VOICE OF CALOUNDRA BUSINESS HEARD s a Chamber, we have an obligation to ensure the voices of Caloundra-based small businesses are heard at the decision-making table of all three levels of Government.

A

Darby represent Caloundra and the wider Coast on the Premier and Attorney General’s liquor and gaming panel to ensure the concerns of the region’s hospitality industry are heard.

We achieve this at state and national level through our affiliation with the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland’s (CCIQ) Sunshine Coast Chambers Alliance. Our regular direct contact with local MPs is equally important.

Alongside our role as a facilitator of local networking events and meetings, the Caloundra Chamber also has an important role in championing Caloundra’s cause with the Council.

In conjunction with the other chambers in the region, we discuss the issues affecting business across the Sunshine Coast. From there, we formulate a position to take to the regional policy council and ultimately to CCIQ’s advocacy team, who then campaign on our joint behalf. This means, through these communication channels, we have a say when it comes to penalty rates, federal infrastructure projects (such as the Bruce Highway) and state issues such as workers’ compensation and liquor licensing. In addition to this, people like our own Bill

As the region continues to grow, this role has never been more important at a local government level. The Maroochydore Principal Activity Centre (PAC) has been mooted as the biggest advancement ‘game changer’ the modern Coast has ever seen. It is attracting laserfocused attention from Council, and rightly so. This, however, does not mean Caloundra’s role in the economy becomes any less important. In fact, our role becomes more important. We have the Sunshine Coast University Hospital on our doorstep, which will see an

influx of staff and their families heading to the region, creating more opportunities for local businesses and jobs for local people. Moreover, we continue to attract hordes of tourists every school holidays, staying in our hotel accommodation, enjoying our lovely beaches and dining in our cafes and restaurants. As a business community, we must remain in front of Council, pushing for funding for key infrastructure projects and ensuring we receive the attention the rest of the Coast does. If you are a business owner and want to have a say in the future of Caloundra and the wider region, please join the Chamber, because we would love to hear your contribution. Collectively, we have a much bigger voice than we do as individual operators working against each other.

YOUNG GUN MAKES HIS MARK ON CALOUNDRA Who says Gen Y is afraid of hard work? We chat to Drift Bar owner Shane Hepburn, who is shattering the stereotype with his business success. Queensland. He set up successful gigs for them from Tweed Heads to Noosa, and now as owner of Drift Bar, he carries on the live music mantle, by hosting gigs for guitarists, pianists, saxophone players and vocalists on weekends.

PASSION, DETERMINATION & HARD WORK When you meet Shane Hepburn for the first time, you could easily mistake the bearded, fresh-faced young man with a mop of strawberry-blonde hair and a dusting of freckles for one of his hospitality staff at Drift Bar. As the aroma of freshly blended coffee mixes with the smell of salty beach air, you kick back at Drift and take in the million dollar view of the Caloundra Pumicestone Passage. There is plenty to inhale, while waiting for your cooked breakfast, in comfortable alfresco furniture on Bulcock Beach Esplanade. Shane, a Caloundra local, knows all about spectacular views enjoyed by millionaires – he’s seen most of them while working on super yachts in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean and Miami. He met his beloved wife, Tiffanie, when she was working as a steward on a super yacht in Monaco. When Shane delivers your delicious gourmet breakfast and hot coffee, with a bonus chocolate freckle, he flashes one of his genuinely optimistic smiles. You recognise the 6

NUMBERS COUNT At just 28, Shane is a Gen Y entrepreneur, with a marketing degree from the University of the Sunshine Coast and four successful businesses under his belt. One of his businesses, The Good Bean Espresso Bar at Mooloolaba, turns over $1 million a year, serves 7000 coffees each week and won a tourism award in its first 12 months of trading. Shane cut his marketing teeth by scoring the distribution rights for ska and jazz band The Cat Empire, when they toured South-East

Shane says: “Passion, determination and hard work are my own personal keys to success.” And when he talks about hard work, he really means it – serving customers and doing book work for 16 to 20 hours a day. Shane sets a cracking pace, serving thousands of coffees per week and making sure business hums along smoothly at his coffee shops in Caloundra and Mooloolaba, as well as running a management consultancy and a coffee distribution business. He has the modern Nike consciousness – a “Just Do It” attitude – as well as social consciousness. Shane donates money from business tips to local causes such as the fundraising effort for Finn Smith, a Maroochydore toddler suffering from Meningococcal disease, and the Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Foundation.

