HAUS GRÜNEBURGWEG

Design and implementation planning of a historical housing building in Frankfurt am Main. It is a house located in Westen, built in the sixties. The aim of the project is to revitalize a house that was built after the Second World War in order to satisfy the lack of housing of those years.

The key was to introduce in this historical building all the current confort amenities of a luxury house, such as a lift and a larger staircase.

ENSAMBLE PLACE

Single house prototype built with industrial shelving profiles. The aim of the research project was to transform prefabricated products into flexible, light, low cost and easily constructed solutions for different scales and functions.

I was part of the research building team of two Ensamble Studio projects: Ensamble Place in Madrid and Cyclopean House in Brookline, USA. Two single houses, two prefabricated ways of building.

CYCLOPEAN HOUSE

Brookline, Massachusetts, USA, 2015. Ultra-light construction system: solid cores made of foam -98% air- reinforced by steel profiles and fire-proofed by a thin layer of cement and fibers.

The house is made of seven beams; each of them specializes in one action: sleeping, working, projecting, cooking and bathing, storing, seating, and dining. The life of the house will origin in a journey that goes from its place of manufacture, Madrid, to the place where it will definitely lie: at the top of an existing garage located in a calm residential neighborhood of Brookline. Designed and built in Madrid, assembled in Boston.

TIPPET RISE ART CENTER

Much more than imposing new conditions on the site, we listen to what this privileged untouched landscape offers to situate our actions in an ambiguous position between nature, architecture, art and landscape engineering and explore new tools for the development of technologies that use available resources to discover architecture in direct conversation with landscape.

Inverted Portal

Fishtail, Montana, USA, 2016. Located just outside of Fishtail, Montana, in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, Tippet Rise Art Center will be home to a set of experiential programs aiming at the inextricable linkage between art and nature. Music, land art and land architecture here work together to imagine possible hybridizations able to immerse the visitor into an unprecedented experience.

Using the green areas to connect the Old Town with the other OLD TOWN PROBLEM ghbourhoods

The Old Town of Santiago is losing its residential function and it is becoming an odríguez

amusement park for tourists. This is caused by the lack of facilities for everyday shopping as well as car parks, byNEW the difficulties that the traders have in storing SOLUTION: FIVE TRADE AREAS their goods and by the troubles to get to the green areas that& go around the SOCIAL TRADE + + LEISURE Old Town.

OLD TOWN MARKET

One possible solution would be to provide a new distribution system for the neighbourhood, made up of five new trade facilities located on SOLUTION: FIVE NEW TRADE AREAS the Ring Road. SOCIAL & These have three elements in common: they all have a warehouse, TRADE + + LEISURE they complement an existing building and finally they all compete with shopping malls by mixing retail trade uses with social and leisure ones.

Of these five new trade areas, the one that I chose to develop is located in the Plaza de Abastos. Like other traditional markets in Europe, when it is closed, the public area around becomes a waste of space. The purpose of my building is to become a complement to the trade activity of the Old Town Market. The new uses included are a warehouse, a supermarket that will improve the nonperishable goods offer of the market, a toy library and a multipurpose room.

COMPLEMENT BUILDING This building is conceived as a way to make the storage part of the space. This is achieved through two industrial shelving units which turn into a new dark entrance to the Old Town that reaches up to the light of the historic Santiago, a World Heritage city. In addition, one of these shelves appears in the public space and it is lightly covered by a glass shelter respecting the scale of the historic buildings and giving this useless square back to the residents.

Two courtyards distribute the two-storey supermarket, introducing zenital light and vegetation into the space, two features that are often overlooked in the design of similar buildings. The way this flexible space was created will allow for future changes to the use of the building; as a result, the supermarket may one day be converted into a different way of shopping, or the warehouse into a large vending machine continuously providing goods for new residents.

RENOVATE TO PRESERVE The compact cities that developed in Europe before the contemporary shopping trends are the future of Urbanism. This is the ultimate aim of my proposal: the renovation of historic centres, like the Old Town of Santiago, by bringing back the retail trade that provides residents with the supplies they need.

8 COMPLEX WORKS JUANJO FERNĂ NDEZ RODRĂ?GUEZ

VISITOR CENTRE

The building links Ares town with the river and the rivershore forest. Therefore, it consists of a series of platforms on different levels leading down to the river. The building is configured through a series of sand-colored granite walls of varying heights on which a 20 cm thick light concrete slab rests with a wooden inner cladding.

CIVIC CENTRE

Single storey building open to the outside during the day, in which the activities take place within different independent spaces surrounded by glass. The entire building is covered by a single roof and protected from the outside by a gallery of slats allowing pedestrians to go around the building and access it and at the same protecting the interior from direct sunlight.

REST AREA

Space for having a break during a walk in the mountains of Courel, Galicia.

SAINT JAMES WAY TOURIST INFORMATION CENTER Exhibition space in Copenhaguen about Saint James Way. Audiovisual communications space: audio as people that have made a pilgrmage to Santiago can have an oral exchange and visual as images of the Way are constantly reproduced. The building is a museum-cinema space: images are continuously displayed on the five wavy concrete sheets in the inside of the space. Thanks to the light entrance the inside is transformed into a mystic and misterious space.
