Withering Looks LipService - Britain’s favourite literary lunatics, are back with their cult Brontë spoof Withering Looks. Specially reworked for the 200th anniversary year of Emily’s birth, the classic comic duo, Maggie Fox and Sue Ryding, just couldn’t resist the urge to dust off their crinolines, wear flattering bonnets and sit at rain-lashed windows in a pale and decorative manner. Don’t miss the chance to share in the silliness too! Withering Looks takes an “authentic” look at the lives and works of the Brontë sisters – well, two of them actually, Anne’s just popped out for a cup of sugar. Peopled with many of the characters we know and love, Maggie and Sue move effortlessly from frock to frock coat. Withering Looks won a Manchester Evening News Theatre Award and the Critics’ award for Comedy at the Edinburgh Festival. LipService recently won the Stage Door Foundation award for Excellence. “It’s a joy – very very funny” The Guardian

You’ve Got Dragons

My Dad, The Magician

Based on the book by Kathryn Cave Illustrated by Nick Maland

“Grab the rabbit, Tom, we’ve got to pack up.”

“Dragons come when you least expect it. You turn round…and they’re there.”

The year is 1991. Tom is 11 years old. His Dad is a magician and Tom is his assistant.

Lots of people get them; bad dreams, swirly tummy, feeling prickly. And sometimes they make you feel alone. So, what can a young child with a bad case of the dragons do?

A former policeman, laid off with a bad back now forced to spend his weekends dressing up and entertaining at children’s parties. A story of reinvention for an ordinary man whose greatest trick will be making sure there’s food on the family table.

A delightful tale of one child’s journey coming to terms with their dragons. With live, original music, this highly visual, sensitive production is a humorous and touching exploration of the dragons we all face.

Using handmade magic tricks, live music, cassette players, DJ skills, audience interaction and a rabbit called Horace, this nostalgically inventive show tells the story of the man behind the magician.

A treat for the whole family. And remember… No dragon is more powerful than YOU!

Tchaikovsky’s

Eugene Onegin Olivier award-winning OperaUpClose return to Harrogate Theatre with their new English version of Tchaikovsky’s sweeping Eugene Onegin. With a narrative that is both romantic and thoughtprovoking, the central character is the fiercely intelligent but naïve Tatyana, whose entanglement with Onegin results in a wiser, sadder but ultimately self-reliant heroine. This new chamber version will transpose the story of Tatyana’s sexual awakening to the early 1960s, a world on the cusp of the women’s liberation movement when new thinking fought against the old ways. Infatuation and self-restraint do battle in a well-tailored world of sleek suits and full skirts, with seasonal allusions to the snow-swept Russian landscape of the original.

You’ll also hear Barry Steele perform songs written by Roy Orbison, but never performed by him!

This is a coming-of-age story, a requiem for lost innocence and triumphant celebration of hard-won independence – told through some of the most glorious vocal music ever written.

This unmissable show will take you on a musical journey in time.

She not only stood up for workers’ rights and against oppression with selfless dedication, but with her steadfast resolve, she turned the dispute into a national movement for human rights and dignity inspiring future generations. “What you are running here is not a factory, it is a zoo. ‘Psychic’ Comedian

Steve sits THEATR comfortably E in his CLUB padded seat. His plane glides, tranquil and serene, high above the ocean. The passenger beside him grips the armrest, his hands clenched together.

It doesn’t matter what it is, Peter Antoniou has an answer for you. Part comedy, part mind reading, this show will leave you asking, is your mind safe?

BEST OF BE FESTIVAL

A GRAND TOUR OF BOUNDARY SMASHING EUROPEAN PERFORMANCE IN ONE EXHILARATING NIGHT Birmingham's genrebending European arts festival takes to the road and shines a light on the continent's diverse and emerging talent in theatre, dance and performance art. Through the evening three shows will be presented, and during the interval, why not treat yourself to a bit of supper with the cast and audience.

Légende Romain Teule (France/Portugal)

All 3 shows only £15 All 3 shows + supper* £20 *pre-booked tickets only

A performance lecture on the nature of language, Légende unpicks the different kinds of questions produced by words. Beginning with a fictional language of the birds, Romain Teule’s show probes the different possibilities to be found in words. Living and working between France and Portugal, Teule’s show was originally performed in Portuguese, his existential questions will now be posed in English. Uncovering the instances where words fail, and what powers they have, it’s a thoughtful show prompting re-evaluations about what things we take for granted.

