HHHH ‘A professional package at less than professional prices.’ ‘Well constructed based on meticulously considered details with many years of player experience invested in it.’ ‘The first thing that grabbed me about this guitar is how open and mature it sounds for something so new!’
“Beautifully constructed, the quality of the woods used on my signature is superb throughout, as is the finish. The playability, owing to the beautifully crafted neck shape and action, is excellent, as is the balance between the treble and bass. From new, the guitar had a surprising amount of volume and this will no doubt improve further the more the instrument is played. The SM2000RB represents amazing quality for a very modest price tag, which is even more astonishing when one considers the instrument comes with a plush shaped hard case.”

CONTENTS Gear Issue 29 FEATURES 5 Midge Ure — the multi-million selling artist tell us about his new Vintage V100MU Signature guitar. 9 Steve Levine — the Grammy Award winning producer shows us round his studio.
I had a discussion recently with a friend who was complaining that music had been destroyed by the proliferation of TV shows like the X Factor and The Voice, and there would never be another real ‘mega’ band with the longevity of say the Stones, Floyd, U2 or The Arctic Monkeys. Whilst I knew where he was coming from, I was reminded of the old story where the composer Brahms was walking along the beach with a friend, who lamented that all the best melodies and intervals had been used so therefore all the best possible music had already been written. Brahms is said to have replied to this by looking out to sea and saying 'Oh, look...here comes the last wave...’
GEAR 27 Blug AMP1— the German connoisseur of tone unveils this must-have item for every gigging guitarist. 57 Supro — a welcome return from over the pond from the classic amp manufacturer. 7 Joe Brown — a true living legend, we look at the new The Joe Brown Signature ukuleles by Laka.
11 Fret-King — three signature models plus the new Exige series join the Fret-King ranks. 58 The Beano — Britain’s best-loved comic now has its own instrument range.
28 Lewitt — we get the best feedback from the many users of the highly respected Austrian microphone manufacturer.
38 Antoni Violins — improved specifications for the best playing experience.
54 Joe Elliott — the Def Leppard frontman tells us all about his side project Down N Outz. 10 British Lion — Fret-King endorser Dave Hawkins on the road with Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris. 43 The Amorettes — forget girl power, these ladies will explode right in your face.
Whilst the big lights and stages of the current plethora of TV talent shows might seem the quickest and easiest way to make it big , any musician from any discipline will tell you that without the hard work and graft of touring, recording, rehearsing, living in vans and bedsits, getting ripped off and underpaid at dank and seedy venues across the world, its impossible to create the conditions where you can truly grow or learn as a musician. In this issue you will see interviews and features with Joe Brown, Joe Elliott, Midge Ure, John Jorgenson, Thomas Blug - artists who will no doubt have many experiences of the above that shaped them into the person they are today. The only restrictions to a person’s creativity is often themselves - the music industry turns like a wheel and the opportunities are always there for any musician or band with the energy, drive and determination succeed - and bands like The Amorettes, Hannah Ricard and The Relatives and The Treatment certainly have that. They may wear their influences on their sleeve, as did The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Oasis, but the music speaks to the audience.
53 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — fresh from their blockbuster release, the heroes in a half shell will rock your world. 16 Italia — new models from this quirky and feature packed guitar brand. 19 Fluence by Fishman — how these revolutionary pickups really will change the game for guitarists.
Remember the record company executive who told Brian Epstein that ‘guitar bands were dead’?
21 Graph Tech — world-class guitar accessories from the Canadian hardware specialists. 15 Xvive — we talk to electronics genius Howard Davis about this superb range of compact fx pedals.
52 Smoke On The Water — we visit perhaps the last place in the UK where ‘that’ riff isn’t banned!
36 Odyssey — some fantastic new additions to this highly regarded Brass Band and Orchestral range.
56 Fret-King Super-matic — Win an amazing self-tuning guitar and a piece of history too.
We’ve got the usual plethora of artist interviews, behind-the-scenes gossip and sneak peeks at some really cool gear. Plus check out the interviews with Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott, Midge Ure, Grant Nicholas and Steve Levine.

VINTAGE - MIDGE URE SIGNATURE Multi-million selling artist, Midge Ure brings his new Vintage signature guitar to the masses. Since we last spoke to him in GEAR 27 when he discussed his love for the Vintage V100MRPGM and V100GT models, Midge has since collaborated with legendary guitar 'guru' and designer Trev Wilkinson to create the V100MU Midge Ure Signature model. "Most of my days are great and some are just incredible." says Trev. "Having Midge Ure drop by my workshop to work on the finer detail of his signature model was a real highlight.”
Vintage ReIssued Midge Ure Signature V100MU - Gold £409
Featuring a solid mahogany body with a carved top, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard which features Vintage's signature drop shoulder and offset heel for easy upper fret access, the V100MU also has twin WP90SK stacked pickups (these have a slightly hotter output, but can also be dialled down to traditional single coil sounds via the ‘roll control’) and a Wilkinson designed GBR roller bridge with its vintage style vibrato and tailpiece providing rock solid tuning and return-to-zero performance every time thanks to the additional E-Z-Lok machine heads. Having toured the US earlier in 2014 with the reformed Ultravox, Midge gave the guitar its maiden voyage which it passed with flying colours. "I've always been really happy with all my Vintage guitars, but the V100MU is everything I want in a guitar” says Midge “the variety of tones from the Wilkinson W90SK pickups combined with the vari-coil enables me to go from single coil to quasi double coil whilst the roller bridge and 'classic' vibrola is something I've never seen before on a contoured topped guitar. It really is a thing of beauty not just to look at but to play." Priced at just £409 the V100MU is available at your local Vintage dealer. Midge will be hitting the road next year performing his 1995 multi platinum Breathe album to celebrate its anniversary. Midge was also invited to perform at the Ryder Cup 2014 opening ceremony at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, where he performed his Ultravox signature hit 'Vienna' with a live orchestral backing. The iconic hit was part of the incredible night which saw golf, music and arts unite to celebrate the global sporting event returning to Scotland for the first time in 40 years. www.midgeure.com www.jhs.co.uk/vintageelectric

JOE BROWN The ukulele afficionado puts his name to a pair of Laka ukuleles. Multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, Joe Brown MBE has been in the music industry for almost six decades and is respected and admired as a 'musicians musician' by a wide variety of artists. As a session player his early career highlights include playing guitar with Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash and other US stars when they came over to Europe. Joe went on to top the charts with his own records such as ‘Darktown Strutters Ball’ and ‘Wonderful Picture of You’, had The Beatles open shows for him and in a career packed with musical highlights has also presented several national series of the Joe Brown Show on UK TV, two series Rock Show for BBC Radio 2 and still finds time to do around 100 live shows a year in the UK. In the last few years he has regularly sold out almost every venue he plays some two or three nights running. In 2008 he returned to the UK Top 20 with an album which was certified as Gold in March of that year, and has now sold in excess of 120,000 copies in the UK. His 50th Anniversary Concert at The Royal Albert hall, London was a sell out and in 2009 he was awarded the coveted MOJO Music Magazine award for Lifetime achievement. 'The Joe Brown’ Concert and Soprano ukuleles by Laka have been designed in conjunction with the legend himself, well known throughout the industry as a ukulele afficionado, so creating instruments that live up to his exacting standards is no mean feat. However Joe was delighted with the results. "These ukes are fine instruments, with perfect intonation” says Joe, “and I’m happy to lend my name to them." The Concert model (LK-JBC) has a solid mahogany top, with mahogany back and sides, whilst the Soprano (LK- JBS) is all-solid acacia top, back, sides and features maple binding. Both models and feature nato necks, rosewood fingerboards and super-stable Grover machine heads for precise tuning.
The Soprano ukulele is supplied with a deluxe hard case whilst the Concert model comes in attractive hard wearing Laka padded gig bag. By a strange turn of coincidence this isn't Joe's first involvement with John Hornby Skewes & Co Ltd – worldwide trade distributor and owners of the Laka brand – as he was the celebrity asked to cut the ribbon officially opening the old JHS premises in Garforth's Main Street back in 1974!

