Updated Resume Tips For Older Workers By Marilyn Katz

Many older workers have a tough time finding jobs right now. There are many reasons for this, but I think a lot of older job searchers could benefit from learning some updated job search tips. For example, most of us older folks got our resume templates years ago, and we never really updated them. Yet, hiring managers and recruiters seem to spend less time on each document than they ever did before. How can you get noticed?

Recruiters And Hiring Managers Have Shorter Attention Spans Than You Think! While recruiters say they spend five minutes on each resume, recent studies have demonstrated that they really may only spend five seconds on the majority of documents. How can you get your own document set aside in a "keeper" file for further inspection? You need to ask yourself this question if you post your document online, email it, or send it in the mail. Think about it. Your resume is really a type of sales letter. The new rules tell us these must be formatted well, with headings and subheadings, so important information pops out.

What do decision makers want to know? Recruiters want to know your current job title, employer, and employment period. They also look at your previous position. Some recruiters also look at your education and your name. That's what you

need to concentrate on first. An objective statement may be included, but should probably kept clean and short. Concentrate on stating about how your past education and experience make you a good fit for the job. In the old days, we used to write about what we wanted in a new job. Today, that may not be the best thing to emphasize. Employers care about what they want. You can figure out if the job is a good match later, when you actually get an interview. Some specific jobs may require a longer resume. Typically, one or two pages is ideal. If you have held twelve jobs over the last thirty years, it may be best to concentrate on your last few positions. You can always make a note that further details will be supplied upon request especially for jobs you held long ago. Of course, there are always exceptions in case you held an exceptional job awhile back. But you need to use your own judgement. Today, a lot of resumes are posted online. This may be on your own website or a job

search website. Key words and phrases are things that hiring managers and recruiters look for when they search for resumes. If you want a job as a CPA or registered nurse, those words need to be on your document.

Can You Do It Yourself? If you are the do-it-yourself type, you may be able to produce an effective, clear, and eye catching document all by yourself. If not, a professional service may be a good investment. If you do produce your own resume, be sure and put yourself in the shoes of a busy decision maker. My wife and I will both turn 30 next month. We have two young children, and we make a little over $85,000 combined. The problem is we have about $70,000 in debt. Some of it is credit card debt, but nearly $50,000 is in two car loans. Her mom and dad have offered to let us move in with them, so we can save up money and start getting a better handle on our finances, but we’re not sure how we feel about this. What’s your advice?

I’ve been struggling financially for the past few months, so I’ve been playing the lottery once a week. To me, the chance to win millions is worth a few dollars a month, even if things are tight.

You’ve told me you’re having money troubles, and at the same time you’re throwing money out the window every week? Honestly, the small amount you’re talking about doesn’t make a difference. Even if it’s just two or three bucks a week, that action represents a lot of financially irresponsible behavior in your life.

Dear Justin, You’ve got a ridiculous amount of money wrapped up in those cars. I’d sell the stupid things, get into a couple of little beaters, and start living on a budget and paying down debt. In your situation, the only scenario where I’d even consider taking the in-laws up on their offer is one where the stay is for a very short, agreed-upon period of time. They’d have to be absolutely wonderful people, too, and everyone involved would need to know their boundaries. But you guys can get out of debt pretty fast if you’ll just lose the cars. You could even save a little money on the side while you were paying down debt, and buy a better car as soon as the debt was gone.

QUIT YOUR JOB BY IRIS GALLOWAY Losing patience with your current job? Have you started fantasizing about quitting dramatically? Maybe by throwing a trash can at your boss, or standing on a table to scream about how terribly you hate the place! If you are feeling anything approaching the above, take notice! The sooner you recognize your dissatisfaction the better prepared you will be to get out before you lose your mind. The better you plan the less likely you are to enact one of your crazy quitting fantasies out of anger. Even if it sounds satisfying in your head, it will only lead to career headaches. There are ways to leave your job that can actually HELP you in your next position. Think about setting up an exit where your coworkers and boss will think back fondly about your time there - even if you will just be glad to be gone! Alicia Dorowitz has decades of experience in human resources and recruiting. She has coached her fair share of disaffected workers through their job search and exit strategies. She says people are often so frustrated that they lose focus on their goals. "I have helped so many people who have been dealing with a job they dislike for so long they are ready to throw in the towel and quit without a plan." Dorowitz says, "Those kinds of feelings don't pop up out of no where."

