Private Reserve Guitars, Woodwind and Brasswind, Music 123, and Harmony Central. Founded in Hollywood by Wayne Mitchell in 1959 as The Organ Center, a retailer of electronic organs for home and church use, it became a major seller of Vox electric guitars and guitar amplifiers, changing its name to The Vox Center in 1964. Toward the end of the 1960s, Vox—whose sales derived largely from its association with The Beatles, who made extensive use of its amplifiers—fell in popularity as Marshall amplifier users Eric Clapton and others captured musicians’ imaginations. Accordingly, Mitchell once again changed the name, this time to Guitar Center. The popularity of rock and roll in the 1970s allowed Mitchell to open stores in San Francisco and San Diego, as well as several suburbs of Los Angeles. Ray Scherr, previously the general manager of the San Francisco store, purchased the company from Mitchell in the late 1970s. Scherr owned and operated it until 1996 from its Westlake Village headquarters. Although synthesizer-driven disco and New Wave pop sapped rock’s audience in the late 1970s, the 1980s “guitar rock” revival led by Van Halen and a concurrent influx of Japanese-produced instruments brought guitar sales to unprecedented levels. Guitar Center took full advantage of this sales bonanza, and by the end of the decade began an ambitious program of expansion across the entire United States. Using its size as leverage over the musical instrument business, it developed into the largest musical instrument retailer in the country, and made an initial public offering of stock in 1997.

COMPANY DEVELOPMENT Sample Logotype + Icon I got the idea to create an icon to go along with my logotype from doing research. Several companies such as Nike, Apple and Reebok have their company written out in a specific typeface, as well as a distinct icon or image. I will take this same approach for SoundWave, if approved.

The drum is a member of the percussion group of musical instruments. In the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system, it is a membranophone. Drums consist of at least one membrane, called drumhead or drum skin, that is stretched over a shell and struck, either directly with the player’s hands, or with a drum stick, to produce sound. There is usually a resonance head on the under side of the drum, typically tuned to a slightly lower pitch than the top drumhead. Other techniques have been used to cause drums to make sound, such as the thumb roll. Drums are the world’s oldest and most ubiquitous musical instruments, and the basic design has remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years. Drums may be played individually, with the player using a single drum, and some drums such as the djembe are almost always played in this way. Others are normally played in a set of two or more, all played by the one player, such as bongo drums and timpani. A number of different drums together with cymbals form the basic modern drum kit.

SUB-CATEGORY

A microphone (colloquially called a mic or mike; both pronounced / maik/)is an acoustic-to-electric transducer or sensor that converts sound into an electrical signal. Microphones are used in many applications such as telephones, tape recorders, karaoke systems, hearing aids, motion picture production, live and recorded audio engineering, FRS radios, megaphones, in radio and television broadcasting and in computers for recording voice, speech recognition, VoIP, and for non-acoustic purposes such as ultrasonic checking or knock sensors. Most microphones today use electromagnetic induction (dynamic microphone), capacitance change (condenser microphone), piezoelectric generation, or light modulation to produce an electrical voltage signal from any mechanical vibration.

A musical keyboard is the set of adjacent depressible levers or keys on a musical instrument, particularly the piano. Keyboards typically contain keys for playing the twelve notes of the Western musical scale, with a combination of larger, longer keys and smaller, shorter keys that repeats at the interval of an octave. Depressing a key on the keyboard causes the instrument to produce sounds, either by mechanically striking a string or tine (piano, electric piano, clavichord); plucking a string (harpsichord); causing air to flow through a pipe (organ); or strike a bell (carillon). On electric and electronic keyboards, depressing a key connects a circuit (Hammond organ, digital piano, synthesizer). Since the most commonly encountered keyboard instrument is the piano, the keyboard layout is often referred to as the “piano keyboard.

SUB-CATEGORY

A loudspeaker (or “speaker”) is an lectroacoustic transducer that produces sound in response to an electrical audio signal input. Non-electrical loudspeakers were developed as accessories to telephone systems, but electronic amplification by vacuum tube made loudspeakers more generally useful. The most common form of loudspeaker uses a paper cone which is vibrated by an attached voice coil electromagnet between the poles of a permanent magnet, but many other types exist. Where high fidelity reproduction of sound is required, multiple loudspeakers may be used, each reproducing a part of the audible frequency range. Miniature loudspeakers are found in devices such as radio and TV receivers, and many forms of music players. Larger loudspeaker systems are used for music, sound reinforcement in theatres and concerts, and in public address systems.

