Now you can have your cake and eat it!

As Patisserie Valerie hits the high street, we chat to CEO Paul May Tell us about the history of Patisserie Valerie. Est. 1926

Patisserie Valerie was established by 1926 by Belgian born Madam Valerie who soon after arriving in London tasked herself with introducing exquisite continental pastries to the English. The original shop continues today in Soho`s Old Compton Street having seen little change, except for the opening of a Tea Room on the first floor.

Why have you chosen Liverpool to open a branch?

Patisserie Valerie has arrived in Liverpool, come and see us at Patiserie Valerie the Met Quarter

Our expansion across the UK has been extremely well received and successful recent openings in historic cities such as York, Leeds and Manchester - where the popularity of “Coffee Culture” continues to grow, have astonished others in the industry. We know that Liverpool has been transformed out of all recognition in the last 20 years and fits the bill perfectly.

Tell us about your special occasion cakes. Our speciality and celebration cakes have proved extremely popular and unique to what is readily available in the High Street, they have been created to offer an occasional and affordable indulgence regardless of the occasion. Our range of Speciality Cakes and Gateaux are all hand made daily using the finest Belgian Chocolate and fresh exotic fruits that never fail to impress and taste as good as they look.

What service do you offer?

Would you agree that you are thr “Harrods” of cake shops? Are we the “Harrods” of the cake world? A comparison we have never made before but there are a number of similarities in that both have become destinations, are associated with quality and are both orginally London Institutions. In our case however, no longer do you have to visit London, we are coming to a place near you!

What is your most popular treat?

Most populat treat at the moment is our Goitto Gateaux slice, Light Mascarpone Cream layered with smooth dark belgian chocolate mouse.

You are an expanding business in the middle of a recession, what is the reason behind your success? We keep being told that shopping is in decline and that retailers are struggling to find enough customers. This is not our experience however. In times of recession, people need an affordable treat to cheer themselves up – and when things are going well, they want to celebrate. We provide a dazzling array of pure indulgence in the form of our delicious cake range, but we do not neglect the basics of breakfasts, lunches etc matched with quick and excellent service.

For more details visit Patisserie Valerie in The Metquarter, Liverpool

All our stores open early mornings through to early evenings and serve breakfsat, lunch and afternoon teas throughout the day where a selection of our pastries and cakes is always available along with premium loose leaf teas and “Madam Valerie`s” Cream teas!. ( scones, clotted cream and preserves.

You have a celebrity following and have featured on a documentary on food channels - what is the secret of your success? Over the years Patisserie Valerie has attracted a loyal celebrity following. The original store in Bohemian Soho, being in the heart of London`s theatre land proved an extremely popluar “Rendezvous” for actors, actresses , writers and associates within the entertainment industry who would often meet between performances and regularly order cakes for celebrations.

9 Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us! Yes we are three years old this month! Amazing. Launching a magazine at the start of the credit crunch was always a daunting prospect but we remain strong despite having consistently printed an issue every month since conception, proving us to be the most successful and longest magazine for the region.

We’re a third of the way through 2011. At the risk of sounding cliched, where does the time go? Maybe it is because we are having such fun working! We have had a wonderful time already, with our party at All Bar One last month and of course our Wirral Fashion Festival. All the pictures are inside here for you. It may be the royal wedding this month but we’ve so many events, would we have been able to fit in a royal invite as well? Ha ha.

The midfielder announced the opening of the Bone and Joint Centre, which will form an extension to the private Spire Liverpool Hospital, Mossley Hill. Jamie was presented with a cheque donation of £3,000 to his 23 Foundation charity by Mr Peter Brownson, a nationally recognised expert in arthroscopic shoulder surgery and upper limb surgeon for Liverpool Football Club. Mr Brownson treated the footballer at the Bone and Joint Centre after he dislocated his shoulder during a match in November, enabling him to return to the game last month, three-and-a-half weeks ahead of schedule. He said: “I hate sitting on the side lines and thanks to the excellent care of Mr Brownson and his team I was able to get back into playing earlier than expected, for which I’m really thankful. The same goes for anybody in any profession, being out of action is just inconvenient. The £200,000 clinic will feature state-of-the-art equipment including a premier mobile MRI scanning service and comprehensive diagnostic facilities. The unique clinic will now have the capacity to treat up to 100 patients each week in its three consulting rooms and services include a sports injury clinic specialising in musculo-skeletal conditions. Mr Brownson said: “At the Bone and Joint Centre, patients have peace of mind from knowing they are being looked after by a team of leading orthopaedic consultants.

