INTERVIEW Jacquari Harris

6

JMG May/June 2017

elix Da Housecat has been producing music for more than 20 years. He’s known for his electro house sound and for working with artists like Diddy. I recently spoke with Felix before his show at 1OAK in New York, where we discussed his latest music releases and planned show at Clé on May 7. JMG: How long of a break did you take after touring for 20 years? Felix Da Housecat: It’s funny because since 2001, the longest I’ve had a break is about two to three weeks. So when I went to Asia, my body was just shot. It just shut down. So I needed some time off. I think I was off for like a month, but I think I took a show in Phoenix, but I still wasn’t 100%. So I’ve been chilling out for about two months. I’ve just been eating healthy, not partying and none of the things that come with the nightlife. I just walked away from it to reset, you know. And sometimes you have to do that because if you’ve been touring for that long without a major break, then that can definitely wear you down. Yeah, of course. Especially since I’m 45 (laughing). Now I know you’ve played instruments like the clarinet ever since you were younger. Do you try to incorporate instruments when you’re producing new music or for a live performance? I started playing the clarinet when I was 13 to 15 years old. I stopped when Prince came out with “Purple Rain” in ’84. I was in my high school band and we were playing all of these Prince numbers, and I was like “I can’t play the clarinet, I want to get more into production.” So I just stopped the clarinet and then I started to get more into production with songs and music. I’m self-taught on the keyboard, so I do incorporate live bass instruments on some of my productions. So I do incorporate that and merge it with synths and electronic music. I ran across your “Tour Your Body” mix on SoundCloud and it has a nice little deep house sound to it. Do you have any other new mixes or releases coming out soon? I have a new label that I launched with my partner out in Montreal

called Founders Of Filth. The first release is a track I did with Jamie Principle, who did “Touch Your Body.” The new song is called “It’s Your World” ‘cause Jamie’s like one of my heroes, her and Prince. When Jamie worked on “Touch Your Body” with me, it was a big thing because that was like 15 years of us waiting to hook-up. So we ended up doing like 12 songs. The first release may be coming this May, I’m not sure. So let’s see what happens. You collaborated with Diddy back in 2006. Have you seen him in person or worked with him since? As a matter of fact, he just invited me to this thing he’s doing with the Tribeca Film Festival. But I have a sound check at the same time, so it’s going to be a tough one. But we’re close. We talk like once every two weeks. We’ve been working on an album for about 10 years since 2004. We’re sitting on 20-25 songs. I made about four to five new tracks this year that we’re collaborating on. He’s such a perfectionist. He just wants to redo his vocals. I always tell him that his vocals sound fine. But I mean its Puff Daddy, you have to respect his wishes (laughing). So yeah we still talk. He’s like a big brother. Well that’s cool that after all these years you’re still communicating and working together. But it’s definitely time to put a release date on that music. Definitely. Now you have a show at Cle on May 7. What can your fans expect from your set? I’m always vibin’ off the people. I have an idea of what I’m going to do. But if I haven’t been there so long, I try to go through a whole timeline of my roots up to now. I try to squeeze that into a two-hour set, or sometime I just vibe off the people. I never know what’s going to happen. I’m sure the people are going to give me some beautiful energy. I’m excited because I haven’t been there in so long. When you’re doing multiple shows back-to-back, do you play the same sets each night or do you mix it up? It’s weird because I play on Traktor. If I play a good set in one city, then in the next city I might try to play it. But it’s a different city and a different vibe. They may not be into what the other city is into. It’s always different every time I play. I may go in thinking I’ll try this, but if I see it’s not working, I’ll move on to something else. I’m kind of unselfish and more for the people. But at the same time, I have to educate and stand my ground. It just depends on the vibe and the vibe of the crowd. But that’s a great question.

I’m kind of unselfish and more for the people. But at the same time, I have to educate and stand my ground.

IT JUST DEPENDS ON THE VIBE AND THE VIBE OF THE CROWD.

