Gilded ornate brass hilt with hand chased eagle head pommel, having foliate decorated guard, Federal Eagle langets and incised ivory grip. Straight steel single fuller blade is double etched, gilded and blued with foliate and classical design elements, with stand of arms and Federal Eagle. They were issued to five northern units, including 83rd Pennsylvania and 72nd New York, as well as some militia. Molded leather body with mounted red wool pom-pom, brass plate depicts laurel and oak leaf wreath surrounding infantry horn, surmounted under spread wing Federal eagle.
