And the Beat Goes On And the beat goes on - - - - To the everyday pace which fluctuates within all of us at W. H. S. Our school is composed of many hardworking and energetic people, who car e about making our school tops! It resembles a clock, ticking away to the every second of time. One obligation, one slight achievement, each contributes to the success of our school and ourselves. The beat of life continues from day to day, and we as individuals set its tempo. This school year as many preceding it, has had the pace of an active and competent student body. I wish to thank all who helped the COYOTE 69 become a reality and a special recognition to my staff; Jennie AndersonAssistant Editor, Photographers-Susan Ashmore, Rick Gordon, and Robin Wick and the Business Manager-Rick Wehmhoefer , who contributed much time and effort toward this year's production. Also I would like to express my sincere appreciation to our advisor-Mr. Arlo Beggs, Artist Studio, Merek's Studio, THE PLAINS REPORTER, the WILLISTON HERALD, and the COYOTE HOWL. I, as a senior, can look hack on my high school years and remember all of tne happy and sad memories which I expertenced , and treasure them through the _ years to come. One of my largest and most demanding activities has been that ..of being editor of the yearbook. Even though it was a great deal of work, I feel that it was well worth everything I put into it. Now, I can only hope, that you will feel the same, and value your COYOTE 69 as=_nmch as I. The Editor Cindy Hapip

Class Full of Spirit The class of "71" began its second year at W. H. S. , with spirit pouring out of all 342 of them. This year the Sophomores were more accustomed to the school since last year they were adjoined to the high school with the new addition. This year they were more involved and in eluded in the activities of the school. Class Officers: President, Sonja Nervig, Vice-President, Barb Cecil; Secretary, Stephanie Hornstein; Treasurer, Lori Cole.

The Sophomores were well represented in all phases -of sports, contributing much athletic success to various departments.

The Sophomore advisors were as follows: Mr. Benson (Chairman), Mr. Strand, Mr. Monson, Mr. Halmrast, Mrs. Ashmore, Mr. Meisel, Mr. Lloyd Larson, Mr. Reinhiller, Mr. Rice, Mr. Anderson, Mr. Spafford, Mr. Erdmann, Mr. Larry Larson. These teachers helped the Sophomore class greatly in their second year at W. H. S.

Class Council Members: BOTTOM ROW: Jackie Liffrig, Teri Olson, Terry McConnell, Stephanie Hornstein, Lori Cole, Barb Cecil, Susan Ullness, Larry Trowbridge. MIDDLE ROW: Marlys Anderson, Janette Stoner, Nikki Bushaw, Susan Hegge, Karla Urdahl, Nancy Johnson, Loretta Knutson, Jim Kaiser. TOP ROW: Warren Sundet, Darrell McKenzie, Mike Hagen, Mark Andre.

40

A new experience for them was Coyote Ca pers. The class had a very colorful and exciting production and enthusiastic cast.

Their theme for Capers was "Crisis at the Dam Site".

They sponsored their first dance, which was the "Sophomore Stag." The theme used for this year's stag was "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." This gave them some idea as to what work will be involved in next year's Junior-Senior Prom. The winning of the peg jug concluded a great year for the Sophomore class and showed that the class of "71" has the deter mination and spirit to be very successful in . their next two years at W. H. S.

Leading the junior class this year were: Sec. Sandye Slocum, Treas. Debby Fougner, Vice-President Sally Johnson, President Greg Cote.

Under the direction of Kim Ross and Steve Taylor, the junior class put forth a great group effort in making their homecoming float entry, "Brewin 'em to Ruin 'em" which took second place honors. Pictured to the RIGHT are Trudi Onstad and Greg Cote, hard at work on the float in the junior's great spirit of togetherness.

"Practice makes perfect, " was the motto of the juniors as they worked together on their play for the Coyote Caper's competition. After changing the script several times, the class finally decided on "Happiness is Hollywood" which Pat Laqua is chuckling over in the picture to the RIGHT.

64

Two typical enthusiastic juniors.

Now, now, girls!

