LIST OF ELEMENTS Heres the contents of this one off edition of this journal, A phrase “two worlds was brought to my attention by my university tutor. Two Lists have been created, Emotional and Style are the titles for the lists. One reliying on its raw idea and inteligence the other focusing on visual execution. Its quite difficult to place yourself in either catogory. Through out this journal i have noted down what people have said in detail. Listening to other peoples veiws

will help me come to realize my own. i will be talking about my experiances through the second year of my degree course, how i got here and my ambitions for the future. In this journal i hope you can get an idea of how i work and how my mind works. i will be talking about how i see things and where my beliefs lie. I have illustrated the journal from start to finish with visual representations of the storys and data i show for your visual pleasure.

THE KING OF IDEAS

MARTIN SCHOOLEY

Says “I LIKE METAPHOR’S ME, SO YOU’LL SEE A LOT OF THEM” Martin started the day of talks off well. He started his talk about when he began design years ago when he was at university himself. He spoke about contacts and how having a good set of contacts would lead to success. It was nice to see how “it was done” he showed us the process of working without the technology we have these days. His work was really strong and relied on the ideas than the visual. His wedding invitations show this technique off, very simple but very effective. I have recorded every time martin uses selective words This will be able to show visually how he explains his designs. I have to say he had some brilliant things to say either side of 168 “Ermm” and “Erhhs”.

HE’S NOT SHINING DOOR BELLS

MATTHIAS HILLNER

Mathias showed his work with a story of how he has travelled to an array of different places in the world. This was a good example of how Mathias has used his talents to take him round the world whether it be photographing a car on the piers of sunny seas or teaching in the picturesque town of Hatfield. Not shy to turn work away. Seeing his employment history, He knows what he’s doing.

BUCKET LOADS OF WISDOM

Jonathon’s work was different to the others as his earlier works were designed without any aid of computers .The drawings he showed as concepts were very well thought and drawn out. He showed us a very large project, Designing decals for planes. Branding such a large corporate company is great way to not only earn a rather large amount of money but is really good for your portfolio.

I’D BRAIN EXCHANGE WITH

MARIT MUENZBERG

Says “I APPLIED TO EVERYTHING I COULD GET MY HANDS ON” Marit struck others and myself as a very quite person when we first met her and no fault but our own we all assumed this would be the same with her work. But we were all wrong. Her work was so loud and strong. Very well thought out and beautifully precise. She has proven that working for perhaps smaller companies and working along side artists and art culture she has naturally been given more creative control, with the freedom to design, pick colours and materials Marit has given us a perfect example of free rein within design. Her works stands out and speaks for itself. She spoke nervously on the day but she had no reason to be with the solid work she stood by.

IN HINDSIGHT

WE COULD OF DONE WITH A DESIGNATED DRIVER “ITS COMMON KNOWLEDGE THAT IN A GROUP SITUATION THERE IS SOMETIMES TO MANY CHIEFS AND NOT ENOUGH INDIANS. HERE IT ISN’T ” Together as a group we did really well. I believe that it could have been done differently, which would have made the process quicker and possibly easier. In my group Stef, Paddy and myself are friends, I rate their graphic design ability highly and I respect their design views and personal views. We worked together during the days and because we enjoy being together, we digressed a lot , had a good time and I enjoyed the project, but there could have been more work

produced. But when we did the main bulk of the work by ourselves in our own time and space we got stuck and time went by waiting to see each other again to help see the way forward. There was no one person making decisions for the whole group. We could not bring ourselves to criticise each others’ work. Very close to the end of the project when it was paramount to pick one idea, we couldn’t. We decided to take each of our ideas forward. So instead of spending the last part of

the project working on one idea and having 3 heads on it we chose to have 3 ideas with one head each so the ideas were refined but not as well as they could have been if a single one was taken forward. In the final stretch a couple of days before the deadline, we had taken all the ideas bar one to their maximum potential. The one we chose was Stef’s which we all decided was the best to fit the brief. We are still very good friends and will defiantly work together again.

