The de-familiarization process starts with the analysis and mechanical reconstruction of the European Mole. Through analyzing the skeleton structure and moving mechanism, the project was, in its first stage, developed into an instrument that utilizes the essential mechanical system of the mole.

In later stage, a site was created, as a result of approriation of the instrument configuration and moving mechanism. In the final stage, the site was developed into a exhibition space.

The project starts with analyses of both modern and historical precedents. The modern precedent is the Moriyama House, located in Tokyo, Japan, and designed by SANAA in 2005. The historical precedent is the shotgun house originated from New Orleans during the 1850s. The end result is a family cemetary complex located on the shore of Cayuga Lake.

Flying is a cursed dream. There is a formidable barrier lies between humans and the sky. The movie clip from Miyazaki Hayao’s Porcco Rosso captures the cruelty of the dream and that mighty barricade. Yet at the same time, there lies an incredible beauty in that upwards vision. This project attempts to capture the lightness and whiteness of flying, clouds’ ephemeral framing of the sky, the look into the emptiness and scale-less-ness of the sky, and that arm reaching to the infinity no matter how impossibly far.

This project is a co-housing + West-side Bazaar market in the Grant Ferry neighborhood in Buffalo, NY for its refugee resettlement program. The residential requirement is to be able to accommodate refugee families that come in various sizes and structures. The Bazaar market is an incubator project that supports refugees to start their own business through selling handcraft goods and food.

30

Through strategic placement of programs, the goal is to form an atmospheric dynamic that welcomes refugee longing for a sense of community, security, and belonging. The project is also an experiment on spatial fluidity, visual connectivity, and layers of publicity.

This drawing manifesto is a critique on the current urban and real-estate issues in Beijing City: Centered city structure and resource distribution leads to a hierarchical stratification in the city residents perception. Separation of residential and commercial areas creates traffic pressure both to the city facilities and in commuters. Unfair real-estate market and speculative consumer behaviors contribute the unreasonably high rates for housings.

52

Precedents studied include: KM3 by MVRDV Walking City by MOS Architects Fujian Tulou (traditional co-living housing type in Southern China)

53

This manifesto is a proposal to democratize the current city model with an overarching hexagonal grid that informs the mega-city-structure as well as a systematic distribution of programs and services. City grid informs new ways of living, working, shopping, socializing, and transportation.
