains on the table after the food has been eaten, leaving only crumbs, melon rinds, a cantaloupe pocked with rot and a half-finished lollipop. Letinsky explores the inextricable relationship between ripeness and decay, delicacy and clumsiness, waste and plenitude, pleasure and sustenance. The influence of DutchFlemish and Italian still-life paintings--whose exacting beauty documented shifting social attitudes resulting from exploration, colonization, economics and ideas about seeing as a kind of truth--can be seen here as well. In After All, Letinsky explores photography’s transformative quality, changing what is typically overlooked into something splendid in its resilience. Poet Mark Strand contributes an essay to this marvelous volume!

In 2001, Walead Beshty began documenting the Diplomatic Mission of the Republic of Iraq to the former German Democratic Republic in Berlin. Still protected as sovereign territory under the Vienna Conventions, the embassy has stood abandoned since the early 1990’s as, in Beshty’s words, “a relic of two bygone regimes, unclaimable by any nation; a physical location marooned (by) symbolic shifts in global politics, a ruin set apart neither by fences nor by millennia, but by the invisible and abstract mechanisms of international law”. Selected Correspondences focuses on three bodies of photographic work – two that deal with the Embassy directly and a third, “Transparencies”, which continues the question of place and movement. The work has been exhibited at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, Tate Britain, London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, among others, and is brought together here for the first time, accompanied by two new essays on the projects.

Israel is so much more than a pilgrimage destination for religious holiday groups. It has fabulous beaches, breathtaking landscapes and an amazing nightlife. The diversity of its people with their effect on culture and cuisine are second to none, and also on the flip side, those cultural differences make it a place with enormous difficulties. Kiki Streitberger is a London-based photographer. She spent most of 2009 in Israel, travelling by train, bus, car, motorbike, taxi and on foot to every corner of the country. She climbed Massada at the crack of dawn, swam in the Dead Sea, crossed checkpoints, nearly lost her camera on several occasions, and met countless wonderful people. She got to know a place where the traces of an ancient history are omnipresent within a country that is continuously reinventing itself. In its landscapes as well as its cultures, Israel‘s versatility is second to none. A selection of photos taken during that time have been put together in this book, with the intention of giving the reader an insight into this unique land of opposites.

Edward Weston began his in California, moving to Mexico from 1923 until 1926, where he met the artists of the so called Mexican Renaissance and developed a new artistic path. In 1923 he established the “Group f/64”, together with other artists, including Ansel Adams. He died in 1958. Brett started working with his father in Mexico surrounded by the greatest revolutionary artists, Tina Modotti, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, developing throughout the years a photographic style more and more oriented towards abstraction. He died in 1993. “Dune” connects father and son in a series of unique shots, carrying the spectator away in a world made of abstraction, lights and shadows, informal spaces and shapes.

In 89/90 the Berlin wall is back or better: we are invited to see what is left of or near the old wall and was left by the new Berlin. Some of Schmidt’s scenes look like photographs of excavations. These are quite abrupt plans: single objects or mere traces catch the viewer’s eye with a brutality or a defenselessness, as in a rendering of an act of protest. But all things stand mute. Just as in his exhibitions and books in 89/90 Schmidt has done away with any direct explanations and identifying captions. As such, Schmidt gets to question the status of the historical monument or document even more poignantly. The photographic oeuvre of Schmidt is an investigation of the question in what state Germany has been, is, and will be. His pictures are unmistakably “Deutschlandbilder”, in the tradition of August Sander, Bernd and Hilla Becher, and Hans-Peter Feldmann.

Fashion Magazine is the celebrated annual publication of the historic Magnum Photos agency. The 2010 issue features the work of the Italian Paolo Pellegrin who joined Magnum in 2005. The dichotomy of natural and artificial provides the key to an understanding of the photographer’s work, where images captured in the world of the fashion highlight the contrast between the naturalness of the human body and the artifice of the designers’ creations. The same concept is perceptible on a larger scale on observing the world through Pellegrin’s images. Revealed before our eyes is a constantly evolving landscape in which vast natural scenarios alternate with the completely man-made panoramas of cities and metropolises. Paolo Pellegrin is winner of many awards, including eight World Press Photo and numerous Photographer of the Year Awards. He lives in New York and Rome.

