OUR STORY Harrogate Theatre was built in 1900 and is run today by Harrogate (White Rose) Theatre Trust Ltd, a registered charity. The Theatre is built over five floors with two performance spaces: a typical late Victorian proscenium arch auditorium and a modern black box studio space, where we produce and present theatre, dance, music and comedy. It is also home to a number of community groups that regularly perform musicals and plays throughout the year. The Harrogate Theatre Team programmes for the Royal Hall and Harrogate Convention Centre as well, allowing for internationally renowned companies and artists to be part of the eclectic artistic programme. But we’re not just about fantastic shows, we also run fun activities from Hive; a creative space for the young people and our fabulous Scenic Services team build sets for high profile touring shows from a warehouse in Starbeck. Our theatre producer works with hand-picked associate artists to progress their careers and our associate director works with touring companies to develop their work and leads the whole team on producing Harrogate Theatre’s magical family pantomime! Look out for our magazine, coming out later this year, for more information about our story.

Winner of the 1997 Olivier Award for Best New Play, Conor McPherson’s chilling, modern classic The Weir embarks on a UK tour this autumn to mark its 20th anniversary year. In a small Irish town, the locals exchange stories round the crackling fire of Brendan’s pub, to while away the hours one stormy night. As the beer and whisky flows, the arrival of a young stranger, haunted by a secret from her past, turns the tales of folklore into something more unsettling. One story, however, is more chilling and more real than any of them could have ever imagined. A shadowy tale delving into the dark corners of human lives, The Weir is a co-production between English Touring Theatre (French Without Tears / winners of 2016 UK Theatre Awards’ Best Touring Production for The Herbal Bed) and Mercury Theatre Colchester. “AS LONG AS YOU’RE ALIVE THAT’S ALL THAT MATTERS” Best friends Rita and Sue get a lift home from married Bob after babysitting his kids. When he takes the scenic route and offers them a bit of fun, the three start a fling they each think they control. Andrea Dunbar’s semi-autobiographical play was written in 1982 when she was just 19. It’s a vivid portrait of girls caught between brutal childhood and an unpromising future, hungry for adult adventure. Told with wicked humour, startling insight and a great ear for dialogue, Rita, Sue and Bob Too famously became a cult film. James Acaster: Classic Scrapes Book Tour

OperaUpClose presents

James Acaster is releasing his first ever book this year, James Acaster’s Classic Scrapes, which is going to be a collection of self-deprecating anecdotes about scrapes James has gotten himself into over the years; famed from the slot of the same name on Josh Widdicombe’s XFM radio show.

Following their hugely popular English language re-imaginings of La Bohème and Don Giovanni, OperaUpClose take on Mozart’s classic The Magic Flute, re-inventing the opera in fabulous new robes for the era of Trump and recessions.

8pm

Acaster, who has been nominated for the Edinburgh Comedy Award five times in a row, said: ‘I have lived an extremely blessed life save for enough awful/stupid experiences to fill a book with and so I thought it only fair to fill a book with them.’

7:30pm

The Magic Flute

Invited behind the velvet rope at London’s most exclusive club, Tamino doesn’t have time to stop for beggars, paparazzi, or even his girlfriend Pamina. Going to bed after a blazing row later that night, this ordinary couple relive the events and encounters of the evening in dreams made extraordinary by the lateness of the hour, their befuddled senses, and a touch of magic. “OperaUpClose are leading an artistic revolution”

Come along and see him read sneak peeks from the book.

All or Nothing The Mod Musical

Written by Carol Harrison In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class-ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working-class free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas. The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘FACE’. The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat clothes obsessed and street-wise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to Rhythm ‘n’ Blues. This quintessentially British ‘Mod’ Musical celebrates the unique sound of the iconic ‘60s Mod band, The Small Faces. Featuring the music of the Small Faces, including an arsenal of brilliant hits like Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Lazy Sunday, Tin Soldier, Sha La La La Lee, Itchycoo Park and of course All or Nothing. Stones in his Pockets

Marching on Embers

A quiet Irish village community is turned upside down with the arrival of a Hollywood film crew, looking for the ‘real’ Ireland. As the days pass, cultures clash with dire consequences, but through all adversity the human spirit still prevails.

One family. One cause. Two paths…

Two actors play all of the characters in this modern tragi-comedy.

With a fragile peace hanging over their community, the rifts of the past begin to tear apart the foundations of a prominent Republican family when one of them re-joins the struggle against ‘the age old enemy of the Irish people’. Why are so many young men seduced by the pull of violent struggle? Why are female voices so often stifled in the midst of struggle? Marching on Embers tells the story of radicalisation, the allure of violence and the toxic mix of power and masculinity against the backdrop of a post-Brexit fractured Northern Ireland.

Contains some strong language. Tickets £12

We are the Lions, Mr Manager! We are the Lions, Mr. Manager! is the remarkable story of Jayaben Desai the inspirational leader of the 1976-78 Grunwick Film Processing Factory Strike. Jayaben was recently amongst the women who have had the biggest impact on women’s lives over the past 70 years as part of the Radio 4 Women’s Hour Power List. She brought the issue of workplace exploitation and racism to the fore, challenged the perception of Asian women being inherently passive and docile, whilst having the measure of the most brutish of her managers, telling them: “What you are running here is not a factory, it is a zoo. But in a zoo there are many types of animals. Some are monkeys who dance on your fingertips, others are lions who can bite your head off. We are the lions, Mr. Manager!” She not only stood up for workers’ rights and against oppression with selfless dedication, but with her steadfast resolve, she turned the dispute into a national movement for human rights and dignity inspiring future generations. “...a company making a name for delivering vivid, politically committed theatre” The Observer
