looking

lying

in
an
oak
coffin.
His
eyes
are
closed
and
a
subtle
smile
is
posed
on
his
face.
 Staring
down
at
him
is
the
brown
haired,
blue
eyed
main
character,
Alex

Franco.
 Alex,
16,
is
be
founded
that
he
lost
his
brother,
not
so
in
the
sense
of
loss,
but
rather
 in
the
sense
of
intrigue.
Death
to
Alex
is
just
another
part
of
life,
but
how
his
family
 copes
with
it
is
another
story.
 
 
 Alex
is
approached
by
his
grandmother.
She
consoles
him
with
words
of
wisdom
 and
consolement.

When
he
doesn’t
respond,
he
get
frustrated.
Her
words
of
 frustration
are
almost
silenced
by
Alex’s
inner
monologue
about
his
family
and
their
 impression
of
him.
As
he
starts
to
leave
she
shouts
after
him
comparing
him
to
his
 biological
mother.
 
 Alex
sits
down
and
observes
the
scene
around
him.
He
notices
the
maroon
curtains
 and
dull
grey
carpet.
The
oak
furnishings
and
rustic
lanterns
give
the
funeral
chapel
 a
creepy
Victorian
feel.
His
inner
monologue
starts
to
speak
again,
this
time
talking
 about
his
childhood
and
who
is
brother
was
as
a
kid.
 
 We’re
now
outside
Alex’s
house.

Chad,
established
as
his
older
brother
is
teaching
 alex
how
to
do
some
skill
as
Alex’s
monologue
explains
what
it
was
like
to
have
 brotherly
advise.
Soon
after
the
monologue
stops
we
find
that
Chad
is
actually
 teaching
Alex
how
to
snipe
hunt.
As
Alex
goes
to
catch
the
snipe,
Chad’s
friend
 Andrew
jumps
from
the
bushes
only
to
scare
the
shit
out
of
Alex.

 
 The
flashback
fasts
forward
to
seem
to
be
years
later
in
Alex’s
bedroom.
As
Alex
 settles
unto
his
bed,
we
see
that
he
is
not
alone.
Grasping
at
the
awkwardness
of
the
 situation
the
girl,
who
is
much
more
attractive
than
Alex,
starts
to
realize
how
 awkwardly
quiet
the
situation
is.

They
exchange
small
talk
and
Alex
goes
in
for
the
 kiss.
She
kisses
him
back
and
then
awkwardly
wraps
her
arms
around
him.
Things
 start
to
get
heavy,
and
Alex
decides
now
is
the
perfect
opportunity
to
go
put
a
 condom
on.
 
 As
Alex
is
pep
talking
himself
in
the
bathroom
his
inner
monologue
cuts
back
in
 foreshadowing
what
is
about
to
happen
in
his
bedroom.
As
he
steps
back
into
the
 realm
of
his
perfect
room,
he
hears
silenced
giggles
and
moans.
He
opens
the
door
to
 find
his
bed
empty
and
the
girl
gone.

 
 It’s
now
morning
and
he
hears
talking
outside
his
door.
Alex
gets
out
of
bed
slowly
 and
makes
his
way
over
to
the
door.
Brushing
dirty
clothes
out
of
the
way
he
slowly
 opens
his
door
to
find
the
girl
walking
out
of
Chad’s
room
and
Chad
waving
 goodbye.

 
 We
are
now
back
at
the
funeral
and
the
grieving
crowd
is
filtering
all
around
the
 room.
Alex
looks
up
from
the
dull
inaccurate
portrait
that
is
his
brothers
funeral



program.
His
monologue
starts
again.
Looking
around
the
room,
Alex
picks
out
 members
of
his
family.
He
starts
with
his
brother’s
girl
friend
 Alex
examines
his
brothers
girl
friend
and
best
friend
that
are
grieving
over
him.
He
 then
begins
to
asses
their
future
behavior
noting
that
that
night
they
will
have
sex
 and
his
brothers
best
friend
will
be
relieved
for
the
asshole
that
he
is.
Back
at
the
 church
Alex
starts
to
focus
his
attention
to
Chad’s
best
friend
Andrew.

Andrew
is
 standing
over
the
coffin
weeping
profusely.

Alex
notices
the
pain
that
he
must
be
 experiencing
when
Bro’s
don’t
have
an
xbox
360
or
a
keystone
light.

His
attention
 then
shifts
over
to
his
parents.
 
