About

Have you ever had weird dreams? David Lynch is a great dreamer and a talented storyteller. I am attracted by not only his dreams, but also the way he presents people in the world of dreams. I created promotional collateral for a film festival for David Lynch and extracted a theme that ties together eight of his films. I conceptualized them into a visual system and coordinated a complex set of materials based on the movie festival.

David Lynch Film Festival

Project: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Approach

Distorted Darkness is the film festival that I designed for David Lynch. A common theme throughout his movies is characters who face a huge challenge and are searching for the way out. They discover that the world is twisted and darker than they thought, and they try to grasp at something to escape from the darkness. I used colors, imagery and type treatment to create a visual system that symbolizes twisted dreams.

About

Makeup is one of the most critical topics surrounding females. Some people need it because it can help them present themselves and feel more confident. Max Factor is a historical brand that helped a lot of women gain their confidence in front of the camera. Max Factor grew rapidly during Hollywood’s Golden Age, but it has started to lose its force in today’s beauty market in the US. I rebranded Max Factor through providing it a new visual direction and developed a new identity and visual system based on this direction.

Max Factor Rebrand

Project: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Approach

In order to expand the vision of Max Factor, the new Max Factor will not only focus on helping people to present their outer beauty in front of the camera, but also lead them to build their inner confidence. I use a serif typeface as the base to design the new logo and also use a serif as display type in the visual system. Because the major audience is female, I set my overall color tone as warmer, and use yellow as the dominate color to present confidence.

About

Architecture refers to the whole, or part of, the behavioral process of planning, designing, constructing, and using those structures that provide space for human activities or have internal space. Each country and region, more or less, has its unique structural characteristics. With the development of science and technology and the overcrowding of modern society, people pay more and more attention to the problem of whether buildings can coexist harmoniously with the natural environment.

Visionary Architecture Exhibition

Project: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Approach

I tried to tie my concept with technology and the environment; the dominant blue and green color theme is used to present the link to the natural environment. I also borrow some paper marks from traditional architectural blueprints. Another concept I incorporate here is “macro” and “micro”. In the motion graphics of the poster and the layout of the book, I present this idea through zooming in from an overview of the city to a close look at building texture.

In recent decades “landscape” has taken on an expanded definition in architecture. In the first half of the 20th century, the architectural avant-garde celebrated autonomy from nature, and architects devised utopia schemes for creating urban realms ex novo, with little consideration for their surroundings. More recently, the challenges of a threatened environment and rapidly expanding cities have fostered a revised understanding of landscape. Harmony between the spatial, social, and environmental aspects of human life has become a priority in political thought, and this has had profound reverberations in both architecture and landscape design. The tern “Landscape”—no longer understood merely as nature untouched—now encompasses complex interventions by architects and landscape architects in urban and rural surroundings. Reverberations in both architecture and landscape design. “Landscape”—no longer understood merely as nature untouched—now encompasses complex interventions by architects and landscape architects in urban and rural surroundings. Cities are built and developed to satisfy people’s needs. While dreaming about a better city or living environment, we should also consider the negative effect we might bring to nature and other species. Every one of us has the responsibility to build a more harmonious society of the future.

About

Succulents are a particularly large plant species, with many hybrids in addition to the original varieties. This makes it harder for succulent lovers to distinguish between varieties. The color, leaf shape and plant morphology of succulents are also affected by light, water, temperature and soil. Correctly identifying the types of succulents can help us manage and care for our succulents more effectively. Succi Hug is an app designed for succi lovers.

Succi Hug Cellphone App

Project: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Approach

Succi Hug is a Cellphone App. Its main functions include identifying and introducing varieties and communicating with succulent lovers near you. I choose to use a set of softer colors to make this app look more friendly; adding some pink and yellow can create more variation and bring an energetic feeling to this app. I used Questa, which is a unique serif typeface in the modern style, and Questa Sans to harmonize with it.