Turntablism is the art of manipulating sounds and creating music using phonograph turntables and a DJ mixer. The word turntablist was coined in 1995 by DJ Babu[1] to describe the difference between a DJ who just plays records and one who performs by touching and moving the records, stylus and mixer to manipulate sound. The new term coincided with a resurgence of the art of hiphop-style DJ-ing in the 1990s. John Oswald described the art: “A phonograph in the hands of a ‘hiphop/ scratch’ artist who plays a record like an electronic washboard with a phonographic needle as a plectrum, produces sounds which are unique and not reproduced—the record player becomes a musical instrument.”[2] Some turntablist DJs use turntable techniques like beat mixing/matching, scratching and beat juggling. Some turntablists seek to have themselves recognized as traditional musicians capable of interacting and improvising with other performers.

SUB-CATEGORY

A guitar is a popular musical instrument that makes sound by the playing of its (typically) six strings with the sound being projected either acoustically or through electrical amplification (for an acoustic guitar or an electric guitar, respectively). It is typically played by strumming or plucking the strings with the right hand while fretting the strings with the left hand. The guitar is a type of chordophone, traditionally constructed from wood and strung with either nylon or steel strings and distinguished from other chordophones by its construction and tuning. The modern guitar was preceded by the lute, the vihuela, the four-course Renaissance guitar, and the five-course baroque guitar, all of which contributed to the development of the modern six-string instrument. There are three main types of modern acoustic guitar: the classical guitar (nylon-string guitar), the steel-string acoustic guitar, and the archtop guitar. The tone of an acoustic guitar is produced by the vibration of the strings, which is amplified by the body of the guitar, which acts as a resonating chamber. The classical guitar is often played as a solo instrument using a fingerpicking technique. Electric guitars, introduced in the

are recognized as a primary instrument in genres such as blues, bluegrass, country, flamenco, folk, jazz, jota, mariachi, metal, punk, reggae, rock, soul, and many forms of pop.

1930s, use an amplifier that can electronically manipulate and shape the tone. Early amplified guitars employed a hollow body, but a solid body was eventually found more suitable, as it was less prone to feedback. Electric guitars have had a continuing profound influence on popular culture. Guitars

SOUNDWAVE To Whom It May Concern: It is a pleasure to have been asked to write on behalf of Mitchell Garlett: I was his Cross Country Coach. I began my coaching career in Cross Country at Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio in 1965 and over the years have produced several conference and state champions. Mitch opened our relationship when he stepped forward last June to run Varsity Cross Country. First, Mitch Garlett is dependable, trustworthy and obedient. Arriving early, Mitch participated fully in our training and was always prepared for each practice. On those occasions when I could not be present, Mitch could be trusted to run the workout as planned. Second, Mitch Garlett is a goal-oriented achiever. Mitch sets forth plans for success, then Mitch implements his plans with work. For example, when Mitch wanted to excel in Cross Country, he put forth extra effort in optional evening and weekend training alone. His work produced successes. As a first-year harrier, Mitch earned the No. 2 berth on the team. Mitch’s level of effort set the standard for his younger teammates. Finally, Mitch responds to the call of leadership. Mitch’s thoughtful remarks and comments are well received by his team. It is true that Mitch Garlett distinguished himself by his personal hard work, but Mitch also earned much respect for his demonstrated ability to foster growth in his younger teammates. At the high school level it takes much courage to lead, and Mitch possessed such courage. In short, Mitchell Garlett has earned a reputation as a hard-working, trustworthy individual who strives to excel. He responds with courage when challenged to produce his best. I regret that I had the pleasure of coaching him only a single year. Mitch will do well in college. I strongly encourage you to give Mitchell Garlett’s application a favorable review. If there is any question, or if I can be of any other assistance, please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Sincerely,

Stephen A. Gregory Varsity Cross Country