FUTURE PLANS Is Shane Hepburn drifting along in life? No way. Shane has his sights set on the “big business fish” he wants to catch, compass in place, hand firmly in control on the ship’s wheel, with a good south-easterly headwind to take him all the way to the finish! GROWING BUSINESSES IN A FERTILE MICROCLIMATE Luke Bartlett from Forty Five 51 is the new president of CALM, a collaborative group of licensed venues and regulatory authorities. He shares his collaborative approach to business below. uke Bartlett, 40, new president of CALM (Collaborative Approach to Liquor Management) is a “green-thumbed” entrepreneur.

L

He is always growing his own collective of businesses, while encouraging like-minded Caloundra businesses to grow with him. Luke’s businesses (retail and sales company LESC IT, consultancy JAYB Enterprises and tapas bar Forty Five 51) turn over about $1 million a year, with 25 staff on the books so far. Each week, he and his business partner/wife, Katrina, turn over about 100 kilos of calamari, 400 beer bottles and several kegs. They met at high school, became an item at Schoolies Week and he proposed on New Year’s Eve at Maleny Folk Festival. Altogether, they have three businesses, three children and six pets to manage, with a couple of new projects to announce in the second half of this year. “We have worked shoulder-to-shoulder in every venture. I couldn’t do any of it without her,” Luke says. “Katrina has worked in finance for large and small businesses for the majority of her professional career.” In business Luke, who has a masters degree in management, practises something similar to the concept of companion planting in permaculture gardening.

Simultaneously, Luke is aware of the fertile

Caloundra “microclimate” his and other businesses operate in, and he is prepared to be a voice for them through CALM. CALM was initiated six years ago for liquor licensees to find solutions to alcohol-related issues. Luke is keen to expand its role.

HEDGED INVESTMENT

It’s called hedged investment, which means growing different “crops” (businesses) in the same space, but at different levels, to increase the odds of yield.

Many business plans have been discussed and debated, while walking along the boardwalk between Bulcock and Kings Beaches.

BOUTIQUE CRAFT BEERS At Forty Five 51, Luke encourages people to try one of 50 thirst-quenching boutique craft beers, while enjoying a delicious tapas menu and live entertainment. A breakfast menu is also on the horizon. “Our tapas bar is the only Sunshine Coast venue that is part of Brewsvegas, a craft beer celebration involving breweries and venues in South-East Queensland,” he says.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BUSINESS SO FAR Luke was attracted to Caloundra by the growth of the Caloundra Music Festival, and says it is a privilege to operate his businesses here. “I have built on that growth factor at our tapas bar, offering a live entertainment schedule, running events at Caloundra Fringe Festival and we took Forty Five 51 on tour, at Caloundra Music Festival,” he says. www.facebook.com/FortyFive51

CELEBRATING MUM This Mother’s Day we chat to four local mumss from different walks of life about how they balance work and family. Vivianne Diwalibi Mama, Vati, Mater, Omma, Mere, Mum… In any language, the word mother means to nurture, create and protect, give birth to; or display maternal affection. Caloundra Bulk Billing Surgery owner and manager Vivianne Diwalibi has been known as a ‘Refugee Mama’ to hundreds of children in orphanages on three continents. These homeless infants were rescued and supported by Vivianne and a team of United Nations workers over two decades, everywhere from Sudan to Armenia, Bosnia, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. NOBEL PEACE PRIZE: Not many people in Caloundra have actually seen a Nobel Peace Prize, let alone received one for their contribution to humanity. Vivianne has her 1981 Nobel Peace Prize proudly on display in the foyer of her bulk billing practice premises at 68 Bulcock Street. This grandchild of Syrian refugees, who grew up in Sudan in Central Africa, was appalled when she discovered impoverished citizens in different countries. HEART BREAKING CONDITIONS: “My main concerns were women, children and the elderly,” Vivianne says. “Many children in orphanages lived in heartbreaking conditions. “They existed in high poverty with no electricity, no food, harsh weather conditions, and no shoes in either a cold, snow-covered country or desert situations.” Vivianne felt compelled to do something about improving their situation and the rest is history. After helping refugees for most of her life – especially in Sudan where she worked in the field with 2.5 million refugees – Vivianne

