Comments 11. What was most meaningful to you at this retreat? Why? Youth: • The day and the dancing. It was expressive! • Being able to share so much with everyone. Especially the sisters. • I really enjoyed experiencing different types of prayer. I found it to be very healing. I also enjoyed hearing about everyone’s progress reports. • I truly realized through this retreat that I don’t need to always talk to God through verbal prayer. I don’t always need to say something. Just listen to Him. • Well I absolutely thought this retreat was amazing! The most meaningful for me was the relationship between mentor and client and how listening is the best thing to do. This was the most meaningful for me because my friends come to me for help during hard times they are going through, so it was so great to know how the church perceives ministry. • Learning how to pray with my body because the experience was amazing. • Everyone’s devotion to their faith. It was really great to be surrounded by people who care about growing and sharing their faith with me and everyone else. • Learning that praying in new ways is helpful. Learning that you have to let your worries go to fully experience things. • The dancing prayer. It opened me up to new things. I liked praying differently. • Talking to someone about my problems (the minister/client exercise). Counselors: • Pray with clay. • Mass and being present and aware of the body and connections within our minds. • Liturgical dance. Respect bodies—the sharing in small groups and looking at myself in the mirror. • The ministerial part because it strengthened skills that I can use later on. • The most meaningful part was discovering how many different ways we can pray. It was refreshing to connect with God through dance and working with clay. Adults: • Dancing. I’ve never “danced like no one’s watching.” It was truly a growing and opening experience. • Learning to accept and embrace non-verbal prayer, learning the wisdom of my own body, learning to better trust my body, learning to better listen to my body as well as each other and to God. • The different prayer experiences. Page 4 of 6

Evaluation 2010 YTM January Retreat Summary Enfleshing the Spirit in Life and Ministry Experiential learning—easy to remember, helpful to fully enter into retreat, can use within personal and ministerial life. • Being a student/mentor I was appreciative to be included with YTM program without pressures of studies allowed me to experience the retreat as a participant with my youth. • It was very meaningful for me to be able to pray in new ways and to feel comfortable and supported doing so. Everyone at the retreat wanted to be there! Vocation Directors: • Fr. Dennis’ input, especially the first on Saturday morning, as he gave background on the gestures we make for our Liturgies. I learned a lot too as he talked about CHARA and our sacramentals?. • The enthusiasm and maturalness? of the teens toward their faith as integral in their lives. The intergenerational dimension—each respected as part of the community and welcomed the youth ministers’ enthusiasm. • The integration of prayer with expression in the body—also the practical application—dancing! Fr. Dennis created a safe space with a firm foundation of learning which enriched the days so much. • To realize that my body is important in my relationship/prayer with God. I have a tendency to pray from my head or to use formal words. • I found out I could do dancing prayer! Use Fr. Dennis again. • I continue to be impressed by the quality of the YTM program. It’s the best program of its kind that I’m aware of for high school youth. The focus on this retreat on embodied spirituality helped broaden my sense of the connection between personal wholeness and holiness. •

12. What could have been improved? How? Youth: • Nothing it was too good. • The amount of sitting and listening. Maybe more movement • I think maybe we could’ve talked in small groups about the dancing we did in the third session. Maybe it should be longer, but I’m not sure how. • During the summer retreat I was really connected to all the music. I wished we had some more worship music and praise music to sing. • I do not think anything can be improved, but I was a little uncomfortable at times. Also another thing was that I really missed singing. • The “Honoring the Body” book. I didn’t like it. Its theology was far too liberal. Please get a different book. • If Will Newkirk could have come…(cookie bowl) • More prayer time and other prayer techniques. • More time for catch phrase, longer retreat. • I thought it was a great retreat. I wish we had more time. Counselors: • More discussion with the book! • Maybe let youth sleep a little longer. • Maybe emphasize body and self worth/respect. • More application to one’s own life. The timeliness of it. Fitting everything in. It is a trial process, however, and this was his first crack at this. It will come with repetition.

Adult Mentors: • Although I understand the situation I wish I could have had more time with the book before the retreat. • I thought the first evening, Fr. Dennis was a little disorganized. Fortunately, he made up for it on an excellent morning 2 sessions. Thank you. • I felt rather uncomfortable during some of the paired scenarios during the listening/boundaries portion of the program. It was not as effective as focusing on different ways to pray. A different experience could replace this section. Vocation Directors: • Maybe the young people need to sleep a little later—say have morning prayer at nine, with breakfast at 8am. • My 2 experiences with this retreat have been very memorable so I do not have improvement suggestions at this time. A. Redigosf • Though I understand what happened with getting the book so late—it still was a challenge to get it finished. • I would have appreciated some connection with the book we read. Thanks for everything. S. Julie Brandt, SSND
