GOLF NEWS MAKERS The Finest Synthetic Greens Are Made Right Here In the Desert How would you like to have the same practice putting green in your backyard that Ken Venturi, Al Geiberger, Mark Wahlberg, John O. Hurley, Peter Ueberoth, Jackie Steinmann and a host of other VIPs have? It’s yours by calling Back Nine Greens. “I don’t know of anyone that works harder and is more dedicated than Dominic Nappi, owner and founder of Back Nine Greens,” says GolfNews Magazine Publisher Dan Poppers. “Dominic has served desert customers and customers beyond the desert for many, many years with one thing in mind—perfection for his customers. He’s dedicated to making the finest synthetic putting greens and he achieves that goal.” In addition to synthetic putting greens of all sizes, Dominic and his staff design and build artificial lawns, dog runs, animal facilities, sport fields, and playgrounds. Any use of artificial grass that you can think of, Back Nine Greens can fulfill. Call Dominic at 1-800-583-6619 for any questions or requests that you have.

For one whole day, the 240-acre resort with over 450 rooms and suites was closed to the public. GolfNews Magazine Publisher Dan Poppers, whose offices are in Rancho Mirage, dropped by the resort for a bite to eat and was approached in the resort’s driveway entrance by a plainclothes security guard. “Are you a guest of the hotel?” he PLEASE SEE PAGE 17

Golfing Midwives What’s Your Certification? My friends know I can, and often do, relate all aspects of my life to golf. For example: • Solving a difficult business problem right before a deadline is like executing a nice up and down. • Freezing up on a first date (prior to marriage, of course)—getting the yips. • Messing up an otherwise easy question from the wife (“Does this make me look fat?” e.g.)—shanking one. • Tripping stupidly on something easily avoidable? “Wow, you really chili-dipped that one.” • Having sex? Well, that can be pretty much anything in the golf lexicon, including, but not limited to the yips, shanks, chili-dipping and enjoying a nice up and down. Perhaps it was this prior experience that gave me insight into a difficult political issue facing my home state. Well, it’s not so much difficult as it is noisy and uncomfortable. The issue is midwifery (pronounced like ‘pilfery’ not ‘winery’). Yes, that does mean the delivering of babies at home by a midwife. Now, I never thought midwifery would be an important political issue ANYWHERE, but apparently back in South Dakota it is. (For those who don’t know, I’m originally from that state of great, friendly people…just not very many of them.) Recently, I enjoyed dinner with some friends from back home, and they were VERY passionate about midwifery. To them it was an incredibly personal issue that they wanted to talk about for a very, very, very long time. By the way they talked you would think midwifery was the most important issue facing South Dakota, if not the world. Would You Hit With a Persimmon Driver? Anyway, these friends talked at length regarding the necessity to legalize midwives. I listened as they talked about per-

sonal choice, quality care and all that. I told them I didn’t care. Now, I don’t want to offend any midwife proponents reading this (California has over 100 legally practicing midwives who probably do a fine job), but to me it seemed like people were giving up advantages of the modern age. Not that I cared. If someone wanted to trade in their SUV for a horse and buggy, I wish them Godspeed. Or, more to the point, if someone wants to trade in their 460cc titanium driver for a persimmon headed 1-wood, I’ll wish them good luck then proceed to take their money in a head-to-head match. Yet, despite my friends’ arguments, I couldn’t explain my difficulty with midwives…that is until I put it in golf terms. Thinking of midwives in terms of golfing gave me that “Eureka!” moment. I couldn’t understand the differences between Certified Midwives (CM), Certified Professional Midwives (CPM), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), versus the typical OB/GYN Doctor. By definition and decree, any practitioner needed more education and more training as he or she moved up the ladder. Why did my friends want someone to deliver their baby who was the least trained option? I didn’t get it. Which Certified Golfer Are You? Then I correlated that to the golfing world. Consider these following acronyms to reflect the different golfing equivalents of their birthing counterparts: • CH – a Certified Hacker. Someone who loves the game, is passionate, but doesn’t know much beyond how much beer costs at the halfway house. • PGP – Pretty Good Player might play from anywhere from a 7-handicap to bogey golf. Better than 95% of all players. • DGP – Damn Good Player might play to scratch, or even toy with small pro tours. • PGA/CTP – the golfing equivalent of the acronym baby doc, standing for a Professional Golf Association Certified Teaching Professional. This encompasses anyone

