pull us in. It is something we have got to keep working at, there are still KPI requirements we must meet every rolling four week period.”
Immingham Transport joined the roll-out pilot after it was launched at The Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham, and it is a standard that now sets it apart in the logistics-focused region.
The oldest vehicle in the fleet is just a year old, with sixty vehicles on either 17, 67 or 18 plates, aiding the maintenance element significantly with all under maintenance agreements from the manufacturers.
Kevin Donovan, Compliance Manager, said: “We are really pleased about it. It means we are seen as an exemplar operator, there is a very high standard audit system in place and we need to comply with key performance indicators across maintenance and driver tachograph information and behaviour. No-one else has this in our area.” As reported, the Trinity House firm - located just off the overhauled A160 port and refinery link road - has recently been acquired by NTEX in an undisclosed deal. It not only provides ambient warehousing, full and part load service together with an overnight Pallet network across the UK & Europe, it also has an in-house approved Driver CPC training arm. Mr Donovan said he had heard the scheme was being established at a conference, and the Management team talked about how they could achieve it. “We do everything we can to go above what is expected for compliance. It is an important factor nowadays. “They have really wanted to help us,” he said of the DVSA. “They clearly wanted someone in our industry in our area We joined the pilot scheme and they helped us with that. “There are many plusses for us. We will save on down time. There should be no reason why the DVSA will

FOUR QUESTIONS WITH... JOE FRANCIS, HENDERSON INSURANCE BROKERS LTD, AN AON COMPANY How long have you been a part of the insurance industry, and how did you get involved? – I joined Henderson Insurance Brokers in 2007 at the age of 18, straight out of college. I was actually on holiday on Newquay with friends at the time when my parents spotted a job advert for a trainee broker in the local paper. 11 years have passed but I still believe I’m 18. What’s the one piece of advice you would offer to anyone starting up in business? Be yourself, be transparent and be fair. It sounds really cliché doesn’t it, but for me it’s really important that you connect with people and that they buy in to you as an individual. Do you have a favourite business book? With two small children (My eldest, Olly, is approaching 4, and my youngest, James, is soon to turn 1) I don’t get the time to read. As soon as my head hits the pillow of an evening I’m fast asleep. I do read every night to the boys though which is normally The Gruffalo or Funny Bones. What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without? Obviously the most important thing is my family, but I have to confess that I’m a computer game nerd and do really love spending some down time on my Playstation or Xbox. And just to put the record straight, Xbox is better than Playstation…

Congratulations JAMES CARTWRIGHT, PERSPECTIVE DESIGN What sparked the idea to start your own business? Both myself and my wife, Diane, were teachers in secondary schools. I taught ICT and Maths for 13 years. When we had children we decided that things needed to change otherwise we would miss out on their childhood, so we took the leap into starting our own business! We wanted to change our own lifestyle so we looked to create a business to help other business owners to do the same. What was your first ‘real’ job growing up? Forgetting the obligatory paper rounds as a child, my first real job was working as a part time builders labourer for £2/hour. I perfected my tea making abilities and did a lot of fetching, carrying, lifting and passing tools! If you have read one, what would you say is your favourite business book? I’m not sure if I have one favourite but I’m currently reading ‘Give and Take’ by Adam Grant which is a very interesting read and is all about how helping other people can drive our own success.

What’s the one thing you couldn’t live without? I think I’d have to say my wife. (I hope she’s reading this!) Working in a small business can be very isolating, so it’s good to have a sounding board for ideas, frustrations and successes and she provides all of this.

