Starring: Elizabeth McGovern, Haley Lu Richardson, Campbell Scott, Blythe Danner
his month we take a look at movies featuring sexually adventurous women in 19th and early 20th century American herstory. Neither star Rosie O’Donnell. Fortunately.
Wild Nights with Emily Starring: Molly Shannon, Sasha Frolova Who knew that the legendary (and reclusive, kooky) Belle of Amherst, American poet Emily Dickinson, wasn’t the shrinking violet we thought she was? Though it is a comedy, a surprisingly touching love story anchors Emily (SNL alumnus Molly Shannon) and her childhood friend, Susan Gilbert (Frolova). Their teenage romance developing during 19th century sleepovers would make 21st century parents blush. Soon, Emily is heartbroken to learn about her brother’s secret engagement to Susan, but softens when Susan explains her plan for them to be together. Sure enough, the newlyweds build their house right next door and a lifetime of scurrying across the lawn ensues. See what we missed out on in our American Lit class? Find out more at WildNightsWithEmily.com Opens April 11
Louise Brooks is an iconic representation of silent movies, the Jazz Age, and the reckless, rebellious spirit of America’s young women. No taboo was too forbidden for The Girl with the Black Helmet whose bobbed hair started a revolution. The 1929 melodrama Pandora’s Box shocked audiences with its overt lesbian overtones. In real life, Brooks also enjoyed affairs with many women, including Greta Garbo. This fictionalized movie tells how Brooks got her start, but moreover, the story of Norma Carlisle (McGovern, Downton Abbey, Ordinary People), the buttoned-down Wichita matron who accompanied the juvenile Brooks (Richardson, Five Feet Apart) to New York to audition for a career in modern dance. Once there, secrets are revealed and the stiff-upper-lipped Mrs. Carlisle shows her mettle and breaks a few rules herself. Co-written by Julian Fellowes of Downton Abbey and Gosford Park fame. First time Hollywood production by PBS, where it will be broadcast after it’s theatrical premiere. Opens March 29 April 2019 WWW.IONAZ.COM 59

Solange
When I Get Home
To say Beyoncé and her sister Solange are far removed from their humble beginnings in Houston may be true—but only geographically. Where Bey gave homage to her hometown in the form of shout-outs, Solange crafted a love letter to the city with her highly anticipated follow up to 2016’s A Seat at the Table. When I Get Home is a sort of sonic fever dream where the songs are interlude length, bleeding in and out of each other, reinforcing that the idea of home is less rooted. The uneasy and brooding “Down with the Clique” opens up into “Way to the Show’,” a sexy, bass bouncing song that reads like cryptic sexting. The Pharrell produced “Sound of Rain” reinterprets the turn of the millennium sound that made her sister’s girl group famous. “Almeda” stands out in its “chopped ‘n’ screwed” production and meditative lyrics about the strength of Black faith. Available Now
Ben Platt
Sing to Me Instead For Grammy, Emmy and Tony winner Ben Platt, a solo debut is overdue. Sing to Me Instead marks Platt’s first recorded output since his Hamilton/Dear Evan Hansen mashup
duet with Lin-Manuel Miranda. Platt doesn’t steer too far from the calling cards that made him famous. Pull-at-theheartstrings ballads with his sweeping vocals are here by the dozen. “Bad Habit,” “Ease My Mind” and “Temporary Love” work as a sort of trilogy, each accompanied by a video announcing his “out and proud” status where Platt shows us why he needs that Oscar for full EGOT status. Platt isn’t reinventing any wheels, and we can expect to hear these songs at weddings, but at the very least he’s letting us know he doesn’t need to have to play a character to succeed. Kelly Cohen Most Valuable Volunteer Kelly is the Exhibitor Manager who facilitates exhibitor check-in, checkout and any exhibitor needs during the Phoenix Pride festival. This is her fifth year volunteering. “The Phoenix Pride staff & Managers are like family. Though I put in easily 50 hours in three days, it’s alongside this amazing group of people who have the same commitment to Phoenix Pride and delivering an awesome Festival,” she enthused. “Growing up in the 70s & 80s we didn’t have Pride festivals like we do today,” Kelly pointed out. “Any establishment that was considered ‘gay’ had black windows and a side or rear entrance. I’d like to think that my volunteer time for the festival helps give someone else an opportunity to experience a sense of community openly and not in a darkened building with a rear entrance.” Truth.

