or example, of six graded feature races staged at Scottsville and Kenilworth at the end of May, five fell to racehorses sold by CTS. Sand and Sea, Brave Mary and Carry On Alice were Grade 1 sprinting success stories over the Scottsville 1200, with ultrapromising freshman sire, What a Winter producing both Nursery winners in the Cape, Dutch Philip and Magical Wonderland.

down on her exceptional career when winning the Grade 1 SA Fillies Sprint. Bred by champion stud, Klawervlei, and trained by excellent strategist Sean Tarry, who is far ahead on the South African training log with a record Stakes haul, she won 11 of 29 starts, proving tough and resilient in high class sprints all around the country. Her dam, Carry on Katie died the year after giving birth to this superb speedball, so the bloodline onus now shifts onto Carry on Alice, and she is being sent abroad to extend the legacy.

Refuting witty raconteur Clement Freud’s quote that, “Owning a racehorse is probably the most expensive way of getting onto a racecourse for nothing,” Green Street Bloodstock lucked into Brave Mary for a meagre R40 000 (USD 3000) at CTS’ 2016 Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale. This daughter of Brave Tin Soldier out of Mary Lou upset the Allan Robertson field, her mid race move proving unmatchable.

Bred by Drakenstein Stud at their magnificent property in the Franschoek wine region, Sand and Sea was purchased in 2016 at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale for R1 million (USD 77 000). Multiple Stakes winning mare, Carry On Alice brought the curtain

Safe Harbour, Green Plains, French Navy and Search Party were others to record second place finishes in Grade 1 contests. Safe Harbour is providing an exceptional return on investment as she sold for just R180 000 (USD 14 000) at CTS RTR and regular placings in big races are ramping up her earnings. Green Plains, bred by golfing legend Gary Player, won the Pretty Polly Stakes and SA Fillies Nursery, before succumbing to Brave Mary at Scottsville, whilst old stager French Navy ran an admirable two length second at level weights behind champion miler Legal Eagle in the Horse Chestnut Stakes. Search Party chased home Bull Valley in the
