Welcome to Village News Welcome back to all our readers, advertisers, clubs and charities. We hope you like the new design of Village News. We felt that an overhaul was due and decided that in today’s changing world a B5 magazine would look better and be more tactile than the old A4 format. We also wanted to offer our advertisers a larger distribution at a competitive price, realising that it will take time for businesses and organisations, clubs and charities to get back on their feet. With this in mind we have increased the circulation to 17,000 homes monthly and added the villages of Tettenhall, Tettenhall Wood , Perton and Pattingham to our distribution. These villages were formerly covered by our sister publication - Villager. This means that advertisers can cover all these areas in a single publication every month and we will still be able to include articles of local interest although we are limited to how much we can include in each edition. As the advertising grows so too will the editorial space. We will also continue to publish the magazine online but experience has shown there is no substitute for putting the copy through the letterbox. For information on advertising rates, ‘What’s On’ and general enquiries please call us on 01694 245040 or 07540 257743. We look forward to hearing from you. Kevin & Gillian Arnold

News from Barnfield Sandbeds Due to Covid19, the Friends of Barnfield Sandbeds are still not allowed to meet as a group either as a committee or as a working party, so I have little to report this month. I can, however, reveal photographs of the plaques which will eventually be put upon the trees in the sandbeds to create talking points and interest for children using the site. These have been designed and painted by Charlotte Wiley and David Christison and made in ceramics by local potter, Claire Warburton. I’m sure you’ll agree they look stunning. I can’t wait to see them in place. The plan is to move them periodically to make it more fun for the children to find them and to lead them on different routes through the site. All forms of wildlife depicted on the plaques can be seen at different times of the year on the site and we hope that they will help the children find and identify the real thing.                May I also remind parents that there are a number of Spotters Guides available to download from our website on www.friendsofbarnfieldsandbeds.co.uk They include

birds, mammals, trees, wild flowers, insects and autumn fruit. Why not try them and teach your children to learn to identify, and be excited by all aspects of nature surrounding them. Joyce Bradley

Subaru Outback 2.5i SE Premium Lineartronic - Motoring with Syd Taylor In today’s chequered chess board of confusion that is the 4x4 market, it’s easy to get bushwhacked by the brandished blandishments of all those vying brands. Everyone seems to have ‘the one’ for one’s needs - but one brand you can depend on has to be Subaru. For years our miserable climate has played havoc with my happy chuckle quotient. Every day I spring forth expecting sunshine - only to be greeted with wind, rain and more of the same. However, this week has brought delight and the reason is plain to see - because out front is the Outback: Subaru’s invigorating 4x4 crossover estate. If ever a vehicle provided a pick-me-up dash of zesty promise to banish the blues, it’s this ‘go-get-’em buddy’ of 4x4 refinement. Hop into this terrain-tackling beauty and you’ll be able to face any challenge, from crowded cul-de-sac to extensive country estate. It’s lovely and easy to drive: go gently and it rides well: go rapidly and the handling is excellent. It takes you out and gets you back regardless of what the weather and pothole-blasted highways throw at it. All the time you sit high and dry, smart with a hint of smugness, replete in the knowledge that it cannot be bettered in the context of the parameters it so radically defines. In short, others might come close but the Outback shows them a clean pair of heels every time. I love the looks, versatility, roominess, load carrying capacity and confidence-inspiring solidity of build and purpose packing punch, power and personality in equal measure. It’s that rare sort of car that insists you’ll be back for more.  Even the 175 PS 2.5 litre horizontally opposed ‘boxer’ petrol engine is