who can give a worthwhile lesson at your local course, to the Hank Haneys of the world. What struck me as so revealing about the midwife-golfer comparison is that the loudest noise came from those with the lowest certification. Just think of your own golfing experience. If it’s anything like mine, it’s the worst golfers in the world who can’t stop from offering advice. Even when they are no better, and often times way worse than you, they can’t stop talking. They act like they not only know what supinating versus pronating is, but that they actually helped ghostwrite Ben Hogan’s Five Lessons. My friend, Al, classifies as a CH, and he loves giving advice. For a long time, he got stuck on tempo. Everything wrong could be traced to tempo. If you skulled a shot it was because your swing was too slow. If you messed up while stupidly flirting with the drink cart girl, you delivered your pick-up line too fast. The Worst Scream The Most He’d literally scream: “You’re swinging too hard!” What does that mean anyway? Did he mean I swung too fast, or with too much muscle, or did my shot go too far and he wanted me to slice it short into the right rough like he always did? I mean, Arnold Palmer swung with unbridled energy, but it was obviously an okay tempo for him. And the thing with Al is that the guy was probably a 36 handicap if he counted every stroke legitimately. This guy shouldn’t offer swing advice to anybody. Yet he did so frequently.

Way back in the late 1980s, the golfnewsmag.com

great sports writer Rick Reilly coined the term “hackalooskie” to describe this. Roughly defined, it was “when a golfer with a higher handicap and lesser ability gives swing advice to a golfer with a lower handicap and more ability.” The hackalooskie concept thrives on courses around the world. There is no shortage of Certified Hackers out there who act like the golfing world is begging to hear their imparted knowledge. Perhaps it’s like the old African proverb: “The empty drum makes the loudest noise.” Or, in golf terms, the worst hacker offers the most advice. This practice flies in the face of logic. It’s directly opposite of how it should be. When our swings go bad, we should keep our mouths shut and seek out the most qualified person to help correct them. Only, few of us do. We don’t take lessons near as often as we should. I say this fully admitting I help perpetuate the system. I take advice from my brothers, father and friends, though I’m better than all of them. I do it because when I’m desperate, I’ll seek out any aid to correct a flaw. Maybe it’s bullheadedness or foolish optimism thinking that my unqualified acquaintances can help. Maybe it’s the fact that, on rare occasions, they actually have. Perhaps they know my swing well enough, or perhaps they read enough golf instruction books. Perhaps it’s just an example of how even the blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes. Golfers should seek out PGA/CTPs for swing advice, yet we get most of our tips from CHs. Not that it’s anything terrible. I’m sure most hackalooskie advice goes in one ear and out the other causing no long-term harm, just as I’m sure many midwives deliver healthy babies. I guess the problem I have with it from a golfing standpoint is the lack of a common starting point. Midwives argue that you don’t need hospitals for childbirth because giving birth is completely natural and beautiful. Unfortunately, most of our golf swings are anything but.

Arnold Palmer swung with unbridled energy, but it was obviously an okay tempo for him.

asked. “No,” Poppers responded. “Then you can’t come in,” he said. “The hotel is closed to the public.” For any golfer that wanted to stay overnight in the hotel and play Rancho Las Palmas Country Club (part of the hotel’s stay & play package), they were out of luck on January 31. Anyone that doubts the Koch brothers’ power, should reconsider. They closed down to the public an entire internationally renowned four-star resort in the heart of the season for a day. Other than possibly the President of the United States or Tiger Woods before he was unveiled a fraud, no one else could do that. A telephone call to the resort’s general manager asking to explain exactly why the resort closed its doors remains unanswered at press time.

Golf Pros Smart With Their Money It’s good to hear in these lean times that, at least, one organization is shrewd with its money. Southern California PGA President Jason Taylor reported to his members that the SCPGA Investment Committee led by Chairman Jeff Johnson recently gave the SCPGA $160,000 as a result of sound investments. “Now, it is time to spend,” said Taylor proudly in his Financial Update for [The] New Year. “What do we do with $160,000?” Taylor is asking input from SCPGA members on how to spend the money. The windfall could be split 1,700 ways and each member’s dues decreased $100, however, Taylor feels the majority of the money should be spent on efforts to grow the game. How to spend $160,000 is always a nice “problem” to have. Congratulations SCPGA for almost doing the impossible—increasing revenues when most of the rest of the country is going in the opposite direction.