 His
father,
Alex
describes,
is
the
short,
bald,
squeamish
man.
Looking
odd
in
his
suit,
 which
is
obviously
too
tight,
he
calls
Alex
over
to
talk
about
his
duty’s
today.

He
tells
 Alex
what
is
expected
of
him
as
Alex
reveals
that
he
is
an
ex‐marine
but
never
 regained
the
stamina
that
the
marine
corps
left
him
with.
Alex’s
mother
rushes
up,
 as
she
starts
babbling
Alex
talks
about
all
of
the
times
where
she
never
stood
up
for
 him
or
took
favoritism
over
Chad.
She
tells
both
of
them
that
the
sermon
is
about
to
 start
and
the
preacher
is
ready
to
deliver
the
speech.

 
 As
the
preacher
talks
about
life,
Alex
ponders
the
same
question.
Yet
surprisingly
 the
preacher
reveals
that
Chad
did
in
fact
love
his
little
brother
and
wished
he
spent
 more
time
in
his
life.
Alex
begins
to
cry
and
feels
awful
for
what
he
has
said
about
 his
relatives
and
how
shitty
of
a
brother
Chad
was.
He
then
stands
and
proceeds
to
 ask
the
preacher
for
the
journal
that
he
read
the
passage
out
of.
The
preacher
 refuses
and
Alex
becomes
confused
and
hurt.
He
starts
to
badger
the
preacher
in
 front
of
the
crowd.
The
preacher
still
refuses
to
give
him
the
book.
 
 Alex
takes
action
and
jumps
toward
the
preacher
forcing
the
book
from
his
hands.
 As
the
book
falls
Alex
crawls
over
and
re‐reads
the
passage
out
loud
only
to
find
that
 his
brother
was
“just
kidding”
and
he
didn’t
really
mean
any
other
the
things
he
 wrote.

 
 He
then
looks
to
his
parents
for
comfort
but
only
finds
disappointment.
Alex
throws
 a
fit,
calling
out
his
entire
family
for
being
the
worthless
bunch
he’s
always
known
 them
to
be.
The
piece
ends
with
Alex
walking
out
as
his
mother
tries
to
collect
the
 remaining
crowd
and
regain
order.

 



Screenplay


INT. FUNERAL HOME- 11 AM ALEX FRANCO is staring down at his blond haired brother CHAD FRANCO who is lying on his back, eyes closed in an oak casket surrounded by flowers. Alex, who is showing no emotion, is approached by his grandmother. GRANDMOTHER: He was a good boy. (Pauses and waits for a response) You know he loved you very much Alex. ALEX: ugh GRANDMOTHER: Alex, Chad was good to you. He... Alex’s inner monologue starts to talk over his grandmother ALEX:(V.O.) My brother was a fuck. A real fuck. He didn’t give two shits about who I was or where I was going with my life. Which is ironic, because now he doesn’t have a life, I don’t give a fuck and I know exactly where he is going.’ Alex turns and starts to walk away from his grandmother GRANDMOTHER: Alex... ALEX:(V.O) My whole family has been this way, ever since Chad was brought into the world. Chad fucking Franco. Poster boy of the All American bro douche league. I’ve almost never not cared enough about him until this very second in time. The room begins to fill with relatives and family friends. ALEX:(V.O.) Look at this room. It’s fitting seeing as my life is one stereotypical mess after another. The drapes are maroon. Could they have picked a color more dreary and awkward. What does maroon even stand for? I could understand (MORE) (CONTINUED)

ALEX:(V.O.) (cont’d) purple or red, but mixing them together? Okay, focus. Look at these people. They are actually grieving over this guy.Chad was the biggest pile of shit I’ve ever met and they adore him. Alex looks over at his parents. His mother, DEBRAH FRANCO is clinging to the shoulder of her much shorter husband, DONNIE FRANCO. ALEX:(V.O.) My parents. The cutest couple, with the star boy and the other son who plays music too loud and is always in trouble. What a joke. Look at Debrah, she’s sobbing. I bet she wore her contacts just for this occasion. And Donnie, don’t worry, I didn’t forget you dad. You and your obsession with midwest football and candy corn. What a fucking bunch of idiots. Childhood, how I miss you. INT. OUTSIDE THE FRANCO HOUSE- 1997 Alex is outside playing with Chad. Alex looks to be about 6 and Chad, 10. They are playing near a tree and Chad begins to instruct Alex. CHAD: Yeah Alex! Just look a little harder, try around the left side of the tree. ALEX: Where Chad? Are you sure the snipes come out during the day? CHAD: Yes, I’m sure. Just look a little harder! ALEX: Nothing’s going to scare me right? It’s not a monster is it? CHAD: No! It’s like a bird, just keep looking. (CONTINUED)