Steve has of course a number of amplifiers for the many guitarists who visit the studio and has just taken delivery of the newly reintroduced Supro 1264T DualTone. “This is an ideal amplifier for my studio - its got a beautifully warm valve tone, with enough clean headroom (which is great for using with front-end effects units), which nevertheless breaks up into a creamy overdrive when you crank it up - without rattling the studio to bits.” he continues “plus this has a fantastic built in vintage tremolo which I just love!”
Lewitt LCT 940 £1,469
Xvive Mini DI XV13 £45.99
A multi-award winning producer who has worked with Culture Club, the Honeyz, Gary Moore, America, The Beach Boys and many others, Steve Levine has probably the most respected ‘ears’ in the business. BPI Producer Of The Year, Music Week Top Single Producer and a Grammy are amongst the many accolades Steve has garnered over an illustrious career. Now based in Liverpool with his own studio and record company ’Hubris records’, Steve is also a regular contributor to BBC Radio (winning yet another award for his acclaimed radio series ‘The Record Producers’) as well as working closely with the music production and recording classes at Sir Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA). As if thats not enough Steve is also a Director of PRS for music, and member of the MU executive committee, and is also Chairman of the Music Producers Guild. With a schedule like that, we were very lucky to get a chance to visit his recently set up studio, and take a look at some of the gear that Steve uses on a daily basis. “Basically this unit was pretty much as shell when I first got here,” explains Steve “a lot of areas of Liverpool were undergoing regeneration, historically OSB board was used for derelict boarded-up properties but the Baltic creative campus (where I'm based) used OSB as inspiration and regeneration - I decided to use the same boarding for inside the studio , although of course its double skinned with internal soundproofing. I’ve had the ceilings lowered and a suspended floor in the live room. Pretty much its done now with just a couple of minor improvements to be made.” Starting in the live room, Steve took us through a basic mic placement for a kick drum and vocal mic. “I’ve been using the Lewitt DTP640REX kick drum mic and I’ve Supro Dual Tone been delighted with the results. Its unique dual 1624T £899 capsule design allows you to get some fantastic creative sounds that you simply cant get with a standard kick drum mic. We actually used this and the full 7 piece Lewitt kit mic set live at the recent Assembly Point Sessions concert at St Georges Hall with Boy George, Mark King and Natalie McCool and it was fantastic. For studio twitter.com/gearmagazine
Inside the state-of-the-art recording room, a quick investigation reveals an Aladdin’s Cave of vintage and esoteric effects units, synths and modules of all descriptions. “I just love fx pedals and stompboxes” says Steve, “they enable you to get sounds that no amount of modern studio effects processing can achieve.” No wonder then Steve has become a fan of the Xvive pedal range. “These mini pedals are great, but unlike the majority of users I’ve got them to use on my keyboard set ups. The Mini DI provides a fantastic clean boost function, and the cabinet emulation really enhanced the sound of certain bass patches or can send the signal into clipping and also (great for lead) includes a brilliant ground lift essential when working with noisy or vintage keyboards. The Wave Phaser has been a revelation and is ideal for colouring a synth or keyboard line. It's unique feature is the phase cycle can be triggered by the input - so pulsing bass lines for example have a musical phase shift ” He gives us an brief impressive demo of the Wave Phaser on a mono synth tone. Last but not least in this brief look at some of Steve’s favourite toys is the Hughes and Kettner TubeMeister TM5H 5 watt valve head. “Sometimes you just want a great valve amp sound without the hassle of mic placement” explains Steve “as often the band will be listening to a playback and just get an idea for a guitar part. The TM5H’s inbuilt RedBox 5 DI output and power soak is an ideal way of getting a great guitar tone really quickly - and the guitarist can even sit in the control room with me! I also got hold of one of the individual RedBox DI units because they are so versatile great for re ampin' tones or getting isolated guitar parts with full live takes.” Listen out for Steve on BBC Radio 2 & 6 Music, and if you’d like to know any more about him visit his website www.stevelevine.co.uk

FRET-KING OF THE JUNGLE - BRITISH LIONS Dave Hawkins plays Fret-King The first side project for the legendary metal bassist and Iron Maiden founder member Steve Harris, British Lion is five piece outfit whose eponymous debut album was released to great acclaim in 2013, with Kerrang awarding it 4/5 stars and Metal Hammer calling it “a big hearted and ferocious triumph”. Since then the band has travelled around the UK and Europe to packed audiences everywhere, and with this hectic touring schedule guitarist Dave Hawkins was looking for a rock solid guitar that could take anything thrown at it, and yet still looked cool onstage. It was a chance encounter at Lister Guitars in Lowestoft where the owner Pete introduced Dave to the Fret-King guitar range, and in particular the FKV75HBK Black Label Esprit V. “It just felt right straight away” says Dave “and I just knew I had to get my hands on a couple. The humbuckers responded exactly how I wanted them to, and of course the ‘none more black’ finish really works for British Lion” He continues "Straight from the box they were in tune, perfectly set up and ready to rock." says Dave. "Now that speaks volumes!"

Jerry Donahue, already well known for his collaborations with Fret-King has come together with Trev Wilkinson and legendary pickup designer Seymour Duncan to produce a guitar that can go from soaring Fret-King PL blues tones, rich dark midnite Parker jazz tones, ‘woman-tone’, the Lundgren elusive ‘in-between quackFKV93PL Black tone’ and country twang In £799 just the flick of a switch, it's all inc. Fret-King there in spades, thanks to luxury carry bag the signature APTL-3JD pickup. “Working together with Jerry and my Chief Engineer, Kevin Beller, we created a dual pickup circuit that allows the FKV25JDD to capture the classic tones of the two most famous, vintage, single coil guitars in one.” say Seymour Duncan.
Designed in conjunction with Queensryche’s Parker Lundgren, the FKV93PL Exige provides all the versatility needed for playing in one of the worlds biggest metal bands. Three custom double coil HHB 3’s designed by Trev Wilkinson especially for the Exige 'PL' can produce a huge palette of voices via a standard three way toggle switch and Vari-coil which progressively rolls whichever of the pickups is in use, from double coil to single coil, with the ergonomic control layout rounded off by a separate volume control for just the middle pickup.

“Of all the special guitar projects I’ve ever been involved with in my quest for the perfect guitar, the Fret King JDD beats them all – at any price, it’s the best, and the most affordable.” Jerry Donahue
"I used to tour with 3 or 4 guitars, but now I only tour with one because my Exige ‘PL' has the versatility to give me all of the guitar tones that I need.” says Parker. “It combines all of my favourite guitar qualities into one badass axe!” A special, one-off twin neck 12 and 6 string version has also been produced for Parker and features heavily in the Queensryche set. One of the worlds most respected jazz/rock supremos, John Etheridge has worked with the likes of Stephane Grappelli, John Williams, Dizzy Gillespie, Yehudi Menhuin, Nigel Kennedy and of course legendary jazz/rock fusion group The Soft Machine, so its no surprise that John needs a guitar that can offer a wide variety of tones and a huge range of styles