Southern California Pros Honored The SCPGA recently honored golf professionals deserving of recognition. Held at Mission Hills CC in Rancho Mirage, the dinner and ceremony recognized the following 2010 Award Winners: Ed Winiecki, Golf Profesgolfnewsmag.com

Worthy Golf Tournament at Classic Club Longtime desert resident Tim Venturi in January of 2009 was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He went through nine months of painful treatment in the desert in the attempt to save his bladder but it couldn’t be done. Tim was sent to Loma Linda Medical in September for what was to be a routine surgical procedure to remove his bladder. He ended up in Intensive Care three different times during post surgical care and was in a coma for 2 1/2 weeks. Doctors gave him only a 20% chance of survival. He has made a remarkable recovery due to his courage and the wonderful doctors and nurses at Loma Linda. The 2nd Annual Tim Venturi Bladder Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament takes place April 22, 2011 at Classic Club to benefit the Loma Linda University School of Medicine Roger Barnes Urology Fund. You

Proof That Pros Are Attending to Business Rather Than Playing Golf There’s an old saying, “Those that work in the golf industry play less golf than before they were working in the golf industry”—a truism applicable to most PGA club professionals. In the most recent Southern California PGASouthern California Golf Association Honors Matches at Indian Wells CC, the Amateur team won the 3rd annual duel for the third-time in a row. The score: 17-13. The amateurs are undefeated against the pros. The 10-player pro team included highly accomplished tournament players Ron Skayhan and Chris Starkjohann, however, their skills weren’t good enough to fend off the amateur team.

Whose Swing Would You Most Like to Steal? Whose swing would you most like to steal? This is what Golf Magazine asked its readers in a recent survey. You might be surprised at the overwhelming consensus. The number one choice: Fred Couples (67%), then Tiger Woods (10%), Phil Mickelson (8%), and Other (15%). In the same survey, the magazine asked, “Which shot delivers the most satisfaction? ‘”Sticking a wedge close,” was the clear choice at 42%. Interestingly enough, “A monster drive down the middle” came in a lowly fourth at only 15%. Taking second at 21%, “Dropping a clutch 5-foot putt.”

there’s still no consensus. Ben Crenshaw, Jim Furyk, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Greg Norman, Jim MacKay (caddie for Phil Mickelson), Steve Williams (caddie for Tiger Woods), among others, say OUT of the bunker. Prominent Pro Explains Why He Didn’t Play in The Hope Top European money leader for 2010 and #2 in the world rankings, Martin Kaymer, shot 21-under to win the 2010 Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in the other desert half-way around the world, while at the same time Jhonattan Vegas in our desert shot 27-under to beat defending champion Bill Haas in a playoff. Explaining why he played in Abu Dhabi rather than La Quinta, Kaymer said, “The Bob Hope isn’t the same tournament I first played in. When I did play, I really liked it. Indian Wells, La Quinta, Bermuda Dunes, and Tamarisk were all courses I enjoyed. But my least favorite was the toughest course, PGA West, and now they are all set up that way. Now we play on courses with long rough that still produce good scores for us, but which the amateurs can’t have any fun on. Before a 10-handicapper would go out and make four birdies, shoot seven over and have a great time.” Kaymer’s point is well taken. “It appears The Hope is between a rock and a hard place,” said GolfNews Magazine Publisher Dan Poppers. “Pressure from the PGA Tour has dictated that The Hope must play on longer, more challenging courses under more legitimate PLEASE SEE PAGE 30

GOLF AS I SEE IT INSTRUCTION long irons by John Cook

Hit Your 3-iron the Same Way You Hit Your 9-iron

John Cook is one of the best long iron hitters on the Champions Tour. Cook shares his insight and explains how you can hit great long iron shots. To hit long irons (1, 2, 3, and 4-irons) successfully, maintain the same swing that you use for short irons. Swing with normal speed, not too hard. Do not vary your swing with different clubs. Many amateurs get a club in their hands feeling they don’t have enough loft. To compensate, they think: how am I going to get the ball up in the air? The negative consequences are they try to help the ball fly higher. The club doesn’t need any help; it just needs to be swung and put in motion. Just like a fish is designed to swim, a long iron and its clubface are designed to hit the ball far without any added effort by the golfer. With the longer irons, it’s a challenge to know precisely how far to stand from the ball. You want to be far enough from the ball that your shoulders are going to be able to turn, but you don’t want to be so far away that you’re crunched over and your weight gets way out on your toes. You have to find a happy medium allowing your arms to hang and, at the same time, still have your weight in the center of your stance.

You need to find what’s comfortable for you. You have to vary the distance from the ball with each club because each club is a halfinch longer. As you go sequentially through the clubs in your bag, the added shaft length of each club makes it necessary for you to stand just a bit farther away from the ball each time. If you don’t vary your stance, your swing will be impeded because your arms will be compressed toward your body. I always position the ball inside my left heel and no farther back than the middle of my stance. Very rarely will I position the ball out on my front toes or back past the middle of my stance, unless I’m trying to execute a “get out of trouble” shot. Remember, swing normally. Let the loft and the shaft of the club work for you and keep you body position nice and low. Billions of dollars have been spent on technology to produce that long iron in your hands. The club knows what to do; you only need to put it in motion on the correct path. John Cook, winner of 11 PGA Tour tournaments including the ’92 and ’97 Bob Hope Classic and six Champions Tour victories. In this young 2011 season on the Champions Tour, Cook won the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and has earned a total of over $328,000.

