The Joanne Winter Arizona Silver Belle Championship

Presented By A.B. Farrington Foundation Katherine Schuster 2019 Champion

Welcome From the President

For many years, I have dreamed of 2020 - a year to celebrate our 50 championships. We mentally planned a gala event, found a venue that could host 300 people and searched for places to scan years of paper scrapbooks into digital form to create an amazing video. In the spring of 2020, COVID struck and over the summer, our plans to have a gala celebration of the milestone vanished. However, we decided to continue with the championship in its regularly scheduled dates. We did not know if the players, Briarwood Country Club, and volunteers would consider participating. They did - with an overwhelming YES! We had over 275 entries for the 90 spots. What was happening in 1971 when the Silver Belle was founded? Intel released the first microprocessor to begin the digital age, Disney World (FL) opened, the voting age was lowered to 18, a gallon of gas cost 40 cents, and Alan Sheppard made the first golf swing on the moon. The inaugural champion was Kathy (Gaugn) Mant. Kathy went on to play the LPGA tour, teach golf, coach at Georgia State for 20 years and become a member of the PNGA Hall of Fame. Since then, the Silver Belle has had 49 champions that have continued in the golf industry or pursued other interests – for example, botany at Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix, or raising basset hounds. They all have memories of the Silver Belle. 2020 may be remembered as the year of the pandemic, but I hope everyone also remembers it as a fantastic championship. For our Champion, she will receive the last of the hand carved Kachina by Elmer Adams from the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona. We are also sad to say that the smaller flight Kachina awards are the last ones carved by Tyron Duwyenie, who passed away this spring. We will find replacements, but these artists’ legacy will live with those who have received them for over 20 years. Be proud of who you are – you are in the elite category of female amateur golfers. It is time to create your own Silver Belle memories. Play well and continue to stay safe and healthy. Barbara Byrnes — President 2020

The Silver Belle Exists Because of Three Key Elements: The Visionary who Breathed Life into it... The Volunteers who have Nurtured it’s Development... The Players of Great Skill and Character who have Given it an Outstanding Reputation

Silver Belle our story

In 1971, LPGA Professional Joanne Winter had a dream. She noticed that there were very few golf tournaments for girls and wanted to start one in Arizona. She wanted players to have the chance to experience the fun and excitement of tournament golf. Thanks to Joanne’s vision, a donation from one of her students and the tournament guidance of the Arizona Women’s Golf Association, the Arizona Silver Belle Championship was born. There were just 23 players that first year, but thanks to increased publicity and the tireless efforts of Joanne and her volunteers, the field grew to more than 100 within three years. Soon thereafter it became recognized by the United States Golf Association as a national event, drawing players from around the country. Over the years the Silver Belle has become one of golf’s premier amateur events. The Silver Belle has grown from local to national to international stature. Many of its “alumni” play college golf as well as play on the LPGA, Symetra, and Legends Tours. There are U.S. Open champions, LPGA tournament winners, Solheim Cup and Curtis Cup team members, NCAA champions and many All-Americans. No matter the accolades, each will remember her Silver Belle experience. In 1998, the tournament was renamed The Joanne Winter Arizona Silver Belle Championship. In the words of its founder, “Thanks to all the young women who ever played in the Silver Belle. You made this experience a labor of love for me.”

Thank You Joanne — Your Dream Continues and the Future is Bright! 3rd Place (16-17) 1992 Kelly Heffer Green

Kachina Award early morning singer

The Early Morning (Talavai) Singer Kachina is

also noted as the Silent Kachina, even though it sings. It appears in pairs in the village, singing songs from the rooftops, waking people in the early morning. During the Bean Dance and other ceremonies it dances with other kachinas (Hopi word is katsina) and stands to one side of the procession. The most distinguishing characteristic of the Talavai Kachina is the Spruce tree he carries in his left hand and the

silver bell. It wears the red and white maiden’s robe typical for many kachinas that appear in the early morning. The awards are hand carved by Native Americans from the root of the Cottonwood tree. The Championship kachina was done by artist Elmer Adams. It comes directly from the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona and is special ordered through Lewis Traders of Holbrook, Ariz. Tyrone Duwyenie, who passed away in 2020, carved the smaller kachinas. Ty started carving kachinas around 1978 and it was his father that taught him how to make his first kachina at the age of 12. He was also a performing artist, singer and musician who resided in Scottsdale with his family. His carvings have been shown at the Heard Museum, the Festival of the Arts in Tempe, Pueblo Grande in Phoenix, Silverland and Turquoise Lady in Scottsdale, the Colorado Indian Market in Denver and the prestigious Indian Market in Sante Fe, N.M.