With the advent of midi in the early 80s, Elliott also worked as independent consultant for a wide range of companies, in the areas of musical instrument and amplifier development, recording & sampling technology, software design, and education. It can be safely said that he knows a thing or two about what makes a great guitar, and so when he decided to try out the Fret-King Black Label Elise he had no hesitation in giving it the thumbs-up. "I am totally delighted with this instrument," says Elliott, "It looks, feels and sounds great. The Vari-coil provides a wide range of variations on a tonal theme." In fact so delighted with his new guitar Elliott also got himself a Country Squire Semitone Special in Ash Green. “I was looking for something that could give me that classic ‘twang,’" he said “and this Semitone Special is it! It plays beautifully - right out of the box; and did I mention that it looks gorgeous?” Elliott’s current projects include recording & production, lectures, and consultancy on multimedia content. XVIVE - The new pedal sensation Taking the world by storm, Xvive’s US designer puts his years of mojo into a rapidly expanding range of competitively priced pedals. High on the list of things that all guitarists obsess about are tone and portability. Now thanks to those very clever people at Xvive, you can cut down on your onstage clutter without compromising your tone. Xvive pedals are designed by one of the most respected electronics engineers in the industry. Howard Davis was something of a child prodigy, repairing his neighbours TV sets and radios at the incredibly tender age of 10, and went on to work alongside some of the biggest names in the business creating classic FX units that are sought after around the world. After accepting an offer to become chief designer for Xvive, Howard has brought his considerable talents and experience to bear on these great new stateof-the-art analog pedals. So what does Howard think that Xvive bring to the party for guitarists? “Mine is the designer's opinion; what counts most are the opinions of the musicians that buy and use these pedals”. Howard continues “I'd say the best thing is the small size of the mini line units, enabling many of them to be assembled on a pedalboard without excessive weight. All are designed with total (true) or buffered bypass and the high input impedance and headroom optimum for use with hot pickups.” www.xviveaudio.com
Certainly musicians are falling in love with the Xvive range, with top players like Berit Hagen (pictured - AKA The Commander In Chief), John Verity, Jerry Donahue and Thomas Blug all more than happy to associate their considerable pedigrees Xvive Mini Pedal Board with the brand. But for those XVF1 (excludes pedals) £39.99 new to the world of pedals, just trying and choosing your first fx unit can be a daunting prospect. What suggestions does Howard have for the guitarist new to pedals? “Try it before you buy it” he says. “If possible, try it with your own guitar and amp, testing only one pedal at a time” Obviously Howard is proud of all his creations but does he have any particular favourites? And is there anything super cool in the pipeline he can tell us about? “I’m particulary happy with the Xvive Professional Line, which now consists of the Wave Phaser and Wave Overdrive-Fuzz. Coming in 2015 is the Memory Analog Delay, which is a state-ofthe-art pedal based on a classic I designed in the late 1970s. I can see that being their best seller for a long time to come.” So get out there and check out the super cool Xvive range including the Maxverb - the first in the line of Xvive digital pedals. Fluence by Fishman Multi-voice single width pickups for electric guitars.
Every so often, something comes along that literally re-defines the way things are done. When it comes to electric guitars, that ‘something’ is Fishman Fluence Multi-Voice pickups for electric guitar.
Later this year, two sets of double width pickups will also be available, featuring classic P.A.F and high-energy modern pickup tones.
Larry Fishman and his team, have a full pedigree when it comes to re-imagining how to improve things for musicians, and this latest achievement is garnering praise from all over the globe.
For now though, if you’re searching for the ideal versions of those single classic tones… without the baggage, then you owe it to yourself to check out Fishman Fluence Single Width Multi-Voice pickups for electric guitars.
Fishman Fluence Single Width pickups are a direct replacement for the pickups found in any guitar with standard single coil pickups.
Available in singles or as a set with all appropriate hardware and components included.
Reimagined without wire coils, Fluence pickups allow players to un-wind from the noise, hum, and inductance issues that plague other pickup designs. That’s it! No more 60 cycle hum! No more having to mark crosses on the stage where you can stand without interference, but more importantly...
Tone. Fluence delivers the most sought after single coil tones from vintage sweetness to overwound punch, and the tone is consistently accurate. Like all Fluence pickups, the Single Width is Multi-Voice. That means it has two distinct, selectable voices onboard. Voice #1 is a great vintage tone, sweet and clear. While voice #2 is more of an overwound “Texas” tone – hot and muscular. The sounds are accessed via a pushpull switch on the 2nd tone pot (included in the set).
Fluence individual single width pickups Black or white £115
Offering 200+ hours of playing time on a single charge of the optional USB battery pack (fully charging in 2 hours), there are no screws to remove, no pickguard alterations or other ‘finicky’ bits to do. Just plug in a standard USB charger, and another 200 hrs playing time is on tap. Fluence Single Width pickups can also be powered by a standard 9V battery.
Fluence set of 3 single width pickups Black or white £235 Fluence rechargeable battery pack £109
This is real physics. Fully analog in design, Fluence does not rely on modelling, mathematical sculpting or other digital processing. They are real pick-ups that respond just as well as your old classics do to your amplifiers and guitar, but without the usual hum or cable capacitance problems that have in the past, been ignored and overlooked as necessary evils. twitter.com/gearmagazine

GRAPH TECH - The world’s leading accessories For guitarists, guitar techs, luthiers and repairers. • Increase harmonic content up to 200% over bone • Superior string vibration transfer • No dead spots unlike bone/ivory • Easy to work with - sand/shape
Graph Tech Guitar Labs based in Canada are renowned around the world for producing some of the industries most innovative and reliable nuts, saddles, bridge pins, bridges and pickup systems and are used on some of the biggest names in the guitar world. Through patented methods and proprietary techniques, Graph Tech has designed specific tone and performance enhancements that were once impossible to achieve.
• All the benefits of TUSQ and impregnated with PTFE to provide permanent lubrication • Eliminates string binding at the nut • TUSQ XL - Vintage white colour nuts& saddles • Black TUSQ XL - Black colour nuts & saddles
Almost three decades ago, Graph Tech's President Dave Dunwoodie was spurred on to start the company "on his kitchen table" after a bad experience with his guitars vibrato system at a gig. During a guitar solo, he was immediately introduced to the problem of string binding on traditional guitar nuts. "I went to do my first "wang" and went totally out of tune" Dave said. "I couldn't use the guitar for stage work at all!"
Dave began experimenting with a variety of composite guitar nuts designed to eliminate string binding. He engineered the world's first self-lubricating nut in 1983, a formula 500% more slippery than graphite. Almost thirty years later Graph Tech has created some of the worlds most recognised products and brands in the music industry such as String Saver Saddles the first saddle to drastically reduce string breakage in 1990, TUSQ man-made Ivory in 1992, and the first plug and play, modular acoustic/midi pickup system, the Ghost in 2003. The result is an outstanding reputation for quality and rapid acceptance by guitar players. Dave's commitment has never waned: "I envisioned a people-and service-orientated company that can turn on a dime and respond to our customers' needs. Week after week, customers write us unsolicited letters and emails letting us know these are the first products that they've ever bought that actually do what they promise to do. Imagine that!" Other brands from the Graph Tech stable include Nubone precision engineered nuts and saddles, ResoMax harmonic bridge system, Ghost modular pickup systems, Chops PrePlay professional hand care, TUSQ picks and the new innovative Ratio tuned machine heads. Ratio machine heads have tuned gear ratios to each string position so that every string responds the same to any tuning adjustment. You get fine tuning on the thicker core strings and coarser tuning on the thinner core; anywhere from 12:1 to 39:1 gear ratio. One turn is about one tone change on all strings, making tuning, retuning and open tunings easier, quicker and more intuitive.
• New class of picks with built in harmonics • White = bright, Vintage = warm, Grey = Deep • Available in three tones, three shapes, three gauges • High thickness to stiffness ratio - thin yet stiff.
• XB formulated for low end bass harmonics • Ideal for ukuleles/guitars with laminated tops/back sides that need more bass response
• Environmentally friendly uses recycled materials • Derivative of TUSQ material • Available in Luthier packs
• Authentic, studio quality acoustic guitar tone for electrics • No piezo ‘quack’ • Incredibly durable piezo saddle • Individually calibrated for even string to string output • Easy install with plug & play pre-amps & accessories • Auto-lock feature magnetically locks the bridge & tailpiece with or without strings installed • Proprietary ResoMax alloy is extremely light weight with high tensile strength • Incredibly rich harmonics • Triple plated
• Permanently lubricated to dramatically reduce string breakage • Increased tuning stability, harmonic content & sustain
Developed with intense testing and engineering Graph Tech products have tone, performance, respect to tradition and quality built-in. If you are a guitar tech, guitar maker, repairer or a player that needs to upgrade or replace your instruments parts and haven’t already switched to Graph Tech, then now is the time. • Use 30 seconds before performing • pH balances your hands to protect strings and hardware • All natural formula which is fast absorbing & non-greasy

As anyone who has ever suffered from GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) knows, we are happy to change our guitars, amplifiers, pickups and pedals quicker than our jeans, convincing ourselves that the next purchase is the ‘One’ (Yeah, heard that a few times - Ed’s wife) and yet we rarely stop to think about that small piece of plastic (delrin, nylon, tortex, whatever) that ultimately is the first connection between ourselves and our music.... Dunlop are the world’s premier manufacturers of plectra and they continue to push the boundaries of plectrum design, offering a truly huge range of styles, weights and materials. Recently added to the Dunlop catalogue is the new Primetone Sculptured Plectra range. Made from super-durable Ultex that also brings out the clarity and brightness of your instument, these plectrums feature hand-burnished sculptured edges for fast, articulate runs and effortless strumming and come in three distinct shapes – standard, triangle or semi-round - with either a low-profile grip or a traditional smooth surface. One of Dunlop’s most popular pick offerings is without a doubt the Jazz III series. Beloved by some of the worlds most well known and stunning players, Jazz III series plectrums are used by metal, fusion, country and of course jazz players, and they have expanded this range with some cool new designs and materials.