Lifestyle Monthly is delighted to introduce our exclusive interview with high street giant, George Davies, the man behind George clothing of Asda, he also revamped NEXT and launched Per Una for M&S.

"It's so exciting to be in Liverpool, somewhere full of culture and history but also full of people who are as passionate about it as their home city. The restaurant's part of what's really new and thriving, the stunning Liverpool One complex" Jamie Oliver

Join us for Prosecco and pastries from 9am on 7th, 8th and 9th April to kick start your day at the races or reserve a table for 6 or more at for dinner. For groups of less than 6 just come along and enjoy authentic Italian at great value, Jamie Oliver style.

How important is Liverpool as a city to you? Do you regard it as home? Liverpool has always been very important in my life and yes, I do regard it as home What do you think about the rejuvination of the city? I think it was long overdue but a great move Last year the Daily Mirror compared London Fashion Week to Liverpool Fashion Week and said we were better. Do you agree? I do agree with the Daily Mirror yes. Liverpool fashion week is a great force for street fashion When you first started off in Littlewoods did you ever imagine you would become a household name in fashion and retail? No, but Littlewoods gave me fantastic training. Without the knitwear and design courses they provided, along with the store side support they gave me I would have achieved nothing. What does it feel like being a household name? Well there are two things - Firstly, I don’t think about it because I am so busy and always try to focus on new things and secondly, I always try to focus on the future. Where did you get your ideas for Per Una? Italy has always been a country that has had a big influence on me and I have always had a studio there. I understand the textile trade of Italy - it’s full of innovation and I love it. What is your proudest achievement to date? I see pride as a sin and I don’t look back, I look forward. I would of course say that my seven children were huge achievements. Would you consider getting involved Liverpool Fashion Week, which we organise? Yes

John Lewis Liverpool ONE

I think every woman reading this must think “What a fortunate wife you have, having a husband who loves retail!”What do you say to that? I think all 3 wives have been very fortunate (joke!)

Opening Times

Do you wear your own brands? I wear George underwear and socks. As far as Per Una goes I haven’t started cross dressing yet!

Tel: 01515 599 830 Fax: 01512 680 079

Apple Store Liverpool ONE ST S JOHN

45 Paradise Street Liverpool 1, Liverpool L1 3DN

What drives you? I am still motivated and still get a fantastic buzz out of doing new things. Next week I launch a kidswear brand called FG4 in over 140 stores in the Middle East and I have had to study the customer in depth – you can’t just do what you do in the UK – you have to get the knowledge and see what opportunities there are to test yourself with – I am constantly sitting my own examination.

Do you think taking risks in business is key to success? If you are in the fashion business you obviously have to take risks, particularly in womenswear as fashion changes so quickly – the art is to de-risk this. This is very important to me and I think the reason I feel comfortable in Italy is because they have the same values. Three of my daughters work for me and who knows what will happen to the other children who are just finishing their education.

What do you think when you look in M&S and Next these days? Although I have sold Next, George and Per Una, I am still passionately interested in them – they are like my family. I want my brands to carry on doing well. You have 7 children (I have 5) - how important is family to you? My children are my proudest achievements What advice would you give to someone starting their own business now? It’s not just now – one of the most important things when you start a business is the amount of research you do yourself. It’s all about having something unique. You will always have competitors and you have to study your competitors and see how they do it. If you come up with an answer that you are confident with and feel is better for your customer then it gives you the confidence to go forward. Tell us about your private jet. is it really the fastest in the world? In my industry sadly there is little manufacturing left in the UK – I have always seen my clothing and garments and manufacturing partners. I spend 50% of my life travelling all over the world and the only way for me to have the ability to visit these people regularly is by the use of private aircraft. For 20 years I have used this and the far flung places I go to – at the end of last year I did over 160000 miles going within Turkey, Saudi, Dubai, Delhi, India, Shangai and then China flying me back to Turkey and then UK – the aircraft I use is a Citation 10? now that Concorde is no longer around and can achieve 0.9 mach?. You do a lot for charity- how important is this to you? My own belief is that if you are lucky enough to have business success in life financially I believe it is important to give back – I have concentrated my charity on education in the UK, Tanzaniar and Shri Lanka. I have also supported the vascular society for over 10 years in their research because it’s a bigger killer than cancer. It is not just about money but also giving – I have a very hands on attitude to the causes/charities just as I do in business. You are one of the most influential people according to Drapers Record - how do you react to this? I didn’t know about it – thank you very much What can you never leave home without? My blackberry Is there a typical day in your working life? If so, describe it No – everyday has a different set of challengers and I have a great variety – I really enjoy it. Do you have any regrets over any decisions you have made? Just like anyone else, I am fallible but when I make mistakes the most important thing is to learn from them – never make the same mistake twice.