This probably sounds like a dream compared to our experience of daily life. Our culture values busyness, the overzealous achiever and omnipresent communication on electronic devices. We boast about how busy we are, and how little free time we have. We dream about long holidays or winning the lottery so we can escape our frantic lives. We’ve come to believe that times of slowing down are irresponsible, lazy or selfish. Rest is seen as worthwhile only if it helps us recharge our batteries for the next period of productivity. Thomas Merton, another early 20th century writer, said “Work is good and necessary, but too much of it renders the soul insensitive to spiritual values and hardens the heart against divine things. It requires serious effort to resist this hardening of the heart”. You mightn’t buy into his faith perspective but what he says about overworking is important. We all need space to ‘be’ rather than ‘do’ – space where we stop thinking about our workload, engaging with social media, or worrying about the people we need to call. This space needn’t be filled with ‘nothing’ - we all have activities that give us back more than they take, whether cycling or crochet, movies or coffee, watching the world go by or sleeping..... Is finding space in life your final frontier? P6

SK Continue Their Support for Apprentices Sylvester Keal have recently welcomed two new apprentices to the business, as part of their vision to nurture young individuals wishing to pursue a career in the catering equipment industry. Ben McDougall and Holly Dales have both joined Sylvester Keal on a Business Administration apprenticeship, in partnership with the Grimsby Institute of Further Education. Despite taking on the same apprenticeship, the two apprentices are working in different departments, with Ben based in the Service Department and Holly in the Sales Department. Martyn Keal, Managing Director at Sylvester Keal, said: “At Sylvester Keal, we are constantly encouraging young people to start an apprenticeship with us, as we are very passionate about providing the younger generation with the opportunity to grow and develop. “We are delighted that Ben and Holly have joined us on an apprenticeship, and they are both picking things up very quickly and learning a lot about the industry.” In his role, Ben is the first point of contact when customers phone up the department in the event of equipment
£3,000 for young people in Westcliff The Arc in Westcliff, Scunthorpe has been awarded a £3,000 grant from The Tribune Trust, to spend on activities for young people living locally. The Tribune Trust is a registered charity that gives grants to help groups and communities reduce crime and make their areas safer. It’s made up of the High Sheriffs of the East Riding of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, Humberside Police and the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service. It’s also supported by local business people. How the money will be spent has not yet been decided, but ideas include sports, crafts, gaming, cooking and trips out to the seaside. Kerry Copson, Community Development Manager at Ongo said: “We’re so grateful to the Tribune Trust for awarding us this grant, and we can’t thank them enough.

breakdowns or for general enquiries. He also contacts customers to advise when the engineers will be attending and provides updates should there be any delays. Holly on the other hand has been working alongside Lisa in the Sales Department, and covers the telesales operation for the business. She has rapidly built up a relationship with customers and colleagues, and is quickly building up her product knowledge with the help of the buying team. At the end of their apprenticeships, Ben will gain a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Business Administration and Holly will have a City & Guilds Level 2 certificate in Sales. Martyn added: “Both Ben and Holly have settled into their roles very quickly, and have shown enthusiasm and commitment to work when in the office. We are all very pleased with how they have performed so far, and we are looking forward to seeing them progress even further.
“We’re working really hard to engage with hard to reach young people in the area, so by letting them choose their own activities and be involved in planning them, we’re hoping to grow those relationships and provide as much support as we can.” John Ford, the Director of the Tribune Trust said: “The Tribune Trust is very pleased to be able to work with Ongo Communities and support them in engaging with young people from the local area. “Ongo Communities and the Tribune Trust share a common desire to improve the lives of people living in North Lincolnshire and to provide opportunities for young people to progress.” To start with The Arc will receive £2,000, and then depending on the success of the project and participation, they’ll be awarded a further £1,000. The grant will be spread out over 12 months to allow long term activities to take place. To find out more about The Arc, follow them on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, or visit arcwestcliff.co.uk.

Are you in the zone?
The ‘stretch zone’ is where the magic happens! We are motivated, challenged, take risks and are inspired to perform at our highest. In the workplace, in sport, in relationships, this is where we can get the best out of ourselves and other people - we are literally stretching, developing and pushing to succeed in whatever we have set our mind to.
We might think about being in the ‘zone’ in the context of sport and hitting the point of being really focussed, determined and in tune with our body and mind. However there are different zones that we can be in and all affect our performance The ‘strain zone’ and the ‘panic either negatively or positively. zone’ are the zones where we start to see performance reduce and If you are in the ‘rust zone’ you may anxiety increase. Being in the be bored, uninspired, unmotivated strain zone short term means we and literally rusting! This could be are working under pressure that in a work context, in a relationship is more than we can realistically or in life in general. When in this cope with but we may be working zone our performance is low and to a deadline, or an audit and so it can be a stressful place for some, there is an end in sight. We might especially if ordinarily you are have short periods of strain in our someone who likes to feel engaged relationships too due to tensions and valued in what you do. and difficulties. However, long term, being in the strain zone or I often hear people refer to the next tipping in to the panic zone can zone - the ‘comfort zone’ - being in impact on our mental and physical it, being nervous about something health and we may become anxious, outside of it, stepping out of it low in mood, have an inability to or wanting to be out of it. The cope, become exhausted, struggle comfort zone, is, well, comfortable. to sleep, our eating may be affected, It is a place where we don’t feel we can burn out and as a result be challenged, but for the most part, physically unwell too. we like to be in it, however our performance is about average - we In essence we need to be aware of are not pushed or pushing ourselves which zone we are in and for how and so we tend to sit back. long. If we spend too much time in the rust or comfort zone, stepping out of these can become anxiety provoking and change can become really challenging - what if I can’t do it? What if it doesn’t work out? What if people judge me? (Anxiety loves ‘what if?’).