The essence of Japanese eroticism, traditionally handed down in Shunga prints, is vigorously revived in Araki’s photographs, where not only the female nudes that made him famous but also the highly colourful objects and flowers seem to take on carnal qualities. If the enormous billboards in Beijing speak of happy shiny family life, these photographs are about solitude and loss. The seahorse is a symbol of grace and faith and due to the nature of its own virtues endures as a perilous species. This makes it a perfect metaphor for this series. The photo’s of high rise blocks are devoid of human presence. Women, glorified and idolized in commercial photography that is abundant in Beijing’s streets and highways, are a mere mirage in Tanis’ works. A commemorative book, in which French photographer, Bessard was commissioned by the Wuhan Boiler Company to document both the workers and the facility as the production operation was being relocated. The new plant was built in order to reduce pollutive emissions and improve efficiency. The old plant was a catacomb of offices and huge and well-used work spaces. According to Bessard “We’ve seen so much work on Chinese factories and their workers where the western conscience wants to portray the subject as alien. What is the point of adding yet another page to a story that has been written so many times before? “ But after visiting the site “ I was immediately taken aback by a setting of cinematic grander. A rigorous geometric composition traced by immense beams, tentaclelike piping and shafts of light pouring through high perched windows.”

This book features the artworks of four important contemporary photographers from China: Gao Lei, Shi Guorui, Yang Fudong and Zhuang Hui. “The four artists brought together in this exhibition can be said to be representatives of this current. Although they differ in style and technique, they all take reality as progenitor of their inspiration; all of them employ a visual language coming out of the documentary nature of photography; but the concepts in their work are also a reflection of a powerful and self-conscious contemporary subjectivity. It has been these particular features that lead us to title this exhibition Re-imagining the Real – thinking and feeling at the very forefront of Chinese photography, they are using a new imagination to make a fresh engagement with the world”. - Wu Hung.

Elio Ciol was born in 1929 in Casarsa della Delizia, Italy. They are images that talk about a suspension of time, like an antidote for a contemporary civilization. For this reason, Frank Dituri images are not just the fruits of research in the grand tradition of the history of photography, but represent a genuine ethical glimpse, a suggestion at comprehending the limits of our existence. A camera as both travelling companion and a note book of sensations and apparitions, transferred and transformed into pictures with the aid of the computer. The images are not intended to describe, but to suggest sensations. To make into a book images collected while wandering through cities and places in Europe and Italy is really nothing less than an attempt to transfer onto a page what the author has framed, captured and processed, extrapolating from reality the emotions and sensations an image has transmitted to him. To the question “What does Australia mean to you?” Mario Vidor says: Australia is endless land, the scent of frangipane flowers, driving rain in tropical forests and the majesty of an arid uncontaminated desert. Australia is immaculate skyscrapers, cosmopolitan cities, clashes of cultures and flavours and their amalgamation. Australia is also leaping kangaroos, snoozing koalas and a solitary crocodile lazily opening its jaws. A combination of a thousand things framed by a sublime endless sky. Born in 1948 in Farra di Soligo, Italy he has organised many personal exhibitions in the main Italian cities and abroad in Beijing, New York and Vancouver. His works shows a fascination with contemporary landscapes and in the balance and harmony of the human body.

In something as complex as the built environment, how do you design and engineer the right outcome? Is there a way to account for all the factors impinging on the final product and guide the creative process to where it needs to go? The authors, Anton Germishuizen and J. Rossi, believe there is. The two are part of a team at Burt Hill responsible for developing and applying 10 critical, interconnected drivers, or metrics, that turn the often subjective architecture and engineering process into an analytical, measurable one. In 10 Metrics, using projects on which Burt Hill’s metrics approach has been successfully implemented, you’ll learn how this evidence-based system came bout and how it’s being used to ensure responsive design and quantifiable value while managing risk.