Pastor Freddie Maese and Bishop Jabowa Whitehead Community Outreach In 2005 New Foundation was born where people could meet without judgment. From the Buddhist to a Catholic, even to the atheist, they provide space and acceptance. In 2016 Jabowa was acknowledged as a Bishop and Feddie was installed as a pastor. “Through his years of ministry in dance, praise team, and leadership as a deacon, then elder, we grew closer in ministry. Eventually, Life had its divine way and we became spouses,” said Jabowa. “Our biggest goal is to make an impact through teaching the gospel of what the Divine, God, Universe has in store for each of us. We call this being a ‘world changer.’ We feed the homeless, provide HIV and trans awareness, and acceptance, and help those who’ve been abandoned by their faith.” New Foundation meets and worship every Sunday at 11 a.m. at The Rock. (Even the Creator occasionally enjoys a good Bloody Mary.)

RipplePHX with Jeremy Bright, Jason Jones & Andy Castano Fantastic Fundraisers RipplePHX is a back-to-grass-roots project created for our LGBTQ Community addressing today’s HIV virus through impact-focused splashes of awareness, love, and celebrations of individual sexual expression. And what a splash they’re making! “HIV can affect anyone, so it’s amazing when we’re able to partner with other organizations. We can easily multi-task fundraising for our friends and their communities while we still make ‘ripples’ around HIV at the same time. We can do more together and I love that!” said Jeremy, co-founder and head ripple-maker.
“We all have a need to belong, we all deserve dignity. It’s only human.” - Andy Castano “We’ve received so much love and feel partnering with other organizations, this is the least we can do. #community!” said Jason. Find out more at RipplePHX.org

Vanity St. James and GrAy Matter Mister and Miss Phoenix Pride 2019 Miss Pride: Vanity St. James has been competing and winning in pageants across America while pursuing several degrees. “I chose to compete for Miss Phoenix Pride to get to know my state and my community while expanding the reaches of Phoenix Pride, setting a higher goal for more scholarships, while bringing a loving and safe environment for all.” Vanity and her husband operate a one-stop drag shop where she sews and beads while her husband makes hair. They are very involved in the trade and sale of goat semen. (You read that right.) Mister Pride: “I competed for Mister Phoenix Pride because I realized that I was visible as a transgender/queer man, but I wasn’t active in my community. Could I raise money for the scholarship fund? Could I be there for our community? Could I fight through the negative self talk to see that I was deserving and worthy of this title? I can and did—anyone can! I hope for individuals to understand that resources are available. They deserve growth and change. I hope to make some of that happen this year.”

Sbudz Budzyn and Sam Heart, Mr. and Ms Phoenix Leather Budzyn and Heart are an integral part of the Leather and LGBTQ communities, always willing to help and foster greater understanding. Heart is the first titleholder for Ms. Phoenix Leather. “I want to build bridges and welcome more people into the leather community, build connections, and fundraise for Leather and LGBTQ causes alike. There are thousands of us! Our community supports one another and provides an environment to explore and express yourself. I encourage you to find yourself and celebrate!” Budzyn shared, “I want to better the leather community by showing compassion and understanding, and help by spreading positivity. This ‘pay-it-forward’ attitude can spread exponentially. The leather community is inclusive and loves everyone. No matter how tough life can get, I want to show others that they are accepted for the kinks they possess.”

Valley of the Dahlias Everything’s comin’ up roses for Stem Swag AZ Are you gaga for gazanias? Daffy for daffodils? Cuckoo for chrysanthmums? Stem Swag AZ puts extra pop in their periwinkles and knows how to make your dianthus the dreamiest. They’ve got your floral needs covered for everything from agapanthus to zinnias. Gary Gorsky-Guerin and Selina Maguire debuted their business venture one year ago after a brainstorming session about creating a business new together. “We met for months about when you’re trying to find your passion and bring it together to the next level of creativity,” said Gary. Creating a new twist for tulips in the floral biz was where they landed. “Part of the sheer excitement of Stem Swag is creating our own florals.” Selena said, “We’re not elitist; we wanted people to be excited, not to be intimidated. We love to educate people and we take the ‘stuffy’ element out of it.” Floral designs that are trend-setting, affordable, and a little outrageous is what they do. Stem Swag AZ puts a fresh spin on flowers and ready to break a few rules while creating custom centerpieces and decor. Looking for a new way to bouquet? Share your concept and vision and let their creative gurus deliver a fully realized fabulous floral experience. They have mad skills in environmental design and decor, too. What are you waiting for? Don’t be a pansy! Get off your aster and make someone’s day special ... or even your own. Stem Swag AZ created all the florals you see for ION Arizona’s Prismatic Pride feature this year.

