Maeve Dear Maeve, I’m really proud of you. Congratulations on starting the journey toward getting out of debt and gaining control of your money! Honestly, either way is fine. The point is to get rid of them, and stop using the stupid things. I like the idea, and the finality, of going ahead and closing the accounts and cutting up the cards. Personal finance is 80 percent behavior. Getting credit cards—and credit card debt— out of your life is a great first step in really learning to behave with your money. Remember, you don’t build wealth or save money by using credit cards. And you’re naïve if you think you’re going to play around with a multi-billion-dollar industry and beat them at their own game. The only way to win against credit card companies is by refusing to play around with them! —Dave

Steve Dear Steve, I think that’s a great idea! You can include the extra check in a separate envelope with the regular payment. In addition, write “principal only” in big, bold letters on the extra envelope and on the extra check. Make sure to also include the account number in the notation line at the bottom. Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be much less likely to run into problems as result of someone at the bank not paying attention. Some companies use payment booklets that have a box specifically for entering any amount you want applied directly to the principal. See if this is available to you, as well. Regardless, make sure you keep an accurate, written record of the monthly and overall amounts you’re designating as “principal only.” Great question, Steve! —Dave

Houston was ranked number one most diverse city in the United States by WalletHub. According to the U.S. Census 2000, the racial makeup of the city was 49.3% White 25.3% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 5.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 16.5% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races; additionally, 37% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race. Since the 1990 Census, Houston's population has become majorityminority. The largest foreign languages spoken in Houston include: • Spanish and Spanish creole (679,292 speakers) • Vietnamese (26,125 speakers) • Chinese (24,234 speakers) • African indigenous languages (11,603 speakers) • Urdu of Pakistan (10,669 speakers). Percentages of the non-English groups who said that they spoke English at least "very well" include 42% of the Spanish speakers, 32% of the Vietnamese speakers, 49% of the Chinese speakers, 72% of the speakers of indigenous African languages, and 70% of the speakers of Urdu. As of 2015, about 40% of Harris County residents spoke languages other than English. Being bilingual has many well-documented benefits. Bilingual students have an advantage when studying additional languages, show better performance in multi-tasking and have a greater attention span. But the benefits do not end at graduation, nor are they limited to watching movies without subtitles. Speaking two languages can double your market value when searching for a job. While there are endless opportunities for bilingual applicants, there are specific jobs that cater particularly well to bilingual people:
Call Center, Sales & Customer Support Most major companies have a phone based or online customer support department to assist customers with their inevitable problems and complaints. If you have ever called a help line and been frustrated by the operator who clearly has little to no understanding of your native language you can easily see why bilingual phone operators are a valuable asset to companies in this area. Call Center jobs are ideal for recent graduates or job seekers with gaps in their education or experience because they usually have paid on-the-job training. The only skill an applicant needs when applying is a cheerful disposition and the ability to communicate effectively over the phone. In person customer service positions are invaluable at many locations. Splashtown needs someone who can make announcements in Spanish when a child gets separated from their parent and doesn't speak English. HEB needs someone who can help a customer return an item. The DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) needs VOL. 24 ISSUE 1189
driving test proctors that can give driving instruction in Spanish.
Translators - Verbal & Writ ten According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the demand for interpreters and translators is growing at a much faster rate than average. They expect by 2020 that the demand for translators will increase by 42%. Translators also make an average salary of $42,000 per year! Look on the back of your shampoo bottle and you will probably see at least two languages displayed. Warning labels, public signage, and product instructions come in as many languages as possible if the company wants to widen their customer base. There are more documents needing translations than can possibly be done by current translators, therefore there are abundant openings that pay well and often offer work-from-home remote opportunities or flexible hours. This makes translation positions ideal for stay-at-home parents, part-time students, retirees, and other people who need an income but need a more flexible work week. The downside is that translation work is often freelance, and as such is not as predictable or reliable as other employment. Houston is home to lots of companies that do business with other countries. Many of them even have factories or shops in other countries, and need to hire local workers in those areas. Human Resource Specialists that speak more than one language are able to fill positions more effectively in foreign and domestic markets particularly for companies that hire workers for manufacturing or manual labor. They make an average of $52,000 per year! Verbal translators are usually needed for in-person jobs, and are more likely to be full-time. Openings include: • Business translators for international meetings. • Court translators for immigration hearings and asylum cases.
