Ystad THE YSTAD HARBOUR CAN BE SEEN AS AN ISSUE OF DISRUPTION. THE CURRENT HARBOUR IS CONSIDERING AN EYESORE, OR AT BEST, AN UNIDENTIFIABLE PART OF

YSTAD FOR ALL, DESPITE BEING A WATERFRONT AREA. HENCE, IT CAN BE SEEN IN A WAY AS A DISRUPTION TO

THE LIFE OF YSTAD. FOR THIS STRATEGY, INSTEAD OF TRYING TO ERASE ALL TRACES OF DISRUPTIONS, MY PROJECT SEEKS TO EVALUATE AND PLAY UPON WHAT

CAN BE SEEN AS A NEGATIVE, AND INSTEAD TURNING IT TO A POSITIVE. DISRUPTIONS,

WHEN

DECONSTRUCTED,

REFERS

TO PAUSES IN LIFE, WHICH FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE, COULD MEAN A MOMENT OF BREVITY.

FROM INVESTIGATIONS OF SITE AND INTERVIEWS OF THE LOCALS, THE MAIN ISSUE OF THE YSTAD HARBOUR APPEARS TO BE A TALE OF BARRIERS AND INCENTIVES

WHERE THE TRAIN LINE AND FENCED OFF

SPACES IMPEDE MOBILITY, THE HARD WATER EDGE AND GRAIN AS AN INDUSTRIAL SITE ALSO

DISTURB THE PERCEIVED CHARM – OR RATHER LACK THEREOF - OF THE HARBOUR.

“I DID NOT REALISE THAT THE OCEAN WAS SO CLOSE AS I HAD ONLY SEEN THE TOP OF THE BOATS.” THE STRATEGY EMPLOYED HINGES ON THE MOBILITY

NETWORK CREATED. SAID NETWORK WAS IMPLEMENTED

ON THE SITE WITH RESPECT TO THE EXISTING HARBOUR GRAIN, AS WELL AS TO STRENGTHEN EXISTING CONNECTIONS ACROSS THE TRAIN LINE WHILE WALKWAYS OVER THE WATER BREAK UP THE CURRENTLY DETACHED WATER EDGE.

ARISES

FROM A PERCEIVED BOUNDARY BETWEEN THE STIGMATIZED AND STIGMATIZER, DUE TO AN

INHERENT DISJUNCT BETWEEN THE PUBLIC AND THE COLUMBARIUM USERS. COLUMBARIUMS ARE MOSTLY SEQUESTERED AWAY WITHIN THICKETS OF GREENERY OR DESIGNED TO BLEND IN WITH

RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS. AS SUCH, WITH SUCH

SPACES KEPT OUT OF THE MIND OF THE PUBLIC, THEY LOSE UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION FOR

SUCH

SPACES,

FORMING

STIGMATIZED PERCEPTION OF SAID SPACES.

A

HENCE, THIS PROJECT SEEKS TO EXPLORE THE BUILDING AS A LIMINAL LINE, WHERE

THE PUBLIC PATH AND THE COLUMBARIUM SPACES ARE PARALLEL, BUT CONVERGES AT

MEANINGFUL POINTS. THE BUILDING PROPOSES THE COLUMBARIUM AS A JUNCTURE BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE; AND GRIEF AND JOY.

THE COLUMBARIUM

THIS COLUMBARIUM OFFERS AN ALTERNATIVE TO ASH STORAGE: WHERE ASH IS INSTEAD USED AS FERTILIZER FOR A CHOSEN POTTED PLANT. THE RESULT IS A GARDEN, REFLECTING A CELEBRATION OF LIFE IN DEATH.

Sharing Cities THE AIM OF THIS STUDIO WAS TO CREATE AN ECOSYSTEM FOR A SHARING COMMUNITY AS A GROUP, TO EACH STUDENT DEVELOPS IN DETAIL ONE SYSTEM.

A sharing lifestyle for young THE LIFESTYLE SYSTEM AIMS TO DESIGN FOR A NEW SHARING COMMUNITY OF YOUNG SO AS TO DIRECTLY ADDRESS THE RESIDENTIAL VACUUM OF THE SITE.

