Tales after Dark – the ghostly world of Weeping Bank

Since 2009 author A.G. Smith has been performing annual readings of his Weeping Bank Library tales to enraptured audiences. Several of these haunting tales have been adapted and brought to the stages of Birmingham and London.

For the last twelve months the world of Weeping Bank has expanded, taking in more venues across the UK and culminating in an acclaimed headlining performance at the UK Ghost Story Festival. A five-star review in respected horror magazine ‘We Belong Dead’ by genre legend Emma Dark followed, and online readings have drawn praise from academics, actors, writers and musicians. They were recently spotlighted by Big Issue magazine and are regularly interviewed on radio. Weeping Bank has become synonymous with captivating storytelling and guarantees their audience will have a nerve-jangling evening filled with tension and suspense.

A.G. Smith has now been joined by lifelong friend Robert Whitehouse who manages the hectic reading tour which is regularly selling out venues and brings his expertise to all aspects of Weeping Bank online.

Robert explains, ‘we met at college in 1992 – originally bonding over a mutual love of comedy. Our early career was centred on writing and performing sketch comedy. This grew and evolved over the intervening years. Then in 2022 I saw a Weeping Bank performance at Dudley Library and felt the impact of the reading and how the packed audience reacted to it. It was like lightning in a bottle, an experience that I knew more people needed to be made

As I write this article (8th July), I find myself in the back seat, concluding the final day of an extraordinary 2000mile charity car rally across seven European nations. We are trailblazers, the first and only participants to embrace this monumental challenge using an electric vehicle, championing sustainable travel while raising awareness for breast cancer.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who has supported us on this journey. We are ecstatic to announce that we raised over £3500 for Breast Cancer Now. Throughout the rally, we distributed more than 100 information packs to people we met on the way, as well as to our fellow competitors, encouraging both men and women to routinely check their breasts.

The journey was nothing short of spectacular, with Switzerland standing out as a personal favourite. The country’s breathtaking lakes and snow-capped mountain ranges provided a picturesque backdrop to our adventure. Our grand finale featured a thrilling race around the Zandvoort Circuit, the celebrated venue of the Dutch Grand Prix.

June also proved to be a very busy month! We successfully hosted our Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Islands event, complete with wine tasting. The evening was a resounding triumph, with our destination expert captivating our guests with his remarkable knowledge and infectious enthusiasm. The Inner Wheel Club of Brewood and District

The Inner Wheel Club of Brewood and District is a member of the world wide Inner Wheel Organisation founded in Manchester 100 years ago and is celebrating its centenary this year.

The Brewood and District Inner Wheel Club established twenty one years ago currently has 22 lady members who meet each month for a meal with topical speakers. We also share ideas and plans that may benefit the club in its future programmes.

During the past year the club has supported a number of local charities including the Alzheimers Society, British Legion, Blood Bikes, Rockspur CIS, Operation Smile, Compton Hospice and Katherine House Hospice. We also collect items to be distributed to the Solace organisation based in Wolverhampton (rehousing and working with homeless individuals). At Christmas we were able to send 15 Shoe Boxes abroad to T4U and a substantial donation to Sight Savers.

To enable us to make these donations our members are involved in taking part in a number of local events including Brewood Open Gardens

We are holding our Annual Flower Arranging Demonstration on Sunday 3rd November, 2pm at Bishops Wood Village Hall ST19 9FE. Tickets £10 (including light refreshments) available from Inner Wheel members or telephone 01902 850147 - EVERYONE WELCOME!