About

Typography contains more possibilities than we imagine. To discover the different shapes of the same letterform, I explore different ways to handle my type, and I end up with one technique, which is to cut the letters into parts, lay them on a piece of paper, and take photos while shaking the paper. Through this process, I get various shapes from the same words, and I develop them into a series of three movie posters.

BOMB CIT Y Movie Posters

Project: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Approach

After getting the technology to create a cataclysmic letterform, I try to transfer it into a design and apply it in the proper place. Since our task was to design a series of movie posters with the type treatment, I started searching for an appropriate movie. Bomb City is a 2017 American crime film directed by Jameson Brooks. I assume the letterforms composed throughout this method effectively display the tone and the characteristics of the movie.

About

Female artists are rarely among the go-to names in the Surrealist canon. Man Ray, DalĂ and Magritte often come up, but Kay Sage or Leonora Carrington? In my mind, female surrealist artists should have special significance in the history of art, not only because they are not inferior to the excellent works of male artists, but also because of their passion and persistence in what they love. We can recognize their unique self-definition in their self-portraits.

La Art Magazine

Project: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Approach

I generated an exhibition around several surrealist women artists at LACMA, and the layout for an exhibition catalog. I also created a quarterly magazine in the name of the museum called LA Art. The magazine will include articles by some of the most recently featured artists and a calendar of the museum’s upcoming events. Layout and typography skills are applied to make them enjoyable reading material.

Digital and Social Media Conference

Project: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

151

152

approach

About

The digital and social media landscape continues to change at an unprecedented pace. What’s cutting-edge today may be passÊ tomorrow. Digital and Social Media hosted by ANA (Association of National Advertisers) is a yearly conference. Based on the theme of this conference, I designed a cohesive visual system to communicate its particular topic. The goal is to help inform the audience about the subject and important content through conceptual ideas and visual design skills.

Digital and Social Media Conference

Project: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Approach

Because the theme of the conference is digital and social media, visually I used a stacked triangular composite to represent the tight connection between electronic technology and social media. The small triangular lines scattered around represent individuals, and they are being drawn closer together like the center of connection. At the same time, overlapping outlines and fill shapes are intended to express the non-uniformity of electronic information.

About

The annual report is an essential document for each company to make a yearly summary. The primary readers of this report are the company’s employees, managers, shareholders, and investors. Therefore, it is inevitable that a large amount of data will appear in the annual report. But many companies don’t invest the resources to design and format their annual reports well, making them tedious and difficult to read. Therefore, in this project, I chose a company’s annual report and redesigned it.

Nu Skin Annal Report

Project: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Approach

NuSkin 2017 Annual Report is the one I chose to redesign. Since annual reports are hardly perceived as enjoyable reading material, the goal is to establish cohesive visual language in typography, charts and graphics. In terms of color selection, I use pink to highlight the texture of skin, and green to express the concept of environmental protection of this brand. I also redesigned the original charts following the visual system I created.

About

Microfiber is synthetic fiber finer than one denier or thread. It goes into waterways with washing waste water and is eaten by the same marine life we eat. However, many people do not realize the seriousness of the problem. At the same time, the market share of synthetic fibers continues to rise for a variety of reasons, which means that the more sources of microfibers we’re purchasing, the more of them are falling off our clothes and getting into our stomachs.

AQUAUR A / MFA Thesis

Project: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

Approach

For my thesis project, I have created AQUAURA, which is an environmental organization tackling this serious problem. Included are a set of advertising campaigns to help people learn about what microfiber is; a shopping system with a shopping application system of shopping and packaging to guide people to buy less synthetic fabric; and an environmental exhibition and website to teach people how to deal with the synthetic textiles in their closet and share the latest solutions and advice about this microfiber pollution.

In Appreciation

Family

I would like to thank all the instructors and classmates I met at the Academic of Art University, who accompanied me in growing, and gave me inspiration, support and encouragement. And special thanks to my parents, who have been supporting my American dream for the past seven years. Without all of you, I might never have had the chance to go so far and have such bright prospects before me.