Contact: 07850 399054 tough. Very smooth and pulling like a train, it is linked to Subaru’s brilliant four-wheel-drive system via the excellent CVT Lineartronic transmission - controlled manually or left as automatic. You can do 125mph if you want and overall you should get around 35/40 mpg. Star quality comes at a price of £36,770 for the top specified SE Premium version with its electrically powered seats and power operated hatch - not to mention a top quality infotainment system, sunroof and more. Big and roomy, it’s well appointed. Put simply, it’s luxurious. There’s storage aplenty too, with more pouches than you’ll find in a herd of kangaroos and each one is as capacious as those your correspondent wears beneath his eyes.  Crammed full of survival serum for today’s travel, the Outback won’t put your back out with its exceedingly comfy seats. Behind the wheel you soon settle and the range of seat and wheel adjustment is such that anyone from a Neanderthal to a gnome can tailor a good fit.     Riding and handling surprisingly well - thanks in part to the flat four engine which contributes to the low centre of gravity - you flow smoothly through bends at a pace that would have other cars of similar size wallowing. You’re always safe, of course, because there are airbags to save you and this is a car of real substance - in contrast to a flimsy-feeling Renault I drove recently. After all, what else would you expect from a company owned by Fuji Heavy industries Beyond the ordinary, in the Outback this Subaru guarantees swift and versatile transportation. The only problem that I envisage is the psychological sense of loss when leaving the car. You hanker after its assistance features (such as pre-collision braking) for day-to-day mundanities like negotiating supermarket aisles. My tip to you. If you’re looking for a 4x4 estate that says ‘old money’, is not brash and offers real class - get on the right side of an Outback and you won’t look back.

South Staffordshire Community Lottery

Providing a FREE, quick and easy fundraising platform for community groups, charities and good causes. We know that fundraising can be time consuming and a constant effort. Now more than ever good causes need to adopt simple, quick and digital fundraising solutions that can be used without the need for events or face to face interactions. South Staffordshire Community Lottery provides the perfect online platform to sustainable, year-round income. Over £60,000 has been raised by good causes since South Staffordshire Council launched the lottery in 2017. Local communities receive much needed support, and the supporters are in with the chance of winning weekly cash prizes. It’s a winwin for everyone! How it works • Supporters buy a £1 lottery ticket for their chosen good cause through the Community Lottery website. • 50% from every £1 lottery ticket goes back to the supported good cause and a further 10% goes to a central fund that supports the wider community. • Each month funds are paid directly into the good cause bank account, so the more tickets bought through a good cause

webpage, the greater the funds raised. Groups can easily raise over £500 a year with just 20 live ticket sales. The lottery draw takes place every Saturday at 8pm. Each week, there are cash prizes to be won ranging from £25, £250, £2,000 to the jackpot of £25,000. Winners are notified via email. If you are part of a local community group such as a sports club, local charity, school PTA, friends’ group, foodbank, community centre/village hall or social enterprise looking for a free, quick and easy way of raising funds – register your cause today. There is no risk, no cost, no administration and free marketing tools to help you with your campaign. Your cause will start fund raising from the very first ticket bought through your personalised lottery webpage. To register as a good cause with the South Staffordshire Community Lottery visit www.southstaffslottery.co.uk today or call the Lottery Support Line on telephone 01902 213777 Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm.

October in the Garden The range of perennial plants available from garden centres for late summer/early autumn flowering is increasing year on year. Heuchera have lovely coloured foliage all year round from lime green, through copper and bronze and the lovely purple shades many with prominent leaf veins which make a lovely contrast. They’re easy to grow – ideal in sun or semi shade and are not damaged by slugs and snails. Another pretty summer/early autumn flowering herbaceous plant is the Rudbeckia with its dark centres and yellow and rusty autumnal coloured petals. In the veg patch, harvest onions and potatoes now – lift up onions and allow to dry out where they’ve been growing if the weather is fine, before storing. Potatoes should be stored in a cool but frost free environment. Carrots and parsnips can be left in the ground until needed. Any green waste can be put onto the compost. It usually takes 12 months to rot down green waste into a usable compost. Switch to Autumn lawn feeds now and apply when rain is forecast. They contain less nitrogen then the summer forms, so the grass strengthens its roots rather than puts on a lot of green soft growth. A new product this