RISE REAL ESTATE

Developments A Look at Houston’s Hottest ZIP Codes

You’ve heard me say this before but East Downtown is absolutely on fire right now. People are starting to catch on with what new developments are under way and what is about to happen in the area. Property values are certainly going to be reinforced if not raised so now is a great time to get in the area for a home for yourself or a rental property – the townhouses in the area have fantastic rental potential. One property that I just put on the market is a great example of what I’m talking about. 3542 Cline is on the north side of the Bayou in a gated community built by In-Town Homes in 2005. It holds 3 bedrooms along with 3 full baths with a great open kitchen that lends itself effortlessly to entertaining. The high ceilings along with the bright natural light make the hardwood floors glisten like diamonds – it’s really fantastic to see them shine! The neat thing about this house is that the entire third floor is the master retreat – a huge bedroom with high ceilings, an oversized bathroom, and wonderful walk-in closet. This house is an

Penthouse Perfect: Living in Style at the Four Seasons The Four Seasons in downtown just went through a major facelift and the results are amazing. I also just listed a unit on the very top floor, the penthouse level, of the private residences. The owners gutted this unit down to the studs and concrete for a complete custom renovation. This renovation is so stunning that it ended up winning the prestigious Ruby Award. The kitchen holds a Wolf cooktop, SubZero refrigerators (one being a 130+ bottle wine fridge), and Miele ovens, coffee bar, and microwave – a true chef’s kitchen high in the sky. A cool thing about being on the top floor is that you’re able to raise your ceilings, which this owner did throughout. The ceilings are popped up in both of the bedrooms, the dining space, the living room, and the foyer. There

is cove lighting displayed in all of the raised areas as well so you get an elevated sense of height. The master bathroom is covered in marble from the floors to the shower to the countertops. It’s pure, clean and luxurious. The unit as a whole is 2 beds, 2.5 baths, right at 2,200 square feet and is priced at $1,995,000. Unit 3006 will blow your mind! Theory T

heory, a modern and contemporary clothing retailer, will open soon in the River Oaks District location. The clothing store will offer women’s wear, menswear and quality handbag accessories. In addition to Houston, Theory also has locations nationwide as well as in Europe and Asia. Theory is well known for its modern style with a tailored fit to most of the clothing that it offers. The elongated blazers are very popular and a best seller in the women’s collection as well as the slim crop pants that pair very well with the blazer. Theory also offers a stylish selection of offthe-shoulder Bardot style tops and stretch linen cropped pants. If you’re a business woman or just a young professional who wants to fine tune your work style, I would definitely recommend shopping at Theory in River Oaks District. While the menswear section in Theory offers a great selection for tailored business wear as well, it is more known for the high-quality cotton tees. Theory’s cotton tees for men are offered in a wide variety of shades and come with a pocket to add slight detail for a contemporary look. You can easily pair any one of these cottons tees with Theory’s selection of shorts and trousers. A couple of great options to try would be either the cotton terry shorts or the modern cotton chinos. Although the menswear selection isn’t as vast as the womenswear, there are still plenty of high quality options for the mature male dresser. Also, if you’re seeking to add a new bag to your collection, Theory is now featuring the new “Bowery Bag.” It’s a leather bag with pebble detailing and offers you the option to carry it by hand or comfortably on the shoulder. Have Some Whimsical Fun with Your Summer Festival Outfits Festival fashion doesn’t have to be hard for anyone. The whole point of festival outfits is to have fun while looking great! You don’t have to dress like a celebrity or your most fashionable friend, and you don’t have to wear culturally appropriate outfits to look amazing. For starters, you must identify what your true personal style is. Are you an extrovert who loves all the attention? Or maybe you might be an introvert who still has a keen eye for attention to detail and style? The latter is my personal favorite. If you’re the extrovert the best thing that would work for your style to stand out is all in the accessories and hair. I would recommend going for

something extreme like the Kylie Jenner highlighted hair color. In addition, adding hair and body jewelry would be a plus for your over-the-top style. ASOS online has cool options for chic festival fashion and jewelry. On the other hand, if you’re the introvert, my recommendation would be something that has a whimsical aesthetic to it with a great pattern like paisley. Free People has some great options for those introverts who enjoy looking great at a festival. It doesn’t have to be hard at all. Festival fashion isn’t rocket science. It’s just pure fun. The Belgium Brothers on Their Latest Releases and Playing at Music Festivals