P11
If we perform more highly in the stretch zone then surely we need to be there all the time? Well, actually being able to step back into our comfort zone, or recognise that where something may have stretched us, it no longer does and is now in our comfort
zone, means we can step in and out enabling us to recover, evolve and grow. Some questions for consideration for you or people in your organisation could be - which zone you are in at the moment? Are you content there? How easily do you move through the zones? What do you need more or less of? Are you in the same zone in all areas of life? Are you stuck in a particular zone
and know it is affecting your health and wellbeing? If you feel you need to, what could you do to make positive changes? If you can think about small steps or quick wins then these may be something you can do to make changes quite quickly and you can start to feel more in control, more motivated and your performance will increase.

What is hypnotherapy and how does it work? Hypnotherapy seems to have a bit of a strange reputation, there are some odd bods within the field who like to wear capes, weird shirts and promote a leftfield approach. There are also the hypnotherapists who prefer a clinical, evidenced based approach. I come from the latter school of thought, I have never had people acting like a chicken or trying to lap dance me, well not in a hypnotherapy session anyway! Hypnotherapy is like a guided meditation with a specific goal in mind, e.g. to affect change, release trauma, reduce anxiety or reduce pain, whatever is required. Hypnotherapy is such a versatile method of therapy, that it can almost be tailored to anything and anyone, giving clients and therapists great flexibility in addressing concerns. A client recently said that she loves coming to my sessions as she does not have to regurgitate, relive or unpick her experience. She just sits and relaxes, while I talk away to her, her mind does the work while her thinking and perception change. A common misconception is that hypnotherapists can see inside your head, or they can change things that you might not want to change. This is totally incorrect, you all know how pig headed our minds can be? Getting it to stop thinking at ridiculous o-clock or trying to think of an answer which is on the tip of your tongue. A hypnotherapy session involves a therapist guiding your thoughts, however, it is your mind which creates the images and gives you the answers. I may never know what the answers are, unless you tell me what you have seen or if I ask specific questions, with your permission of course. Hypnotherapy offers a solution focused approach, rather than a psychoanalytical approach. Hypnotherapy may reveal the root cause of an issue, which can then be tackled either in therapy or not, dependant on what you decide to do with that information and how it is affecting you. Hypnotherapy works so well for people in business, due to its rapid nature. As soon as we begin the therapy you are relaxing, destressing and giving your brain an opportunity to file and sort images, conversations and experiences. There is a common misconception nowadays that we are
all robots, we are not, and we can only go at a superfast pace for so long. How many times have you gone on leave and then come down with an illness? This demonstrates that we often run ourselves on our borrowed energy. Us Brits tend to have a reactive approach to our mental health and wellbeing, we ignore it until we break. But, we do this at our peril, because we break, and then must build up again. Taking a proactive view with our mental health really allows us to achieve our potential. I do what I do today because of my own experiences and overcoming difficulties in my life through a greater understanding of the brain, hypnotherapy and mindfulness. Sharing these approaches to managing our minds is intrinsic to what I do, its key at moving people forwards, releasing trauma, negative habits and emotions. But, once the penny drops, freedom is achieved. Our minds are full of bias and distortions, which is why its so important for people to understand that “just because you thought it, does not mean its right” so be curious. Challenge yourself and push your boundaries, who knows what you will achieve? If you saw the ‘old people’s home for 4-year olds’, this show demonstrated perfectly that you can change every aspect of your life, your cognitive, mental and physical health, as these are all connected and affect each other. You just have to change your life and do something different. Hypnotherapy and mindfulness change your brain and can provide you with an excellent springboard to achieve whatever you set your mind to. In the words of the great Einstein, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Wellbeing in the Workplace Wellbeing is not a brand new concept but will take on critical urgency in 2019 due to a convergence of technological, economic and socio-cultural factors. Here, Joanne Fearon, a Business Hive Shield HR Advisor, explains what wellbeing is and offers advice on how to improve employees’ wellbeing in the workplace. What is Wellbeing? The term “wellbeing” covers several aspects of