year is the Autumn Lawn food from Viano the makers of M O Bacter, again this is a natural product which discourages moss and strengthens the grass roots without encouraging a lot of green growth. Overwintering onions, shallots and broad bean seeds are in stock, plant them as soon as you can and you’ll get an early maturing crop next year. Winter vegetable plants are also available – Cabbages, Sprouts, Broccoli, Lettuce. Replant cleared borders with winter pansies, violas, sweet williams and wallflowers. Hopefully our own field grown wallflowers will be available from the end of September – they give excellent value for money - flowering in the spring with the bulbs and they have a lovely perfume. When planting in tubs put several layers of bulbs in, starting with daffodils then the smaller bulbs and finally plant pansies, violas or wallflowers last. If you want Hyacinths in flower for Christmas make sure that they’re planted as soon as possible – by the first week in October at the latest, and put into a dark cool place until the shoots are 2-3cm tall, then bring out into the light. Sue’s Roly Poly Puddings - Comfort Food at its Best! I started my business, Roly Poly Puddings, when I made Christmas puddings for friends and family who said they were so good that I should sell them! And so, several years later, that is what I started to do. Since then I have moved into different flavours including jam, syrup, sticky toffee, chocolate, butterscotch, cherry and almond and lemon and lavender. During this time I have sold my puddings through pubs, restaurants, food fairs, markets, shows and the occasional retail outlet.

All our puddings are made using high quality and seasonal ingredients, home-grown when possible. We offer a variety of flavours and serving sizes from 1 to 12 portions. Our traditional Christmas Puddings are a speciality.

and jellies. The last are not so well known, but can be used in a variety of ways, with hot or cold meat, in sauces and with cheese, or just spread on toast or scones. I use lots of different flavour combinations, and they can be sweet or savoury. I also supply hand-made mincemeat and brandy butter – just perfect for the festive season. Our own home-grown organic apple juice will also be available in December. Talking of apples, Autumn and Winter are not the same without rich, delicious chutneys. Spicy, mild or a special Christmas edition, are all available. I make all my products at home, and the puddings are cooked in a steaming oven, for that authentic homemade taste. However, they can be easily reheated in a microwave for convenience. They also come in three sizes. Small (1/4 pint), medium (1 pint), and large (2 pint), and will feed anything from one to twelve people. The sponge puddings have a refrigerated shelf life of three weeks, and also freeze beautifully. The Christmas puddings just need to be kept in a cool dark place until required. All combinations of the above can be supplied in hampers for that extra special present, such as for Christmas, Birthdays and Anniversaries, or to just say ‘thank you’. I am registered with South Staffs Council, have a 5 star hygiene certificate, and am fully insured. I will deliver free of charge to properties within a 10 mile radius of Brewood and I look forward to meeting new customers. Flexible Working Made Easier With West Midlands Trains New Travel Option West Midlands Trains, operator of West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway, has responded to the changing needs of its customers following the coronavirus pandemic by launching its new flexible ticket offering, Flexi-Travel. As the nation continues to work from home after lockdown, with some returning to the office part-time, the new Flexi-Travel ticket allows commuters to make 10 return journeys on the same route within one calendar month. This is the equivalent of someone commuting to work in the office two to three days a week. With road traffic already at 86% of pre-lockdown levels, the Flexi-Travel ticket represents an enticing prospect for passengers as journeys are not time-restricted. The convenient and accessible ticket also offers a 5% saving compared with buying return tickets. Lawrence Bowman, deputy managing director at West Midlands Trains, said: “With recent research indicating a change in work patterns and people splitting their working week between home and office, this ticket represents an affordable solution for our customers. FlexiTravel is a fairer, flexible ticket which responds to these major changes and provides the best value for part-time commuters.” Flexi-Travel is available to purchase from staffed tickets