VENTURI’S VIEW INSTRUCTION

concentration • sensitivity

by Ken Venturi

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOUND MAKE ALL YOUR SHOTS TROUBLE SHOTS Some golfers are surprised when they hit a good shot out of trouble. They shouldn’t be. The truth is that, when you face a difficult shot, you usually concentrate better, think harder about what you have to do and therefore generally make the shot you intended to make. Another reason is that you focus more sharply on where you have to hit the ball. Just think how much better you would score if you could focus that hard on all your shots.

When I was a kid growing up in San Francisco, I found that, if I tried to hit a shot with a plane flying over, I seldom made solid contact. The change in sound was distracting, and it threw off my concentration and balance just enough to cause a poor shot. Later, when playing in tournaments, I found that noise didn’t bother me as long as it was consistent. In a sense it was like being a tightrope walker. The reason tightrope walkers need the sound of a snare drum during their acts is that it drowns out other sounds and gives them a consistent background noise. Sound is also the reason why I hate to wear a stocking cap in cold weather. Pulling the cap down over my ears makes it difficult to hear the club’s contact with the ball. The sound of impact is a key factor to me, and it might be for you, too. So in cold weather, try rolling your cap up above your ears before each shot. Playing For First Prior to the first round of many tournaments, LPGA founding member Mildred (Babe) Didrikson Zaharias often watched her competitors hitting balls on the range and would say loud enough for all to hear: “I don’t know why you’re practicing so hard to finish second.” Other times, she’d joke with the gallery around the first tee: “The Babe is here. Who’s coming in second?” Sure, she acted supremely confident to play up her public image as the selfproclaimed, “Best Athlete in the World,” but it was also excellent gamesmanship. Babe believed, probably rightly, that it intimidated her competitors and therefore gave her a mental edge.

Winning Swagger Walter Hagen pioneered this tactic decades before when he became the first professional golfer to win as much by swagger as by ability. The famous British golf writer Henry Longhurst said of Hagen, “He won the Open Championship of this country four times and of his own United States twice, and he made more bad shots in doing so than the man who finished second would make in a month.” Why then did Hagen win? Longhurst prescribed the victories to profound belief in self. “An overwhelming confidence in his powers,” wrote Longhurst describing Hagen. “’Waal, who’s going to be sec-

ond?’ he would drawl as he strolled out to the first tee. Then he would win—and win against the best competition the world could offer. His imitators cried: ‘Who’s going to be second?’ and then finished twentieth.” With hundreds of victories between them, both Hagen and Zaharias backed up their braggadocio. They won often, but not always. In the 1924 British Open, Hagen needed to make a nine-foot-putt on the last hole to win. Longhurst described the action: “Where most men would have spent an age in preparation, Hagen

strolled up to his putt and with scarcely a preliminary glance ran it into the hole. As he walked from the green, a colleague of mine said to him: ‘You seemed to treat that putt very casually, Hagen. Did you know you had it to win?’ ‘Sure, I knew I had it to win,’ drawled Walter, ‘but no man ever beat me in a playoff!’” Hagen never defeated in playoffs? Though he said it, it’s not true. Just the year before he lost the PGA Championship to Gene Sarazen in sudden-death.

Powerful Connection Between Belief and Performance The lesson here is not the fact that we all “win some, lose some” but rather the powerful connection between belief and performance. It doesn’t matter if Hagen won every playoff. What matters is, no matter what, he believed he’d win which gave him the coolness necessary to hole the putt. Today’s Tour players aren’t usually so brash about predicting championships. Oh, there have been occasions in recent golfnewsmag.com

years where certain players like Rory Sabbatini and Stephen Ames have called out Tiger Woods, but they usually go down in flames. Even that, however, reinforces the central point. These players said, “I want Tiger” or “Anything can happen.” They didn’t outright predict victory. They got throttled because they thought they could win, whereas Tiger thinks he will win (at least Tiger in his days of supremacy felt that way). After admitting in a press conference once that he thought of himself as the favorite in every tournament, Woods said his philosophy was: “If you don’t believe you can win an event, don’t show up.” Phil Mickelson shares that same supreme self-confidence. Back when he still firmly held the title of the ‘Best Golfer to Never Win a Major,’ Phil said he thought he could win the Grand Slam that year. When a surprised press corps asked him to explain how he could think that given his repeated failures, an honest Mickelson said: “I have to.” Phil explained that if he didn’t think he could win the next major then he surely wouldn’t. Therein lies the contra-

