MASTER THESIS -SUNSPACE'S RETROFIT

Abstract The present work is focused on a parametric study based on numerical simulation models to support the refurbishment of sunspaces, aiming to improve energy efficiency and thermal comfort. The unregulated proliferation of transformed sunspaces, mainly in the 60´s and 80´s decades, has populated the Portuguese housing with these glazed balconies. Therefore, it is mandatory to assess the contribution of these spaces to the building's thermal balance. The general idea is that the development of detailed models and their upgrades can contribute for more conscious interventions in such till now ignored spaces. In the first phase of the work (INTRODUCTION), an overall perspective of the theme is presented,

Project information Title: Sunspace´s Thermal Retrofit Year: 2012 Resume: The choice of the theme on thermal rehabilitation of sunspace's is due to the combination of an informal observation of the suburbs with a conscious view of the Portuguese energy scenario. The omnipresence of glass balconies in an aged urban context , raised the question of what could be their role in reducing energy consumption, during a rehab. To optimize the glazed balconies for energy performance, it´s necessary to have a global vision to bring together the different dimensions where the problem is represented. Role: author

Environmental Systems Performance, Research version (ESP-r)

weighting the different dimensions involved. In the second part (STATE OF THE ART), the most relevant scientific works are reviewed, and an analysis is made about how to better study the possible improvement actions. Next, (METODOLOGIES OF ANALYSIS), the energy simulation programs are presented (ESP-r and Energy Plus), and subsequently calibrated. The physical model for the base configuration is constructed, and the most relevant concerns are assessed. Upgrades are applied to the base case in order to solve or mitigate those problems. In the next phase (RESULTS ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION), the levels of thermal comfort and energy consumption of each model are registered. The comparison, discussion and recommendations for the refurbishment of sunspaces are based on these results. In this chapter the air renewal is also assessed. In the final chapter, (CONCLUSION), the conclusions of the study are summarized and commented. The limitations of the used methodologies are pointed out and suggestions are presented for future research. This work is a solid contribution to the knowledge of the sunspaces' thermal behavior and to support their rational refurbishment towards energy efficiency and indoor thermal comfort.