Welcome Grand National 2011 Liverpool Day racegoers to be entertained by The Farm Racegoers will be treated to the cream of city culture at this year’s John Smith Grand National Festival Liverpool Day. A programme of top class entertainment on the opening day of the world famous race meeting will be headlined by legendary Mersey band The Farm. The group, which topped the charts with the ever-popular ‘All Together Now’ and ‘Groovy Train’ will perform for 45 minutes after the day’s racing. Other bands lined up to play on Liverpool Day include; bands from the Mersey Cats; Paul Kappa and his band; Alternative Radio; and a number of new artists from the Threshold Festival. Liverpool Day on Thursday 7 April is the first day in the three-day extravaganza, celebrating all that is fabulous about one of the world’s most colourful cities. Liverpoolinspired music, comedy, entertainment and sport will all be on offer, with the BGC Liverpool Hurdle opening the meeting. Emma Owen, Marketing and PR Manager at Aintree Racecourse, said: “This will be a great party for Liverpool; a city which is famous for its fashion, culture and sport and it’s fantastic we’ve managed to secure The Farm who will no doubt be the icing on the cake in our Liverpool Day celebrations.” Following on from the success of the first Liverpool Day last year, which saw a five per cent boost in attendance, racecourse staff are expecting more visitors than ever before.

Also performing on the day will be Kappa, Alternative Radio’s Rob and Alan Fennah, Mersey Cats and a number of bands from the Threshold Festival (www. As well as non-stop performances on stage in the Equestrian Centre, lots of other attractions around the course will keep the crowds entertained throughout the day and evening. The following day, Friday, is Ladies Day, when fashionistas will flock to Aintree from around the country, to vie for one of the huge prizes on offer in the style contest. Finally, on Saturday 9 April, 40 of the world’s most talented horsemen and women will gather to compete in the biggest social event in the sporting calendar – the John Smith’s Grand National itself. Watched by 600 million people worldwide, the Grand National is the most high profile event on the horseracing calendar. This year the race itself will be worth a record £950,000 in prize money, the richest jump race in Europe. Aintree Racecourse MD Julian Thick has revealed an astonishing increase in ticket sales to date for this year’s John Smith’s Grand National. Compared with this time last year, sales are up by 20 per cent for Grand National Day. Mr Thick attributes the surprise jump in sales to the ‘AP McCoy’ effect – and a stubborn refusal by racegoers to forgo the Grand National even as they tighten their belts elsewhere.

The jump in ticket sales is going to have a major economic impact. This news has been welcomed by David Andrews, Director of Visitor Economy for TMP - Official Tourist Board for Liverpool City Region. He added: “The John Smith’s Grand National is a major highlight in not only the UK’s sporting calendar, but it is watched live by millions worldwide. The John Smith’s Grand National is a key component of the City Region’s programme of world class major events and I’m delighted to see advance bookings performing so well. Major events are a significant contributor to the performance of the City Region’s Visitor Economy, and will continue to play a critical role in helping grow the sector from its current value of £2.8billion, supporting over 40,000 jobs. “Such an increase in advance ticket sales is an extremely positive sign for another record year. Last year over 150,000 people visited Aintree over the three days, with at least 57,000 of those people travelling from outside Liverpool City Region. The 2010 race meeting generated a staggering £8.5million in visitor spend, of which £6.1million was spent on hotels and in bars and restaurants. “This event gives us another great opportunity to promote the Liverpool City Region as an exciting, welcoming, must-do destination, and we look forward to giving our Grand National visitors the best possible visitor experience.”