EXPECTED EFFORT FOR THREE PEOPLE IN A GROUP. WHAT ONE PERSON SHOULD FAIRLY CONTRIBUTE. WHAT ONE PERSON CONTRIBUTED IN OUR GROUP. OUR FINAL EFFORTS GROUPED. THREE TIMES AS MUCH EFFORT, LEAVING US ALL UNNECESSARILY WORN OUT.

As a graphic design student, I spend my days at university working on my degree. As a freelance graphic designer I spend my nights working towards a bigger portfolio and greater exposure. Now recently I have worked with clients who ask me to re brand them or help them become more profitable by means of better advertisement. Which

is fantastic and I will w bleed, staying up till 3a ting my alarm to 6 kno when I wake I am goin to design some more. O to say has become quit someone tells you they idea of what they want they no what they wan learnt, if you don’t try

work until my fingers am then happily setowing full well that ng back to university One thing that I have te clear is that when y haven’t got any t. It is a goddamn lie, nt. Something I have to draw these ideas,

however unrefined from the clients mind prior to designing concepts you will waste a lot of time. This can be tedious at times but I wouldn’t give up on design for the world. Plus I have tried manual labor, which was cut short. Knocking yourself out with a hammer, as you trip down a flight of stairs is a sign to stick to what your good at, so I did.

SORRY AGAIN BUT IT HAD TO BE DONE, IF YOU WERE OFFENDED THEN THE ONLY THING I CAN SAY IS YOU WOULD BE TWICE AS OFFENDED IF IT WAS NOT IN HELVETICA. HELVETICA IS LIKE A NETRAUL TYPE FACE THAT DUE TO REPEAT USE WE HAVE JUST BECOME NUMB TO. MASSIMO VIGNELLI

Says “I DON’T THINK TYPE SHOULD BE EXPRESSIVE AT ALL”

VS HE CUT HIMSELF FOR ART

STEFAN SAGMEISTER

Says “DO NOT READ ME, I WILL BORE THE SHIT OUT OF YOU”

Watching helvetica the film you get a really great sense of history the type face has had. It is by no doubt a beautiful type face it is no doubt very easy to look at and read. You can see the amount of work that has been put into it. But. It has been used a hell of a lot I have a set of at lest 40 logo types that are helvetica std and watching the film it is surprising even to us designers to see how much it is used. I’m not shocked to how much controversy it has caused between designers and this is a really good place to see weather or not I become someone who is into the stylistic values behind work or the emotional ideas. Vignelli says he uses three type faces. Three! I’ve used three type faces on this journal alone. Is that a little over the top to spend years designing and only using such a small range of type. He says he believes there is only a dozen good typefaces and that he’s being generous. He says what can be better than having a message in helvetica, “I love you” in extra light, “I hate you” in bold if your passionate. He spoke about how he has created he’s logos in helvetica and the logos haven’t changed in years, why? We all ask, because he said there perfect the way they are. I can defiantly see where Vignelli is coming from I believe logos in helvetica look great they look so attractive, but why, are we so used to helvetica we’ve gone numb when we see it, its everywhere.

Sagmeister hates it. Its as simple as that he doesn’t stop for a minute to commend it. He says anything I helvetica is not worth reading. He says helvetica says “ Do not read me, I will bore the shit out of you” he believes a type face should hold the passion in the word its spelling. The word “Dog” should visually bark at you. In Sagmeister’s work he uses an array of typefaces some of which are more abstract that others, He went as far as carved words into his skin for one exhibition poster which is face from laying out a blank canvas on InDesign and typing Sageister in helvetica. Which would of taken a fraction of the time. Rather less pain and to some people, “Massimo Vignelli” it would of looked perfect. I believe that the type face is really well planned out and designed its just such a shame that it has appeared everywhere. But I suppose these things happen when something so revolutionary and popular emerges on the scene everyone wanted to take a piece, designing today using helvetica is seen as a way out. An easy solution and its lost its beauty because its been over used. In my opinion that is the only reason why its been picked on. Because it has been over used so much. After watching the film I was amazed to see the amount of opinions people had on the matter and its really made me think about what is more important to me, style or emotion.