THOMAS BLUG’s BluGuitar AMP1 The journeyman’s 100w nano valve amp - never be without your sound. Well that dream amp has now come true. the BluGuitar AMP1 is a four channel, 100 watt (yes,100! - Ed) amplifier powered by the revolutionary NANOTUBE™ for uncompromising pure tube tones. From Clean to Vintage, to Classic and Modern, each channel is based on the best possible tones from the most sought after amplifiers in history, with switchable and adjustable reverb and boost controls. In addition a switchable parallel/serial FX loop, Speaker Simulation mode for silent recording, noisegate and headphone output - all housed in a unit the size of a small multi-fx board! Furthermore, in preset mode you can recall your preferred settings, using either the Clean,Vintage, Classic or Modern channel and with boost and reverb either on or off. A handy recess underneath the AMP1 allows you to use it like a traditional amp head and sit safely it upon your speaker cab even if it has a handle on top.
Well known for his quest for the perfect tone, German guitar virtuoso Thomas Blug has contributed his almost encyclopaedic knowledge of guitars and amplifiers to many manufacturers during his career (including his very popular Vintage Signature and Summer of Love guitars) but he has always still suffered the same issues that any guitarist faces when travelling around the world to perform a show. What amplifier will I be given to use? Will I have time to get it set up before the festival slot? What will it sound like with my guitar? - these questions are the plague of the journeyman musician.
With AMP1 it is possible to build a complete 100watt guitar rig and effects set up right inside your pedalboard. Less cabling means better tone and it will obviously save you an awful lot of time with set-up and breakdown at gigs. “My dream amp should suit any guitarist, whether he or she plays country, blues or heavy metal” says Thomas. “It should also suit everyone from purists to full-on sound geeks, without weighing them down with unnecessary features, but also leaving the vital functions intact.”
“I’ve always dreamed of an amp that can fulfil all my personal requirements onstage and in the studio,” says Thomas “and at the same time is so small and light I can fit it in my gig bag.”
With more products in the pipeline to designed to make the AMP1 even more versatile (not possible surely? - Ed) you can be sure that you will be hearing more from BluGuitar very soon!

Shhh... The world’s quietest studio microphone 0 dB (A) self noise The LCT 550 is about to appear on shelves around the globe. It’s currently the quietest large-diaphragm studio condenser microphone, so its 0 dB (A) self-noise by electronics and circuitry offer more than enough for studio applications, live sound, lead and backing vocals, percussion and drums, grand pianos, brass and woodwind, and classical music ensembles says the boss himself, LEWITT CEO Roman Perschon. Question #1 Isn’t “no self-noise” physically impossible? “Right up front: 0 dB (A) SPL self-noise doesn’t mean that there’s no noise at all. But it is equivalent to a sound pressure level of 20 μ Pascal (0.00002 Pa), which is so little that it couldn’t even be heard by a child’s ear under ideal conditions. (A) stands for “A-weighted” and denotes a realistic measurement procedure that’s adapted to the human ear. If you need to get a feel for SPL, here are a few more examples: Auditory threshold at 1 kHz: 0 dB SPL, 20 μPa (0.00002 Pa) Light leaf rustling, calm breath: 10 dB SPL, 65 μPa (0.000065 Pa) Passenger car at 10 m: 60 dB SPL, 20 mPa (0.02 Pa) Vuvuzela horn at 1 m: 120 dB SPL, 20 Pa Jet engine at 1 m: 150 dB SPL, 632 Pa In microphones, self-noise is such a meaningful parameter because it measures the effectiveness (or more precisely: the sensitivity) of the transducer against the noise from the entire microphone – i.e., the transducer and the electronics. So what’s actually measured is the sound events (pressure) in response to which the microphone would output a signal that’s exactly as strong as the inherent noise signal produced by the microphone itself. Hence the thoroughly appropriate term “equivalent input noise level.” And since self-noise, as just described, takes the effectiveness of the transducer AND the noise of the entire microphone into account, there are two approaches to take if you want to probe the limits of physics:
Lewitt Studio Microphone LCT550 £699 Includes: Carry case, LCT 40 SHx shock mount, LCT 40 Wx windshield DTP 40 Lb simulated leather bag
1) For one thing, you can improve the effectiveness of the transducer. But you have to keep in mind that an effective transducer also effectively converts Brownian motion (i.e. the movement of air molecules) into an electrical signal. 2) Another thing you can do is improve the quality of the electronics by designing innovative switches that use the lowest-possible number of electronic parts in the audio path, since every additional part adds a certain amount of noise. In light of these two factors, one could say that no self-noise would only be possible with a microphone that does without electronical parts and uses a transducer that doesn’t pick up Brownian motion. And I think that even for us, it’ll be quite some time yet before that becomes reality…”
Question #2 So that’s the limit of what’s possible? “We’re still not quite at the limit of what’s possible. We could probably go on researching and optimizing here for a while, yet, and maybe we will. But the limits of what makes sense have probably been reached, since 0 dB represents the threshold of what’s audible.” Question #3 When do I actually benefit from low self-noise? “In general, you can assume that nobody likes having noise on their recordings, no matter how little. Besides which, the mic stands at the beginning of the signal chain, meaning that it’s all the more important that it put out a high-quality signal. So specifically, there are two useful advantages here for professional recording situations:
recording because it’s part of the atmosphere, then the microphone should add the lowest-possible self-noise to the recording in order to conceal absolutely nothing. Just to illustrate how soft the sound sources are that the LCT 550 picks up: in order to be able to measure the self-noise of our mic at all, we first need an anechoic chamber inside which we place a second acoustically dead chamber. But even then, we have to do our measurements after 11pm – because the noise from our production lines, traffic out on the street in front of the factory, and even conversations between employees would skew our measurements. 2) Low self-noise means a better signal-to-noise ratio. And the greater the signal-to-noise ratio, the higher the microphone’s sound quality. The LCT 550’s signal-to-noise ratio is an unbelievable 91 dB (A). This isn’t to be confused with its dynamic range, which denotes the spread between the softest and the loudest signal that a microphone can reproduce… the LCT 550’s dynamic range is 140 dB (A). In a technical sense, 0 dB (A) SPL self-noise is an extraordinary achievement that we’ve managed thanks to continuous innovation. It widens the mic’s dynamic range, which reaches all the way down to below the lowest level that’s still audible. Self-noise, of course, represents the bottom of this dynamic range, and max SPL the top. And here, as well, the LCT 550 is at the front of the pack with 143 dB max. SPL.”
1) We think that a microphone should capture as much as possible in order to represent the recorded sound in the truest possible way. Now in every studio, of course, there’s a certain sound level to begin with – ambient noise, so to speak. For the most part, that’s around 20 dB (A). Now if we assume that every signal is worth 28 Gear

Shhhout... about Lewitt Pro users sing Lewitt’s praises
Lewitt LCT 340 £469
In a certain sense, a product is only ever as good as its user. Ultimately, it’s the users who either recognize its value or not. So let's have a look at who joined the ranks of official LEWITT endorsers lately and what they think about this young, serious contender in the long-standing microphone business. Gino Scarim Sound Engineer/Tour Manager – Plain White T’s, Tilly and the Wall, Blessthefall “Most compliments I get on my mix is about the clarity and punchiness. I attribute that to Lewitt. We have A/B'd Lewitt against other mics in the studio. The DTP 640 REX kick drum kicked the butt of all the other ones and the LCT 340 is now my favourite small diaphragm condenser. There is no harshness in the high end. The MTP 840 is an amazing mic for a screamer who cups the mic, there is no feedback and still a great sound. It is unbelievable.”
Lewitt MTP 840 £209
Derrick Wright Drummer – Adele, Toni Braxton, Fabulous, Angie Stone “You get great clarity but it combines with the natural acoustics of the drum. With Lewitt you get to hear the sound of real drums. They sounds amazing. It's very important that when I perform with Adele or Toni Braxton I have a real drum sound. The turning point for me with Lewitt was the professional sound I got from the DTP Beat Kit Pro 7. Man, when I heard it I knew it was going to change the sound of the mic industry. You don't have to mix and match different brands anymore. The Lewitt drum and vocal mics are amazing.” Supa Dups Producer – Rihanna, Pitbull, Estelle, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Bruno Mars, Christina Aguilera “The LCT 940 FET tube/condenser mic is transparent and warm. It’s a very natural beautiful sound but it’s also so nice and silky. As a producer I always want the best performance and best sound from the artists I record. I always try to choose the best tools so the choices I make inspire the best performances. Because of that, I use the Lewitt LCT940 as my choice of vocal mics. I can get a beautiful warm tube expressiveness or an incredibly articulated in-your-face FET sound - or anything in-between. No other mic in the world does that but Lewitt, and Lewitt does it well. Plus the vocalists love the way the tube lights up...” Fela Davis FOH/Monitor Engineer – Christian McBride, Arturo Sandoval, Chuck Mangione “Lewitt reproduce exactly what is happening on the stage. People came up to me now and compliment me on the sound. It didn't happen before I used Lewitt... but now it happens all the time! The LCT 550 overheads get a lot of the great brush work with the snare and cymbals that the drummer was doing. It also had a great round sound that was reminiscent of a high quality ribbon microphone sound. The signal was smooth and rich without any eq or compression. We have tried it on both guitar and bass amps, acoustic guitar, and sax, and it’s our go to mic now. The MTP 840 DM was great as Christian McBrides performance vocal mic. He has a deep voice and it brought out the warmth in his voice. I purchased a drum kit set and it sounds better than much more expensive mics; I have been very happy every since! I also love the way Lewitt mics look...”