Donnie Franco approaches the two from his car. DONNIE: What are you boys doing? CHAD: Oh! I’m teaching Alex how to snipe hunt. DONNIE: Ah. There’s my son. (He giggles) Hey Alex, catch any snipes yet? ALEX: (looking back from behind the tree)No! Not yet Dad! Wanna help me? I think I see it but I’m not sure. DONNIE: No, I’m good. You keep looking though. Alex turns back to the tree and Donnie pulls Chad aside. CHAD: You’re not mad are you Dad? DONNIE: Of course not. Just don’t keep him out here all night. I don’t want the neighbors to be suspicious. CHAD: Okay. DONNIE: See if you can get him to climb the tree.. Alex shouts from the pine tree. ALEX: Dad! DONNIE: Kepp lookin’ son! (back to Chad) Make sure you get him real good. CHAD: Haha. Chad runs back over to the tree.

4. CHAD: Alex, look over toward the right a little more.

Alex begins to look over on the other side of the tree. Just as he does Chad’s friend ANDREW pops out of the leaves. ANDREW: AHHHH!!! ALEX: Ahhh! Chad, Andrew, and Donnie begin to erupt in laughter. Alex, who almost shit his pants, run inside. DONNIE: (as Alex passes) Careful Alex, the snipe may get you!! Fade to black as the three of them laugh. INT. FUNERAL HOME- 11:10 AM Alex is still the only one sitting in the chairs of the funeral home. He is looking around and he zeroes his attention on Andrew and Chad’s girlfriend MANDY. MANDY: (To Andrew)I miss him Andrew. ANDREW: Huh? (Pause) Oh Chad? Yeah, I miss him too. It’s too bad I wasn’t there to have his back ya know what I mean? I mean he didn’t have to be a hero. I could have saved that lady’s life. ALEX:(V.O.) Are you fucking kidding me? Saved her life? Okay here’s what happened.. INT. OUSIDE OF CHI DELTA CHI- 3:30 AM TWO DAYS AGO Alex is waiting in his car for chad across the street from Chi-Delta-Chi. Chad comes stumbling out the front door. The echo of loud music is heard and red cups are thrown about the lawn. There is a cross walk in front of the frat and across the street sits Alex.

CHAD: (Shouting back at the frat)I gotta go. Fucking late. So drunk!!! (He turns to the street) Fucking, fag brother. Where the fucking shit are you? (He sees the car on the street) There you are, you fucktard. Woah!!! Gattica!!!!!!! Chad walks to the sreet. A sority girl happens to be crossing just as he is. CHAD: Rachel! GIRL: It’s christy. CHAD: Erica... She begins to cross. CHAD: Where you goin’ pretty lady? Wanna come listen to some Smash Mouth with me? Chad beings to follow her, close on her tial while she crosses the street. She begins to slow down and chad notices she is about to step on a lotto ticket. CHAD: Psh. That’s mine! Chad pushes her to grab the lotto ticket. As he bends down to pick up the ticket he is hit by a semi truck. INT. FUNERAL HOME- 11:11 AM Alex is still examining Mandy and Andrew ANDREW: He was my bro ya know. (starting to show tears) MANDY: Andrew...(She starts sobbing onto his shoulder)

ALEX:(V.O.) Get the fuck out of here. I know eactally where this is going. This douche bag has wanted to get with Mandy since her an Chad started dating. There is now a flashback of Chad and Mandy walking past Andrew in the hallway of school as the voiceover continues. ALEX:(V.O.) Andrew’s dick has been hard the moment he walked into this place. Look at them. They continue to embrace as they cry. The vocie over is now over clips of what Alex is descibing. ALEX:(V.O.) It’s like a drive-in movie the way they are groping each other. I know EXACTALLY where this is going. He’s going to ask her if she wants to talk after this, jsut so all emotion can get out. Of course she’ll say yes. She has no one else. He likes her like this, as the makeup runs from her face at dinner he will ask her to come back to his appartment, just to watch a movie and chill out. Then when the moments just right he will put his arm around her. At first she will think it’s uncomfortable, but she has no one else, so why the fuck not? Then, just as the movie gets good he will lean in and whisper some bullshit about how he’s always loved her and how she shouldn’t be broken over Chad because he fucked that waitress over spring break in Mexico two years ago. She will start to cry a little and realize that maybe she is all too broken for this. As she gets up to leave Andrew will mutter some other bullshit about how he has waited for two years for this moment. Vonerauble, she’ll jump into his arms and then he’ll fuck her real good. Not one of those I’ve been waiting so long fucks, more like an end of the world fuck. And then (MORE) (CONTINUED)