FLIGHT TO DUBLIN £ 9.98

FROM LUTON TO DUBLIN

SOMETHING DIFFERENT TRUST “A LITTLE UNEASY, PERHAPS EVEN QUEASY”

11

So I went to Dublin on Saturday. I like to say it like that, gives off the feeling that I just decided to go and then, just went. There was a list of reasons why Dublin was a good idea, its beautiful history and art museums, its beautiful architectural buildings, fantastic people, Cheap Guinness. The list is endless but one of the biggest incentives was its actually cheaper for me to get to Dublin than London from Luton also I have been to London many times and walked round the same buildings, seen the same exhibitions twice and got the t-shirt. “Lets go to the Tate! Again”. Its not that it doesn’t interest me because it does, its just I have seen it and I want more, something different. Whilst walking round Dublin I walked past what I think I was attracted to by 100 ft wall of glass with VISCERAL in Helvetica, which firstly surprised me because, need I say more, Helvetica? Really. The exhibition was free which makes it even more attractive to a student once in I wondered if it was my sort of art but I have been so keen to see as much of everything I can I walked round trying to cover up

TO THE FUTURE

TRAIN TO LONDON £ 16.50

all of my retching with a cough or a small dance. “A little uneasy” was their words and they weren’t wrong. Animals with human skin graphs, Test tubes full of living cells and mould. A book made from pig tissue. It was hand stitched together in a portable freezing display box still dripping with fat. Dead animal bones and an art piece called “blood wars” a project, which looked into the biological reaction of human white blood cells. The exhibition had everything but headless dolls, It would have been a full house of everything creepy and sickening otherwise. Nevertheless it was presented in a very intriguing way and the people taking the tours were very passionate about the work, which was really good to see. They certainly know their stuff, I really enjoyed the exhibition and although I cant see myself using any of the techniques they used in the near future I am glad I got an opportunity to see someone else’s medium of art it’s a reminder art is constantly changing and I should try to see anything and everything I possibly can.

IVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT

MY FUTURE AS A DESIGNER AND WHERE IT WILL LEAD ME “UP TO THIS POINT IVE SORT OF HAD IT ALL PLANNED OUT. I NEW THAT I WANTED TO DO THIS HERE AND THAT THERE, I NEEDED IT THAT WAY ” I’ve always had things planned, my room is planned. The way I walk somewhere is planned before I leave, maybe already thought of before I go to bed the night before I plan to go. I have piles of little black books full of information to do with my work and to do with my studies. They are neatly piled next to my collection of books and alphabetically ordered film collection. Getting the picture? When I was in high school I was studying graphic design, 3 lessons a week it kept me in school and it kept me out of trouble. I knew that I wanted to go to college and even then I knew I wanted a degree, which gave me a perfect amount of time to set myself up ready for the future, when I was in high school I designed the schools branding which is still used today. I remember thinking this will look wicked in the

future, the designs are pretty poor to look back on from my point of view but that’s just how things go and will always go within this industry but what I didn’t realise then that I do now is it does look wicked. Wicked from the point of view that it feels like I’ve been doing this for ever and I haven’t even started yet. In my little life plan of Joey lion, I have written as far as up to starting university. It was like the finish line. Now however it is the launch pad to the next chapter if you like. I have always taken a enthusiastic approach to everything I do and I have always tried to be entrepreneurial, I started working freelance in high school using the internet to trade design for money. I worked for a horse riding company and created them a website at 16, using the internet meant that they wouldn’t see past the glossy dot com domain name

and believe the Lionnn Group was a group and not just a geeky school kid who spent his evenings learning html and watching “hows its made” I will always continue to be entrepreneurial and that has helped me in many situations. We had an entrepreneurial week at university which I designed for. To our surprise, We won! And then I put a shiny pair of shoes on and represented it at the second stage, We won again. Recently we have been entered into the Finals which I am nervous for but we’ve had a great time. I’ve really learnt a lot about business, I had to otherwise we couldn’t of gone on. Like that I will carry on in my career the same. The next step is to find an employer, show them my work and hopefully if its what they like to see. Get a job and work my way up the ranks like I have aspired to do.