INTERVIEW Jacquari Harris

hen you think of heavyweight artists in the electronic dance music world, there are so many artists to choose from. But Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike are on everyone’s list – that’s playlist, charts, you name it, they’re there. The guys are ranked No. 1 on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs poll. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike have sold-out stadiums all over the world and they’ve worked with artists such as Diplo and Ne-Yo. I recently spoke with Dimitri while he was in Belgium and he was eager to get me up to speed on everything Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. JMG: What was it like to collaborate with Diplo on one of your latest single “Hey Baby” with Deb’s Daughter? Dimitri Vegas: Well I think it’s always been a combination of all our inputs. We were going back and forth and we had a pretty strong idea from the beginning where we wanted it to end. It’s the perfect melting of our styles together. It’s funny because I like Deb’s Daughter’s voice and she even sounds a little bit like Rihanna. Is that why you guys wanted to work with her? The thing is that we made the instrumental and Deb’s vocals was one of the first ones that came back. As for us, when we heard it immediately we said this is it, we don’t have to look for a big singer to sing this. It’s perfect as it is. Plus her voice really sounds perfect on the track, and that’s the reason why we chose her. Now you guys are used to playing mostly large arenas and big festivals. What’s the difference in your opinion to play in clubs and smaller venues? Well maybe I can say our playlist is a little more experimental. On a festival, you play a one-hour set, and you go for high energy madness; where in the club you 36 JMG May/June 2017

can go with the vibe. Bringing The Madness is a year-end event that you do every year in Belgium at the Sportpaleis Stadium. In 2016, you had a sold-out crowd of 80,000 people. How does it feel to sell out the same stadium that U2, Madonna and Beyoncé have all sold out? For us, it’s still hard to believe. Like 85,000 tickets (sold) and selling 60,000 of those tickets in one hour. Yeah, that’s crazy. It’s so much support from your fans. We sold tickets in Germany two weeks before that. It’s great that Europe supports us so much. It seems like your shows are getting bigger and bigger? Why do you think your fan base is continuing to grow? We have a lot of loyal fans that have been following us for many years, and I think new music always reaches new people. I think the radio success of our latest single definitely also helped. You guys reached No. 1 on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs poll. How important is this poll to you? Well it’s of course a popularity poll. I think there’s some confusion about what the poll actually is. But it is a worldwide popularity poll and having many fans voting, there’s over a million voters. Of course, it’s a big honor. Do you have any new music that we should know about? We have a couple of new singles coming out, but I can’t reveal too much about them. But I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised. There’s going to be some crossover tracks and people might see some of their favorite artists appearing. NERVO-MANIA im and Liv of Nervo first spoke with JMG in 2011 when they first hit the scene after being on tour with Britney and releasing their debut EP. Now, the DJ/producing/writing duo are headlining festivals, their own tours and released their latest single, “In Your Arms.” INTERVIEW Jacquari Harris PHOTO Chloe Paul

JMG: What have you been up to since we last spoke in 2011? Liv: I feel like that’s a lifetime ago. I feel like we’ve grown a lot. We’ve learned so much. We’ve been around the world 45,000 times since then. I think musically we’ve evolved and we’re still evolving. What we’ve learned after time is that what we like at one moment, we may not like in six months or in a year’s time. 2016 was an interesting year for us because we knew we had to make music again that was a little different than what Nervo was in 2015, and in 2014. You know it’s always a little bit of a risk.

they’re coming out or of it ever will. The world is in such a bizarre place, and we’re seeing it from all parts of the globe, not just America. So Mim, I know that you’re singing in “In Your Arms.” I know that other artists that started out at DJs and producers such as Calvin Harris and The Chainsmokers are now using their own vocals in music. Why do you think more DJs are moving in this direction? It’s a lot easier. We always like to have other vocals on our records, one because they bring a different vibe, and a different feel. We don’t really love being the vocalists because there’s more expectations of you having to sing to the camera and all that stuff which really scares us. But we’ve tried to embrace it and thank God we’ve had a good reception. Maybe we’ll do more in the future.

