Throughout this year some teachers have been trialling the use of the Realsmart in their lessons. In April the team of presented their ideas to the rest of the staff at our INSET day. This was met with lots of enthusiasm! During this term we have been undergoing more training and subject departments are planning how they will make the most of Real Smart to support student learning from September 2014.
Initially, we will focus our attention on Years 7 and 12 but we may also be adding resources to other year groups as appropriate.
This booklet outlines some of the main features available to your daughter. With cloud storage, selfpaced courses (RAFLs) and collaborative apps such as Google Docs we are sure that she will find it to be an invaluable part of her earning toolkit.

Logging into the homepage: The username format is initial, dot, surname. E.g. j.bloggs (If your daughter usually has to put any numbers after their surname when logging onto a school computer then they so need to include this in their username when logging on to the VLE).
Your daughterâ€™s Realsmart password has been set to â€˜passwordâ€™ by default and should be changed to a unique and strong password as soon as possible.

Google Drive provides your daughter with unlimited file storage for Google files and 5GB for all other types. File sharing is simple and Google Docs are ideal for collaborative projects. Store any file and see it on any device—Your files can be accessed using any smartphone, tablet, or computer. So wherever you go, your files follow. The only requirement is an internet connection. Easily share files and folders –Invite others to view, download, and collaborate –no email attachment needed. Collaborate—work on the same document in real-time. You can chat and comment too! You’ll be amazed when you see character by character typing and instant updates!
The right tool for the right job:
Docs - Create rich documents with images, tables, equations, drawings, links and more. Gather input and manage feedback with social commenting.
Sheets - Keep and share spread sheets,. Use tools like advanced formulas, embedded charts, filters and pivot tables to get new perspectives on your data.
Slides - Create beautiful slides with the presentation editor, which supports Youtube embedded videos, animations and dynamic slide transitions. Publish your presentations on the web so anyone can view them, or share them with individuals, the choice is yours.
Forms - Create a survey or quiz and collect the responses in a Google Docs spreadsheet for analysis. Fantastic for research projects.
RAFL RAFLs allow teachers to link learning objectives with lesson activities and provide a structured course for students to make reference to. RAFLs can be shared within a department , to provide a consistent set of course requirements for . Using an online course not only allows teachers to support students more effectively but also provides opportunities for extension work if students should need it. Students are able submit their work online and this can then be teacher, self or peer assessed depending on the requirements of the teacher. Student submissions can be
in the form of different media types e.g. documents, web addresses, video files etc. This provides a variety of ways to demonstrate her progress. The self-assessment tool promotes student reflection of their learning and the steps they need to take to make more progress. Teachers can monitor student self-assessments and view any evidence they may have uploaded. This helps to inform teacher planning and allows lessons to be tailored more closely to the needs of the students.
RWEB RWEBs are simple websites, created using the Realsmart ‘Create Menu’. These are a quick and easy way to share information such as text, files, pictures, video or even flash animations . Students could use these to provide create mediarich learning portfolios, websites, reflective blogs, personal profiles and planners.
Users have the option to keep RWEBs private until they are ready to be published. It’s then possible to share the website with individuals, a group or a number of groups. Student can also add a comments feature to engage their audience and to allow teachers to provide feedback.
RMAP RMAP is part of the Realsmart ‘Create’ menu and is a powerful yet simple graphical organiser. RMAP is perfect for creating mind-maps and flow diagrams. Students and teachers can display concepts, units of work, projects, models or tasks etc. Students can also use RMAPs to revise their courses and even collaborate with their peers too.

RPASSPORT RPASSPORTs are a great way of recording progress when working towards a goal. Each student’s RPASSPORT is be made up of collection of badges which represent a piece of evidence or ‘story’. Students share stories about their qualities, characteristics and habits. These accumulate to demonstrate the range of a student’s skills and abilities . The RPASSPORTs will track a student’s achievements throughout their time in school. Great for when students need to write a personal statement!
The RPASSPORTs are currently being used in Year 7 as a way of recording extracurricular ventures and enrichment activities as part of tutor time. They and are soon to be introduced in the reception classes as a part of the EYFS monitoring. We will be running a session for parents of Junior school students nearer the time, so they can get involved with this too. Teachers can upload text as well as media-rich content such as photos or videos to act as evidence. They can also monitor overviews of RPASSPORT pages and mark student progress as milestones.