This year’s three-day extravaganza kicks off on Thursday, April 7 with the second Liverpool Day, which celebrates all that is fabulous about one of the world’s most colourful cities. Liverpool-inspired music, comedy, entertainment and sport will all be on offer, with the BGC Liverpool Hurdle opening the meeting. Grand National Week wouldn’t be complete without its very glamorous female racegoers, and Friday, April 8, will see women from across the country dress to impress at the legendary Ladies’ Day. A rainbow of colours is expected as stylistas display their most stunning outfits in a bid to scoop one of the huge prizes on offer in the style contest. Finally, on Saturday 9 April, 40 of the world’s most talented horsemen and women will gather to compete in the biggest social event in the sporting calendar – the John Smith’s Grand National. Watched by 600 million people worldwide, the Grand National is the most high profile event on the horseracing calendar. This year the race itself will be worth a record £950,000 in prize money. As a new BBC daytime drama gets underway, we chat to its lead character, Liverpool actor,

Jake Abrahams

BBC Drama

A new BBC One Daytime drama, Justice, starts on April 7th Filmed in Liverpool with an all star cast including Gillian Kearney (Casualty, Shameless) and Jake Abraham (Holby City, Lock Stock), this compelling series is set to be a daytime hit. The drama follows the story of a fictional local community justice centre and its mysterious judge, Patrick Coburn (Robert Pugh), seen by the community as either a liberal lefty or a power-crazed despot. Established prosecutor Joe Gateacre (Gary Mavers) is his right-hand man. With his connections and tough reputation, he is instrumental in getting the local community to trust the Judge. A bright, local reporter, is keen to make a name for herself and uncover the truth behind the Judge’s secret past Each episode of the five-part drama follows a changing line-up of guest stories at the centre, tackling issues from kerb crawling to shoplifting. But the Judge and his revolutionary centre are also under threat from within. The judicial establishment see the centre as a money drain and want their power back – will the Judge and his team be able to keep 18 the wolves at bay?

Lifestyle Monthly chatted to actor Jake Abraham, who plays a career criminal. Liverpudlian Jake said, “It’s great to be home and working in my home town. It’s so nice to go home of a night after work. I am proud to be working in Liverpool, seeing all the local people and this drama brings so much to the region, it has been well researched and it’s so nice to see drama being produced locally. “The UK has produced some great films, we used to export so miuch but now all the budgets have been drawn back. Some peole are happy to go back to cheap drama but Justice isn’t that. It’s high quality, brilliant scripts that will keep you on the edge of your seats. It’s just amazing, you’ll see how one man can destroy an area through dodgy dealings.” Jake is still recognized for his role in Lock Stock and is still friends with fellow actor, Vinnie Jones. Jake said, “Vinnie is a really lovely guy, Lock Stock was a low budget film, we never thought it would turn out to be such an iconic classic movie. It was brilliant to be part of it.”

From his studio on Victoria Street, MAKEUP SFX, is making body parts for BBC One’s forensic crime series, The Body Farm, which is set to rival Silent Witness. The new series starts Tara Fitzgerald as a forensic pathologist who leads a brilliant and ambitious team of scientists at a private facility where human remains are donated for scientific purposes. They are called upon by police forces all over the world to provide expert knowledge to help solve crimes….

How did you get into this line of work? I was working for Mersey Television on Brookside. They never had a proper prosthetics department and I fell into it by accident. The script called for a dog to be run over and I had to make a dog, so I built one out of teddy bears. Then they needed a premature baby and so I resculpted the dog, used some gelatine and made a baby. Everyone said how real it looked and it got me hooked on this. I thought I was so bad at it and wanted to make it a lot better. So I self taught myself. When did it become a new career for you? My wife was a make up artist on Brookside as well and we talked about it for months before I decided to do it full time. I was 29 years old and had to tell my dad, who’s a lorry driver, that I was going into make up. That Christmas he didn’t know whether to buy me a football or a handbag! What was your first big break? I got jobs through word of mouth really. Christopher Eccleston was in a drama playing a teacher and I got the job as Makeup Designer. One thing led to another. “Cops” was a gritty police drama and again I was hired as Makeup and Prosthetics Designer including making a corpse for an episode. For ten years, l worked on locally based dramas such as Queer As Folk, and because Russell T Davies wrote it and went onto write Doctor Who, he asked me to be the Makeup and Prosthetics Designer for the new Dr Who series starring Christopher Eccleston which Lin Davie and I won a BAFTA for in 2005. You have worked in Hollywood, with Wes Snipes on Blade and Pirates of the Caribbean. What was that like? It was crazy. I just got the phone call and thought my mates were winding me up. Pirates was amazing, the budgets were just ridiculous, everything you ever needed on a job, and 24 hour catering. It was a far cry from Huyton! I think I got the job because it was just after 9/11 and the Americans couldn’t fly, so they got British artists to fly over.

