Circle K International Convention

The Circle K International Convention/ Large Scale Service Project took place in New Orleans during the week of June 24 to June 30. Being a rookie to both events, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The week started off with the Large Scale Service Project. The 175 participants were divided into 19 groups and did various service project in the New Orleans community. Some of the projects ranged from rebuilding homes that were damaged in Hurricane Katrina, painting murals for museums, working with kids at the Boys and Girls Club, laying out mulch and planting flowers, and many more! The second day of LSSP was spent with Habitat for Humanity and their various sites in New Orleans. My group got the chance to work on two houses that were right next to each other. It was an amazing experience and

some of us even got to meet the family that was going to live in one of the houses!! On Wednesday, there were in-service project at the hotel--we made ELIMINATE pins and corsages to be sold at the Kiwanis International Convention that was being held in New Orleans as well! On Wednesday, International Convention officially started with an exciting opening session and a flag procession of the all of the countries that Circle K International clubs are represented in. It was cool to see the differences in districts and subregions ( made of up of districts that close in proximity) but also the way were all connected by this wonderful service organization. This week, I participated in my first flash mob at the Kiwanis International Open-

ing session, which also had guest speakers Sean and Leigh Anne Touhy, the real couple that adopted Michael Oher in “The Blind Side”. As a delegate, I voted on amendments and for the 20122013 International Board. There were informative workshops that I know will be helpful to Presidential Division this year. At the joint Kiwanis and Circle K leadership luncheon, we got the chance to hear Glee’s Lauren Potter speak on her success as an actress and liaison to Barrack Obama! There was even an talent show and awards night. Virginia Tech, VCU, NOVA- Alexandria were big capital winners this year. It wasn’t all business, though. The Capital District group got to explore the historically rich city, eat mouth-watering food, and mingle with some of the locals. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to attend both LSSP and ICON this year. I met so many people from around the country and the world who care just as much as I do about Service, Leadership, and Fellowship. Next year’s ICON/ LSSP will be in Vancouver and I hope that I’ve convinced you guys to consider participating next year. I hope that I can! :) Yours in Service, Tameka Glover