diction—pros think positively not because they are positive, but rather because they know the dangers of thinking negatively. As three-time British Open champion Henry Cotton once observed: “Golf is a matter of confidence. If you think you cannot do it, there is no chance you will.” From Walter Hagen to Babe Zaharias, from Tiger to Phil, golfers convince themselves they can win because it beats the alternative. As Dr. Bob Rotella, the star sports psychologist to many Tour players, wrote: “The correlation between thinking well and making successful shots is not 100 percent. But the correlation between thinking badly and unsuccessful shots is much higher.” As far as advice to any avid hacker out there reading this, just think of the Little Engine That Could. He made it over the top of the mountain, not chanting “I think I might” or “I doubt I can.” Rather, he thought he could, he thought he could, he thought he could…so he could, and did. Sure, you might not overcome every mountain. You might not win every golf match. You will not sink every putt. However, there’s far more good than harm in thinking positive. Besides, it beats the alternative.

TEAM GEIBERGER INSTRUCTION swing efficiently by Al & Bryan Geiberger

Focus on Your Four “Ls” “L-evate” Your Swing

Focusing on your “Ls” is when in your backswing your right arm folds to 90 degrees to accumulate power and maintain a proper distance from the body, [see photo #1] and your left arm does the same thing in your forward swing. You create an L position with your elbow coming to a 90-degree angle. It doesn’t collapse less than 90-degrees nor does it go beyond 90-degrees. Too large an angle (straighter arm) leads to a power loss. Too small an angle (fully folded arm) can lead to several serious issues including limiting accuracy. On the forward swing and follow-though, you reproduce with the left arm the same kind of L. The forward-swing mimics the backswing. You also create an L with the straight left arm and the shaft of the club [see photo #2]. Then there’s a fourth L when the right arm creates a 90-degree angle with the shaft of the club [see photo #3]. Notice how Ben Hogan finished in the L position— arguably the most famous L of all time [see photo #4].. Older players need to realize that it’s more difficult to get to and maintain the 90-degree L position, however, do your best to get as close as you can within the limits of your flexibility. Why are the four Ls important? By reproducing the four Ls in your golf swing, you are maximizing the storage of energy in your golf swing, energy being the necessary component to create power. The Ls are necessary for an efficient swing. The Ls accommodate the turning of the shoulders—a fundamental ingredient of the golf swing. Try hitting a golf ball without turning your shoulders and you’ll quickly realize how important it is to do so. The Ls offer you what every good golfer should want— a repeatable, consistent swing with enough power to successfully play the 26 Golf News Magazine March 2011

golf course. There are so many moving parts to the golf swing, the Ls give you a framework that is relatively simple to evaluate and achieve key elements to a solid golf swing.

GOLF TIP Practice and play with your Ls in mind. It’s not always easy to examine your own positions in your golf swing. Focusing on your Ls serves, at least, two very important purposes. One, they encourage you to make the correct swing in terms of the position of your shoulders, arms, hands, and wrists, with the result of maximizing swing efficiency. Two, your Ls give you a framework by which to “self-correct” yourself. They allow you to check your positions. If you’re emulating your Ls, you are on the right track. If you’re not emulating your Ls, you need to re-examine and “L-evate” your swing.

Al Geiberger, forever known as the first golfer ever to shoot 59 in official PGA Tour (and any other major pro tour) competition, won 21 PGA Tour and Champions Tour tournaments, including the 1966 PGA Championship. Bryan Geiberger, professional tour player, played collegiate golf at Oregon State University. As a team, they are instructing interested students. SELF-HELP LESSONS INSTRUCTION preparation by Fred Elliott

HOME ON THE RANGE A Couple Thoughts for the Practice Tee

We have all seen how scores on the professional tours have dropped dramatically in the last 40 yrs. It’s not just the winning score, but all scores have dropped significantly. Incredibly improved equipment, better conditioned golf courses, and the coming of age of better athletes on training regimes similar to other major sports are usually the reasons cited for this phenomenon. There is one more factor that has contributed. Professional golfers have learned to use the practice tee much more effectively. Going to the range after the round with a bucket of balls to “figure out the problem “ has been greatly expanded upon. There are essentially 3 reasons we want to proceed to the practice tee. If we focus on the one that is our priority and not intermingle them, we will have success. 1. WARMING UP BEFORE THE ROUND Before our round of golf, warming up should be #1 priority. We are not there for a practice session, nor are we there to improve our swing mechanics. The purpose of being on the practice tee is to warm and stretch body parts and get a feel for the clubs before the round. Doing anything else creates confusion and inappropriate expectations. Don’t be too concerned about the quality of shots; many times there seems to be no correlation between how we hit it before the round and how we did during the round. 2. IMPROVING OUR ABILITY TO PLAY GOLF This means simply to be very TARGET-oriented and to hit the shots in a way that are as similar to playing on the course as possible. For instance, picture the tee shot on the first hole; and then hit the club that you would use for the second shot that the tee shot left you. Visualizing playing the entire course on the practice tee can be very effective and even fun. You may find yourself using a different club on each swing. We constantly hear, “It’s working well on the range, but I can’t seem to transfer it to the course.” Practice as though you are playing is an effective way to solve this problem. 3. IMPROVE ONE’S SWING MECHANICS If you’ve reached a plateau in your golf game and you’re happy with your short game, the proper use of the practice tee could be your ticket. There are some things you need to know about this course of action . The minute we start to change grip, set-up, positions in the swing, or the flow of the swing itself, we will destroy our timing for