and her husband and d son later became refugees themselves. They moved to Sydney in 1999 due to o her now late husband’s poor health. h. Following her husband’s nd’s death Vivianne moved to the Sunshine ne Coast, where she nurtures the health and nd well-being well being of Caloundra and Cooroy residents. Her ‘Health Mama’ focus is on providing affordable health care and access to allied health care practitioners such as dietitians and chiropractors. Vivianne’s Caloundra surgery was awarded Professional Business of the Year in the 2011 Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Awards. Sally Desch Kawana home-based business mum Sally Desch is enjoying the best of both worlds! She appreciates her Sunshine Coast lifestyle, which involves raising a young family and running a consultancy business in the same arena as major players like Hayes and Manpower. “I think with national broadband access and technology these days you don’t need to be based in a major city,” Sally says.

ROLE MODEL: Because Sally is a strong role model in the home, her 4-year-old daughter Gabby now talks about sending emails off with resumes when she is playing. “Gabby will probably be running my consultancy business by the time she is 12!” Sally says. MOTHERS DAY: Sally says Mother’s Day will mean enjoying something her children (Gabby and Lachlan, two) have made and are proud of, such as a cooked breakfast or home-made card.

FIVE-YEAR PLAN: Sally’s long-term plan is to expand nationally, and perhaps internationally. “The next six months will see me put some plans in place,” she says.

Sally Fiona Gregory Juggling six children, two international students, four pets and real estate clients is a numbers game for ‘Brady Bunch’ mum Fiona Gregory. When Fiona and Tim Gregory, who were both widowed, married two years ago, they blended their families – she had four children and he had two. With three girls and three boys, their six offspring now resemble The Brady Bunch. The Gregorys speak five languages – Hungarian, Italian, German, French and Mandarin – and when they met Fiona and Tim couldn’t believe how much they had in common. Both were recovering from the loss of their partners to cancer after almost 30 years of marriage, both worked in real estate, loved Indian food and had moved to the Sunshine Coast to start afresh – Fiona from Brisbane and Tim from Sydney.

They both strive to give each client their full attention. “Treating people’s skin is personal; it’s about connection,” Breana says. SKIN PROTECTION: Robyn says it is lovely to want to come to work each day to pamper clients aged from 12 to 90 years. “Breana and I usually achieve results for clients once they follow a consistent skin care regime,” she says. “Committed clients experience great results in six months.” FUTURE GROWTH: At this stage Pampered Lady consists of Robyn, Breana and one other staff member, but they are experiencing constant growth. “In the future, we will look at duplicating our business model elsewhere on the Sunshine Coast,” Robyn says. It was encouraging to see that construction is also anticipated to see very strong growth over the coming four years.

mentioned in my last Buzz column that several indicators suggest 2014 will be a fruitful one for the Caloundra business community, with business confidence at its highest in a long time, interest rates remaining low, tourism on the rise, new infrastructure projects under construction and more.

I

The recent CommSec State of the States report also puts Queensland at the top of the economic growth ladder. It found that Queensland is leading the way in business investment, with spending in the September quarter at approximately 27 per cent above decade-average levels.

In addition to the above positive economic influences I was pleased to recently read another independent report confirming Queensland’s bright outlook for a strong economy. The Deloitte ‘Access Economics Business Outlook: December 2013’ report confirmed Queensland is set to be the fastest growing state economy in 2014/15 with an anticipated growth rate of 3.6 per cent.