THE SHARING SYSTEM OF HOUSING UNITS DEALS WITH A PARTICIPATORY APPROACH

OF CATERING FOR HOUSING DEMANDS, TO PROVIDE FOR A RANGE OF LIFESTYLES IN BOTH THE DEGREE OF SHARING AND

THE OPTION OF A WORK-LIVE LIFESTYLE. HENCE, A PLUG-IN TYPOLOGY IS EMPLOYED

FOR INDIVIDUAL UNITS, SHARED CORES & SHARED WORKSPACES (AS SEEN FIT).

A FLEXIBILITY OF 3 TYPOLOGIES IS PROVIDED, WITH THE STANDARD TYPOLOGY SERVING AS A BLANK SLATE FOR ANY FURTHER MODIFICATIONS. WITH THE INDIVIDUAL UNITS, ONE HAS THE OPTION TO IMMEDIATELY EMPLOY AN EXTENDED UNIT, OR TO POSSIBLY EXTEND THE BASIC UNIT IN THE FUTURE. THIS IS IN ORDER TO CATER TO DIFFERENT SIZED HOUSEHOLDS & FOR AGING-INPLACE.

EACH INDIVIDUAL UNIT IS TO BE ORDERED ACCORDING TO THE OWNER’S CHOICE, WHILE THE SHARED CORE AND SHARED WORKSPACES ARE DECIDED BY THE RELEVANT COMMUNITY.

H U M A N N AT U R E THIS IS A PROJECT SUBMITTED FOR THE 46TH NISSHIN

KOGYO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN COMPETITION TITLED

“LIVING UPON NATURE”. WE ARE CURRENTLY ASKED

ABOUT HOW TO DEFINE “NATURE”. FOR INSTANCE,

“ANTHROPOCENE”MEANS A NEW STRATUM FORMED

BY THE ACTIVITY OF MANKIND WHICH HAS A SIGNIFICANT INFLUENCE ON THE GLOBAL ENVIRONMENT, SUCH AS

MASSIVE EMISSIONS OF CARBON DIOXIDE AND LARGESCALE RECLAMATION. IT HAS BEEN ADVOCATED AS A GEOLOGICAL TIME AFTER THE HOLOCENE. HOW

SHOULD WE LIVE ON SUCH AN UNSTABLE EARTH WHICH IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO HUMAN INFLUENCE?

THIS PROJECT WAS AN ATTEMPT TO REDEFINE OUR DEFINITION OF WHAT NATURE IS AND HOW WE MIGHT

RELATE TO FORCES OF ‘NATURE’ IN A NEW WAY BEYOND OUR CURRENTLY HELD PRESUMPTIONS.

THIS PROJECT IS AN ARCHITECTURAL INVESTIGATION OF THE OPENING UP OF PRODUCTION PROCESSES,

INTERACTIVE FOOD SPACES AND INFILLING FOR A FUTURE OBSOLETE ARCHITECTURE THROUGH AN EXPLORATION OF MEAT.

MEAT PRODUCTION HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY DIVORCED FROM THE CITY AND URBAN

AS SUCH, THE CONSUMER BEGINS TO PURSUE FOOD THAT THEY CAN VERIFY, RESULTI

MOVEMENT. AS SEEN WITH THE SUDDEN POPULARITY AND SUCCESS OF FAKE MEAT PROD

ALSO SHOWS THAT FAKE MEAT HAS BECOME A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE TO REAL MEAT. WHA

HOWEVER, JUST AS THE PUSH FOR INCREASING TRANSPARENCY IN THE FOOD INDUST

(BUYING, EATING, ETC), THE FAKE MEAT INDUSTRY SIMILARLY NEEDS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE

N NODES, THEREBY DIVORCING HUMANS FROM THE SOURCE OF THEIR FOOD, THE QUALITY OF FOOD BEGINS TO BE QUESTIONED.