You run a prosthetics make up course. Why did you set it up? To teach people hands on. You can go to college and listen to a lecturer who has never done what he says he has. Here you are learning about drama production and I ensure all my students get work experience on the sets. It gives them access to do all kinds of make up and stuff in the future. And recently you worked with James Nesbitt on the current ITV! Series Yes, I had to replicate what brain operations would look like under the microscope. I actually had a brain surgeon say it looked real which was a great endorsement. Tell us about Body Parts. This is a high budget BBC drama which is taking 5 months to make the prosthetics. A full scale body can cost £12,500, plus you have to factor in the four or five people required to paint it.

Rick Vaughn ON WHAT’S HOT & NOT for april

HOT Grand National

This is possibly Liverpool’s number 1 annual landmark event. Whether you’re going Thursday, Friday or Saturday, you can’t help but get involved along the way. My favourite day out of the three, as you probably would have guessed, is Ladies Day, if only for the amount of girls leaving the racecourse holding their high heels in their hands.

Peter Kay

He’s back and not before time, I love this guy to death. I remember seeing him under the big top of summer pops and for my money he’s still the best comedian out there and that’s proved by the fact you can’t get tickets to see him for love nor money.

One Card Liverpool

Bank Holiday Weekend It’s here already! The first big one of the year and it’s a real sense that we’re finally moving out of winter and, fingers crossed, getting some sunny, spring days. I guess it also helps that the majority of us will have four days off work which is always a bonus…. unlike me... but I still love it.

Royal Wedding Don’t get me wrong I love the Royal family, but for 98% of us I think the reason we’ll love this day more than any other is because most of us will be off work. As to whether it will pull the viewing figures Charles and Diana did... I highly doubt it.

X-Factor Well I love the X-Factor but it’s no longer about a month-long TV show we all used to watch, it’s now become a 52 week a year gossiping machine! I tip my hat to Mr Cowell and the PR guys there as they do know how to spin a story, but give us some time off please before it takes over my Saturday nights again.

I agree totally that the old fake bake is better than the odd sunbed , but when you see certain girls out and about looking like a ‘Wotsit’ … then I draw the line. Like most things, little and often is better and everything in moderation I think … we all know someone who should bear this in mind as they start layering the stuff on to go the races this year!

So spring is finally in the air, and April is set to be another hectic month for me as I celebrate not only one but two birthday’s.... It’s my birthday at the start of this month, but more importantly this column you are now reading is two years old too. and the magazine is three years old! It’s very rare I look back, but having just done so through the archives and reading my very first column from April 2009, skinny jeans, Starbucks and slimming were top of the ‘NOT’ list, I guess some things never change, no matter how hard you try. Maybe thats not a bad thing? Now, I’ve just come back from Dubai, and I have to say what a place it is. I mentioned it last month that I had never been there before, and now I fail to see what took me so long to get there. The place really does hit the high notes, and if you love the sunshine then it’s a must visit. Meanwhile, back here I’m continuing to train hard this month with trainer Gilgeous from body zone training. I have to be honest with you though; there are days when I am sat there holding my tin of weight watchers spaghetti and thinking to myself there has got to be more to life than this? On a lighter note as I mentioned in my hot section - it’s another great month for dates in the diary. We’ve

got the Grand National, a bank holiday weekend and the likes of Peter Kay all coming to town. As for myself, Saturday nights at Envy with Radio City Live gets stronger and stronger and on ladies day night I’ll be popping along to Ruby Sky in concert square to join in their post race celebrations. Talking of nights out, a couple of months ago I began doing some gigs at Chester’s Double Tree Hilton. February saw me appear with Michael Buble, March I was with Michael Jackson and this month, Easter Thursday the 21st I’ll be with Robbie Williams...all tributes of course and the best bit is, there’s no excuses for this month’s event because we are all off work on Good Friday. Other things that I’m looking forward to this month include catching the brilliant Claire Sweeney as she hit’s the Empire theatre, and I’m off to Manchester to see David Guetta perform live. So, as you can see all in all it’s another fun packed month where I hope to bump into you out and about. Right, that will do it for this month’s two year anniversary column but I’ll be back next month chatting more Bank Holiday Weekends, Duran Duran and we are another month closer to Radio City Live at the Echo Arena ... can’t wait! Until then stay safe and make sure you catch me on Radio City, week days from 10am

