Houses with “ocol”, Romania Dan, Sofia

Construction The buildings are constructed entirely out of wood, with solid compact walls. The wood logs can be processed with a circular section or with a rectangular section. The first process style is also called Romanian wood processing style and the second one German wood processing style. The jointning is realised in two distinct ways: either the logs are slightly guttered and stacked over each other, which can be observed in the examples a,b, and c or the log‘s ends are shaped into a trapesoidal form and united., which can be observed in image d. The first system of construction created visible, proheminent criss-cross corners while the second system creates a clean corner.

Materiality/Feel of surface For the finishing work, the spaces between the wood logs were filled with clay, then, after the clay dried, the whole wood wall was covered with clay. Finally, the wall was painted in white with lime mortar. The plaster protects the wood from degrading and ensures thermal resistance. The roof is coverred with fir shingles. The materials used in the construction are all natural and can be found in the vicinity: the wood is fir, from the forest; the clay is from the soil and the lime is from the calcium deposits in the limestone mountains. Process The constructor of the household is always the man, the peasant. The community plays an important role in helping for the construction of the household. The extended familly is usually the primary help but also the cathegory of specialists, the carpenters, which play an essential role in providing the materials, processing every log for the walls and roof structure and making the fir shingles for the roof envelope.

Atmosphere/ Genius loci This type of architecture, almost like a closed citadel with only one exit, expresses shelter from the harsh life in the mountains. The inner courtyard is the central place where all the activitites of the peasant life happen. The courtyard is: the shelter for the animals, the storage for the worktools and for the food and the home for the people. This architecture expresses very plasticly a closed economy, a closed business for carpentry and cheese making. The household is indeed the imago mundi of this population. It is the architecture they create on a previously choosen spot, in the form they find best, with an image of harmoniously blend of natural materials and where they develop the economical activities that the nature allows.