golfnewsmag.com

the swing we have. This process is not a “fix.” We used to think we eliminated a swing error through repeated practice. The truth is we are learning a new skill. Remember when you first took up the game, how long it took before any consistency developed. This will take the same kind of patience and perseverance. Some things to remember: 1) Don’t be concerned where the ball goes; 2) It is going to take a lot of sessions and lots of repetitions. [The old idea of 21 days or 1500 repetitions is

Professional golfers have learned to use the practice tee much more effectively. Going to the range after the round with a bucket of balls to “figure out the problem” has been greatly expanded upon. way too low; it will depend on lots of individual factors.]; 3) Have a consistent plan, don’t change it in midstream. You must be confident you’re on the path to a stronger, sounder game. In conclusion, it is extremely important not to mix these 3 approaches towards using the practice tee. Each approach has a very specific purpose and intermingling then will cause nothing but confusion and frustration. Remember the reason you are there that day, stick to it, and the great game of golf will be a lot more enjoyable. Fred Elliott is the PGA Director of Instruction at Rosewood Lakes G.C., Reno, Nevada.

OWENISMS INSTRUCTION the pivot by Ed Owen

How to Improve the Pivot in Your Golf Swing One thing for sure, if we start the golf stroke with the arms and hands, some convulsive erratic ball flight will be forthcoming. So, it’s important to start the stroke with the pivot or specifically the left shoulder moving FORWARD. The following drills will give you the correct sequence of the stroke. A. Clasp the left arm behind the wrist with your right hand. B. Start your backswing (remembering to start with your left shoulder moving FORWARD) and continue with your right hand clasping your left arm. C. Because you started the pivot with your left shoulder, you will find that at the top of the backswing you are in a correct position to start your down stroke.

A

When you follow-though in your forward swing with you wrist continuing to be clasped by your right hand, you will emulate and get the feel of the proper pivot in the golf swing. To see the value of starting the stroke with the left shoulder moving FORWARD, try only using the arms and hands to start the stroke rather than your left shoulder and predictably you will feel completely out of balance. Ed Owen, master golf instructor, has taught golf for over 30 years. To talk with Ed, call him at (760) 464-4084 or email at s.edowen@earthlink.net.

Street Legal vs. Low Speed Vehicles… Which One Is Best Suited For You? Most people who buy golf cars are not aware of the difference between Street Legal golf cars vs. Low Speed Vehicles. Desert Street Legal is a definition started by the City of Palm Desert years ago. A street legal golf car must include a windshield, rear lights, head lights, brake lights, parking brake, red reflectors, seat belt, horn, front and rear turn signal indicators, top, mirrors, unobstructive view to rear, and travel no faster than 25mph. A Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) is a government definition that the NHSTA defined back in 1998 under the Safety Standard Number 500. LSVs are golf cars that have all the above safety equipment on them and travel between 20 and 25 mph. LSVs must have a 17 digit VIN number on them. The IRS also allows a 10% Federal Tax Credit on any LSV registered with the IRS. At Yamaha Golf Cars of Palm Springs, we have 3 different vehicles that qualify for the IRS credit. We have Garia, Polaris and Yamaha that meet the LSV requirements. Garia is a European golf car that is manufactured from the ground up—to be used on the street and golf course—built in the Valmet Factory in Finland. This is the same factory where Porsche builds their Boxster and Cayman vehicles. Polaris is a Minnesota company that builds only street legal

The Garia golf cars. Just like Garia they do not sell to golf courses. The LSV that Polaris builds has adjustable coil over suspension and convertible rear seat configurations. Items you will not find on any golf car primarily built for the course. Please call (760) 7755000 for more information.

