untv Historical Event

At UNTV, public service is a commitment that must be fulfilled even in the face of extreme danger. This has been demonstrated in two historic events by the men and women of UNTV who have put their lives on the line or made the supreme sacrifice to deliver the truth to the Filipino public. Ortigas Shoot Out

Public Service: • Firetruck • Mass Bloodletting

2012

On November 7, 2005, the UNTV News and Public Affairs Reportorial Team exclusively captured a chilling video footage of a bloody encounter between three suspected carjackers and the operatives of Traffic Management Group (TMG)-Task Force Limbas. Video footages of UNTV were aired on national television by all major networks.

Special Event: • Unity Run • Sing N’ Shoot

Maguindanao Massacre Public Service: • UNTV Radio La Verdad 1350 • UNTV Mobile Radio Booth • Manibela Academy

On November 23, 2009, four UNTV employees based in UNTV’s General Santos City office were among those abducted and killed in election-related violence now known as the infamous Maguindanao massacre, which left 57 people dead. Only UNTV attempted to provide the TV coverage of the horrific event, which resulted to the brutal killing of four of our news production personnel. Truly it was the “blackest day in Philippine journalism.”

LIBRENG SAKAY

Rarely do we find ‘free’ stuff these days that commuters were rightfully shocked the first time UNTV announced its offer to give our citizens a free bus ride. One bus grew into two, and soon, it also progressed into free jeepney rides and free tickets to ride the MRT for senior citizens — as well as going provincial (Libreng Sakay sa Lantsa) and international (Libreng Sakay sa Eroplano’for OFW’s).

12

FREE MEDICAL SERVICES Kuya Daniel’s plea expressing the difference it would make if doctors lent their expertise to the poor for just one day pulled on the heartstrings of many from the medical industry. This gave rise to ‘Clinic ni Kuya’ where consultations and other services (even an ambulance for emergencies) can be availed for free, from pediatrics and general medicine to optometry and dental. They also travel on medical missions to far-flung provinces to give indigents better health care access.

MASS BLOOD DONATION With the belief that blood helps save lives, UNTV joins forces with the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) and the Ang Dating Daan group in quarterly blood donation drives. These efforts to give blood to the local Red Cross were recognized by the Department of Health and PNRC for generating massive amounts of blood bags in a day.

FREE legal SERVICES Being a broadcaster opened Kuya Daniel’s eyes to the desperate plight of the less fortunate who cannot afford expensive attorney’s fees and end up languishing in jail with no way to pay bail and their cases gathering dust. Volunteer lawyers responded to this plea and practiced their profession thoroughly as well in ‘Law Center ni Kuya’ where, unlike others, they fully assist cases from day one up to the reading of the verdict.

FREE EDUCATION ‘No strings attached’ may best describe the free education program at the La Verdad Christian College. Unlike others, it is the first private college in the country that accepts willing students who do not necessarily have high weighted average grades. Furthermore, unlike in other scholarships, they offer even free books, free uniforms, free meals and transportation allowance. UNTV also supported the Department of Education’s call for classrooms and computer laboratories.

TRANSIENT HOME This temporary home for people in need can be easily seen right at the heart of EDSA. The first in the Philippines to offer comfortable beds and warm meals free of charge, US social work embodied in the movie “Pursuit of Happiness” served as the impetus for this shelter. Some of the guests who come in for a stay and benefit from this home are those in need of medical assistance, financially distressed, victims of illegal recruiters, victims of physical and sexual abuse, people with no means of outright transportation to go back to their province and other similar cases. Length of stay for guests depends on the nature of problem or case. Consultation with licensed Social Workers is also a part of the Transient Home’s services.

TULONG MUNA BAGO BALITA - KUYA DANIEL RAZON, Mr. Public Service

Increasing reports where sensationalism is the headline and reporters were more concerned with ratings than lives alarmed Kuya Daniel for a long time. It finally led him to setup UNTV’s News and Rescue Command Center (similar to US 911) — where correspondents not only in NCR but also in different regions who underwent rescue and first aid training were taught to assist first before reporting.

Kahit Isang Araw Lang is Kuya Daniel Razon’s advocacy that motivates people to serve others using their capabilities and professional skills. With this advocacy in mind, innovative free services for the public were launched to encourage people to pitch in and make a better change in just one day.

Projects Isang Araw Lang Para Sa Kalikasan

Test Broadcast A Cry for Freedom held at the biggest dome in Southeast Asia, the Araneta Coliseum, the benefit concert was a tribute to journalists and broadcasters who have been victims of extrajudicial killings. Not only were valiant journalists hailed for their selfless service, but the proceeds went to the raising of funds for the families of our slain heroes. The children of the deceased journalists were granted scholarships and seed money for the family to start a business of their own.

Hands That Feed To raise funding for the feeding programs in Payatas and Baseco Compound, a three-day art exhibit was held at the Pan Pacific Hotel and Resorts in Malate, Manila featuring photography and multimedia art. It was graced by renowned names in the local art scene and the creative industry as well as up-coming artists.

Looking Beyond The positive reception to the first exhibit gave birth to another, this time with Daniel Razon’s nature photography as the highlight (and was said to have outsold the previous as well). Set at the Edsa Shangrila’s Garden Ballroom, it was quite a timely endeavor since the proceeds were donated to the founding of first ever free transient home in the Philippines. Looking beyond art exhibit wishes the viewers to realize that beyond every picture they bought is a smiling orphan, a renewed hope for the homeless, an inspiration to poverty-laden families who all benefitted from the proceeds of the project.

