November 2013 Volume 5 Issue 2

Editorial

Welcome back to Hoop Scene. As we face into November we can certainly say that the season is well and truly up and running, and what a season it is turning out  to  be  already.  I  don’t  think  I  can  remember  a  more exciting beginning to a campaign for quite a long time. Our girls teams are blazing a real trail so far and congratulations go out to our U16A team again this month on their great win in the Cork County Board U16 tournament.  That’s  trophy  number  two  for  this  very  talented  group  of  young   players. More on this win inside the magazine. We are delighted to announce a new range of club leisure wear which might come in handy as popular Christmas gifts next month. Details of the selection of club gear and how to get them can be found on page 6 of this months edition. November is National Cup month as our teams take on the cream of the clubs around  the  country.  It’s  been  a  mixed  bag  for  us  as  our  U18  Boys  and  Premier   Ladies both advance to the Quarter Finals after fantastic displays in their opening rounds but unfortunately our U20 Boys and Girls both bowed out in the opening round but they certainly flew the Mathew's flag with pride and honour. Our National League team have yet to play their first round game with fellow Cork side Blue Demons. There will be more extensive updates on all these games in the December edition. Many of our players are performing really well for their schools at the moment and  it  looks  like  being  a  very  exciting  season  on  that  front  also  for  Mathew’s   players. Finally, a huge congratulations must go out to five of our young girls who were instrumental  in  Cork  winning  the  BIPP’s  (U15  Schools)  tournament  in  Galway.   Well  done  Abbie  Jeffrey,  Aoife  Gibbons,  Niamh  Foley,  Jen  O’Regan  and  Kaylin   Hughes. Further congratulations are extend to Abbie, Aoife & Niamh for being picked on the Irish U16 Development Squad as a result of their fine performances in the above tournament. Well done girls. Enjoy the issue – enjoy the basketball.

Stars of the past & stars of the future Here’s a  blast  from  the  past.   Anyone recognise this chap on the left. He was a star with the North Mon in his playing days and even won a world title playing with them in London. He is a well known coach in the club so it should be relatively easy to narrow it down.