Though Caloundra businesses may not yet have seen direct outcomes, these figures are a good indicator of future growth. My column also talked about the need for the Sunshine Coast and in particular Caloundra to ‘reset its compass’, in preparation for imminent growth, particularly in new trading sectors and more importantly, asks the question – how does Caloundra need to prepare? How does

Bulcock Street need to change and evolve to prepare for such growth to ensure we get an adequate portion of the Sunshine Coast’s economic action? The key message being – the time for action is upon us. I am delighted to see that the Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council has proactively taken the next critical step in this process and engaged consultants to undertake a study on the ‘Economic Revitalisation of Caloundra CBD’. As Caloundra has been designated a future growth area in the South-East Queensland Plan, largely due to the Caloundra South development, it is essential we get the planning right and I encourage all residents, property owners and traders to get involved in this process.

HEALTH EXPO ATTRACTS INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION The Sunshine Coast’s own Healthy Lifestyle expo provides balanced, integrative health information. he Sunshine Coast Healthy Lifestyle Expo at The Events Centre Caloundra is expected to grow from 1,000 to 10,000 visitors by 2017.

FAILING TO PLAN IS PLANNING TO FAIL The current climate presents a wealth of opportunity for Caloundra. It’s time for the business community to work together to achieve it. By Bill Darby MBA MAICD, Caloundra Chamber Of Commerce Tourism & Events Chair ight now, we are all being presented with an amazing opportunity to help shape Caloundra’s future. The region’s first new, integrated planning scheme has just been approved by the State Government. The Council has a newly established executive planning group for ‘4551’ and Caloundra Chamber is undertaking its comprehensive CBD revitalisation study, with the nationally accredited Pracsys Group.

It’s been almost a decade since the 2004 Caloundra City Plan was gazetted and if we look back, there’s certainly been a lot of change. Caloundra has been amalgamated with Maroochy Shire, Stockland’s massive Caloundra South project is under the control of the State’s Urban Land Development Authority and we have Australia’s largest construction project, the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital, being built on our doorstep. With all this growth comes incredible opportunity, but it also brings significant risk. The traditional Caloundra CBD we all know 12

could well become the vibrant heart of the southern Sunshine Coast of the future. Equally, there is the possibility that shiny new developments to the west and to the north, may lure our businesses away once and for all. If we fail to recognise these risks now, we can, and most likely will, fall into the same trap as many traditional strip shopping centres have before us. Let’s just say, there’s a lot to be learnt from how Redcliffe suffered, as the popularity of North Lakes grew and grew. As stakeholders in Caloundra, it’s critical that we identify the most effective ways to ensure our CBD comes out a winner, because if we don’t, nobody else will. As a result of Council amalgamation, Caloundra might have gained the efficiencies that come from a regional local government and from regional destination marketing, but it’s lost the local representation it once had. Preserving the culture of Caloundra, promoting the town’s unique business and tourism offerings, and engaging in healthy competition for events and other growth opportunities have been

lost. To me, this highlights how important it is to become involved and support advocacy groups such as the Chamber of Commerce. As business people, our time is precious. It seems as each year passes, we’re expected to do more, know more and be quicker at it. Expenses rise, revenues shrink and margins fade. In saying that, what’s the point of working hard in business if not for a better future? One way we can contribute practically and meaningfully to future planning outcomes is through the Caloundra CBD Revitalisation Study. A simple survey can be found at culturecounts.cc/survey/caloundra, which provides a framework of questions customised to the respondent and gets us thinking about Caloundra’s competitive strengths and weaknesses. Although funded by Council, the Chamber of Commerce is spearheading this initiative to fully understand Caloundra CBD’s future potential. Its mission is to identify what