Tour conditions. So, The Hope has complied by changing to more competitive venues with more competitive course setups. By doing so, it has diminished its original purpose—a fun event for the amateur and a way for the professional tour player to ease into the new season. “Now, the pros have to work harder to compete in the Hope and so do the amateurs. One of The Hope’s challenges is to keep the tournament fun and competitive—often two diametrically opposed human activities. “On the other hand, if The Hope would have not changed venues and made the tournament more challenging and difficult for the pros, the implication was that the PGA Tour might disengage itself from The Hope tournament altogether, which would mean sure death to the tournament. So, the sacrifice took place. The ‘down-home’ feel of the tournament at local, smaller private clubs with lighter roughs has given way to magnificent longer La Quinta courses necessitating strategic shot-making not seen before in ‘the old days.’ The sacrificial lamb—the amateur player struggling to have fun in the tournament. However, there’s been no less interest by amateurs who want to play. At a price tag of $12,000 up to $25,000, depending on the pro-am package chosen, the 2011 Bob Hope Classic amateur field was sold out!” Rubbing elbows with PGA Tour professionals has definitely held its value, at least for now.

The Best in the World Converge to Compete in the 40th Kraft Nabisco Championship at Mission Hills Country Club By Dan Poppers Michelle Wie will need to improve her driving accuracy AND her putting to win the KNC. She ranked 120-T on the LPGA Tour in 2010 averaging 30.74 putts per round.

GOLFNEWS

How often do you have the opportunity to watch in person the best players in the world compete in their sport? That moment is upon us. Starting this month— March 31-April 3— literally the best players in the world in women’s golf will tee it up at Mission Hills Country Club in the Kraft Nabisco Championship, a.k.a. the LPGA Tour’s version of The Masters. Comparing any golf course to Augusta National is a mistake, however, the Mission Hills Country Club Dinah Shore Tournament Course, designed by legendary Desmond Muirhead, has its own intrigue and mystique. It is a beautiful meandering layout; a traditional masterpiece that lulls you into thinking it can be mastered. However, more times than not, the course masters you. Virtually every important player on earth that qualifies for the Kraft Nabisco Championship plays in the Kraft Nabisco Championship. The consensus is that no player in the world of any consequence would ever miss competing in this, the first LPGA major of the year.

Three Consecutive Hole-in-Ones On The Same Hole: It Happened and Should Be Acknowledged As One of The Most Amazing Feats In the History of Golf By Dan Poppers Part 3 of a 3-part Series The shots that should have been heard ‘round the golf world were hushed by the skeptics. The Sacramento golf community heard the shots—press coverage was extensive because the amazing “hard-tobelieve” feat took place at Antelope Greens Golf Course, located just north of our capital city. On April 13, 2005, Bob Fleming, Marc Arcuri, and Dan Condie did the near impossible—each went to the tee on hole #15, playing 105 yards, and smacked in hole-in-ones. Consecutively! First Fleming, then Arcuri, and finally Condie. David Schmacher teed off first and was the lone non-ace shooter. [For a full description and details of their shots, read Part 2 in GNM’s Feb ’11 issue.] The downside of doing the near impossible is being believed. The response from the golf community was an overwhelming, “It couldn’t have happened.” [See Part 1 in GNM’s Jan ’11 issue for a full description of the skeptics that spewed nasty remarks.] All four golfers are veteran players known for having high ethical standards including telling the truth. When their integrity was attacked, Schmacher said he wasn’t going to take it anymore and proposed that the four of them take a lie detector test. He sought out the best polygraph examiner he could find, paid out of his own pocket the $4,000 fee, and they took the test. Beginning on Page 40 is a copy of the actual polygraph test.

Marc Arcuri, Bob Fleming, David Schmacher (standing) and Dan Condie submitted to a grueling 8-hour polygraph examination to determine whether or not they were telling the truth.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO HEAL AN ACTIVE BODY? We all know we have to rest to help heal an injury. But what if you are an active individual or an athlete, and taking time off from your sport or pastime is impossible or undesirable? If the pain is tolerable, many choose to just put up with it. Golfers are particularly prone to this attitude. We just love the game.

decompression treatments are very unique,” Rappe said. “I took an extensive post graduate course in spinal decompression from Dr. Jay Kennedy, D.C..” Dr. Rappe’s high-power laser, the same used by most professional sports teams to treat their athletes, helps keep golfers playing throughout their course of therapy. “Golfers are like paid athletes,” he said. “They won’t stop playing the game, even to help the healing process. That’s okay, we can work around that.”

It Takes One to Know One Dr. Grey Rappe, D.C., understands this way of thinking. A world-class athlete in college, he remains active today playing golf and continuing to pursue becoming a master in martial arts after 25 years of training. Dr. Rappe received chiropractic care while preparing for and competing in the 1988 Olympic trials in pole vaulting. Impressed with his results, he began studying to be a chiropractor himself. Athletes and active adults make up a large part of his practice, and he credits some very innovative equipment for his high rate of success.