André and Dorine

What Does Stuff Do?

Kulunka Teatro (Spain)

Robin Boon Dale (UK)

In a small room, the frantic tapping on a typewriter, is embellished daily with the notes of a cello. André and Dorine, an elderly couple who, like so many others, have fallen into a rut, forgetting what one day united them. An event, the illness, will be responsible for shaking the dust of their relationship, forcing them to remember who they were, to reconnect with who they are. Remember how they have loved, to continue loving.

Using innovative juggling, physical comedy, and almost-philosophy to guide you through Robin Dale’s mind and body of research. Featuring pouring, ping pong, and a motivational speech delivered by a man in swimming trunks, this is a charmingly rhetorical debut show. Please, suspend any scepticism about the value of the totally obvious. A recent graduate from Circomedia in Bristol, Robin has been training in object manipulation and physical theatre.

If I Say Jump

Last Resort

Betty lives in memories; she finds warmth and solace there, away from her widowed existence and empty house that was once full of life. Increasingly becoming detached from her reality Betty finds her memories begin to unravel, with no real grasp on reality and a memory that is slipping away, what has she got left?

Jenny’s a vicar. But she’s got problems. Her creepy exhusband keeps sending her flowers and won’t sign the divorce papers. The church hall is being renovated by a dodgy builder, who’s being investigated by the police. And her best friend Danny has turned up in the vestry with a gun.

Last Resort is an alternative future for Guantanamo Bay. The waterboarding has stopped, the noise has been turned down and the military base has been reclaimed as a holiday destination. You, the audience, are our holidaymakers. You will sit in a deckchair, you will get a rum cocktail on arrival and you will feel the sand between your toes. We will be your tour guides.

Through seamless use of mask, mime, puppetry and gesture, this one woman show told by Betty’s granddaughter takes you on a journey of love, life and loss. Tickets £10 (Conc. £8)

Danny has anger issues. He’s just had a fight with his best mate Benson. They’re in too deep and running out of options. So when he turns to the church, Jenny has to choose between doing the right thing or the legal thing. A bold and exhilarating tale of contemporary Britain, If I Say Jump is a show for anyone who has ever asked themselves “why did I just do that?”

Snarling through songs and snapping strings, they sang about changing the world…until they broke up. Our story finds them ten years later accidentally reunited in their old stomping ground. SEASON TICKET Thunder Road in association with Harrogate Theatre present

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea The world quakes in fear. A sea-monster is sinking warships in the mid-Atlantic. Their vessel capsized, Professor Aronnax (the most famous oceanographer in Europe) and Ned Land (King of Harpooners) find themselves adrift and lost on a storm-swept ocean. Rescued by the mysterious Captain Nemo and held captive aboard his fantastic ship the Nautilus, their perilous voyage begins. Jules Verne’s prophetic novel of sub-sea adventure precedes our own atomic-age as the technology of the Nautilus is put to ever-more destructive use by the dark genius of Captain Nemo. His quest? ‘To rid the world of all mankind.’ Caught in a race against time, Aronnax and Land must destroy the Nautilus before Nemo’s vision comes true. Following a sell-out production of The Invisible Man in 2017 Thunder Road once again brings daring and delight to another timeless cult classic, a cautionary tale of science, exploration, madness, and courage. From the TICKET awardwinning writer of Little Voice and Road, Jim Cartwright.

TUE 29-WED 30 MAY 7.45PM Publick Transport presents

We Are Brontë Morecambe and Wise meets David Lynch in this madcap reimagining of the myth, presented in Publick Transport’s playful style.

Set in a Northern Pub where the Landlord and Landlady’s cheery greeting and friendly banter barely disguise their contempt for each other. They met outside the pub when they were kids and now they own the place.

Taking the real and fictitious worlds of Yorkshire’s literary siblings as their inspiration, two performers combine physical theatre with anarchic comedy to show not only gothic themes of love, madness and revenge, but also themselves.

During the course of the evening assorted customers pass through including a little boy left by his father, an event that triggers a move towards a fragile reconciliation between the pub couple as their secret tragedy, comes to a head after drinking-up time.

Expect wind, spooky houses and really bad coughs. Part play, part enquiry into the act of putting on a play, this promises to be no ordinary Brontë adaptation.