If you notice yourself becoming bored or irritated with your boss or your responsibilities, pay attention to that feeling and use it to fuel your escape. Dorowitz says most of the people she has worked with waited too long to start planning. "If you see it early and start making a plan, it will be easy to deal with your boss being rude or demanding, because in your head you can tell yourself 'only a few more months'. Having an end in sight can prevent explosions of anger and poorly planned exits."

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN Quitting should never be an impulsive decision. It might feel great to grab your things and storm out, but that righteous fury will fade to embarrassment before too long. Remember that some of your current coworkers or managers might be invaluable references for future job applications. There are wrong ways to quit even without a dramatic outburst. Don't quit before you start your job search. Even if you have plenty of savings it is better not to rely on getting a new job while burning through all your emergency funds. It is easy to become desperate enough to take a bad offer when you have been out of work for a few months. Beyond the lack of paycheck you will be opening up awkward questions in future interviews about the gap! Don't resign just because you got a verbal offer from a company you interviewed with. Wait until that offer is in writing before you take steps to leave your current position. Instead of running away from a bad job, run toward your dream job! When you are in a bad position it is tempting to take the first offer you get just to make a move, but you might find yourself out of the frying pan and into the fire. Before you go leaping into a new job do your research. Figure out what you want out of a new job, and what exactly you are trying to avoid repeating. That being said, best laid plans go awry all the time. If you are in a seriously bad situation - workplace assault or sexual harassment - or when you are too stressed to maintain your health, it is completely reasonable to leave without a new job lined up.

THINK ABOUT SAVINGS AND BENEFITS Look seriously at your finances. Could you afford to take a pay cut if it meant getting into a position you enjoyed? Can you afford your medical needs with a gap in coverage? Calvin Ramsey says he waited two years to quit a job he hated because he needed the healthcare coverage to pay for his surgery. "I would have panic attacks on my breaks. It was awful. But I couldn't find another job that had coverage for the procedures I needed. I waited two weeks after I got back from recovery to turn in my resignation." The average job search takes nine months. When planning a job transition consider how much of that time you will be out of work. Sit down and do the math to see if your savings will cover the difference. lot of us, so what can we do? Getting a part-time job or selling off expensive items to get through that hard time might be well worth it. Avoid going into debt at all costs.

EXPLAIN YOUR REASONS FOR LEAVING - BUT NOT TOO MUCH When you tell your boss about leaving they will have questions. Think through what they will ask before they ask it and have answers ready. That last conversation they have with you might define how they remember you forever - for better or worse. Assume you might work with some of your colleagues again. Unless you are completely changing industries it is likely you will end up working with one or more of them in the future. Keep that in mind before you make an enemy. Even if the job was so terrible you can't wait to leave, find a polite way to talk about it. Pick a talking point and stick to it, for instance: "I loved working here, but I want to shift my career toward more work with x." Tell your boss about leaving before anyone else knows. Even if you are close with a coworker or two, there is always the chance that your boss will find out before you tell them and that is never a good look. Take the time to plan the conversation when neither of you will be busy, and if possible do it face-to-face in private. Never give notice through text or by email. After you tell your boss ask them how they want to proceed for your remaining time. They might ask you not to tell others, or offer to make an announcement on your behalf. Follow their lead while on company time, but feel free to reach out after-hours to potential references. Stay positive about leaving, even if others react badly.

LEAVE ON A GOOD NOTE The best last impression you can make on your old employer is to make sure they are prepared to lose you. If you need to help train someone to replace you, or make careful notes to help a coworker take over a project, do so. If you have the luxury of setting a leave date, choose one that helps the transition go smoothly. Don't try to poach connections or clients, especially if you signed a noncompete agreement. Employers will take legal action if they can, and even if they can't it will be considered rude. As glad as you might be to say goodbye to some coworkers, don't let them slip out of your network. Keep up with them on LinkedIn and other social media and make recommendations when you can. They will remember you more fondly and it will solidify your reputation as a great colleague.
