JOHANNA STEWART DESIGNER

ABOUT ME

I am a designer who has earned her Bachelor of Design from the University of Florida, and I am working towards my Master’s in Interior and Lighting Design from the New School. While my main focus in school thus far has been Interior Design, I am passionate about many other fields of design as well. I feel the most strongly about design for the hospitality market sector because of my love for the marketing and branding side of design. For the entirety of my career as a designer, the concept of artistry has driven my work. I have been interested in the visual arts since I was a child, and that interest was what inspired me to take the design path for my education and career. I am most creatively driven by the feelings, emotions, and experiences that are developed through expressive art. I prioritize artistry in all of my projects. I believe that an emphasis on artistry can lead a design project towards innovative design strategies and an impactful experience for the user. I find there to be significance behind projects that recognize the maker as well as the art itself. I am eager to collaborate with other artists and designers to create meaningful work in the field of design.

CONCEPT:

This design creates reactions of thoughts and collisions of ideas between members of several differing educational disciplines. The spaces place emphasis on both the learning and collaboration processes. The design juxtaposes the clean lines of a laboratory with the messiness of creative thinking. The layout is adaptable to allow for a smooth transition between the disciplines as well as to encourage social interaction.

GROUP PROJECT

CONCEPT:

The concept looks to create a spa-like interior experience inspired by the natural environment of Jacksonville and its immense network of public park systems as a juxtaposition to the harshness of the idea of an emergency department visit. The design is integrative and harmonious. The natural finishes represent a holistic approach to health and wellness. The circulation and organization draws inspiration from pathways through parks and the ability to connect very different spaces.

7 LIGHTING | LUMINAIRE DESIGN

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

CONCEPT:

This design references mod art from the 1960s’s with a bold color palette and abstract floral motifs while exploring how a seemingly symmetrical or uniform design can produce irregular light conditions. The luminaire provides diffused light to the majority of the space while simultaneously lighting the back wall and creating striped shadows for added visual interest. The base of the fixture uses an irridescent pink film as a lens that forms a spotlight of color that ties into the exterior.

GROUP PROJECT

CONCEPT:

Through a sequence of spatial compositions the user experiences an emotional progression that references the build up and transformation that occurs throughout a piece of classical music or what one would experience while learning a new skill. Each layer of light builds on the last to reflect the sensation of continuously moving forward with ebbs and flows within the progression. This composition is differentiated by an introduction, a plateau, an epiphany, and a crescendo.