Supa Dubs Lewitt DTP Beat Kit Pro 7 £1,249
Lewitt LCT 540 £529
Lewitt LCT 840 £1,029
Rick Camp Sound Engineer/FOH – Jennifer Lopez, Babyface, Madonna “Lewitt has a brilliant and warm captivating sound. The drum mics are clean, clear, and punchy. It is everything I envision that a great drum sound should be. I also use the LCT 540 cardiod capsule mic. It has a great, beautiful silky smooth sound – not harsh like some condensers can be. But my absolute favourite is the DTP 640 REX kick drum mic. I love it and take it with me wherever I go. It is a unique configuration with the dual element-condenser and dynamic capsule being all time and phase aligned. The low end is really solid, without having to add EQ. The high end is really snappy. I really recommend the brand. Lewitt is the musicians new era microphone sound.” twitter.com/gearmagazine

CYMATIC uTRACK 24 Recorder, player & interface. Cymatic Audio has introduced the uTrack 24, a universal hardware recorder/player/interface in 19" format – the go-to solution for people who want to do high-quality recordings without the need of a computer. The uTrack 24 records directly onto USB media plugged into the front panel, while a three-colour LED displays the level of all channels. The LEDs can also be used as a 24-segment level meter for individual channels. A big LCD shows all other important information and allows a fast and intuitive editing of parameters with an endless push encoder. In order to make recordings hassle-free even in dark or hectic environments, the Cymatic Audio hardware recorder features big illuminated transport controls directly on the front panel. With its reduced size of only 1U, the uTrack 24 accepts up to 24 input and output signals via D-Sub multi-pin connectors. This allows even large live events to be recorded smoothly. Thanks to the BNC WordClock input and output, the recorder can integrate seamlessly into other digital recording environments. The uTrack 24 can record 24 channels with a sampling rate of 48kHz and up to 24 bits. And it can record up to 8 channels with a sampling rate of 96kHz at 24 bits. The possibility to loop record endlessly is unique: Unlike with other recorders, there is no limit to the maximum recording time, the only limitation is the capacity of the recording medium.
Recordings can be comfortably managed and converted into other formats with a free WaveTool software for Mac and PC. Upcoming hardware module add-ons will allow the use of other formats. Thanks to the internal DSP mixer, a stereo mix of the 24 tracks can be taken directly from the headphone output on the front panel. It further features Level, Pan, Mute, and Solo controls for all 24 inputs, making an external mixer redundant. Besides its use as a recorder, the uTrack 24 can also play back up to 24 tracks, making it the perfect virtual sound provider for live applications. The Playlist mode is very useful in such cases, since it even supports uninterrupted playback. When used under OS X, Windows and iOS, the uTrack 24 turns into a powerful and comprehensive audio interface with 24 inputs and outputs, as well as dedicated Control Room and headphone outputs, each with its individual level control. Firmware updates will also bring additional features to the uTrack 24: - Cascading of two uTrack 24 units to create a perfectly synced 48-track system. - Software remote control via the RJ-45 connector. - Direct playback of standard MIDI data, for the benefit of entertainers.

Actor, producer and director Antonio Banderas is no stranger to the classical guitar. Indeed, the Spanish heartthrob played the role of El Mariachi, a gun-toting flamenco guitarist bent on revenge in the 1995 film Desperado. However the 54 year old Hollywood superstar, well known for his charity work and championing of independent filmmaking was surprised to receive a Manuel Rodriguez guitar, presented by the company president Manuel Rodriguez Jnr and joined by spanish musician Antonio Carmona. The guitar was auctioned, raising over €15,000 for the Antonio Banderas Foundation at the Starlite Gala in Marbella, Spain. No wonder the Puss in Boots star looks like the cat that got the cream!
A Fret-King Danny Bryant signature model guitar, signed by many great guitar players has raised £1,300 in a benefit raffle to help Walter Trout in his yearlong and successful recovery from a recent Liver Transplant. Through a 25 year long solo career Walter has sought to merge the essence of the blues with relevance for the times we live in. Before his solo career, he played lead guitar for John Mayall, Canned Heat, John Lee Hooker, and many others. Donated by JHS & Co. Ltd, the Fret-King Black Label Danny Bryant signature model was selected as Danny was actually standing in for Walter in his 'Walter Trout Band' while touring the USA and Canada. The raffle, organised by Walter’s friend Brian Filson took place at ‘True Blues Club’. Walter said "I am so moved and thankful for the raffle of this beautiful guitar to benefit my medical fund. Thank you to all the people who participated.” The highly delighted winner, Jimmy Nicoll from London, was presented with the guitar in the Fret-King Lounge at Ivor Mairants Musicentre in London.

ODYSSEY - Orchestral & Brass Band Peter Pollard expands range as reputation & demand grows for Odyssey, whose quality to price ratio is a winning formula for all. Pollard is at the top of his game, and those who choose to play his Odyssey brand instruments have more to smile about than just the pounds they save.
Bb/F trombone and Bb tenor trombone, Eb Tenor horn, Baritone horn, Eb tuba and euphonium outfits.
Recently the music press has highly praised Odyssey instruments for bringing to the table instruments that play and sound far in excess of their value compared to the main stream names we’re all accustomed to.
To quote just a few lines of recent Odyssey Premiere reviews from those that know - Brass Band World magazine Premiere Bb Flugel Horn £399
Feathers may be ruffled at the so called new kid on the block, but Odyssey is offering truly exceptional instruments for both beginners in their Debut range, and advancing students to professional players in the Premiere and Symphonique ranges. Not only are players in the Orchestral and Brass Band world catered for in an ever increasing range, tutors are now able to confidently recommend Odyssey to their students knowing they are highly specified, accurately made, are easy blowing, with great tonality, and are ideal both for solo, ensemble and band performances. Safe in the knowledge they are readily available from music stores who stock and repair - yes, all instruments can get damaged or broken by mistake - these have been designed by Pollard to be easily repaired by craftsmen who will appreciate the subtleties that good instrument design offers. All the instruments come as an outfit, so a quality, attractive and functional ‘zero gravity’ hard foam carry case or dedicated hardshell leatherette covered case comes as standard. Carry straps, cleaning cloths and oil are included whenever necessary. So what’s new in the Odyssey Brass Band range? First off in the Brass Band category is the Premiere Eb Soprano Cornet (OCR1000 £449) with a wonderful silver plated body with gold plated buttons, slide, bottom and top caps which immediately set this instrument off in the looks department. Supplied with a Denis Wick Classic mouthpiece this instrument is free blowing and accurate across the range with slick and efficient valves and triggers. Premiere Eb Soprano Cornet £449

“The Odyssey OCR900 is a bit like a Ferrari. It costs a tenth of the price of a Ferrari, looks fantastic and every time you use it, a massive smile appears on your face.” - Bb silver plated cornet. “Plays incredibly well and is made from high quality materials. A lot of trombone for very little outlay.” - OTB1500 Bb tenor trombone. Premiere Bb/F Trombone £399

Next up is the Bb Flugel Horn outfit (OFG1300SG £499) which again is well appointed with silver plated brass body with silver plated rose brass lead pipe and bell. Having three water keys, 3rd slide throw, monel pistons and a Denis Wick mouthpiece. To quote Mike Eccles from Brass Band World magazine on the instrument “easy blowing right through the range, with a beautiful mellow tone. Knock-out value for money” is accolade indeed.

THE AMORETTES Play Vintage, Hughes & Kettner and Regal Tip All-girl bands are a rare breed in rock music - a few notable exceptions might include old-school bands such as The Runaways, Girlschool, Vixen and Rock Goddess, female fronted bands such as Heart and the legendary Suzi Quatro.
“These Vintage Icon guitars are so well made, sound fantastic, and have such a rich tone.”s says Gill “Added to the natural organic drive of the Hughes & Kettner TubeMeister 36H, I really have now found the sound I’ve always imagined for The Amorettes. I can’t see myself using anything else from now on.”
Since their formation, Scottish 3-piece The Amorettes have been solidly gigging in clubs and festivals both at home and abroad, with their highoctane, energy fuelled performances securing them even more dedicated fans, and rave reviews, from far and wide. Drumming since the tender age of two (or so his parents tell him!), Nik has played with many bands down the years. An award-winning producer/composer as well as drummer, Nik has produced music for many acclaimed TV shows and advertising campaigns. "Chas & Dave's music requires the light and shade of the full-on rock 'n' roll numbers and the laid-back old-time ballads. Only Regal Tip 205R 5A sticks have the hard-wearing qualities coupled with the lightness of feel that are needed for this job".
“To me the Viator can sound like a harpsichord or even a lute” says Gordon Giltrap “It is now a permanent part of my guitar armoury and I love it!”