the way people feel about their lives, including their jobs, and their relationships with the people around them. With the dizzying pace of change and the mind-blowing exponential growth of data and technology available to us showing no signs of letting up, we are all facing new levels of overload. Companies are not only having to look at wellness programmes, they are now encouraged to provide better places of work with the employee in the forefront of any plans and ideas. In addition, the work of inclusion and belonging will take on even greater importance for business success. Impact The UK’s productivity still lags behind that of other countries, but employers are failing to see the link between employee wellbeing and productivity. According to the Government 1 in 4 employees will suffer from some form of mental health, with the Office of National Statistics stating Mental Health related conditions is the third most common reason for employee absence from the workplace. Minor ailments such as coughs and colds being first, with muscular problems coming a close second. How does employees’ wellbeing affect organisations? The answer is poor productivity, an increase in sick days, absenteeism, lack of commitment and staff retention, with employees leaving for more favourable companies. This leads to an overall potential loss in profitability. Improvements There is no ‘one size fits all’, but where employers are able to raise wellbeing in their workforce, they are also likely to see improvements in the performance of their workplace. Below are a number of factors which small to medium sized business can adopt. • Where employees have a degree of autonomy over how they do their job - this does not mean that people should ignore set processes but could mean that staff have a level of discretion about how they undertake their work. Good communication and consultation is an element of this, as is having a ‘voice’ at work. • Being clear about what is expected of staff, including feedback on performance, which could be addressed through a combination of effective induction, clear terms and
P13
conditions and a regular appraisal process • Opportunities for employees to use and develop their skills, which could be through training on and off the job. Fun Ideas • Encourage creativity within communal areas – find an empty office or unused area around your office and turn it into a place where people can meet and collaborate on projects. Install some comfy furniture so people can get away from their desks and let the creativity flow. • Healthy eating – an obvious one. If you have a company restaurant, make sure your service provider is on board. Not having chips on the menu every day is a great start! Benefits It’s common sense, a healthy workforce equals happy employees, which in turn benefits the employer. • Companies having a health and wellbeing programme/ policy will play a hugely beneficial role in promoting employee health, in return minimising avoidable ill health, absenteeism and facilitating faster recovery and return to work after injury or illness. • A reduction in staff turnover which on average costs a company £30,000 to replace an employee. • Employee engagement (commitment, loyalty, retention). The list is endless. How happy are your employees and is it time to change? Make 2019 the year that changes it all!!!! Children As Young As 8 Investigating Crime! Zakon are a team used to delivering legal and investigation skills to public authorities, government investigation teams and the commercial sector. However, three years ago they were challenged to motivate disillusioned schoolchildren who were struggling to see the relevance of traditional classroom learning. Simon from Zakon, stepped up to the challenge and created a highly interactive day that brings real experienced police detectives into the classroom. Children are guided through a set of practically based scenarios demonstrating how science aids an investigation and how classroom based learning facilitates this. This has the benefit of bringing inspirational practitioners into school to compliment traditional teaching, making it more relevant and valid to the children. Teaching staff are picked for their ability to engage with children, break barriers and introduce children to a range of careers within law, investigation and science. Rule of law, tolerance, British values and deep thinking is promoted, whilst the flexible lesson plans can be adapted to meet various school topics (e.g. science, crime and punishment). Simon commented “It’s a privilege and honour to be part of children’s education with a day that they’ll remember for life. I’ve had many letters and emails telling me how some children have been much more keen to learn as a result of our day. If you’d told me three years ago that we would be all over the country delivering this I wouldn’t have believed you.” To find out more about this Police Investigation and Crime Science Training for Schoolchildren contact simon@zakon.co.uk or see the article here https://zakon. co.uk/news/post/2018-09-14-police-investigation-and-crime-science-training-forschoolchildren-win-a-free-day with a link to a short video about the day!