Cybertecture is about designing the new world by tackling the physical and meta-physical issues of the material and technological worlds. If this equilibrium is achieved, then we have unleashed the greater powers of design, giving us the ability to achieve things beyond the physical, as well as transforming the infinite into a real experience. As a dual design concept, Cybertecture is a broadspectrum design philosophy that can be applied to an infinite number of different types of projects and scenarios. The duality resides in a balance of factors that will empower each and every one of the projects to perform at a level above the conventional project. Cybertecture introduces a new dimension to the mix, instigating either new technological ideas or new spatial strategies to energize a project.

This monograph presents a masterpiece of modern design, showcased in stunning images and photography. Internationally acclaimed architects at Benoy completed the Hong Kong Elements Mall in October of 2007. Central to Benoy’s vision was the intention of creating a “sense of place.” Simon Blore, Executive Director of Benoy, believes that “each project needs to have a unique identity so that it relates to its place, its location. This sense of place was created at Elements by adapting the Chinese Feng Shui principles of the five elements of nature. This concept was then woven through the whole design as a narrative on nature with the external facades and art contributing to the story.” Benoy’s design then enriched the design with a variety of colors and textures, allowing the creation of five different, yet connected retail zones.

Singapore is among the world’s very few great cities blessed with an equally great, historic waterfront. The Fullerton Heritage Precinct, Singapore’s downtown necklace of heritage gems, stretching from Collyer Quay along Raffles Quay to Shenton Way, captures this jewel within a ritzy 21st century setting. ‘Fullerton’ was the name given to this site from the settlement’s earliest days, with the establishment there of the British colonial government’s great Fort Fullerton in 1829, circled by a battery of defensive cannon (hence the name ‘Battery Road’, just across from The Fullerton). The Fort was named after Sir Robert Fullerton, Singapore’s British Governor from 1826 to 1830 in which year he left Singapore and then died in London. Now a new energy informs this most celebrated of Eastern ports, recreating heritage monuments, presenting new views, vistas and visions.

This book is based on a principle on which the major protagonists of design agree: the best projects are not necessarily those passing through the Patent Office and originating in architecture and design agencies and that are created in front of computers in big companies, but, on the contrary, they are often those coming from the simplicity of everyday life thanks to the smart ideas of “common people”, of anonymous designers to whom Bruno Munari dedicated the “Golden Compass award to unknown”. Starting from this premise, Daniele Pario Perra presents in this book the result of a wide survey carried out from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean countries featuring thousands of examples of spontaneous creativity, that are collected in an “applied arts” database.

After six months, raze this city to the ground and leave nothing behind, save a number of landmarks intended to survive and to go on to serve a new purpose. The World’s Fairs, held since 1851, were occurrences such as these, spectacular gestures which briefly held the world’s attention before disappearing. In Paul Greenhalgh’s beautifully illustrated book some forty expositions are dealt with in detail and many more are described. Prostitution, medicine, art and photography are the only professions that permit their practitioners to undress beautiful strangers, but, for prostitutes and doctors, the disadvantages are twofold, they cannot solicit their customers on the street, and the sex part is fraught with danger. Like a horsewhisperer, the successful photographer of women hones his senses and abilities to a point where he can develop an intense and intimate working relationship with his subject. Shooting Sex is the firsthand experience of one of the world’s best known photographers of women, Bob Carlos Clarke, who died in 2006. His writing is witty, informative, and very candid. The text is supported by much of his finest recent work along with some famous classics from the past 30 years, and more personal shots from behind the scenes. In the photographers own words: “The survival of mankind depends upon two things – Food and Sex. Both are notoriously difficult to photograph, but sex is harder”.