As a wedding anniversary celebration for my mother and father in law, we all booked into the stunning Ramada Plaza Hotel which is part of the waterfront development on Southport’s promenade, just a half an hour’s drive from North Liverpool This luxury hotel opened in November 2008 and boasts 133 chic rooms all with lavishly designed interiors, offering city centre style by the seaside. The hotel includes a relaxing lounge, bar and the Marine Brasserie for stylish dining overlooking the stunning marina. The Ramada Plaza is ideally located close to Lord Street, famous for its array of shops and boutiques and has a whole host of golf courses situated nearby. Some of the best golf courses in the world are located in Southport, which are all within half an hour of the hotel. From the moment on arrival, the staff were polite, welcoming and very helpful, showing us to the underground free car park and taking our luggage. The hotel is outstanding, and once we opened the door to the bedroom, we were delighted with a wonderful view overlooking the marina lake. The room was spotless, light ,bright and spacious, with a comfortable bed with crisp, clean bedding. We headed down for our evening meal at the hotells Marine Brasserie which boasts a cosy ambiance, the staff were so courteous and attentitive. The restaurant was very busy, demonstrating a popular choice to dine. There was a choice of starters from an extensive but simple menu -we opted for homemade tomato soup with fresh crispy roll and pate with melba toast, which were both delicious. For mains, we both had Roast Rack of Lamb, dauphinoise, minted peas & broad beans. The meat was cooked to perfection. We could not resist the jam roly poly with custard cream and a french glazed tart with ice cream to finish off the perfect meal.

The food was outstanding and we would highly recommend to anyone, we would definatley be back even as a non-resident. There was also an impressive wine list to choose from, and we left the restaurant extremly content and headed to the entertainment, we did not even have to venture outside as Southport theatre situated next door had an evening of Rat pack, to our delight. The live entertainment was fantastic, we sang and danced to our hearts content and had an absolute ball. We headed exhausted and still contented back to our beautiful room and had the best sleep. When we awoke the next morning we tackled the breakfast which had the greatest variety of foods we had ever seen, opting for a traditional cooked breakfast, whilst enjoying the breathtaking views. The Ramada Plaza should be very proud of the service they offer and how very welcome and special the staff made us feel. We have told everyone about the whole experience and hope not to have to wait until our next wedding anniversary to come back. We both agee that 10 out 10 is the very least the Ramada Plaza deserves.

Tania Simpson,(right of picture) Retail Operations Manager from Burleydam Garden Centre took great pleasure in handing over a cheque for an impressive £5000.00, to Amy and her Mum Jayne (left of picture) from Amy and Friends Charity. Amy and Friends is a local Charity that supports families whose children suffer from a premature aging disorder and the problems that this causes. Jayne and her daughter Amy appeared in a recent BBC1 programme ‘saints and scroungers’, and as ‘saints’ drew more awareness to this dreadful genetic disorder. On February 28th Jayne was invited to speak at The House of Commons as it was Rare

Disease Awareness Day across the world, Jayne represented the charity and families throughout the UK. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Cockayne Syndrome – CS is a premature ageing disorder that leads to a shortened life expectancy. There are varying degrees of this syndrome and there are types I, II and III. We have been lucky enough to have met about 100 children/adults suffering from this. Each child has a look of one another regardless of the type and each one has a loving, happy nature. Amy and her friends reach out to your heart, capture it and you will never forget that you have met them and they you. You can find more information under

The Wirral Fashion Festival, organised by Lifestyle Monthly magazine, was attended by 200 people last month. There were catwalk shows from M&Co, New Look, Citrine, Mooch, Amber's Closet, Caroline Oates, John Lewis and Opulence Bridal, live music from Annie Bond, Kit Williams and a Take That tribute band. An amazing night was had by all.

Oscar Winning Golden Glamazon Guide From the catwalk to the red carpet, we’ve all seen the looks but without a live in make- up artist, how do you get the look at home for that special occasion and achieve that polished, flawless look just like all the celebrities? One key look that has been sported and is always a classic is the bronzed, golden smoke and with a few steps is easily achieved and I’ve used Urban Decay’s NAKED palette for this look. Radiant, luminous skin works well with this look, so choose a medium coverage foundation that’s water-based to achieve that dewy finish and shy away from matt finishes for a more luminous look.

