01 CONJUNCTIVE AMORPHOID Conjunctive Amorphoid is located within the atrium and outdoor courtyard of the Fairtrade Palace in Prague, Czech Republic - an art museum which houses historical works. The building is fairly outwardly-focused, as visitors can expect to spend almost all of their time along the “outer ring” of the building, traversing exhibits. Meanwhile the existing courtyard/atrium is a bleak space, rarely open to the public. This is remedied by occasional

installations by various local artists. Our design brief called for one such installation. The outwardlyfocused existing condition is the main design driver for my project. Conjunctive Amorphoid is intended as a central, connective “tissue” - an exciting, interstitial progression of social spaces that literally ties together the building’s woefully disjointed rooms. Blobular masses encase social functions (informal art exhibits,

lounges, cafes, and a nightclub). These deform to accommodate a series of tubular pathways protruding from them and into the existing building, which project diagonally and across the atrium to connect distinct spaces, and latch on to the existing structural system. This results in a radically different circulation pattern for the entire building.

02 CONICAL CONGLOMERATE Located at the site of the existing Westside Pavilion in West Los Angeles, Conical Conglomerate is a mixed-use housing, commercial, and retail complex intended to alleviate the area’s housing shortage. At the same time, the project will act as a kind of cultural gateway to West LA and UCLA which transforms the local building aesthetic and becomes an easily identifiable landmark. This is achieved through the project’s unique architectural expression. A loose collage

of conical masses occupies the site - each deformed in such a manner that they retain the general shape of their conical primitives, while generating a distinct character through slipping, breaking, scaling, and recombination. This strategy results in a few different massing types; some more haul-like with gentle curvatures, and others more gestural with more extreme curvatures and jagged intersections. For the most part, the haul-like forms are used for housing - being more compatible

with regularization and modularization. Meanwhile, the more gestural forms house the more accommodative retail and commercial functions. Fenestration, too, is indicative of different programs; where there is housing, the windows are smaller in scale and spaced at lesser intervals; and where there are office spaces and commercial functions, the windows are longer and spaced at greater intervals.

03 ARTS DISTRICT MULTIPLEX The Arts District Multiplex is located at the site of an abandoned parking lot in the hip and up-and-coming Arts District of downtown Los Angeles. The project is a hybridized fitness facility and art museum which aims to provide the diverse recreational needs of the youthful locals. The Multiplex includes fitness spaces, a basketball gym, a full-length 50m pool, art galleries, and retail (including a juice bar and a deli). The basic massing responds to programmatic requirements - the

footprint of each individual program was placed on site and arranged to best achieve optimal circulation patterns. The main architectural feature of the project is the folding roof membrane that cloaks the entire complex. The roof membrane acts as a continuous skin system which bends, folds, and tears to: 1) suggest pedestrian paths of travel, 2) encourage activity and activate the landscape by providing corners, niches, and protection, and 3) allow sunlight to permeate spaces with deep floor plates. These “tears� were

configured to allow southern daylight while preventing glare by blocking direct sunlight. The pool is placed under the basketball gym and slightly underground - acting as a cool reprieve from the harsh heated asphalt. The main workout space for weightlifting and cardio is a grand double-height room that enjoys that is in part shaped by the folding roof membrane and accompanying angled glazing.

04 SOUTH OF MARKET RESOURCE CENTER Located in the South of Market area of San Francisco, this project is a mixed-use 21st century library/resource center and apartment building. It is immediately situated in a mildly run-down neighborhood consisting of abandoned brick warehouses and parking lots - yet just a few blocks north lies Mission Street, replete with plenty of attractions, including retail and restaurants. Locals are mostly young students and working professionals. Thus the resource center posits itself as the informational and social hub of the area, whether for

studying or for entreprenuerial pursuits. Architecturally the building responds to the aesthetics of Mission Street as well as its immediate surroundings. The facade covering the north, south, and east faces of floors 2 through 4 is a terra cotta rainscreen composed of thin 1 x 6 ft panels. Its clay-based texture corresponds with the predominantly brick site context, while exhibiting a neoterism which hints at the building’s contemporary functionality.

Materiality also indicates the sectional program distribution - while the ground floor consisting of two restaurants and a smoothie bar is wrapped in concrete walls and floors 4-6 which include apartments are wrapped in stucco, the terra cotta rainscreen delineates the entire resource center, including bookshelves, reading rooms, a computer lab, lounge areas, and and openplan work-shared office.

05 HAMTRAMCK ALGAE FARM The Hamtramck Algae Farm is a community-owned algaeharvesting center and research lab in Hamtramck, Michigan. The project harvests algae in ETFE bags in its facade and converts it to biomass to be used for energy production, as well as for cooking oils and other experimental products. The

project’s appearance is inspired by the common conception of algae as a dirty, unwanted waste product. This concept is mirrored in the algae farm by a triangulating, tessellated “virus� that latches unto the building and ruptures its facade on each face. Interior walls deform to accommodate

this disruption, and the internal organization is driven by the centrality of the CO2 capture tank and a circulatory apparatus that connects diagonally and across the building to connect to different points of interest within the building.

While I jumped around a bit, and participated in all phases of the project from design to construction to deconstruction, my main task was building the “room within a room” along with a group of about 4 other students

06 BOOK SHOW At the beginning of winter quarter, Karen Lange’s thesis studio (myself included) presented our fall thesis books in our annual book show, which we affectionately called, “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To.” We displayed our books as shown in the above image, lying between white, upright books

on bookshelves within a small, white box - which we pre-fabricated and assembled within a larger room in the Architecture building. Using projectors, fog machines, and fabric, we blacked out the rest of the room, filled it up with fog, and shot colorful lasers across the room at a consistent height.

The white box sat in the corner of the larger room, hardly visible when first entering, and standing in stark contrast to the colorful laserbeams. Visitors were invited to sit around the exterior of the white box, and read our books using flashlights we provided to them.

07 THESIS Amid pretensions of social responsibility, contemporary architecture serves as a mere tool of capital, bending over backwards to meet the market demands of the developer. While architecture has always been tied to wealth, increasingly it has been optimized for wealth-extractive business pursuits like landlord-ship and marketing. As such, the fundamental social mission of architecture has been lost in the shuffle. When profit is the be-all and end-all, architecture relinquishes its role in ensuring a healthy public life. The developer model can be upturned by

maximizing urbanistic and architectural “inefficiencies” within publicly-funded projects. At the urban scale, the developer’s motive to subdivide, modulate, and codify is obstructed through irregular partitioning, idiosyncratic building configurations, and physical “barriers” that interrupt a site’s divisible land area. At the architectural scale, the developer’s motive to partition off and rent out is disrupted through redundant circulation and awkward spaces. The site is Moffett Federal Airfield, a

decommissioned pre-World War II era naval airship base in Mountain View, California. “Moffett Field” (colloquial) is currently owned by NASA, who leases it out to Google and its subsidiaries. The new proposal entails a coexisting of on the one hand, Google and its subsidiaries and all of their current activities on site, and on the other, a massive housing development and public park - funded by Google through the lease agreement they are currently paying NASA.

My responsibilities included, among other things: building study models (like the one pictured) using analog modeling techniques, creating presentation-quality models using analog modeling techniques

design of projects - participating in design crits and 3-D modeling; and I spent some time 3-D modeling custom-built components to be sent directly to fabricators.