Takbo Para sa Libreng Kolehiyo It began from the need to open a Caloocan branch of the La Verdad Christian College which will offer free full scholarships in Broadcasting and Nursing – and ended with a massive fun ‘marathon’ run that brought together 50,000 runners at the SM Mall of Asia. All in one day.

Hoopsters Meet the Legends Extending the scope of the free education advocacy, “Kahit Isang Araw Lang” enters this time into the world of local basketball and invites the legendary players of the PBA – Atoy Co, Philip Cezar, Bogs Adornado, Codiñera, Hizon, Freddie Hubalde, and more. Held at the Cuneta Astrodome, they executed signature moves in a friendly exhibition match with ‘Kuya’ Daniel Razon and his homegrown team as rivals, amidst a jam-packed sports-crazy crowd. Add-A-Tree Being one of Earth’s life-support systems, trees played the major role in UNTV’s ADD-A-TREE project for the advocacy Isang Araw Lang Para sa Kalikasan (One Day for the Environment). This global green effort started off by planting 50,000 fruit-bearing seedlings last October 10, 2010.

BMPI CHAIRMAN AND CEO

Kuya Daniel Razon: Public Service PERSONIFIED Broadcast Journalist. TV and Radio News Anchor. TV Program Host. TV and Film Director, Photographer. Recording artist. Martial Arts expert. Sportsman. And recently, a Doctor of the Humanities, honoris causa. Awards of Excellence in broadcasting. He has won them all. With so many awards tucked under his belt, he has nothing to prove anymore. Garnering awards and a track record as a trail-blazer in the delivery of public service in broadcasting have now become a matter of fact in Kuya Daniel’s phenomenal career. But more than all these public accolades what is most fulfilling to him are still the little unreported things he does that make a big difference for the ordinary Filipino. Such as consoling an old woman wearied down by life’s difficulties, wading through knee deep waters with a little boy on his back towards safer ground. “Tulong muna bago balita” is the essence of his belief. He would rather provide assistance first even if unheralded rather than do nothing while someone is in agony just to out-scoop others. That’s because helping others is in his

blood. Born in the province of Bulacan, Philippines, Daniel Razon was reared in a closely-knit, religious family. Taught to read at an early age, he was reciting poems and Biblical verses at the age of three before the Congregation in which his family is a part of. As a child, he wanted to be a medical doctor. But gifted with a good voice, combined with his charm and exposure to public speaking at a young age, he instead found himself veering towards broadcasting, prodded by his uncle Bro. Eli Soriano, spiritual leader of the Church of God International, so he could help the Church in propagating the word of God. While his family could financially support him in his studies, Daniel took the long route to support his studies and have some income to be given to those who are in need of help. Taxi driving, selling merchandise, and more — all these Daniel tried without hesitation. A year after the EDSA Revolution of 1986, Daniel finished his Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications, Major in Broadcasting at the Philippines’ Centro Escolar University. Even while just starting in college, he had his

task as top honcho is back-breaking enough, he still manages to host, produce, and direct TV programs for the Station. Among them are the daily morning news magazine show, “Good Morning Kuya!” the primetime news program, “Ito Ang Balita,” and the public affairs shows “Get It Straight with Daniel Razon,” “Munting Pangarap” and “Manibela.” No time is wasted for “Kuya Daniel” as he is known at UNTV because in between meetings and shows, he indulges in photography, does his martial arts regimen, composes and records songs for his albums, and, wow! directs indie films. Multi-talented? Renaissance man? Maybe it was deemed to be. God has given him these many gifts because he has a giving heart. He maybe known as “a man for others” but for the ordinary Filipinos who go to “Clinic ni Kuya” to get free medical treatment, or get a free ride on “Libreng Sakay ni Kuya” or get a job through “Job Fair ni Kuya,” Daniel S. Razon is simply “Mr. Public Service.”

first taste of television work by directing a talk show on Channel 13 in the Philippines. Through perseverance and patience, his career followed an upward path from a disc jockey to being a station manager until he broke into television, Channel 4 then to ABS-CBN to GMA 7 and finally now as the head honcho and the face of UNTV. Who could forget his mellifluous, reassuring voice and soothing presence carrying the moniker “Kaka” as anchor of such Radio and TV programs as “Gising Pilipinas,” “Dakila Ka Pinoy,”, “Compañero Y Compañera,” “Usapang de Kampanilya,” “Pulso Aksyon Balita,” “Hoy Gising,” and “Pasada Sais Trenta” “Kamusta Kabayan” program of ABS-CBN International’s The Filipino Channel (TFC) and as a pinch-hitter in “TV Patrol,” and “TV Patrol World. And later on in GMA’s “Unang Hirit,”and “Frontpage” and “Saksi.” Then as the door of opportunities to rise further up the major TV networks opened even wider, he quit to commit himself to the challenging mission to prove that a full-fledged TV channel devoted to public service is possible. That was 8 years ago and he has made good on that commitment. Today, he serves as Chairman and CEO of Breakthrough and Milestones Productions International Inc., UNTV’s operation arm. Even if the