What are the town’s unique selling propositions, and what actually defines a successful future for Caloundra? opportunities are available to Caloundra in the coming decades and where the looming threats lie. What are the town’s unique selling propositions, who are our competitors and more importantly, what actually defines a successful future for Caloundra? In the new Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme, for example, it is expected that parts of central Caloundra and Kings Beach will be identified as designated hospitality precincts. This could well provide investors with the confidence to consider Caloundra beaches as very attractive locations, for developing much better hospitality infrastructure. As population pressure is applied to Caloundra, through the growth of

surrounding residential communities, it makes sense that our beaches become vibrant tourism and hospitality nodes. This is especially the case if professional services and other businesses relocate to the newer surrounding enterprise hubs such as Innovation Parkway at Kawana. As it stands now, one of Caloundra’s biggest weaknesses is its ageing infrastructure. Older buildings with dated architecture are no match for the abundance of A-grade office space and the big refurbished shopping centres surrounding us. Conversely, if we master-planned now – similar to the way Melbourne did in the early 1990s – our laneways and quirky-looking buildings could become canvasses for street art and the frame upon which great hospitality and entertainment infrastructure is built. Let’s also remember the unique fact that Caloundra has an abundance of Councilowned land around the CBD, which could easily be repurposed to include tourism, hospitality and leisure development. This is only one vision for Caloundra, of course. There are no doubt many other equally worthy and aspirational views on what the Caloundra of the future will look like. What is your vision?

SURF LEGENDS CELEBRATE 40TH ANNIVERSARY The Pa & Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest celebrates a milestone at Moffat Beach this April. It attracted every professional surfer in the country, including Wayne (Rabbit) Bartholomew, Simon Anderson and Hawaiian legend Gerry Lopez.

hen it comes to surfing, are you a legend or a master? The Pa & Ma Bendall Surf Classic, the second longest running surfing contest in Australia, will celebrate its 40th anniversary at Moffat Beach from April 18 to 21 with $15,000 in prize money on offer – a legendary growth from the original $1500 offered in 1974.

This surf contest, with categories including 50+ Legends, 40+ Masters, Women’s Open, Under 16 Boys and more, has made a significant contribution to the community fabric of Caloundra, by raising the profile of the region through international publicity. The first Pa Bendall Memorial Contest was held at Moffat Beach in February 1974.

‘Pa’ was the grandad of surfing in Queensland. He and his wife Marjory (Ma) settled in Caloundra in the 1950s. There were only a handful of other surfers living locally at the time, and they became the mother and father of surfing on the Sunshine Coast.

MOFFATEERS Pa formed the ‘Moffateers’ in 1966, as a club to promote integrity and sportsmanship in surfing. He encouraged the surfing youth to maintain their good character by offering them free membership to the club. Pa encouraged the young Moffateers to compete in regional, state and national championships.

SPECIAL CELEBRITY GUESTS Special guests at this year’s 40th Anniversary Contest will include Richard Harvey, the inaugural winner of the 1974 event and another ’74 contender Terry Fitzgerald.

Participants will also remember past 1975 winner Michael Peterson, whose mother Joan will attend in his honour. Event organiser, Daryn Fissendon said the top entertainment line-up from 18-21 April, would include the Celibate Rifles performing at the Kings Beach Tavern.

Caloundra’s Rumba Beach Resort was one of nine Sunshine Coast tourism operators who promoted our region to more than 15,000 Kiwi consumers on a recent trade mission, at events like the Flight Centre Travel Expo in Auckland. This event gave tour operators an ideal platform to promote their products directly to the New Zealand public. The trip was organised by Sunshine Coast Destination Limited (SCDL) in partnership with Tourism and Events Queensland. It involved displays and presentations at several trade fairs. To encourage a boost in visitor numbers, direct Air New Zealand flights will recommence from Auckland to the Sunshine Coast on 27 June and will run until 26 October 2014. The schedule will include three flights per week during peak period.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU BAREFOOT BRIDE WEDDINGS Joanna Watkins of Buddina creates beautiful weddings for brides! In our Q & A session she shares her passion for bringing couples together on the Coast. What inspired you to start Barefoot Bride Weddings? I had been working in the wedding industry for nearly 15 years as a makeup artist and decided I was ready for a change. I have always been interested in event planning and design, so creating Barefoot Bride Weddings felt like a natural progression. The packages I offer include chairs, decorations, set-up and pack-down on location. I can also arrange council permits, marriage celebrants and recommend a range of wedding professionals on the Coast. It’s such a special moment when it all comes together on the day. I get to see the smiling faces of the bride and groom.