Our Patrons Bluebird Care North East Lincolnshire & West Lindsey partners with the Care Workers Charity Bluebird Care North East Lincolnshire & West Lindsey is delighted to be working with the Care Workers Charity, in a brand new partnership set to benefit Bluebird Care’s hardworking teams of employees in the local area. The Care Workers Charity launched in 2013 as a non-profit organisation dedicated to providing a ‘rainy day fund’ for the UK’s more than 1.5 million care workers. Before them, there was no national charity set up to support care staff. The organisation is proud to award hardship grants of up to £500 to support unexpected and unforeseen circumstances. The Care Workers Charity also offers online information on a range of health and wellbeing topics. The charity is backed by a strong board of trustees with some of the biggest names in the care sector. Bluebird Care NE Lincolnshire and West Lindsey understands that working in care comes with a range of challenges and wants to further reward its dedicated employees who put person-centred services and care at the heart of everything they do. Bluebird Care employees will have direct access to services and new benefits initiated by the partnership; every employee will be able to apply for grants that would help support if unexpected circumstances or life events occur – for example illnesses, changes in living circumstances, relationship breakdowns, or family bereavements. As a country, we rely on care workers to be there for our most vulnerable – and Bluebird Care and the Care Workers Charity want to be there for them. Talented legal trainees highlight progression opportunities at the region’s largest law firm. FIVE young professionals have embarked on training contracts with the region’s largest law firm, which has emerged as one of the UK’s biggest and best sector employers. All from different backgrounds, the five girls will now undertake two years of development within various departments at Wilkin Chapman solicitors The news comes as a national report puts Wilkin Chapman ahead of its peers as the largest employer of all the UK’s 2018 ‘Independents’. The firm currently sits at 106 in The Lawyer’s UK 200, a revenuebased national rankings report. The ‘Independents’ section takes a more detailed look at those that sit between 101 and 200 and with 441 employees, an 11.1 per cent year-on-year increase, Wilkin Chapman leads the way. Of the five latest trainees, three have progressed from previous Paralegal roles. Amy Murphy has been working as a Paralegal for 18-months and is delighted to have now been offered a training contract. Amy studied law at The University of Sheffield, before successfully completing her LPC, (Legal Practice Course) at the University of Law in Leeds. Currently sitting in Probate, she said: “The firm is a market leader in Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire, with opportunity to progress.” Like Amy, Hannah Loft has also seen progression through the firm – from Paralegal to a two-year traineeship, which she is completing alongside her necessary LPC studies. Hannah completed her law degree at the University of Birmingham, before joining Wilkin Chapman, where she now sits within the Dispute Resolution Team. She also appreciates the chance to progress within the region: “There are some really good opportunities, especially with all the sector expertise and specialisms which are available within the firm. I am excited to further progress my legal
career in becoming a solicitor at the region’s biggest law firm.” Louisa Holmes has also progressed from Paralegal to trainee solicitor. A Hull University law degree student, Louisa gained three years’ experience with a London law firm, living in the city, before returning home and beginning her career with Wilkin Chapman. She takes her first seat with the Insolvency team. “I knew this was the firm for me straight away. The doors here have opened for me and I have felt encouraged to ‘go for it’ and progress,” she said. Meanwhile, Chloe Binstead and Harriet Sterry have joined the Wilkin Chapman team for the first time – having started their respective training contracts in September. Both completed their law degrees at the University of Sheffield – although a year apart, with Harriet’s four-year course taking her to Paris to study French law. “What a fantastic opportunity that was, however I am settling in here well and enjoying the work very much,” said Nottingham-born Harriet. Chloe is spending her first six-months working with Wilkin Chapman’s Probate team, one of several departments she will experience during her two years. “I really appreciate the fact that the firm has a high-quality mix of personal and business law, and so will experience both. There really is an ‘open-door’ feel here too, which is great,” said Chloe. Wilkin Chapman is currently accepting applications from those interested in joining the 2020/21 training contract programme and welcomes applications from those looking to pursue a career in Law. Professionals working with children, young people, and families invited to mental health conference Fortis Therapy and Training announces latest conference on World Mental Health Day As World Mental Health Day puts the focus onto “young people and mental health in a changing world”, a team of therapists, speakers, and trainers are giving professionals within the care sector the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge. Today, Fortis Therapy & Training announce ‘Children and Young People’s Mental Health’, a day-long conference for those working with children, young people and families across schools, organisations, charities and local authorities. This is the latest conference from the award-winning business, who have tackled subjects such as mental health in the workplace and whole-school wellbeing approach, previously. Alexis Powell-Howard, Psychotherapist and Managing Director of Fortis Therapy and Training, said: “We’re incredibly passionate about early intervention. When you help children and young people early on, research has shown that the right support can have a positive impact as they become adults, too. We support young people with their mental health every day – our youngest client is just four years old – which is why it is so important to us to make this topic the focus of our next conference.” During the day, delegates will hear from expert speakers covering a variety of current topics, including TEDx speaker, Andrew Whitehouse of People First Education, who will discuss the link between special educational needs (SEN) and mental health, and Ruth Fox, a published author who, due to her experiences, is an advocate for effective mental health support for children and young people. Alexis will also address attendees to speak about trauma and trauma support for young people, something that Fortis’ team of associate therapists help with daily. In addition to this, delegates can attend two of six informative and interactive workshops, which will allow them to explore the day’s topics in more depth, taking home actionable ideas and strategies. The Fortis Conference 2019 takes place at Forest Pines Hotel & Golf Resort, near Brigg, on Wednesday 15th May, from 9am to 3.30pm.