1) Prep the skin with primer, then mix an illuminiser with your foundation and apply as normal

7) Apply a full set of lashes to the top lash line using the line created by the liner and finish with mascara.

2) lightly apply translucent powder all over the face and at this point apply lip balm to the lips

8) Apply a gold pigment to the cupid’s bow of the lip then line the lips with liner, then using a brush apply a vibrant red lipstick ( I’ve used MUA’s shade 13 as it’s got a slightly orange undertone which is great with blue eyes)

3) Prep the eyelid with primer then apply ‘virgin’ all over the lid right up to the brow. Using a damp medium brush apply ‘half baked’ to the entire lid. Wetting the brush will minimise fallout and intensify the gold. 4) Using a smaller brush apply ‘smog’ along the socket line, intensifying in the outer corner of the eye and along the lash line, then blend ensuring no hard lines. 5) Using a white pencil apply to the inner eye rim and the inner corner of the eye, then using a fine brush apply a fine line of ‘toasted’ to the lower lash line. 6) Then using gel liner with an angled brush apply above the eyelid, extending the line out from the edge of the lid, thickening out towards the outer socket.

And there you go, a straightforward how-to plan on achieving the celebrity look. This look can be easily intensified by changing the colours, but remember the darker the eye the lighter the lip. Stay In Style Flowers are everywhere this season, everything from printed fabrics, to flower head bands, to jewellery and accessories have flowers on them. I especially love this flower necklace from Accessorize. It’s £18 and worth every penny.

How To make... A Charm Bracelet Equipment 1 7” silver tone curb chain 1 3” extension chain 1 7” silver tone cross chain with attached charms 7 4” jump rings 1 pair of round nosed jewellery making pliers 1 pair of cutting pliers 1 large, silver tone owl charm 1 large, sparkly, silver tone ball charm 1 large, silver tone flower charm 1 large silver tone bead 1 large, silver tone, heart charm 4 head pins 4 1/2” purple glass beads 1 lobster clasp Step one Take the silver tone curb chain and (using the pliers and jump rings) attach the charms to it. The charms should be approximately 5 links apart, the large heart charm may take up a little more space so judge accordingly. Step two Now, take the head pins and purple beads. Slide the head pins through the holes in the beads (one head pin per bead). You now need the pliers, use them to

make a loop at the long end of the head pin, cut off the excess (using the cutting pliers) and don’t close the loop all the way over just yet. Each bead needs to go in between each charm on your bracelet, to do this you need to slip the loop you have just made on to the curb chain, then close the loop using the round nosed pliers. Step three Attach a jump ring on to either end of the curb chain. Before you close the jump rings over, slide the lobster clasp on to one jump ring and the extension chain on to the other. Also, slide the cross chain (with attached charms), just so it’s in line with the curb chain. You can now close the jump rings over.

Heather says, “I’m so happy to be back writing songs and gigging. There was a point in my career where I felt I had to choose between acting and music and at the time the acting route felt right. Having been offered a record deal with Simon Cowell’s record label, she walked away to ensure she remained in control of her music. She says, “I didn’t like the ideas that record labels had for me and I wasn’t really ready to show myself completely. Back in those days he was signing all actors from the likes of London’s Burning, Robson and Jerome etc and I just wasn’t comfortable doing covers of someone else’s work.” The title of the current album is ‘This Is Me’ because for the first time I feel confident about the place that my songs are coming from. I can’t wait to share that with everyone on tour and to try out some new songs too.” She added, “Music saw me through drama shool, it rescued me and paid the bills when the acrting work wasn’t there. I came from a musical background and almost fell into acting, but music was always there. I have been rehearsing for hours every day, it’s been a full time job to get me to the standard I need to be at to go on tour. It’s going to be good gig, I hope.” For details contact / 08444 771 000 or visit