What is your most memorable wedding moment? There are too many to choose from! But I’d have to say my very first ceremony, at Shelly Beach, was the most memorable. I woke to a sky full of dark black clouds and totally freaked out. My husband, the Weather Guru, assured me it wasn’t going to rain. Thankfully he was right. The ceremony was a success. The bride and groom were very happy customers, and looming clouds added a nice touch of drama to the photos.

What are your top five wedding locations in the Caloundra area? Shelly Beach, Moffat Beach, Golden Beach, La Balsa Park and Point Cartwright.

MIXING METEOROLOGY AND ART Local surf photographer Karl Angell always has one eye on the e weather, looking for the perfect conditions to capture his next shot. urrimundi surf photographer Karl Angell is part artist, part meteorologist.

He studies wind direction, tide swells, moon and sun positions, and beach locations after hours and on weekends, before capturing mother nature in all her glory on a Canon 7D DSLR with SPL water housing and a Tokina 10-17mm fisheye lens.

How did it all start?

“I would love to open my gallery cafe at either Bulcock or Moffat Beach in a few years’ time,” Karl says.

At the ripe old age of 16 years Karl moved from Maleny to Moreton Island, where he landed a dream job photographing dolphin feeding, dugongs and humpback whales, as well as helicopter tours, at the Tangalooma Resort.

“Friends and family, like my elderly grandmother Erla, often give me vintage cameras to display.

Karl’s photos evoke a sense of wonder, similar to how you might feel when you watch fireworks go up into the night sky.

“I also go to garage sales and swap meets to buy them, so my café camera collection is expanding all the time.”

Weather certainly has a huge impact on his life. Whether Karl is shooting adrenaline-pumping surf photos in the ocean, serving customers at The Caloundra Street Fair markets or working in his landscape gardening business, he always keeps an eye on the horizon.

The challenges of being a surf photographer

This first-time dad recently welcomed his baby daughter in January on the hottest day of the summer, when the mercury soared to 44.6 degrees in the shade. “I hope my daughter, Lily Nerida, who was born at the pinnacle of the summer heat wave, shares my passion for catching waves in the surf and on camera when she grows up,” he says.

Karl’s gallery café dream Currently in the pipeline is Karl’s dream to combine his passion for surf photography with his eclectic vintage camera collection and love of caffeine in one location – a gallery café. He hopes to build on his fan base from the Sunday Caloundra Street Fair market stall when this

Karl was part of a team of nine photographers who captured photos of resort guests and printed them as souvenirs of family holidays.

During the past decade there have been some physical challenges for surf photographer Karl.

His photographic journey continued when he landed a gig at Australia Zoo, where he met his lovely wife Gina. For three years, Karl took photos on whale-spotting boats and of tourists patting tortoises and turtles.

“I have dislocated my shoulder shooting photos inside the tube of a wave, that was about four metres high, during Cyclone Hamish in Noosa in 2012,” says Karl.

“Being a good photographer is a mix of creativity and technical skills – you need to determine the exact timing for the best light and the angle to get the best result,” he says.

“Apart from the threat of being dumped by a wave, there is the risk of sharks and stingrays to consider.

“However, sometimes photography is about good luck – being in the right place at the right time!”

“I was stabbed in the leg by a stingray a few years ago, so now I wear reef boots and a wet suit for protection.” Apart from his main lens focus – surf photos – Karl is always looking for a shot of the perfect storm. He says his wife Gina encourages and supports him to take surf photos but his Mum and Dad, Annette and Peter, still get worried when he shoots photos in the eye of a cyclone.
