Simmerman, South 4th Street 275 S. 4th Street (no longer stands). This house incorporated an earlier dwelling, possibly antebellum in date, that was formerly owned by William Hayes and possibly W. Stewart. Colonel S. S. Simmerman remodeled the house in 1913, adding a new front section to the original house. Simmerman represented Wythe County in the legislature. At E LIBERTY ST mid-century, the house was used as a hospital, and in the 1960s, it housed the Wytheville Community College. It held county offices until it was razed for the courthouse addition. R

Photo of Allen trial jury One of the most interesting trials to every occur in this structure was the result of a tragic event which occurred in the courthouse of a neighboring community. From April to December 1912, the Wythe County Courthouse was the E LIBERTY ST location of trials related to the infamous Carroll County Courthouse Massacre that occurred on March 14, 1912. Six men were tried for the crimes that resulted in five deaths and seven woundings received that day.

Wythe County Courthouse, 1902 225 S. 4th Street - Built in 1905, the Wythe County E MAIN ST Courthouse was designed by noted architect STATE POLICEand constructed by J. E. Parish Frank P.VAMilburn of Lynchburg. A quilt, made by a local group of GENEALOGY RESEARCH citizens and containing many scenes of the county, E SPRING ST is on display in the courthouse lobby. The water AFRICAN AMERICAN fountain on the Spring Street side of the building LOOP START was given by the Stuart Chapter DAR in 1915 in HERE honor of Colonel Thomas J. Boyd. It was designed for drinking by horse, man, and dog. N

370 W. Spring Street – Constructed around 1941, the END Carpenter Building is a commercial one-storyE MAIN masonry W MAIN ST E MAIN ST ST building with a bowstring truss roof. It originally served END as an automobile storage area for the then-nearby SACRED E. MAIN ST. END PLACES START A 1942 side addition was Crowgey Motor LOOP Company. LOOP HERE START used to warehouse auto parts. In 1946, it was acquired HERE E SPRING ST by Albert B. Carpenter END and repurposed and upgraded to 911 POLICE be used as a hosiery mill, mostly producing men’s socks. FIRE, RESCUE After Carpenter’s death in 1960, the mill closed and 4TH ST CIVIC Jafree Shirt Factory leased the building for processing CENTER END and warehousing shirts. Later, the Bates Casket Company E FRANKLIN ST used the space as a warehouse and sales office.
