THE MIDDLE With the iPhones and Android devices developed, it is easy to forget Palm company has made it all happen. Palm produced the devices that established the basic form factor that later smartphones would use. After earlier attempts by Apple and others, Palm proved there was a market for a third category of portable computing device. This book focus on how the brand evolves, the visual system such as colors, typefaces, layouts, and contrast that can contribute to the rebranding.

FORMER IDENTITY Before jumping into sketching, I looked up the inital Palm logo, It is a very simple wordmark that has organic shape. Thus, for the new brand logo, I believe that the sharpe and forward “arrow � could be used in the future. To convey the feeling of organization, accessibility, and connection.

KEYWORDS

To create a logo which serves for our brand, it is essential to choose a symbol which embodies the soul of our brand. The three keywords best represent what we aspire the brand to become. The keywords are more defined in those phrases to help visualize their meaning and attitude. The three keywords that best represent the spirit and mission of our brand are: Organize, Access, and Connect. We developed our new identity by sketching logos in three directions, each belonging to one of those keywords. During each phase, divergence is paramount so we can explore many solutions. Beginning with rough sketches, we seek to explore solution in three categories.

KEYWORDS A ORGANIZE As a pioneer of smart devices. Palm strives to help people organize their personal life and business information. Palm provides a series of products and services that enable people to better manage and improve their life, in any location. Palm gives people more control over their schedule and information.

KEYWORDS B ACCESS The way people, work, study, and play is changing with the prevalence of robotization, AI, the internet of things (IOT). Palm provides services enabling customers to use a single device across country borders giving instant access to information without swapping devices. Palm provides support for organizations to access vital business systems

KEYWORDS C CONNECT Palm cooperates with other industries to build strong business connections for future innovation. Palm products and services will be more than a series of gadgets(watch, phone, laptop) digital assistant. Palm intergrates technology with the travel, medical, and automotives industries to connect people and businesses through information.

The collection of initial ideas within this comp revolve around stimuli from the outdoors converging into a center of attention, symbolizing the organized information that the user might access with our future products. I think hands, palm leaves, rounded shapes, and fingerprints relate to the unity and connection the Palm brand represents.

The main focus in this round was finding an icon representing how to organize information, which is a united action. I explored geographic shapes because they can convey a modern and futuristic Palm look.

In this round, I tried different ways to represent the letter P. I used an arrow, 3D folded shapes, and infinity. The Palm logo should not only convey helping people organize information, but also deliver possibility and future development.

After several sketches, I brought some new ideas, such as eagles, outstretched wings, and mountain to represent the expansion of the brand vision.

Many computing companies use a cloud as their icon. I think it is a appropriate idea to explore especially since cloud storage is a future deliverable for the Palm extension.

In this second comp, the core idea is to express Palm organizes information. I decided to use the letter P as the main element to my future brand icon. I tried a great deal of solutions, such as an arrow enclosed in the P, different angles, and negative space.

ICON

The finalized “P” icon is selected to be the new face of our brand. We decided to give the vertical stroke a bit movement. So, I cutted 45 degree angle at the button to make it more dynamic. The triangle component conveys information. The vertical part illustrates the meaning of strong. The “arrow” shape means look forward the powerful future. The overall structure means Palm helps you organize information on the go.

The finalized wordmark chosen to represent our brand, with subtle change. I gave “A” 60 degree and 90 degree to M. At the button of “P” also has 45 degree angle to balance with Palm icon. The missing segment in A also give a hint to the concept of Palm.

ICON & WORDMARK LOCKS UP

The wordmark should share similar characteristics with the icon. For the wordmark we have chosen, we initially used Gotham typeface to be the model. But we found that it cannot reflect the concept idea very much. So I tried to create the letters on my own. It mostly keep the features of geometric sans serif typeface. To provide a fresh and modern look of our company, I integrated the personality of icon which represents “look forward” meaning to the stroke “P”, ”A”, ”M” and share the same color on them. I specifically highlight the letter P to resonate with the content. Additionally, I made the softer P in the wordmark to create contrast with the icon. To emphasize the idea of organizing and accessing information, I removed the horizontal line in the wordmark “A”. It became cleaner and shaped an triangle to match the icon.

LOOK ALIKE LOGO Before jumping into our design, it is crucial to display some visual research for other logos in the market to avoid that we have has already been done before. There are a range deal of logos created in the past. It is hard to create something original. However, based on the vital ideas of the brand, as well as the products and services and other industries they can provide in a associated department. Every logo has different meaning from our company. It is good to know the similar logos and how they differs from our design.

MOVING FORWARD

Now that we wholly researched other logos in the market. We know that it is not the one that has been done before. Even though some might look similar, they different from each other visually and conceptually. We are now able to start using the logo for different applications since we have the finalized logo, and compared to the look-alike logos. Before applying the logo to various deliverables, we have to set up some rules to ensure the logo is displayed clearly and legible, as well as with the main ideas of our brand flawless. These rules will be seen in Visual Standard Guide.