They asked, we delivered.
Probably best know for his work with Feeder, frontman and guitarist Grant Nicholas has recently been enjoying a string of solo and acoustic gigs across the world, including a stint in Japan.
John Hornby Skewes & Co Ltd have been delighted to help out with providing equipment from the Vintage, Fret-King, HK Audio and Hughes and Kettner ranges for a number of festivals including Les Fest, Hard Rock Hell, Ibiza Rocks, AOR Heaven, Scratch Festival, Hammerfest and Highway to Hell.
Grant relies on a reliable pickup system for his considerable array of acoustics, one that doesn’t detract from their inherent tone, and can be fitted with the minimum of modification to his much-loved six strings.
Les Fest organiser Dave Ritchie said "This was our third event was the most successful and best ever, massive thanks to everyone at JHS as this years main stage had real presence. Hope we can do it all again in 2015."
“I have been using Fishman acoustic pickups for over ten years now as they work so well in a live environment,” says Grant. “They are great for finger picking and full on strumming and I particularly like the Rare Earth Active Single coils which i am currently using on tour.”
JHS often supports shows and festivals with backline that sounds great and is really reliable. Check out the JHS website to see where we will be helping out next! www.jhs.co.uk
Grant has just released his first solo album ‘Yorktown Heights’ earlier this year, which he took out on the road in the autumn.

A long time user of the Vintage V400MP acoustic, she has also recently got hold of the Vintage Gordon Giltrap Signature V2000DLX “I’m a massive fan of Gordon’s so getting hold of one of his guitars is an absolute dream” she says “and the fact it plays and sounds great certainly doesn’t do any harm...”

Leciestershire Alt-rocker’s Super 73 have been busy these past few months. With a string of dates in London and across their native Midlands the band have supported Arcan Roots, Everclear and been picked up by BBC Introducing. Bassist Rob Ellis says of his Vintage Icon VJ74MRBK bass guitar – "It delivers in every aspect. The quality of this instrument is far beyond its price range in tone, playability and looks. I hit the bass hard on stage and the VJ74 handles it like a pro."
Having met as frontline members for the ‘Solid Gold Country Legends’ touring show, Luke Thomas and Melanie Greggain decided to team up and combine Lukes blinding guitar work and Mel’s stunning vocals to make one of the most exciting country duos around, winning the Horizon Act of the Year at the British Country Music Awards 2013. For many years Luke, described as one of the best young country players in the UK, has relied on his trusty Vintage V52BS electric guitar, whilst Mel is also a fan of the brand with her Vintage Sweetwater VE900MH electro acoustic. www.lukeandmel.com

"I love this guitar's vibrant springy tones and its amazing sound when amplified!" says Carrie. "It sounded amazing in the studio and I am proud that it stands tall against other guitars with a higher price tag – it's my little gem and we have become a great team!"
First picking up a guitar at the tender age of five, Carrie Martin learned the basics from her dad, she then joined a guitar club at school, and began to write her own songs in her teens, appearing on Radio Humberside a couple of times at the age of 14.
In the latest issue of GEAR, we gave you a run-down on a load of great Vintage players. Since then, though, they’ve grown their acoustic and electric family even more, with a list of top new, up-and-coming artists longer than, erm, a long piece of string.
Although always haunted by the ghosts of the blues, Jack's music fuses this with classy song writing and a folk sensibility. His voice has been described as sounding 'older and more careworn than his tender years should allow' (Acoustic Magazine, 2011), and he is also arguably the best slide guitar player of his generation. Probably one of the most beloved guitarist/singer/ songwriters on the UK folk scene, Steve Tilston made his recording debut in 1971 with ‘An Acoustic Confusion’ and has since enjoyed a long andvaried career, which has influenced and inspired a whole generation of acoustic players. Recently Steve went hill walking in and wanted a guitar that he could easily carry around with him. The Viator was the natural choice. “I love my Viator, she’s a little beauty.” says Steve “I just can’t put her down!” Steve’s latest release ‘Happenstance’ is available now and he has also turned his talents to writing – his first novel ‘All For Poor Jack’ as been enjoyed by none other than Bob Dylan. www.stevetilston.com

VINTAGE At the West End Following a sold-out-run at Hampstead Theatre, the criticallyaccalimed production of 'Sunny Afternoon' has transferred to the West End's Harold Pinter Theatre. THE KINKS exploded onto the 60s music scene with a raw, energetic new sound that rocked a nation. But how did that happen, where exactly did they come from and what happened next? With Music and Lyrics by Ray Davies and Direction by Edward Hall, Sunny Afternoon depicts the rise to stardom of THE KINKS. Set against the back-drop of a Britain caught mid-swing between the conservative 50s and riotous 60s, this production explores the euphoric highs and agonising lows of one of Britain’s most iconic bands and the irresistible music that influenced generations. The producers needed guitars that were period correct and yet solid enough for performing night after night so approached Vintage guitars who were happy to supply a VSA535-12 twelve string, VSA535 and VS590 Semi-Acoustic models, plus a left-handed LV4BK bass. REGAL TIP WEARING IT WELL and the DixieMix Jazzband DixieMix Jazzband are 6 piece outfit, who play tribute to the classic sounds of trad jazz at clubs and venues in and around the sleepy county of Norfolk. However, early this year the band recieved an unexpected gig offer out of the blue... “We got a message from the people organising Rod Stewart’s UK arena tour” says the bands drummer and vocalist Tony Wilkins “they were looking for a Trad Jazz band to play the opening spots for Rod and asked if we would be interested...”
Tony with his Regal Tips
Travelling over 2000 miles and playing in front of over a total of 130,000 people across the UK must have been a great experience? “We played 5 stadium dates all between 22K to 25K seat stadiums” says Tony, “you cannot explain the sound of the crowd when you walk out to that many people - it was a dream come true for all the band.” Tony, a long time Regal Tip user took his trusty sticks with him on the tour “I prefer a hickory stick as it is lighter in use than normal, so the 208R Regal Tip 8A wood tip is absolutely ideal for me.” So how did the shows go down? “We would like to think it was a job well done - Rod was watching us from the side of the stage, and as we came off he gave us the thumbs up and ‘well done lads, that was brilliant!’
Praise indeed from the man himself! Check out DixieMix Jazzband on Facebook www.facebook.com/dixiemix.jazzband

REGAL TIP More artists join the Regal Tip roster Dhani Mansworth
Rhythm powerhouse with Cambridge hard rockers The Treatment, 21 year old Dhani Mansworth has already toured supporting Steel Panther, Alice Cooper, Thin Lizzy, Kiss, Motley Crue and played at Sonisphere and Download.
Combining the drive of early Def Leppard with the song-writing ability of prime UFO and Thin Lizzy, The Treatment are unashamedly inspired by an era when rock bands looked like rock bands and were generally intent on causing a stir (both onstage and off); an era when the lifestyle was important, when music was everything and when vinyl was king. So when he plays, Dhani needs a stick that can take some punishment...”I use Regal Tip sticks because there the most durable sticks on the market.” www.facebook.com/TheTreatmentOfficial A first class session drummer, currently working with blues/rock singer guitarist Chantelle McGregor, Keith McPartling has been playing drums for 23 years, and can turn his talents to jazz, funk, dance and rock. Keith also plays for Nineteen84 and THE:FOOT:CLAN
“Using Regal Tip 9a helps me articulate my musical ideas around the kit, with reliability and precision” he says. “They just make my job so much easier.”
27 years later Steve, Gary and Terry got back together for a jamin London and enjoyed it so much that they have now confirmed that they are now officially re-united and will soon to be back in the studio working on a brand new Vardis Album, having already had success at a number of festivals in the UK and Europe. So what is Gary’s stick of choice for the newly launched Vardis? "The way I play is hard and strong so I need a stick to stand up to the punishment - Regal Tip does the job." www.vardisrocks.com Jake Fogarty - Drummer for UK Tech Metal band Red Seas Fire has been playing drums for around 15 years now, in all types of bands and genres. He joined Red Seas Fire in January 2013, Jake Fogarty and has toured the UK with Circle Of Contempt, as well as having the chance of playing main support to bands like Miss May I, TesseracT and Thy Art Is Murder. The festival season of 2013 also saw him playing Takedown Festival in Southampton and the UK Tech Metal festival. With one EP already recorded and released in May of 2013, titled "Exposition" the band hope to have recorded and released a part two to the first EP in the later quarter of 2013, title "Confrontation". “I play Regal Tip 205R 5B sticks. After years of trying to find a reliable drumstick I've finally come across a product that has the durability and feel that I desire. I warm up and record with 225R 2B Regal Tip." www.redseasfire.com/
www.chantelmcgregor.com Originating from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, Vardis hit the British Heavy Metal scene in 1978. Consisting of frontman Steve Zodiac on guitar and lead vocals, Terry Horbury on bass guitar and Gary Pearson on drums Vardis quickly gained notoriety for very special live performances with a unique approach of incorporating elements of 1970's glam, punk and Heavy Metal Rock’n’Roll. Their 1980 debut album, '100MPH' got them invited to play the Heavy Metal Holocaust music festival in August 1981 alongside Ozzy Osbourne and Motorhead in front of 30,000 heavy metal fans. Three more albums followed until Vardis split in the mid-1980’s