ING IN SPACES THAT MARRIES PRODUCTION AND THE PUBLIC. THIS EXTENDS BEYOND ARCHITECTURE TO THE FARM TO TABLE

DUCTS IN 2019, THERE IS NOT ONLY A CUSTOMER DEMAND FOR FAKE MEAT OVER THE REAL MEAT THAT COMES FROM ANIMALS, BUT

AT THIS MEANS IS THAT THERE IS NOW A REDEFINITION OF THE MEAT MAKING PROCESS AND HENCE, SPACES THAT HAVE ARISEN

HIFT WILL NEED TO UPDATE THEMSELVES OR RISK BECOMING OBSOLETE.

TRY HAVE RESULTED IN TYPOLOGIES PREDICATED ON PAIRING PARTS OF THE PRODUCTION PROCESS WITH THE CONSUMPTION

E OF ITS FARM TO TABLE MESSAGING TO TRANSLATE INTO SPACES THAT CELEBRATE THE FAKE MEAT JUST AS MUCH AS TRADITIONAL

REAL MEAT. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE IS CURRENTLY A GAP IN BETWEEN THE GRAPHICAL ADVERTISING OF THE FAKE MEAT AND THE

HEAVILY RELIES ON TRANSPARENCY OF ITS PROCESS AND COMPARISONS TO REAL MEAT TO SELL TO ITS CUSTOMERS THE IDEA OF

THE TYPOLOGY OF FACTORIES OR INDUSTRIAL LABORATORIES. HENCE, THIS THESIS AIMS TO DESIGN A PRODUCTION FACILITY FOR

EAT AND FARM-TO-TABLE MESSAGING.

IN ORDER TO TRANSLATE THE MESSAGINGS OF FAKE MEAT THAT HAVE IN SO FAR BEEN SEQUESTERED TO ONLINE ADVERTISING, THE PROJECT WILL TAKE ON THE PREMISE OF EXPANDING UPON THE ONLY EXISTING PIG ABATTOIR IN

SINGAPORE SITUATED AT JURONG, WHEREBY THE COMPANY WILL SEEK TO SLOWLY TRANSITION INTO A FAKE MEAT

PRODUCER AND HENCE, UTILISE THE SOON-TO-BE OBSOLETE ABATTOIR AS A TOOL FOR PROMOTING THE FAKE MEAT TO ITS VISITORS. 4 POINTS OF COLLISIONS BETWEEN THE VISITOR, THE FAKE MEAT PRODUCTION PROCESS AND THE

REAL MEAT PRODUCTION PROCESS WAS IDENTIFIED, FROM WHICH THE SPACES WERE THEN EXPLORED THROUGH CURATORIAL DIAGRAMS.

THE FOUR SPACES OF COLLISION OCCUR AS ONE CIRCLES THROUGH THE BUILDING TO CLIMB TO THE FINAL SPACE OF DINING. THE BUILDING

ITSELF SITS IN BETWEEN THE EXISTING BUILDINGS ON SITE, WHERE THE REAL MEAT PRODUCTION IS SPLIT INTO TWO BUILDINGS ACROSS THE

ROAD OF EACH OTHER. HENCE THE INTERVENTION ACTS AS A SPINAL GLUE FOR THE FINAL INTERGRATED BUILDING.

PIGS VS PLANTS FARM TO TABLE

A COMMERCIALISATION OF THE ‘LIVE’ PART OF THE PROCESS, FRAMED THROUGH LANDSCAPE AND INTERACTIVITY WITH THE LIVING INGREDIENTS.

THE COMMERCIALISATION OF PLANT BASED MEATS IS SQUARED SOLELY ON ITS DIFFERENCE OF BEING MADE FROM PLANTS. THE VISITOR FIRST CONFRONTS THIS AS INDUSTRIAL LINED PIGS ARE KEPT IN THE ‘BELOW SPACE’, AND THE SOY PLANTS ARE AFFORDED BOTH SUNLIGHT AND 24 HOUR MAINTAINANCE, BOTH TYPICALLY ASSOCIATED WITH HEALTHEIR PRODUCE. BOTH ARE DELIBERATELY KEPT IN EFFICIENT LAYOUTS TO HIGHLIGHT NOT JUST THE SUFFERING OF PIGS, BUT ALSO THE EASIER MAINTENANCE OF PLANTS OVER ANIMALS.