Junior Class Council members were FRONT ROW, left to right: Jerry Le Dosque t, Doug Hagen. 2ND ROW: Pat Thome, Roger Syverson, Nancy Splichal, Randy Lee, Sheila Liffrig. 3RD ROW: Carolle Wells, Becky Erickson, Sharon Hanson. TOP ROW: Mike Hughes, Carolynne Jones, Jeanne Palmer, Dave Stenehjem.

Junior Class Has A Busy Year. Spring got into the swing and with it came the Senior Banquet and the Junior-Senior Prom. The theme for both of these events was "Gone With the Wind. " All Junior Class Council mem bers served for the southern colonial banquet which was under the direction of Debby Fougner and Alan Torvie. Karen Severtson and Doug Hagen were in charge of the Junior-Senior Prom which is an nually a junior class responsibility. Decorations for prom meant many long hours of work for the junior class. But the work was very worthwhile as was evident to everyone who at tended prom.

Steve Natwick as Dino in the W. H. S. production of the play.

Waiters at the Senior Banquet included L. TO R.: Ron Black, Mike Hughes, Tim Conlin, Dave Stenehjem, Cliff Wehrman, Jerry Le Dosque t, Lynn Borud.

66

Jim Stenehjem, an all-around student, will preside over the Student Council during the next school year. Taking a trip??

,.~ Some were happy and some were sad as W. H. S. closed its doors for the summer, but nevertheless the school year for 1968 - -1969 was over and the fun began.

When One Door Closes, Another Opens High school proves to be busy and exciting. When the class of '69 closed the doors to Junior High and opened the ones to WHS, little did it realize what was in store for it as it entered. Right away the class was faced with Homecoming, which meant a float for the sopho mores. This first attempt was a hugh tweedie bird entitled "Tweet 'em Rough". After participating in Capers for the first time, they found Sophomore Stag close at hand, and created the theme "Stardust" to find themselves in a heavenly surrounding.

"Key to the Throne" was the first try at Coyote Capers for the class of '69.

Confident now as Juniors that they were in the 'swing of things' , they tackled another float with a surfer trying to "Wipe 'em Out".

Would you believe Sophomores?????

Then it was another try at Capers when a touch of the Old West was relived in "Everything's Coming Up Roses". 86

Mike Watterson-behind the scenes in Capers 68.

Senior Class Council were L. TOR., BACK ROW: Rick Wehmhoefer, Darrel Daniels, Pete Nygaard, Bruce Kelsch, Jan Beauchrnan, Greg Anderson. MIDDLE ROW: Nancy Wallace, Terri Bachman, Shelly Jensen, Katie Hagan, Lori Borrud. FIRST ROW: Connie Kittleson, Debbie David, Brenda Satterfield, Linda Payton.

The class also presented its first class play entitled "Mother is a Freshman". State was a big event for many juniors that year also. Not only did our mighty team bring home the State champion ship, but the fans brought home the Golden Feather Trophy.

Two outstanding athletes for the class of 1 69 were Bruce Iverson and Jim Hughes.

Class officers for the year were President, Jan Be auchman, vice-President, Shelly Jensen; Secretary, Katie Hagan.

87

Two loyal Coyote football fans, Cheryl Bean and Randy Peterson. Here, the tables are turned, as Paul Arnson helps with make-up.

Next there was the Prom and banquet. After hours of hard labor and planning, the ju niors and seniors had a won derful evening dancing in "Brigadoon". Both were a great success. The beat goes on, and again the class of '69 started another year, its last one. It began with a victory with the Homecoming float which dis played a hugh skunk and was entitled "Skunk the Braves- That makes good sense". Working on the float, proved to be fun and tiring!

With open mouths, the members of the cast are trying their best.

88

Seniors are victorious Capers brought them another victory with "The Unquenchable Quest", when a mixed-up professor tried to make the ideal cup of coffee. The team made it to state again, but although they didn't get far, it was as fun as ever and everyone had a good time. During prom later that year, the seniors found themselves dancing on a southern plantation. The theme for Banquet and Prom was "Gone With the Wind". Campaigning was a big success for Elks Youth Day, and for many seniors it was a wonderful experience.

A typical door, full of campaign posters.

As Baccalaureate and Commencement came and were gone again, the class of '69 realized that now the doors of WHS were closing and many, many new doors were opening for them.

Then, it was time to get the caps and gowns.

Laughter and tears, hard work and fun, once here and then gone.