Millennial Trippin’ Now, Apocalypse Starring: Avan Jobia, Kelli Berglund, Beau Mirchoff, Tyler Posey “I’ve always had an attraction for the unknown. I’m Ulysses. Everyone in my life right now is insane.” Well, sure, kiddo. That’s what every Instagram Story obsessed, weed smoking, gluten free, dolphin safe, kinda vegan, kinda not, future famous, sexually fluid Millennial thinks about their life. Every. Single. One. Starz network premiered this quirky, obnoxious, weird, lovable series about life in La La Land at the Sundance Festival. Part Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, with a dash of Donnie Darko, MTV’s The Hills, a dollop of The Spice
Channel and a pinch of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel-turned-movie Rules of Attraction makes for a soapy, super sexy, weirdly engaging, colorful comedy. Aliens may or may not be involved. The lovable, dopey, hyper-sexual star of the show, Ulysses, (Jogia, SyFy network’s Caprica and Ghost Wars, and ABC’s Twisted) and his friends only seem to hike Runyon Canyon during the day, sleep, and then spend all night jerking off, webcamming, texting, hooking up (a lot) and smoking weed (a whole lot) while trying to figure stuff out. We’re not exactly sure what kinda stuff, but, y’know, “stuff.” Whatever’s clever, dude. Co-written and directed by Greg Araki (Mysterious Skin), known for his involvement with the New Queer Cinema movement, Araki executively co-produced the series with veteran producer Steven Soderbergh (Magic Mike, Erin Brokavich). Vogue sex columnist and Slutever.com creator-host Karley Sciortino is co-writer. The cast is hip, hot, quick, sexy and fun. Interestingly, star Avan Jogia is a cofounder of the PSA organization StraightButNotNarrow.org, working to positively impact how teens see and treat their LGBTQ peers. “Life is about taking risks when it counts,” is Ulysses’ mantra. Right before he blazes up a fattie and eats a chipwich. All 10 episodes available now, On Demand on Starz, Cox Communications channels 260 & 1260

State Forty Eight Brewery Craft Beer & Provisions
A
rizona has amazing history. The 1881 gunfight at the OK Corral lasted only 30 seconds. The Grand Canyon has been around longer than when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Pluto was discovered from the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. The nation’s first barrel of tequila came from Arizona. Speaking of booze, Arizona also has over 100 craft beer breweries. That’s a lotta suds, bud! State 48 Brewery Craft Beer & Provisions is locally owned and family run by the Rana clan with four locations in the Valley, plus a great menu of noteworthy noshes. The beer is made onsite by their Head Brewer Chuck Croix who rides herd over the 20 barrel brewhouse with 40 barrel fermenters and brite tanks.
Ales, pilsners, hefeweizen, IPAs, ambers, ports, stouts ... they’ve got ‘em all. As a matter of fact, they’ve got 30 Arizona beers and ciders on tap, with 21 varieties available in cans. Can’t make up your mind? Sampling is a great way to see which ones are your favorites. Check ‘em out with five oneounce flights. We didn’t make a dent in all the beers they offer, but we sure slaked our thirst with the fruity Blueberry Ale, the rich Blood Orange Belgian Blonde and the zippy Ace Cider. You’re sure one that suits you. A couple of years ago State 48 moved into the repurposed historic 1927 Welnick Markeplace across the street from The Van Buren and near the Comerica Theatre. A major reconstruction exposed trusses, plus roll-up garage doors. The interior is bright and colorful with graffitistyle walls. They also added a dogfriendly patio and 100 parking spaces. We popped in for lunch. (Well, and a brewski.) Everything is made in house, from scratch. Starter Salads are smaller portioned, but still plenty to eat. Try the cool Roasted Beet Salad with braised red and gold beets, orange supremes, goat cheese, pistachios, arugula, splashed with basil vinaigrette and a balsamic reduction. $8. They’ve also got April 2019 WWW.IONAZ.COM 77
four more salads. You can add grilled chicken, poached shrimp, NY strip steak, grilled salmon, tofu for an upcharge. Four bountiful Entrée Salads are available for bigger appetites. Grab a Sandwich. We dug into the Carnitas Torta with beer-braised pork carnitas, avocado crema, cotija cheese, pickled red onion, pickled jalapeño, tomato, lettuce, on torta bread, $13. Five other sandwiches, like the Beer Cheesesteak and Hot Chicken will lure us back. Looking for something big ‘n’ beefy? How about the namesake State 48 Burger with aged Cheddar cheese, beer-battered pickles, IPA glazed bacon, lettuce, tomato, red onion on a moist, rich brioche bun, $14. Six other burgers, including Build Your Own Burger with all the fixin’s and a Beer Cheese Burger highlight the menu. All sandwiches and burgers come with your choice of beer
battered fries, or kettle chips. The lackluster cole slaw failed to impress us. Sweet potato fries, side salad, or tots are also available for a small upcharge. Gluten free wraps are an option, too. A variety of Signature Entrées include Meatloaf, fish & chips, pork chop, salmon and more if your stomach’s rumbling. A real favorite with our table is the hearty Tomato Bisque, with a swell purée of love apples, complete with seeds for added texture. It comes with a mini-grilled cheese (Velveeta) on sweet Hawaiian bread, $8. Splurge, get the full-size for $13. Downtown? Try their Daily Lunch Specials served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Turkey Wrap, BLT, Crunchy Tuna Salad, Meatloaf Melt, Tuna Melt, soup and salad or sandwich for $9 to $12. Fun fact: Arizona also is the home to over 100 wineries with 22 varietals. But that’s whole different review. Go for the beer at State 48 Brewery in the meantime.