offices at stations. It is available on all West Midlands Railway routes as well as all London Northwestern Railway routes in and out of London. All tickets must have the same start and end stations. What’s more, West Midland Trains continues to thank its customers for responsible travelling during summer. Lawrence comments: “We can’t thank our customers enough for all their efforts during this time, maintaining distances whenever possible, buying tickets online, travelling at quieter times and allowing extra time for journeys – and most importantly wearing face coverings at all times (unless exempt). We will continue to run as many trains as we can, with as many carriages as possible to maximise space on board. Strict cleaning procedures are in place on trains and at stations, using the latest antiviral equipment and techniques and hand sanitisers at our bigger stations.” About West Midlands Trains West Midlands Trains operates both West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway services. West Midlands Railway services operate to destinations across the West Midlands via Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Snow Hill. How Much Do You Know About Flags, Ensigns and Jacks? We all know what a Flag is don’t we? Well probably not all of us. At least we all recognise our own country’s emblem, the Union FLAG, commonly, but nearly always incorrectly, known as the Union JACK. When the Flag is flown correctly from a ship it is flown from a short flagpole on the bow. The pole is known as the ‘jackstaff’ and when in this position the flag is then correctly termed the Union Jack. Ships fly an ensign at the rear of the vessel to identify their country of origin; this is commonly the flag of their nation in the top left hand quarter, on a plain coloured ground. In the 17th Century the United Kingdom had three different ground colours to denote the three squadrons of the Royal Navy: Red, White and Blue. The ensigns, of a standard size, were introduced so that gunners could more easily estimate the range between ships so as to properly ‘lay’ their cannons, and to recognise their own vessels. The Red Ensign, a Union Flag on a red ground was chosen to represent the most senior of the three Naval

Squadrons, but the same ensign was already in use by British m e rc h a nt m e n , and to avoid confusion, this decision was later reversed. The ‘Red Duster’ is still the only ensign which should be flown by a British vessel. The White Ensign is the Union Flag superimposed on the white ground and red cross of St George. It is used exclusively by ships of the Royal Navy and by members of the Cowes-based Royal Yacht Squadron. Vessels, other than those owned by the RN, or members of the RYS (with a member on board) are liable to prosecution (and, in theory, hanging!) if they fly this ensign. The Blue Ensign (Union Flag on a blue background) may only be flown by permission from the Admiralty and those vessels have to meet strict criteria. An officer of the

Royal Naval Reserve has to be in command; they must have a certain number of RNR Officers and Ratings on board and hold an Admiralty Warrant. Membership

of certain yacht clubs may also entitle owners to fly the Blue Ensign, usually “Defaced” with a club insignia in the bottom right hand corner of the fly. The Yellow Ensign. Until about 100 years ago, any RN Captain who lived long enough, regardless of merit, was promoted to Rear Admiral. This created injustice to worthy officers, so the solution was to promote both but to give command to the more worthy as “Rear Admiral of the Blue”. The less worthy officer had the rank but no responsibility. Such officers were, behind their backs, referred to as “Admiral of the Yellow” (i.e. in charge of the beach). The Yellow Ensign never therefore existed, but everyone in the Navy knew what the term “Flying the Yellow Ensign” meant. Don’t miss out on the chance to make your community safer! Local community groups across Staffordshire can now apply for funding to turn great ideas for making their area safer into reality.

Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire and Rescue and Crime, Matthew Ellis made £200,000 available this year through his People Power Fund and Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) Fund. Applicants have until 14 September to make their application to either fund.  Hundreds of ideas have been funded by the Commissioner over recent years, with grants of £100 – £2,000 available through the People Power Fund and £2,000 – £10,000 through POCA.   The People Power Fund supports locally-driven community safety activities throughout Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. These could include providing long-term positive activities for young people to help reduce antisocial behaviour, mentoring programmes for local groups or activities that reassure and improve the quality of life for local people.  The Commissioner’s Proceeds of Crime Fund sees money and assets confiscated from criminal seizures funding FOR ALL TYPES OF GAS REPAIR, projectsSERVICING to make communities safer. AND INSTALLATION   Matthew Ellis said: “The People Power Fund helps local INCLUDING LPG, BOILERS, communities with their ideas & to FIRES make their areas safer. COOKERS It is really easy to apply for and is about preventing

problems like anti-social behaviour through better security or anything that is likely to successfully deter wrong-doing and community nuisance. Staffordshire Police strip offenders of their ill-gotten gains and then we make it available in grants to support activities preventing crime via the Proceeds of Crime Fund. It’s a bit of a virtuous circle - criminals commit crime, police via the courts seize their assets and that provides money to make places safer.” People Power Fund applications need to be sponsored by the group’s neighbourhood police officer or PCSO and will initially be assessed by the local Community Safety Partnership.   You can find out more and apply at : www.staffordshire-pfcc.gov.uk/get-involved/community-funding/
