JAZZ YOU WAIT FOR CHELTENHAM The annual festival puts on the biggest acts in jazz, blues, soul and RnB as well as showcasing fresh talent BY JOEL CAMPBELL

M

USICAL h e a v y weights from across the jazz, soul and blues spectrum will once again descend on the Regency Cotswolds town of Cheltenham for its annual jazz festival. With the full programme still to be announced, the organisers have revealed the first wave of artists for this year’s event, which will feature a combination of international stars, jazz icons and up-and-coming talent. Taking place from May 2-7, Cheltenham Jazz Festival will welcome former David Bowie saxophonist Donny McCaslin for his only UK date this year, revered US pianist Jason Moran and his bandwagon trio, and Mercury-nominated Londonbased jazz outfit Dinosaur, with

new music from their highly anticipated second album ‘Wonder Trail’. These names join revered soul singer Randy Crawford in an exclusive UK show, spiritual jazz frontrunner Kamasi Washington, the first ever UK performance from four-time Grammywinning double bass luminary Christian McBride’s Big Band, and Grammy-nominated blues/ rock singersongwriter Beth Hart, who is set to captivate audiences with her new jazzinfused album ‘Fire on the Floor’. Cheltenham Jazz Festival is hosted in a tented festival village in the town centre’s picturesque Montpellier Gardens. The festival features a big top stage, jazz arena, free stage, and a food, drink and market area, as well as participating venues including the Town Hall, Parabola Arts Centre, Hotel du Vin and the Daffodil, a dynamic free fringe line-up, family programme, and latenight events around the town.

Explore legacies of Biafra in exhibition BY JOEL CAMPBELL A NEW exhibition, which looks at the legacy of the Nigerian Civil War, has opened at the Brunei Gallery, which is part of SOAS University of London. The multi-media exhibition features works predominantly from the artistic collective Nigeria Art Society UK, which will be displayed alongside archival materials on the Biafra war, oral narratives and a selection of short films. In an exploration of Britain and Biafra, the exhibition will showcase material from the personal archive of the late British-Nigerian writer Buchi Emecheta, which describes the experience of watching war unfold in her homeland

through the lens of the international media. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the war, it looks at the legacies of the British colonial divide-and-rule policy, global media coverage, ethnic tensions and distrust which contributed to the war. The show explores the on-going impact of war locally and globally, considering how one of the first civil wars in post-independence Africa has influenced the perception of the continent internationally, as well as reshaping the social and political structures in Nigeria. Admission is free and it’s open Tuesday to Saturday from now until March 24.