Early bird discounts are available with conference prices varying. Booking is essential. For more information, contact Fortis Therapy & Training on 01472 241794 and visit fortistherapy.co.uk/events.

Avant begins new training programme Avant are extremely pleased to be working with Ormiston Maritime Academy. This month we started delivering a new hair and beauty programme to Ormiston pupils in years 9 and 10. The two groups of pupils, who are the first to benefit from our new training salon and associated classrooms, which opened in August 2018, are undertaking a two-year programme during which time they will develop hair and beauty skills, techniques and knowledge. Although the qualification included in the programme is theory based, practical elements are embedded into the delivery to help learners develop their practical skills. The programme is delivered through a blend of theory classes, practical lessons including demonstrations, role play exercises and group work. The programme
is equivalent to one GCSE and is delivered over two hours, one day per week. Learners are required to effectively apply and integrate appropriate knowledge, understanding and skills from across the breadth of the hair and beauty sector to key tasks that form the assessments of units. This will increase the level of challenge for learners and ensure cohesiveness across the qualification. They will complete a combination of theory and practical skills in the training salon to build an e-portfolio, enabling the school to follow the learners progress easily. Their behaviour will also count towards their assessment, in terms of maturity, development, interaction and communication.
this programme to appeal to these young people, aiming to prepare them for work and apprenticeships after school. Ormiston Maritime Academy in Grimsby have been enormously supportive of the programme and their pupils and we hope this is the start a long-term professional relationship.” Watch out for updates through social media as the programme and pupils progress. Anyone interested in this type of programme should contact Paul Robinson, Head of Delivery - paul@ avant.ac.uk, or 01472 485692

Get Work Experienced with CPO At CPO Grimsby we are running a new project called Get Work Experienced. Like so many of our schemes it is all about getting adults with little or no work experience into employment. The scheme offers participants a taste of what working in real life industry is like in order to improve their chances of competing in the labour market, which is where you come in. If you’re an employer looking for some extra hands, we can help. We select a participant interested in your industry for a four week work experience placement; they will be with you on your premises 4 days a week. In return for offering this opportunity, you gain additional support for your business and the knowledge that you’ve helped to build up the confidence of someone who is struggling to get a job. In addition to this, offering work experience really raises the profile of your organisation as a whole, and you can see how the participants perform first-hand without having to rely solely on a CV or interview. Who knows, they might even do
so well that you choose to take them on longterm. We will visit to conduct a brief health and safety assessment and explain the scheme in more detail, and will never leave you out of the loop. You will be provided with a named contact at CPO so if you need anything from us. Other than making the very most of the experience for you and the trainees all we ask is at the end of a placement you write a short reference evaluating their performance. We appreciate the value of your time and want to make things go as smoothly as possible, so if you think you might be interested in being a part of this programme and gaining a helping hand in your workplace, contact Mo Favill for more information. YMCA Humber launches Sleep Easy night to help local homeless young people YMCA Humber is calling on local people to come together and take part in our 10th Anniversary Sleep Easy Fundraiser and sleep rough for one night to support local, homeless young people. This year’s event will take place on Friday 1st February 2018 between 6pm and 6am and will see supporters sleep out for one night to raise awareness of the hundreds of young people who sleep rough every year, as well as raise funds to help YMCA Humber and other local Charities to support residents and young people in their services. Participants will spend the night out with shelter building and fun activities throughout the evening. Registration for the event is free. YMCA Humber has hosted Sleep Easy nights since 2010 and raised over £150,000 in that time to support local Charities providing services to some of the most vulnerable people in the area. This year YMCA Humber are looking to raise funds to support the development of ‘Trinity Village’ at our Peaks Lane site, a project that will reinvigorate the current site and bring it into the 21st Century. Trinity Village will provide quality accommodation and support services and training and education facilities on-site, in addition to sport, recreation and outdoor facilities for Village Residents and the community. Helen Pine, YMCA Humber Acting Chief Executive, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting our 2019 Sleep Easy event at Freshney Place on 1st February and we would like to thank them for supporting our event for the sixth year running. “We know from our experience over the past 40 years that without the support we offer, many more young people would be sleeping on the streets and have less options and less chance of realising their potential.” “We are calling on the local community, old and young, to sign up to our Sleep Easy to help us support our services today and into the future. One night out can make a lifetime of difference.”
