HISTORical attractions

Founded in 1790, Wythe County was named for the first signer of the Declaration of Independence for Virginia – George Wythe. Early settlement can be credited to the access to water (the New River and many creeks) and the abundance of natural resources, including lead. One hundred acres was selected as the county seat in 1792 and Evansham, now Wytheville, became the central town. The history of the area patterns the history of the nation with many interesting events, legends, and characters along the way. Begin your historical tour at the Thomas J. Boyd Museum and then continue with the HallerGibboney Rock House Museum. Medicine, the Civil War, and polio’s unique impact are a few of the topics covered. The Great Lakes to Florida Highway Museum depicts the mid-20th century era with its unique look at transportation. The region’s only African American Heritage Museum is located within the Wytheville Training School Cultural Center and has an emphasis on education through photographs and exhibits. Five locations on the Virginia Civil War Trails mark the route of Toland’s Raid and offer a beautiful scenic drive between locations.

Also located in the historic district, the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum shares the story of First Lady Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, From Wytheville to the White House. Exhibits chronicle her Virginia heritage as well as influential aspects of her years as First Lady. Overlooking the New River, the Historic Shot Tower was built more than 150 years ago to make ammunition for the firearms of the early settlers. Lead from the nearby Austinville Mines was melted in a kettle atop the 75-foot tower and poured through a sieve, falling through the tower and an additional 75-foot shaft beneath the tower into a kettle of water. A nearby monument honors native son Stephen F. Austin who would later be known as the “Father of Texas”.

A First Lady’s Museum BIRTHPLACE AND CHILDHOOD HOME

Steeped in history and legend, Major Graham Mansion and The Mansion at Fort Chiswell are located minutes from I-77 and 81 and are open seasonally for special events and tours. In neighboring Bland County, Wolf Creek Indian Village & Museum has meticulously reconstructed wigwams to match the layout of an excavation dating to 1215 A.D. Guides demonstrate living skills through the use of handmade replicas of tools and containers, hides, and various crafts.

It would be a challenge for motorcycle riders to find a more beautiful driving trail than the scenic back roads of Southwest Virginia. Looping through the Blue Ridge Mountain range, The Claw of the Dragon is becoming one of the most popular destinations in the South for motorcycle enthusiasts. With the charming town of Wytheville as the center or hub, the trail features loops totaling over 350 miles as it ventures over to the community of Marion to the west and Galax to the east. The drive meanders through parts of seven Virginia counties but is easily accessible from Interstates 77 or 81 as a starting point. Loops include leisurely rides through some of the most beautiful land in Virginia as well as the challenge of the “Back of the Dragon,” the heart-stopping two-lane ribbon that follows Virginia Route 16 over three mountains between Tazewell and Marion.

Most restaurants are easily visible from the three Wytheville interstate exits, but, Wytheville also has a directional sign program that can lead visitors to numerous restaurants located throughout the town. The charts on the following pages will show you a sampling of the area’s many restaurants and will give you the details you need to make a dining decision including what meals each restaurant serves. TRAILS Mountain Crossroads Artisan Trail

Sipping Virginia wine on the deck overlooking rows of grape vines can be a great start to your adventure on the Mountain Crossroad Artisan Trail. Wine tastings, good food, farmer’s markets and herb gardens greet visitors who plan an indulgent visit to Wythe and Bland Counties. Home of Southwestern Virginia’s only Butterfly House, visitors can walk into an authentic Indian Village, enjoy close-up visits to safari creatures at a unique animal park, and experience music venues to stir the heart. The artisans along this trail take great pride in preserving the traditional arts of the region including quilting, spinning, soap making, weaving, wood carving and chair canning. Through their hands, jams, jellies and sauces are a favorite at County Fairs and local arts festivals. This trail is fun, lively and attractive to active families or those who just want to sit in a rocker on a front porch. For more information, visit https://www.myswva.org/rtm/trails-and-map/mountain-crossroads.

The Crooked Road: Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail

Southwest Virginia

Trails

Winding through almost 300 miles of beautiful mountain terrain, The Crooked Road honors Southwest Virginia’s rich music heritage at major and affiliated venues throughout the region. In the Wytheville area, there are two affiliated venues: Mountain Top Music every Saturday and Sunday from May-October at Big Walker Lookout and the Wytheville Community College Bluegrass and Old-Time Jamboree held the third Saturday of most months on the college campus.