Miss Tiger,

PRING TRAINING
Keepin’ it real with you. I’m all muscles and not much dick. Guys always want me to top but I’d rather bottom. Any advice?
While the Cubs are pitching and catching on the field, you’ve been doin’ some pitching and catching of your own. While they’re out on the diamond, get a diamond of your own ...on your finger!

Hey Miss Tiger,
I got crabs from the towels at the boxing gym. My man doesn’t believe me. What’s up with that?
My boyfriend is giving blow jobs to every dude at the gym. What the hell should I do? — Leo Dear This Is Why Folks Should Peep Into The Medicine Cabinet On The First Date And Had You Done So That Acyclovir Prescription Would’ve Had You Runnin’ Like A Church Lady Filled With The Holy Ghost,
Dear I Love A Muscle Bunny … But A Bitch Needs A Carrot Too, NEXT! Hola Miss Tiger,
— Alex Dear That Sphincter Itch Be The Worst, Bitch, please! Getting crabs from the laundry is like getting pregnant from giving head. Your bullshit (and yo’ raggedy ass towels) ain’t foolin’ me, mor your man. Hi Tiger,
But since you didn’t … you might wanna sashay on down to the free clinic.
A guy at my health club farts while doing squats. It smells terrible and I want someone to do something about it!
Hopefully athlete’s foot is the ONLY thing you picked up from his fuckery down at the fitness facility.
— Howard
Dear Miss Tiger,
P.S.
I’m falling for my workout buddy. Do you think it’s a good idea to tell him? — Jason Dear If He Was Into You He Would’ve Already Hit That Shit, I wish queens would take they asses to a grocery store for eggplant instead of trying to plant a vegetable garden out back.
Dear If You Ain’t Steppin’ in Human Shit Ain’t Nobody Doin’ Jack About A Fart, Gurl, you have me gagging … but not as much as you’re gagging on ol’ dude’s Taint de Toilette! Shhh! It’s a family secret! I’d like to reveal a few secrets of my own to Ryan.

Marcus (C) made dolphin safe, hypoallergenic chili with free range garbanzo beans, no pesticides or parabens, is kind to animals and Obama approved because it was 100% vegan. Is that allowed? As long as Marcus is there, I’m happy. And bring your B pineapples, honey.
I
love chili! Still, I wouldn’t dream of discussing it with anyone from Texas. (And if you know any Texans, you know exactly what I mean!) Even Charlie’s was barely neutral ground when it came to the Chili Cook-Off. Some chili was con carne. Some had frijoles. My favorite kind was the Chili de los Muchachos Caliente! And I was knee-deep in that! I could put that yummy Bobby Garcia Veyna (A) in a “cockpot” with a bunch of beans and peppers and have a hot ‘n’ spicy bowl ready in no time. (He can bring the chorizo, if you know what I mean.)

