NOT INTO FISHING? STAND UP AND PADDLE! Stand-up paddle, a.k.a. SUP, is one of the newest and fastest-growing watersports. It requires no experience, but it can be physically challenging because it uses the body’s core to “surf.” The SUP is a large surfboard-like board that you stand on, and you use a paddle to propel it. The sport, which is believed to have been born in ancient times, was popular in Hawaii years ago and has been revived in recent years. Lee Murray, owner of Lee’s SUP located near the Jerisich Dock downtown, says stand-up paddleboarding is a very easy sport. “Gig Harbor is a great place for it,” he says. He rents SUPs at $25 for two hours, and surfers can launch them straight into the water from his location. The shop is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Thursday from May 1 to mid-September, and on the weekends during the winter season. On Saturdays when the wind, tide and weather are generally good, paddlers can drop by the business at 9:30 a.m. and join in with an adventure-paddling group that explores together.