DUH DUH DURRR! Rockin’ all over the beach One of the UK’s most prolific music journalists and incredibly nice guy, Lars Mullen tells Gear magazine all about his Rocking All Over The World record attempt and sharing the stage with a legend... I toured in Status Clone, a professional Status Quo tribute band for the best part of nine years, so I’m very familiar with the three chord Quo trick that everyone seems to think is so easy to play. Sure, you could say most of the band’s material is based on a trio of chords in a variety of keys, but in reality, it’s far more complex than that. I was delighted when I was asked to be part of Guitars On The Beach, which beat the UK record for the number of guitarists playing together at one time, in September 2014 at Lyme Regis in Dorset. 3,300 guitar players thumbed along to four Quo songs, Rocking All Over The World of course the favourite and one of the songs that broke the record. I was lucky enough to get to use a prototype Vintage Icon model in white, which not only looked uncannily like the real thing it sounded fricking amazing, Ian Gilan and Lars Mullen and handled rockin’ at the beach everything I threw at it. It’s built like a granite lighthouse and delivered a massive sustain, you really don’t need that much overdrive for a Quo guitar sound, just hit it as hard as you can without breaking strings.
The high output bridge pickup pushed the front end of my amplifier to the next level on the next record attempt which was Smoke On The Water, led by Deep Purple’s vocalist Ian Gillan. I’ve interviewed Rick Parfitt and Rhino Edwards, Quo’s bass player a couple of times and they rightly say, there’s only one way to play their stuff, and it’s full on, 100%, it ain’t for the weak hearted, none of this gently stroking of the strings, if you break five plectrums a night as I very often did, you know you’re on the right track...
Lars on stage looking every bit as good as Parfitt with the Vintage prototype.
HUGHES & KETTNER ENDORSEES Andrew MacDouglas, David Locke, Birdy & Yashin Already used around the world by some of the biggest names in the business including Rush’s Alex Lifeson, Tommy Thayer of Kiss and Allan Holdsworth, Hughes and Kettner amplifiers continue to win over guitarists everywhere- here what some of the latest converts have to say about them... Andrew ‘Mac’ MacDouglas is a busy session player who has been touring with Gabrielle in the UK and Croatia and a European tour with Christian rapper Guvna B. Mac is the proud owner of both a Triamp and GM36H GrandMeister. “I love the midi functionality on the GrandMeister” says Mac. “plus noise gate, power scaling and different tones all at the touch of a button!” Best know for his many excellent YouTube videos that perfectly capture his sublime, tasteful and technically dazzling playing, David Locke has been using Hughes and Kettner amplifiers as his number one backline. “I love the mix of the crisp cleans, aggressive dirt and massive sounds that come from my TubeMeister TM36 head, Such a small piece of my setup, yet it's great for gigging too!” davelocke.co.uk Andrew ‘Mac’ MacDouglas
Henry ‘Birdy’ Bird is another busy guitarist whose main gig is with the Alt/Country act McKay. Another recent devotee to the TubeMeister range, Birdy was amazed by his TubeMeister TM36H “It’s an excellent amp for any situation. Thanks to its power soak you can get that sweet cranked tone at any workable volume. Together with the in built Red Box DI (which sounds easily as good as a mic'd speaker) it is such a versatile amp, and it looks awesome!” www.timmckay.co.uk Yashin are a post-hardcore band from Greenock in Scotland. They have toured with the likes of Black Veil Brides & Madina Lake, and have also played at Download Festival and Sonisphere. “I’ve loved Hughes and Kettner amps since I first heard the Trilogy head back in 2007” says guitarist Paul Travers “but the new GrandMeister 36 was purpose built for my needs - I couldn't believe the tones I could create from such a small piece of equipment, and all valve driven! Out with the effects pedals and in with the GrandMeister 36......who said size matters??” www.facebook.com/theyashin Henry ‘Birdy’ Bird

FURTHER ADVENTURES OF JOE ELLIOTT Neither down...or out Known around the world for his role as lead singer with the heavy rock behemoth Def Leppard, Joe Elliott talks to GEAR magazine's Gav Coulson about his further adventures with the Down N Outz… GC - How did the whole Down N Outz project come about?
Vintage VSA535CR £329
JE - Well it was never planned. I've always been a massive fan of all the 70's glam rock scene, and of course, being the singer in a heavy rock band this always kind of throws people off their stride in interviews, because they always expect you to say bands like Led Zep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath. Of course I love those bands too, but my favourites were always T-REX, Bowie, Slade etc and especially Mott The Hoople. Over the years I got to meet each of the guys from MTH individually at different concerts and shows, and when they organised the reunion concerts back in 2009 I phoned the rest of the guys in Leppard up and said "We are not doing anything that week! Not even for ten million!" because I'd never had the chance to see them live. A few months before the gigs I got a call from Ian Hunter's wife Trudy, asking if I would be willing to do the support slot for the final night - it turns out the guys in Mott the Hoople were very aware of my love of the band, and how I'd always quoted them as my biggest influence. So I of course said yes, but the only problem was how to do it. It wouldn't have been fair to ask Leppard, (for either Mott or Leppard), but it turns out Trudy had the answer as Mott were managed by the same people as The Quireboys, and Paul
Joe Elliott and Paul Guerin
Guerin, Guy Griffin and Keith Weir were all willing to work with me for the slot. I thought that was fantastic, as I knew their stuff and its that proper song based rock 'n' roll in the style of the Faces/Hoople/ Stones. So what I decided to do was use some the great tracks recorded by the various members of Mott The Hoople in their solo and splinter group projects - I chose ten tracks, to rehearse, which they did during sound checks whilst

The first time we met was a rehearsal room in Putney three days before the concert and after polite introductions (because up to that point I'd only spoken to Paul) we had a cup of tea then started to rehearse. Three hours later we were in the pub, having gone through everything and nailing it. The guys blew me away they were so professional and had really pulled out all the stops to make this work. Two days later we did the show, had a great gig and I went to watch Mott The Hoople's set. In the interval, at the foyer me and the rest of the guys were pinned to the wall by the

“I love Trev’s guitars, and his pickups are the tops” drawls Matt. “I love the way the Vari-coil allows me to go from single coil to full doublecoil at the turn of a dial, they are versatile enough to work with in any situation.” Matt is currently playing live with ‘The Hot Nut Riveters’ a six-piece acoustic blues/folk/ country/americana combo comprising some of the hottest multi-instrumentalists in Texas.
Amongst his very busy schedule, Matt is currently demonstrating the newly reintroduced Supro Amplifier range at guitar and music shows in the US and around the world, and visitors will see him rocking out with his Fret-King guitar range. A long time friend and admirer of Trev Wilkinson and his Fret-King guitar range, Matt was presented with his own ‘Matt-O-Matic’ guitar a few years ago, and has recently expanded his guitar range to include the Black Label FKV21SAGB Semitone Special and the FKV3JE John Etheridge Elise.