YouTube “Sports Report” personality Ryan Santana (and one of the hottest men on Instagram @RyanJordanSantana. You’re welcome.) (B) brought his Tía’s recipe. 96

Through the miracle of modern science, chili experts and celebrity judges Geno OberlanderJohnson and Jeremy JohnsonOberlander (D) had their heads transplanted onto a single body! But wait’ll all that chili kicks in, kids! Ka-POW!

wild on the turntables and our own Coco Iman went wild on Cade Maddox. (K) Falcon top man Steven Lee—a former TV meteorologist (see inset)—cozied up to BS West gogo boy Zachary to tell him about cumulonimbus and atmospheric relative humidity. Sure. (L)
G A portable urinal makes a great beer mug for Duke Kimball ... wait, that is beer, isn’t it? (E) But why did your beer smell like asparagus?

Vera Saucy, (F) everyone’s I favorite Queerdo Non Pareil, premiered their couture and accoutrements in a runway show at Alwun House on the famed Rue de la Roosevelt to great K acclaim. Fashionistas like Gerbil and Alexa (G) watch model Yoyo Blackfire gossip with Anna Wintour. Or maybe his name is Eric. (H) I’m not sure. Fashion photographer Khiona Marx was there to capture the glamour of the night. (I) Nobody was waiting for wood at the BS West “Fluffer” party where DJ Jonny Noir (J) went
Woody Fox showed Michael Warner how to tell when a banana’s ripe. (M) ALERT! On Twitter @ TheOnlyWoodyFox: That same banana drag appeared in the wee hours of the morning on a local swain who was “spit-roasted” by Woody and Steven in their hotel room J but wanted to remain incognito. (N) Who was it?

New Moon on April 5 means new priorities. On the eve of Phoenix Pride it gives us pause to examine what we can do to make our community better. With Mercury Retrograde behind us, that messiness unravels as it moves away from Neptune and this will demonstrate what the truth is for you. ¶ Mid-month your self-confidence is renewed but group dynamics erupt because of Pluto Retrograde from April 24-October 3. The Pink Moon on April 19 isn’t really pink and it’s awfully tiny—sorry girls—but it brings focus to a call to action that will affect your current circumstances. ¶ The Moon and Venus square with Jupiter from the 15-18 and you’re thinking of something risky. Don’t. Just don’t. There. Feel better? You will. ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20 A transformation is in store for you. A new plan unfolds for you. Birthday Rams can expect an upswing in cosmic energy, plus romantic intrigue. That means, “You’re horny.” TAURUS April. 21 - May 20 There’s a big “Yes!” to everything for you this month! Trust your friends with your feelings. Birthday Bulls: the world is ready to hear what you say. And say it with a mighty, “Yawp!” GEMINI May 21 - June 21 What’s important to you? Define your values and talents. Sure, we know what some of your more exotic “talents” are, but I’m serious! You discover a secret about yourself. CANCER June 22 - July 22 Mid-month you may notice a change in family dynamics, but it’s not bad. By the end of the month you’ll need to make way for new priorities. You’ll love ‘em! 98

LEO July 23 - Aug. 22 Focus on rational thinking. You can do it! It’s a good time to ask for a favor. Negotiate. Bargain. Someone thinks you have a good idea. (What is it? You can tell us.) VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22 Are you feeling whimsical? Because the New Moon adds special whimsy. Pay attention to your intuition. You’re really good at that. Those knee-jerk reactions are spot on. LIBRA Sep. 23 - Oct. 22 You’re always the peacemaker. You’re called on to make judgements all month long. You’re kinda like Judge Judy, but not as obnoxious. Still, your audience loves you. SCORPIO Oct. 23 - Nov.23 Facing a situation and not sure what to do? Don’t do anything. It’ll unravel itself on its own. Don’t worry. You’re irresistible. Everyone says so. You know that, too. SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 - Dec. 23 “Fun” is a big part of you this month. You’ve got all kinds of happy vibes. It’s a good idea to pre-arrange a get together in advance with your posse so nobody misses out on your magic. CAPRICORN Dec. 23 - Jan. 20 Tie up loose ends and finish a project, but you still have stuff to sort out. What kind of “stuff”? Do I really need to tell you? Deep down, you know what kind. It all works out. AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 For you, Love is always like you’re jumping out of someone’s bed yelling, “Surprise!” because Mars makes you all frisky. It really freaks some people out, but keep the lunar love rolling, baby. PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20 This month is all about money issues. You’ll benefit from a push that puts a spin on earning potential. Stand up and scream, “Show me the money!” Right now. I dare you.