Twirp Week Turns the Tables This year, Twirp Week was held the week of November 17 to 23. It is an annual affair at W. H. S. when the girls ask out the boys, carry their books, and open doors for them, etc. The week was highlighted by a Twirp Dance which was held at the St. Joseph's Gym and proved to be fun for all who participated.

Tension Mounts as Coyote Capers Progresses Coyote Capers, 1969 was held February 1, 3, and 4. The annual event is sponsored by the Student Council and the advisor is Mr. Gary Nelson. All four classes contributed to the final production. The Freshmen were in charge of publicity, headed by Roger Ellingson and Tim Kingstad. The other three classes wrote their own plays complete with original scenery, music, and dance. Each final production was judged on originality, costumes, scenery, music, lighting, and showmanship. The winning class received the traveling trophy. The money from the productions was used to support our foreign exchange student, Beatrize Ruiz, from Osorno, Chile. Beatrize spoke at each of the performances about her home. Joe Mendro and Martha Innis were the Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, and were chosen by the Student Council Executive Board. After many happy and sad tears Coyote Capers was another great success. Our foreign exchange student from Chile is no longer foreign to WHS.

W.H.S. Vocalists The Williston High School choir is com posed of 79 members. This year proved to be a very interesting one for the_ choir when two of their out of town en gagements were consecutively cancelled. One was a trip to Regina Saskatche wan, where they were to present a joint concert with the Regina Lions A -Band. The other trip, to Genora, was delayed because of weather conditions. But on March 10th this concert was given and greatly appreciated by the students of Genora. The spring concert was held on March 20th followed by a trip to Minot for the District Choir Festival, con eluding a very successful year for the choir.

Mr. Don Larson, Choir Director.

Cheerleaders Inspire Spirit Explosion The varsity cheerleaders for 1968-69 were Patty Andre, Peggy Andre, Debbie David, Laurie Huss, and Debbie Skurdal. They were chosen in March of 1968 for the coming school year. They at tended a cheering camp in August where they competed with 300 other girls from several different states. They proudly brought back a second place trophy, and also many new ideas for boosting school spirit. This year they were kept busy working on signs, planning pep assemblies, practicing, and cheering for football, basketball, and wrestling.

"Coyotes Reigned Over Regionals" With the enthusiastic help of the A- squad cheerleaders and spirited Pep Club, the Coyotes had another victorious year. They are tops in the Northwest region again, a title which has now been held for two years by the Coyotes. They began their reign over regionals when they triumphed over the Rugby Panthers by a score of .80 to 53. By a score of 74 to 67 they defeated Bottineau which was rated one of the top teams in the state. The final game, which made the

Coyotes victorious, was against the undefeated Minot Magi's. The Coyotes displayed their ability by scoring a total of 72 points while the Magi's trailed by 4 with a score of 68. After long hours of hard practice and much physical endurance the Coyotes traveled to state with a record of 18 wins and 7 losses. Although our team didn't place Number 1 in the state, they are still Number 1 at Williston High School!

"YEARLINGS" The Yearlings had a very good season winning 12 and losing 5 out of the 17 games which they played. Under the direction of Coach Clyde Sailor the Yearlings learned that teamwork paid off. Hard work is often rewarding and something to take pride in, if it is continued to the end, as this team has done. Here's hoping that the Yearlings will keep doing the great job that they have done so that we can look forward to seeing a great deal of good basketball played by these young stars in the future.

Coyote Wrestlers Lose Weight - Gain Fortitude The 1968--1969 Coyote Wrestling team of Williston High School had many outstanding wrestlers who proved that they were some of Williston's top athletes. To mention a few--Brad Jacobsen, Paul Price, Paul Arnson, Dan Schwartz. Some of the Coyote's future stars- -Bil ly Knutson, Carrol Hegge and Wally Hapip. The Coyotes made it happen this year by sending Dan Schwartz to the State Tournaments after he took 2nd place at the Regionals. The Coyotes suffered one serious setback- -when Paul Arnson, a top contender in his weight class, was injured. Under the direction of Coach Merle Halmrast, the Coyotes had an invigorating and exciting season.

They have set a good example in showing what kind of team evolves when there is great school spirit.