audience, all of whom were saying how fantastic it was to hear those songs played live, how they weren't expecting it and 'had we recorded an album?' It was then we realised we might have more to offer than a 45 minute set... GC - You and the rest of the guys have since gone on to record 3 albums, including the latest release "The Further Adventures Of The Down And Outz" Is it difficult to juggle the commitments of writing/touring/recording with you all having other projects that often have to take precedence? JE - It can tough sometimes, but its not like climbing Everest in roller skates! I'm always working, my brain won't let me stop, it can be writing or recording, or something as daft as taking some olds songs off cassette and burning them to a CD, but I have to keep active, its what I do. As far as writing is concerned I'm lucky in that I don't have to write in a particular way. Sometimes I can be sat at the piano and come out with something that will be very much a Leppard track, the next song might be like the Faces or Bowie. Im not normally an overtly fluent songwriter, I'll sometimes get stuck on a word for ages, but I had a week in California where I wrote a song every day. I feel very I'm lucky to have been given this gift, so although it can be hard its more than manageable. GC - You have your own studio 'Joe's Garage' based at your home in Ireland who has been your favourite recording session so far? JE - (Laughs) I set the studio up in 1989 after I saw the bill for the 'Hysteria' album. But seriously, with Leppard we are (laughs again) or were, not so much any more thank goodness, labour intensive in the studio. We would spend weeks just getting one sound right, so having our own studio meant we had the luxury and time to
take as long as we wanted. Plus, the convenience of being at home is fantastic, it might sound strange with touring round the world and everything but I love being at home and this gives me that luxury. We've done some great recordings here I'd say 90% of Leppard's material has been put together here since Hysteria, we did some great stuff with Ricky Warwick. One time that really sticks in my mind is when Def Leppard and The Hothouse Flowers got together and we records some stuff under the moniker 'Acoustic Hippies From Hell'. We did one track that I'd written 'From The Inside' and covers of 'Little Wing' and 'You Cant Always Get What You Want'. Its funny but when you get two bands from polar opposite genres working together it can sometimes come together even better. Another time is when we did the last Down n Outz album and Paul Guerin was recording the solo for 'Journey'. The hairs on the back of my neck just shot up - thats a one-take first take solo. I turned to the engineer and we both just said "Holy Shit!" Its like he just pulled it out of the air. GC - You are also the host of your own radio show on Planet Rock every Saturday Night, how did you get into that and are you enjoying DJ'ing? JE - It really came about because our PR Company approached them for an interview and they said instead of that why didn't I present an hour long show each week for 6 weeks. So I said OK, but only if I get to play what I want to play and they said absolutely fine. I don't think I could do it if I had to work to a playlist, I much prefer to play songs I can relate to and tell stories about. I was once asked to fill in for Simon Bates on Radio 1 for a week and so you had me on there, 9am while 12pm playing Iron Maiden Deep Purple, and loads of other rock stuff. In fact I got a hand written letter from Peter Grant (Led Zeppelin's Manager) saying "thank you, thats the first time anyones played 'Kashmir' at 11am on
HUGHES & KETTNER Silver Story "Best sound quality I have ever heard from a valve amp. Both for studio recording and live shows; no other amp even comes close for me." – Liam Hays enthuses about his TubeMeister 36 watt head. Silver Story are set to release their album “Cold Street Lights” on the 18th September with the debut single “Bleed” available to stream now. After the success of their previous two EP’s and amassing a large audience across the UK with two successful tours, the punk rock band from Merseyside will return with their highly anticipated debut album “Cold Street Lights”. Taking influence from a pool of genres Silver Story’s music has taken on a sound which is organic yet nostalgic of early 00’s punk. Silver Story’s frontman and vocalist Alex McCabe recently said that the band have written a new “adrenaline fuelled” song. The twitter.com/gearmagazine
UK radio"… GC - You've been using one of Paul's Vintage VSA535CR Semi Acoustic guitar for the videos and recordings - how do you find it? JE - Paul's always championing the brand and he finally convinced me to try this one out. Its fantastic. It plays great, the intonation is spot on and its comfortable to wear too believe me, when you a recording a video all day the last thing you want is a heavy uncomfortable guitar on your shoulder for eight hours! It looks the business too the deep red colour is superb. GC - So what is next on the agenda for you? JE - We've got the press and publicity for the upcoming NFL Oakland Raiders vs Miami Dolphins pre-game show performance at Wembley Stadium, then we will be looking to finishing off the new Leppard album. We've got four of five songs already to go, and we've just been waiting for Vivian (Campbell, lead guitarist was recently diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma) to get back on its feet. Luckily he's got the all clear now but he obviously needs some time to recover, so we will be looking at that coming out early next year. Then we've got a two week tour with the Down N Outz starting on 5th December right through until the 18th. GEAR magazine is pleased to offer six readers signed 'Further Adventures of The Down n Outz' CD's and posters, simply answer this question. The members of the Down N Outz come from which two UK rock bands? - answer on a postcard to the usual address.
track Bleed will feature as the lead single on the new album and the video is available now on Youtube. The video for the bands first release “My Empire” has amassed over 22,000 views reinforcing the demand for this young, up and coming band. He added that “Bleed” is mainly about being bored with the uniformity of life and seeking out confrontation and danger to cure the boredom. The album which was recently recorded in London, is a leap from the bands last EP and has already received critical acclaim for its high energy hooks and catchy lyrics. The recording “Cold Street Lights” sees an impressive array of producers, including Matt O’Grady who has worked with the likes of You Mat At Six, Deaf Havanna and Don Broco. Silver Story’s live shows have left audiences captivated and impossibly intrigued by Britain’s punk rock band and a lot of the inspiration from what they do, stems from some the of the greatest rock artists of the all time, including Nirvana, Blink 182 and A Day To Remember.

SUPRO: THE LEGEND RETURNS The lore, the legend, the tone.
Thunderbolt S6420 £899
Highly-sought after by collectors and tone aficionados across the world, Supro amplifiers exploded onto the scene way back in the 1930’s – before the solid-bodied electric guitar – and were responsible for that gritty, wailing blues tone associated with the early days of the Chicago blues scene. They went on to be used on some of the most iconic recordings of the 60’s and 70’s, with legends such as Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix (who toured with Little Richard and The Isley Brothers using Supro) and Albert Lee all touring and recording with those incredible little combos... Fast forward to today and Supro amplifiers are back, better and bolder than ever. Re-engineered by Bruce Zinky and David Koltai, the new breed of Supro amps are still based on those classic, original circuit designs, and as soon as you plug into a Supro amplifier you know your ears are in for a treat. A clean, rich tone, with a tight bottom head and crisp highs, slowly crank the volume and hear that overdrive roar that still keeps its definition and power to cut through any mix. So lets take a closer look at these newly re-introduced tone machines... 1624T Dual-Tone – the vintage 1624T amps are prized by collectors as they embodied the most desirable aspects of the Supro sound. Based on those classic circuit designs, the 1624T is a 24 watt 1x12 combo which can easily handle most gigging situations whilst achieving a beautiful saturated overdrive tone and still keeping its

tonality and clarity. By using 6973 power tubes, the Dual-Tone has a unique tone that delivers a satisfying chunk of 50 years of rock ‘n’ roll from its gloriously retro and compact design whilst a tube-driven tremolo circuit adds to the whole vintage vibe. Also featuring linkable channels, with their own dedicated volume and tone controls, by plugging into the IN1+2 input you link both channels in parallel for double the input signal and double the gain. This allows you to drive the power amp as hard as possible, and by using a simple A/B pedal you can ‘channel switch’ too – you gotta whole lotta love that overdrive tone! The 1690T Coronado is a reissue of the 1964 classic Supro tube amp. Featuring a Class A dual 6L6 tube-rectified power amp, the Coronado can give you everything from mellow jazz, country twang, singing blues and all out rock ‘n’ roll!
out the very essence of your guitars inherent voice. Using a a 5U4 rectifier tube to deliver that classic tone, through a pair of classic 6L6 power valves, the Thunderbolt can cope with the largest of stages, with all the gain you might need directly on tap from your guitars volume control. But wait a minute – did we say finally..? The S6420+ Thunderbolt Plus gives you all the features of the standard Thunderbolt with a switchable power amp that can deliver 35 watt ‘Class A’ tone as well as a huge 45 and 60 watt Grid bias modes for even more headroom and tonal variation. Roller replaces delrin cap: • smoother action • superior geometry • reduced wear
Contoured lever replaces straight bar: easier to use
Ever since we introduced the roller on the Shubb Deluxe capo in 1998 we have liked this design. For several years we have been researching production techniques that would enable us to offer the roller design, along with the contoured lever shape for ease of use, at the same price point as our standard capo. Now it's ready. And while we were at it, we smoothed and rounded its edges to make it feel even better to use.
Available in five grades, Extra Soft to Super Hard.

Big Venue Pack
LUCAS NANO 600 offers everything musicians and DJs need to get the audience’s groove on. It delivers the goods at fairly big gigs: Depending on setup size, it serves up sweet sound and slamming beats for up to 200 people. Its jaw-dropping audio performance is powered by a unique package of innovative technologies, including some real breakthroughs. And that makes LUCAS NANO 600 a first-class stereo PA with the flexible setup options. It’s even a serious alternative to conventional full range cabinets and column speaker systems.
Boosting the low end without sacrificing mids and the snappy attack needed for dynamic bass signals is no mean feat. But our HK AUDIO engineers managed to coax true full range performance out of PULSAR, creating an audio experience that‘s nothing short of spectacular on stage.