- A MANIFESTO -

BELIEVE ME

CAUSE “A GOOD IDEA IS KEY WITHIN GOOD DESIGN”

Graphic design is the most important thing in the world to me. It has become a life style. The way i think the way i see things, its all different. I cant help but think. I cant help but critique everything i see even if alone ill judge it in my head. bad kerning, bad layouts, bad typefaces everywhere. I belive a world without design is imposible everything has been designed or can be designed, Take a tree its organic and natural, I could cut and prune it into a shape, Design. I belive everyone designs to an extent whether they like it or not. The colours they decorate their house, the way they pot there garden plants. The way they fill their shelves. even the clothes they wear, its designing. Good design needs an idea, an idea that can plug what ever message your trying to give across into the minds of the person veiwing it. when old friends ask me what do you do, i say im still studying graphic design. the most common response is “oh yeah, your good at drawing arnt you”. This is the most annoying thing someone could say to me. its not about drawing and it never will be. i belive its all about the way you think. if you chopped all my fingers off i promise you i would still do what i do, i dont even think i own a pencil. if you can create good ideas quickly i can promise you someone will invest. not necessarily for your talents, but your mind. A good idea makes good design.

FINAL YEAR COUNTS!

REACH FOR THE STARS IS CLICHÉ. BUT WHY NOT? MY AIMS AND AMBITIONS FOR THE THIRD YEAR My aims and ambitions for the third year are pretty straight forward. I want to keep the same working attitude that is, work work work. I want to keep pushing myself to answer problems with better solutions. I will also be getting comfortable as my third year resolution is that I want to completely abuse all the studio space and facilities the university has to offer. I made a mistake in my first year of doing all my work at home, at night, with no lights on. Which not only hurt my eyes it defiantly hindered me when I became stuck or unmotivated. I very quickly learnt that this was a bad move and spending more time in the studio environment just started to motivate me, just being there with nothing

but design and designers around me. In the summer before the second and last year I want to get myself into a graphic design company to get some more work experience in the industry before I finalize. When people sit and day dream about scoring Englands winning goal or saving a really hot woman from a burning building and then kissing her in front of news cameras, my day dreams are usually making a speech, clasping a D&ad pencil in both hands, Or actually appearing in creative review magazine for real not just slipping my business cards in all the copies in WHSmith before being thrown out for looking suspicious. Now there’s ambition!. I will be doing my best in the third year and

like all students with their dissertation looming I’m slightly nervous. I haven’t decided just yet what I want to write my dissertation on but I have had this thought that I should write about economics within design. It might look unusual next to all the papers on Type or fashion but I was given a book to read by the person who interviewed me for university called “freakanomics” he said it would make me think about things differently, it certainly did, it made me look at things from such a strange angle that in many situations I’ve questioned lots of things and I would like to show how economics is so very important in design today. I’m very excited for the third year, I cant wait to get stuck in.

- FINALLY -

IN CONCLUSION I have decided that I am defiantly more inclined to go with the ideas behind something making me slap bang on the Emotional side of things. If I’m honest something that looks attractive is something I would go for and defiantly something I would feel happy designing but I love a good idea to drive a project, The aesthetics come later for me it is all about the meaning behind something. I have really enjoyed writing this journal up. To save the planet I have

21

decided to do one of two things. Hosted this journal online and I have chosen to leave a handful of disks around campus containing this file. So either your one of the few to find a disk or you may of stumbled into this online. Pat yourself on the back. Were saving the planet and were having a wicked time doing it. Check out my blog if you want constant updates to what I’m doing. Either way take it easy. Nice seeing you. Joseph lion