Personalized Care Makes All The Difference Years of treating local athletes, from Pro golfers and Pro tennis players to high school football and track athletes has taught Dr. Rappe that the most important component of any successful therapy is a customized treatment plan for each patient. “We tailor each treatment plan to the needs of that patient,” said Dr. Rappe. “We even offer Custom Golf Packages. Players needing a combination of therapies, or who would like to strengthen their core and improve their range of motion using our Active Therapeutic Movement (ATM) machine, can get what they need at a more affordable, package rate. Personal care and state of the art equipment are what sets us apart.” For a FREE Consultation call (760) 777-4177

R&R Golf Cars: Taking The Courses By Storm With a friendly, down-to-earth staff and affordable prices, R&R Golf Cars has become a well-known entity in the Coachella Valley. From small beginnings, R&R has grown and continues to grow with the high demand of quality customer service and prices everyone can afford. Rory Royston started R&R Golf Cars in May 2010 with humble expectations. By August, Rory leased R&R’s first sizeable location, over 2,500 square feet of industrial and office space. With the influx of business, in three short months the search began for an even larger location. In January 2011, Royston and 10 employees acquired an additional 7,500 square foot location and is now utilizing the space for in-house upholstery, and building customized golf cars and bodies. All the custom bodies you see around (Bentley, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Mini, etc.) originate here at R&R. R&R is offering a personalized “Bentley” style golf car for only $6,995 plus tax! Including choice of paint, upholstery, carpet, 12” chrome wheels, and not to mention a speed of 19-22 mph, it’s unbeatable! R&R Golf Cars in January 2011 inherited our very own 6, 8, and 12-volt battery, with excellent specifications, weight, and durability. With a two-year warranty, it combats the Trojan, and

compares with the best high-grade batteries available. The best part is, it’s less expensive! Six 6-volt batteries are now only $535 plus tax, including installation. For inquiries, call (760) 360-CART (2278). The plans for R&R are always growing with a showroom in the near future. The team at R&R Golf Cars gives thanks to everyone who Bentley has made our progress possible, and we invite newcomers to come meet everyone and see what R&R is all about. Both locations are conveniently located two blocks from Sun City Palm Desert at 77-588 El Duna Court Suite G. Give your golf car a little “R&R!”

HEALTH & FITNESS Accent on Acupuncture by Dr. Kristen Bohnet

Quality Living When You are 100 GolfNews Magazine (GNM): Getting well and staying well often takes time. An ailment takes “X” amount of years to develop, therefore, you can’t necessarily expect it to go away instantly.” Is that correct? Dr. Bohnet: Yes, it’s typically true, but not always. If there are years and years of bad diet, stress, and moving improperly that create the disorder(s), then it will take an appropriate amount of time and treatment to reverse the disorder(s). With acupuncture in some cases, you don’t just get fixed by putting needles in. Acupuncture for these individuals is a process of re-regulating the body. GNM: With the use of the best medicine— Western and Chinese combined—in regards to the extension of life with good quality, what age can life be extended to under ideal conditions? Dr. Bohnet: With the best of all medicines, I say in the 100s. Such as in the range of 105, 110. I

don’t think much more than that because of the natural aging processes that should not be contradicted. GNM: So, what you’re saying as we know medicines and techniques today, under the best conditions, the average lifespan of human beings could be in the 100s. We can play golf when we’re 105? Dr. Bohnet: I would say so. We are living longer and longer. If we live better during all those years, then we can live even we can expand ‘longer.’ GNM: And most golfers are golfers for life. The healthier they keep their bodies and minds over the years, the longer they can play golf. Is that how your golfing patients feel? Dr. Bohnet: I treat a lot of golfers and they have a strong common bond. They want to play as often as possible and for as many years as possible. My job is to do everything in my power to help them achieve those two goals. Dr. Kristen Bohnet, D.C., L.Ac., licensed in both acupuncture and chiropractic, welcomes new patients at her La Quinta office. Call 760.771.2332.

too many hidden nooks and crannies that Desmond Muirhead included in his design for an erratic player to overcome. Will 2011 be the year she tempers her distance and gains control of her target—plays rather than sprays, so to speak—which is absolutely necessary to win at Mission Hills? For those that are overly critical of Michelle wondering why she hasn’t won more, let us remember that not too long ago she was a teenager. She’s only been officially on the LPGA Tour for two years (2011 being only her 3rd season). Wie started golf at age 4 and because she has been a dominant name in women’s golf for so long, it’s easy to fall in the trap that she’s a seasoned veteran LPGA Tour player which she is not. Remember, she’s only 21 and possibly still growing!
