CITY STREET ANALYSIS ESSAY From the integration maps, we can apparently see that there are several locations which are most isolated in some particular regions. I think the most vital reason is that the north-east of Beijing located in the boundary between fully developed urban area and rural area. So after a few decades development in this area, there are many parks and golf clubs constructed near the residential communities. Also there are some villages which are not developed nowadays. These two main reason are related to the most isolated areas. For my research for city of Beijing , there are several reasons for why this area contains lots of residential communities. First of all, this region locates in the Chaoyang district which is one of the fastest growing districts in the Beijing Metropolitan Area. According to Chaoyang's official website, the district is home to more than 60 percent of the foreign business agencies in Beijing, over 3,000 foreign companies, 167 international news agencies, and two-thirds of the 158 of the global top 500 transnational companies that have invested in Beijing. This district also serves as Beijing's diplomatic district. Except for those of Russia and Luxembourg, all foreign embassies to China are located in the district. The Beijing Capital Airport also located near the north-east of Chaoyang district. As the convenient public transportation system in the Chaoyang district, the large community area were set in north-east of Beijing. Considering with the distance to Central Business District and Airport, this area is the best choice for residents to live. That is why there are many public parks and golf clubs for residents’ entertainment life. In some area, we can see that some large international residential communities are more isolated comparing with other parts. Because of the security reasons, only residents who live there have activities in that location. In the north-east of that integration maps, there are less roads out of the 5th Ring Road. With many international firms selecting these areas for their factories, parts of these location become isolated due to the road in the factories or surrounding the factories. So these reasons I mentioned above are the direct effects to lead to the isolated problems. The 2nd city locates in the middle of China in Shanxi province. This historic city has the most common orientation with girds from north-south direction and east-west direction. From the integration maps we can easily understand that the main streets connected south to north and east to west are integrated very well. Because the terrain of city Taiyuan which surrounding by mountain, the only way to expand the city is to develop to the south flat area. Comparing with the grids in the north of city, the southern area has less roads intersected each other. So that in the south part, some of the streets are more isolated than the northern part. Some of parts in the center of the maps also show some areas that are isolated, because there are some public parks and a few universities locating in these parts. In addition, the main river called Fen River cross the city from north to south. So there are some roads near the river which is also independent from the whole city. The last part that has lots of isolated areas is in the eastern and western mountains. Apparently, these parts are more difficulty to construct road and building for expanding the city.


spatial ANALYSIS ESSAY The DAAP building consists of many different function spaces for variety of majors’ students and faculties using. In the 7th floor of DAAP building, the whole floor is served for architecture programs. So this floor contains 4 large studios for different grades of students and several offices for professors and faculties. Since the wide open spaces provided for studio students, these parts become the most connected space which distinctly show in the topo surface. Along the corridor which connected the different studio parts, lots of interior walls divide tons of small space for professors and faculties’ activities. Because these areas are the private spaces, the most isolated spaces are naturally selected in this part. This spatial arrangement skillfully combines the students’ studios and faculties’ offices in order to make the shortest distance for professors moving from different classrooms. Also the separate studios’ locations allow distinguishing the variety of grades for students. In the one side of the office area, two bathrooms are designed for people in this floor. According to the visualization from the topo surface, we can easily understand that the more open spaces in 7th floor, the more connected they are in the building. For the most connected parts, the studios the glass curtain wall also provide the best connection with outside. Supporting with a few columns instead of walls, the glass curtain wall allow more sunlight shooting into the studios and also can let students get feedback from the outside. The three main staircases and two elevators which located in three different areas efficiently solve the circulation in different level. The office zone is designed very well, because professors have their private spaces that do not disturb each other and these offices are also easily recognized by students who have a question for teacher. On the other side of the corridor, the faculties’ areas are suitable organized with a small public conference room connecting with other offices inside. The open spaces in the studios give the flexibility of using space for students in order to fix the problem for different population in each semester.