When you’ve built some fans or have a network, sometimes you’re really worried about releasing music that’s very different. But we’ve learned now just to do it. So we’ve got a record that’s out now that’s quite different and people seem to be responding to it well. And we were quite nervous about releasing it, but it’s great that it’s different. I think in the beginning during the Britney Spears days, when we were opening for her, we were more concerned about what we “should” release instead of what we wanted to release. We love a lot of music. We’re not “one lane” artists. We write and produce for other people. That’s how we came about in this industry. We, as artists, love a lot of different flavors. So I think our music is always going to evolve. Your new single “In Your Arms” is out now on Big Beat Records. Was the song written because there was someone in particular that you or Liv wanted to be with, or is it a general song for lovers who miss each other and want to be together? Mim: We always draw inspiration from real feelings. Sometimes we amalgamate the story a little bit. We might be speaking to a girlfriend or a boyfriend about this scenario and we might put this scenario in a song. So there’s definitely parts that’s us. Sometimes we’re in love and sometimes we’re happy. Our records are just a diary of our lives. But now the last three records we’ve worked on were all political records. I don’t know when JMGMAGS.COM JMG 37

FORGING AHEAD

CeCe Peniston Celebrates Her Biggest Hit, “Finally” INTERVIEW Jacquari Harris

V

ocal powerhouse and ‘90s dance music icon CeCe Peniston hit a milestone in 2017 with the 25th anniversary of her biggest hit “Finally.” “Finally” is such a timeless song that it can still be heard today on radio, TV and, of course, DJ sets. A couple of years ago I heard “Finally” on an episode of Looking on HBO, and ever since then, CeCe has been on my mind. So I knew I had to catch up with the songstress when I found out that 2017 was the 25th anniversary of the song. So, CeCe and I got together and she gave me her thoughts on her signature hit and making new music.

JMG: How does it feel to still hear your song played on TV, radio and by other artists after all these years? CeCe Peniston: You know I definitely feel blessed and honored that I still get to do what I love to do. As a child, when I was 11 years old, I was like “I want to sing when I grow up.” So the ultimate flattery that you can have is to have someone duplicate your music, and for people to play my song on different TV shows and radio shows. It’s like my little angel sometimes. I think it’s that little bit of love that God gives us to let people know, “Hey I’m still around and I’m still doing what I love to do and I’m able to make memories for other people.”

Hey I’m still around and I’m still doing what I love to do and I’m able to make memories for other people.

38 JMG May/June 2017

Now with over three millions copies sold of “Finally” and a lot of awards and accolades that you received over the years, the song has brought you a lot of success. But has there ever been a downside to the success of “Finally?” Oh, absolutely! Being thrust into the limelight sometimes people aren’t walking in your shoes, so they don’t know your schedule and all of sudden I’m busy and I’m not able to be your friend right this second. I have to be the artist. So sometimes these are the things that have gotten in the way of relationships. It’s like you’re not able to have a bad day, because my job is to bring you the memories that you need and to take you away from your bad day. So my bad day doesn’t matter at that point. Your two most recent singles “Nothing Can Stop Me Now” and “Sick” are really nice ballads. Do you have a preference when it comes to making more up-tempo music, or ballads, or does it just depend on your mood and the project that you’re working on? It’s the mood and sometimes I just put stuff out there because you know it’s just something that CeCe wants to do. I feel like we shouldn’t have to be in a box. I feel like if I want to do a slow song, I should do that and I’m putting it out there. But sometimes I’m in the mood to do an up-tempo song. You can hear CeCe’s full interview, including an impromptu singing moment, on the JMG Live! Music Lounge podcast at jmgmags.com.