P23
Jeremy Hodson, Financial Director at Ultimate Packaging and Business Hive member said: “I thoroughly enjoyed Sleep Easy 2018 and will certainly be looking to do it again in 2019. “It was enjoyable to meet some great new people and at the same time raise much needed funds for the charities. “It’s definitely not an attempt to replicate rough sleeping but being out in the cold on a Friday night in the town centre, listening to the late-night noise, even in the safe environment we were in, does give you a little insight into how uncomfortable and potentially frightening sleeping on the streets would be. “As a major local employer, it’s very important to us to offer support where we can to local people and put something back into our local community; I will certainly be encouraging my colleagues at Ultimate Packaging to take part in Sleep Easy 2019 and I would encourage others to do the same”.
Local people interested in taking part in YMCA Humber’s Sleep Easy can find out more by visiting our www.sleep-easy.co.uk or contacting Leanne Kennedy on 07736 156 124 sleepeasy@ymca-humber.com YMCA Humber is one of 133 local YMCAs in England and Wales that, together, support more than 200,000 young people every year.

A £500,000 investment is taking Hive member, CARS of Grimsby on the road to success!
Accident repair specialists and vehicle bodyshop, CARS of Grimsby, has purchased, refurbished, and relocated to new premises in one of the borough’s busiest industrial hubs. The move has enabled the business to expand its repair services for large commercial vehicles, employ new staff, and set plans for a more eco-friendly workplace in motion. Jason Barker, Managing Director, established CARS of Grimsby in 2012. He said: “We were getting asked more and more about repair work for trucks. So, in addition to our original Birchin Way premises, we took on a small, second unit in 2016. We made the decision to alter the business to do truck repairs alongside our services for cars, and it’s all grown organically from there.” The tenancies for the original Birchin Way unit and the second space on South Humber Industrial Estate came to an end when Jason found an ideal, larger property, also on the estate, up for sale. The newly-purchased 5,000 sq ft unit has allowed CARS of Grimsby to unite its services and workforce and expand its facilities, increasing from one spray booth to three with a dedicated spray booth for trucks, and investing in all-new state-of-the-art, energy-efficient equipment.
equipment, spray booths, everything really, so that we use less energy. It has been a big investment, but the savings are massive. Now everything’s under one roof, we have more security and ultimately, it’s costing less money.” To assist with the refurbishment of the space, Jason was able to access a grant with the help of The Business Hive’s sister company E-Factor’s Business Advisor Steve Parker. Steve is a Business Growth Hub Advisor for Lincolnshire LEP and assisted in completing the application, forming business plans and forecasts, and submitting supporting evidence, helping to secure £30,000 from the Growing the Humber fund. The Business Hive Team worked alongside this to help pull the launch event together, assisting in designing the invite and getting it out to businesses all across the area. Jason said: “The support has been phenomenal. I don’t think I would have had time to research or do the paperwork because we’re always busy working. It seemed out of reach, but they’ve made it possible.” Since relocating, CARS has expanded its workforce and employed two new members of staff. Business Hive Manager Sam Burgess said “It’s great to see this expansion and know that The Business Hive and E-Factor team contributed to making it all possible. The wrap around support we are able to offer as a company is completely unique and comes with a real sense of pride when a business does this well. We are looking forward to continuing to work with Jason and the team in the future.”
The introduction of this new machinery is a part of the business’ eco-plan. LED lighting and Solar PV panels has been installed, and environmentallyfriendly paint is used on all vehicles. A brand new colour-matching camera system means less paint is used, too. Already, CARS has seen their bills be dramatically reduced, helping to save thousands of pounds. The next phase of the eco-plan is to introduce electric vehicles into its loan car fleet and install a charging point, which the public will be able to use on weekends. Jason added: “We’ve replaced all our sanders, welding