FOOD IS INFORMATION

HEALTH & ENVIRONMENTALISM ARE THE COMPARISONS AT THE FOREFRONT. PROCESSES ARE FRAMED THROUGH A COMPARISON OF RESOURCE EFFICIENCY & CUSTOMISABILITY ANOTHER COMPARISON OF THE FAKE AND REAL MEAT IS THE BENEFITS AFFORDED TO THE CONSUMER IN TERMS OF ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS, RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND HEALTH. HENCE, THE PAIRING OF THE WASTE DISPOSAL OF THE REAL MEAT PROCESS WITH THE ‘USE ONLY WHAT YOU NEED’ FLEXIBILITY OF MIXING IN THE FAKE MEAT PROCESS ALLOWS FOR THIS MESSAGING TO COME THROUGH.

WITH CONCERNS FOR HEALTH ALSO AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE CONVERSATION, THE FLEXIBILITY OF THE FAKE MEAT IN CATERING TO EACH CUSTOMER CAN BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF WHERE FOR EXAMPLE, A DEMAND FOR LESS OIL COULD BE CATERED TO (JUST AS THERE IS LEAN AND FATTY PORK)

HENCE, THE PAIRING WITH A THIRD SPACE OF A SHARED KITCHEN IS UTILISED TO CATER TO FOOD ENTHUSIASTS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN KNOWING HOW TO MAKE BETTER FOOD NOT JUST FOR FAKE MEAT, BUT ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO COOKING AS WELL.

MEATINESS THROUGH SELF-VERIFICATION

PRODUCTION SPACES THAT ALLOW FOR THE VERIFICATION OF MEAT PAIRED WITH THE SPACES FOR CONSUMPTION (AKA SELLING & EATING)

AS BUTCHERS ARE HELD AS A MARKER FOR VERIFYING MEATS, THE RESEACHERS IN THIS NEW MEAT PRODUCTION PLANT TAKES OVER THIS ROLE AS THEY ARE CONSTANTLY WORKING TO IMPROVE THE PRODUCTION PROCESS. NEW TEST BATCHES OF MEAT CAN BE INQUIRED OVER THE COUNTER. THIS IS PIT IN CONTRAST TO THE AUCTION SPACE FOR REAL MEAT (AND PERIPHERALLY THE MEAT CUTTING SPACE). THE PRIMARY TARGET USER GROUP OF F&B OWNERS OR EXTERNAL CHEFS LOOKING TO BUY FRESH OR QUALITY CUTS OF REAL MEAT ON SITE WILL THEN BE OPENED UP TO THE OPTION OF TESTING OUT ANY NEW BATCH OF FAKE MEAT.

MEATINESS THROUGH SELF-VERIFICATION

PRODUCTION SPACES THAT ALLOW FOR THE VERIFICATION OF MEAT PAIRED WITH THE SPACES FOR CONSUMPTION (AKA SELLING & EATING)

JUST AS FARM TO TABLE ESTABLISHMENTS HAVE ENCOURAGED A CONNECTION BETWEEN HUMAN AND FOOD THROUGH INTERACTIVITY INTEGRATED INTO THE DINING LEVEL, THE RESTAURANT ENCOURAGES ITS CUSTOMERS TO COOK THEIR OWN MEAT, OR AT LEAST BE MORE INVOLVED WITH THE COOKING PROCESS BY ALLOWING SPECIAL REQUESTS TO THE CHEF. THE POROSITY BETWEEN THE R&D LABS, THE COMMERCIAL KITCHEN AND THE DINING SPACE THEREBY ALLOWS FOR CUSTOMERS, CHEFS AND RESEARCHERS TO HAVE A CONTINUOUS FEEDBACK ON IMPROVING THE RECIPE NOT JUST AT THE COOK, BUT ALSO AT THE CONSTRUCTION OF MEAT ITSELF.
