By bringing accessible hydroponic growth into the home, we are enabling clean and effortless gardening, sparking a purposeful habit, and increasing awareness of nutrition.
Gro THE ELDERLY
Gardening is among their favorite hobbies. Hydroponics appeals to them because it eliminates the pain-points of traditional gardening. Crop yields can even influence good nutrition.
Young professionals often embrace new and “up-and-coming technologies like hydroponics. Many also live in urban environments that lack plant life that an in-home garden can provide.
No Aesthetic Pleasure
The farm-to-table culture would fully embrace the idea of growing fresh foods in-house. Restaurants and grocery stores can provide customers with the ability to see the foods they are eating growing around them, producing a truly organic environment.
The introduction of greenery can brighten up any office space. Plants can improve employee moral, impress visiting clients, and adds a beautiful eco-friendly aesthetic.
HOW IT WORKS
UV GROW LIGHT Full spectrum UV grow light supplements nutrients gained from natural sunlight.
SEEDS OR PLANTS Seeds or germinated plants are added to the substrate.
HYDROPONIC SUBSTRATE Absorbs moisture and provides structure for the roots.
GROW TRAYS Custom shaped grow trays provide structure for the substrate while allowing water to flow to the roots.
AIRSTONES Circulates water and provides aeration for the roots.
RESERVOIR The reservoir contains 2 gallons of nutrient solution rich water. The water and nutrient solution must be maintained every 2 weeks.

Flotsam BEACH TOYS Group project - 6 weeks, Fall 2017 Focus - Materiality & Sustainability
“8 million “80%
of all ocean waste is plastic
By the year 2050, there will be
more plastic in the ocean than fish
metric tons of plastic
are dumped into the ocean every year, and this number is set to double every decade
pieces of plastic currently litter the ocean
With all this plastic in the ocean, we see a huge ethical and environmental issue, but we also see an opportunity...
MATERIAL PROCESS 2. COLLECTION The plastic waste is collected from the ocean.
1. WASTE Plastic waste exists in the ocean and congeals in large garbage patches.
3. RECYCLING The plastic is sorted, shredded into pellets, and melted down to be reformed.
5. AFTER-USE Once FLOTSAM toys reach the end of their life cycle, they can be melted down using the same process.
4. REUTILIZATION FLOTSAM beach toys are created using the recycled plastic. Any excess plastic can be melted down again.
Why beach toys...? Beach toys are widely accepted as “disposable and cheap. Flotsam toys are beach toys reinvented. These toys are durable and meaningful. Most importantly, the creation of these toys cleans up our oceans. To put it into perspective, One shovel can be composed of up to 15 grocery bags.
final toys we made
A set of Flotsam beach toys would retail for around 45 dollars and would come with 4 different hand trowels, 1 bucket, and 1 large shovel. The toys can be assembled into a carrying set for easy storage and transportation.
Flotsam recycle. create. learn.

wasted every year
50% of all
produce in the United States is thrown away.

worth of food is wasted every year
The average American family of
$2,275 of food into the trash annually.
To combat food waste, in what ways can I improve the process of freezing and thawing food, specifically keeping in mind efficiency, safety, and quality?
4 COMMON WAYS OF DEFROSTING
A better way of thawing food will encourage more people to use there freezer, decreasing the amount of food thrown away.
BACTERIA DANGER ZONE 150 F
HOW IT WORKS To begin the defrost cycle, you simply fill the tank with water and the frozen food of your choice. The pump will circulate the water while simultaneously chilling it to 40°F. Proper water circulation is key to quick defrosting. No more wasting water with a fast dripping tap. The 40° temperature also keeps food out of the danger zone for bacterial growth.
COMPONENTS Connecting Port
Sherpa is composed of four parts. The first part is the frame, which not only supports our second part, the tank, but supplies power to our third part, the chilling pump. A grate can be applied to the top to hold down buoyant food.