ALEX:(V.O.) (cont’d) tomorrow, realizing what she’s done, she’ll go home and contemplate becoming a vet or something and settling down with him. In the end, he’ll just get boozed up this weekend and fuck some other chick while Mandy waits patiently for a text. What a dumb bunch of fucks. I can’t imagine a more perfect ending for the couple of the fucking year. INT. FUNERAL HOME- 11:15 AM Alex is still the only one sitting in the funeral home. Mandy and Andrew exit and the casket is now alone in the front of the room. Alex makes his way through the crowd and up to his brother. ALEX: You made my life hell, ya know that? I mean, it’s not like I wanted this to happen but you sure don’t make it unpleasent for me. ALEX:(V.O.) Chad, I must say, you made growing up intresting. INT. ALEX’S BEDROOM A YEAR PRIOR. 9 PM Alex is sitting awkwardly on the bed with a girl named REBECCA. Rebecca sitting opposite of him looks bored and uncomfortable. ALEX: So what did you think of Chem today? REBECCA: Eh, it was oaky. ALEX: Yeah, I hate that class. (pause) So you cheer? REBECCA: Yeah, that’s how I met you.

ALEX: Oh yeah. (Alex holds up pom poms) The scene freezes ALEX:(V.O.) Let me just stop it rught there. I did cheer lead, to meet girls. Lets be honest, chess club and guitar society don’t offer the strongest outlook for the female sex. The scene resumes ALEX: So, um I guess why I asked you here...do you think this is weird? REBECCA: Umh ALEX: Fuck, sorry. Um, I guess I kinda like you. REBECCA: You do? ALEX: Yeah. (Alex goes in for the kiss and she accepts) The two of them start making out on the bed. Alex’s hands startmoving about her body and she stops him. REBECCA: Do you have a condom? ALEX: Uh yeah, hold on. Alex gets up, walks over to the door, and exits to go to the bathroom. INT. FUNERAL HOME- 11:15 AM ALEX:(V.O.) (looking at Chad) You fucking dick. You fucking asshole.

INT. ALEX’S BATHROOM 9:15 PM Alex is giving himself a pep talk int he bathroom ALEX: Okay, you can do this ALEX:(V.O.) Just focus. Focus. (Pulls out condom) ALEX: Okay. ALEX:(V.O.) (reading directions)Tear perferated edge and pull condom out of package. (pulls condom out) ALEX: Ugh.(wipes lubricant on pant leg) ALEX:(V.O.) Fucking pull it together. How hard can this be? Okay,(reading)Hold the tip of the condom with one hand to avoid leaving any air trapped inside because it could cause it to break, and unroll the condom all the way down to the bottom of the penis with the other hand. ALEX: What the fuck? A door is heard closing and Alex, without putting the condom on leaves the bathroom and goes back into his room to find that Rebecca is gone. ALEX: What the fuck? ALEX:(V.O.) Seriously, what the fuck? Alex looks about the room. He looks under the bed and in the closet. Determining that she left he lays down and goes to sleep.

INT. ALEX’S BEDROOM A YEAR PRIOR 7AM Giggling is heard ouside Alex’s door and he wakes up, walking over to his door he opens in to find Rebecca leaving chads room. Chad, dressed in his typical bro outfit has a smirk on his face. ALEX: Are you fucking joking me? CHAD: What? ALEX: You have a girlfriend, you asshole. CHAD: And? ALEX: Of two fucking years! Jesus. (he looks at Rebecca) And you! What the hell? REBECCA: You couldn’t get it on fast enough. (she looks to Chad) Thanks! (back to Alex) Maybe next time hun. Alex has a look of horror and disgust as the shot fades to the funeral home. INT FUNERAL HOME 11:20 AM Alex is still looking down at Chad. Donnie Franco approaches. DONNIE: I know son. I know how hard it must be for you. ALEX: Yeah DONNIE: It’s hard loosing the star of the football team.
