American Patchwork & Quilting | Quilt Sampler | Quilts and More

Project: Floral Nine-Patch To make this stash-busting quilt, choose a favorite multi-color print and pull colors from it. Avoid the temptation to match fabrics; just use a merry mix of colors and prints. Use up to three-dozen different fabrics in an abundance of florals and small scale prints to create your own flower garden.

Materials • 11⁄3 yards total assorted light • • • •

prints (blocks) 41⁄4 yards total assorted medium and dark prints and florals (blocks) 2 ⁄3 yard green print (binding) 47⁄8 yards backing fabric 70x88" batting

Finished Quilt: 63 1⁄2 x811⁄2" Finished Blocks: 9" square Quantities are for 44/45"-wide, 100% cotton fabrics. Measurements include 1⁄4" seam allowances. Sew with right sides together unless otherwise stated.

Cut Fabrics

Cut fabrics in the following order. From assorted light prints, cut: • 128—31⁄2" squares From assorted medium and dark prints and florals, cut: • 31—101⁄4" squares, cutting each diagonally twice in an X for a total of 124 triangles • 160—31⁄2" squares From green print, cut: • 8—21⁄2x42" binding strips

Assemble Nine-Patch Blocks

1. Referring to Diagram 1 for

placement, lay out four assorted light print 31⁄2" squares and five assorted medium and dark print and floral 31⁄2" squares in three horizontal rows. 2. Sew together squares in

each row. Press seams in one direction, alternating direction with each row. 3. Join rows to make a Nine-Patch

block. Press seams in one direction. The block should be 91⁄2" square including seam allowance. 4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to

make 32 Nine-Patch blocks total.

Assemble Hourglass Blocks

1. Sew together a medium print or

floral triangle and a dark print or floral triangle to make a triangle pair (Diagram 2). Press seam toward darker triangle. Repeat to make 62 triangle pairs total.

Assemble Quilt Top

1. Referring to Quilt Assembly

Diagram for placement, lay out blocks in nine horizontal rows, alternating Nine-Patch blocks and hourglass blocks. 2. Sew together blocks in each row.

Press seams toward hourglass blocks. 3. Join rows to complete quilt top.

Press seams in one direction.

Finish Quilt

1. Layer quilt top, batting, and

backing; baste. 2. Quilt as desired. Machine-quilter

Rebekah Osowick stitched a stylized medallion in each NinePatch block and a free-form floral design in each hourglass block. 3. Using diagonal seams, join green

21⁄2 x42” binding strips to make a pieced binding strip. Bind with pieced binding strip.

2. Join two triangle pairs to make

an hourglass block (Diagram 3). Press seam in one direction. The hourglass block should be 91⁄2" square including seam allowances. Repeat to make 31 hourglass blocks total.