Christakis Greek Taverna is celebrating its 11th birthday this year but in fact the restaurant has been around much longer. The original restaurant was called Renos and owned by Christakis’ parents-in-law since the ‘80s. Greek Cypriot Christakis is proud of his heritage and firmly passes on this to his loyal customers who love his eating traditional greek food. Working alongside his three sons, the restaurant in York Street, Liverpool One, prides itself on family atmosphere, unrivalled friendly service and high quality food. Chris says, “It is very important to go to the best butchers in Liverpool, to buy the best cuts of meat, whether it be pork, lamb, chicken or steak, because it has to taste perfect. Quality is so important.” All the dishes, which include traditional dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), kebabs and the most popular dish on the menu, lamb kleftico which just falls off the bone and melts in the mouth are cooked by authentic Greek chefs The dishes are packed with large portions of side orders- rice, salad, and pitta bread imported from Cyprus accompanies all main courses. Fine Greek wines accompany the dishes, should you choose, or there’s a fully stocked bar of cocktails, beers and Christakis is famed for its party nights, hen nights are a speciality, where the hen also eats free. There’s greek dancing, belly dancing, plate smashing and a dj till 2 am on Thursdays & Saturdays... to be honest you are hard pressed to find a more authentic Greek Cypriot restaurant anywhere in the North West. The food tastes divine, it’s like being on holiday in the best restaurant on the island, and the service is spectacular.

Diary Fitness of the editor with her personal trainer

...Kane’s words echo in my ears as I drive to Elite Fitness. I do want to do it. The sessions are hard, there’s no doubt about it but I feel amazing after each work out. I have even gone as far as buying new trainers and a workout suit! I have amazing upper body strength now, I feel powerful as I reach down to squatt with 10 kg dumbbells in each hand and power up. I can’t believe I can actually do it. I still hate the lunges but anyone who read celebrity magazines will know that they are the key to a firmer butt so I battle through it. Kane is relentless in his exercise routine with me. “Right today we’re doing a circuit,” he announces as I see various equipment scattered around the studio. We’re doing wall sits, ab planks, walking press ups, bicep curls... 30 second break between each circuit. You got that? Let’s go.” I have become reaquainted with my lungs, I never thought I could inhale so much air in each breathe, it almost hurts. But that’s the whole point of a personal trainer. They are there to push you to your limit... and then when you’re almost at that limit, the boundary get stretched that little bit further and you are pushed some more. I think back to a year ago and the exercises I was instructed to do then. It’s an amazing achievement to be able to do what I can do now, thanks to Elite Fitness and the dedication of Kane and Lewis. If you pardon the pun, they really run that extra mile for you.

4 Top Tips To Keep You Running Smoothly The Liverpool half marathon is fast approaching. To ensure you are in tip top condition, Elite’s Physiotherapist Lyndsey Rice tells you the basic rules to help prevent injury and what to do if you do obtain an injury. There are 4 basic rules to follow when completing any type of exercise to keep you in good condition, however in the majority of cases this advice is not followed.

1. Warm-up

Warming up is a crucial part of your pre-activity routine and its importance should not be underestimated. The primary aim of a warm up is to prepare your body and mind for exercise by increasing the body’s temperature, heart and respiratory rate. It will also increase the pliability of muscular tissue and the amount of circulating oxygen and nutrients, subsequently enabling more effective function during strenuous activity.

2. Stretching

for more information visit T: 0151 708 7377 7 York Street, Liverpool L1 5BN

Stretching is very important as it can help prevent injury, strains and post training muscle soreness. Elongating the muscles and tendons improves elastic rebound and therefore the ability of the tissue to contract more powerfully. How to stretch: • Slowly and gradually. DO NOT bounce! • Take the stretch to the point where the tissue feels tight and hold for 20-60 seconds. • DO NOT STRETCH COLD! Make sure your muscles are warm prior to beginning, as stretching is more effective when muscles are warm.

3. Cool Down

The purpose of a cool down is to return the body to its pre exercise state and assist recovery. Returning the heart and respiratory rate to normal levels helps prevent dizziness; whilst gentle exercises to return blood flow to its normal level helps flush toxins and lactic acid out of the tissues (these toxins are responsible for producing the next day muscle soreness we experience). The circulating blood flow also carries with it oxygen and nutrients to aid soft tissue growth and repair.

4. Correct Footwear

Ensuring you have a pair of well fitting and supportive pair of trainers is a crucial part of preventing injuries. You should visit a specialist shop who can analyse your running style and foot placement in order to recommend a pair to support your style of movement. If however you are unfortunate and suffer an injury, it is important that you seek timely professional advice. Appropriate and graded rehabilitation after injury is hugely significant in determining future performance and participation in sport. Remembering the PRICE (Protection – Rest – Ice – Compression – Elevation) regime will also enable speedy stabilisation of the injury until professional assessment can be sought.

If you would like any further information about prevention of injuries or have concerns about current injuries, you can contact Lyndsey on 07521952789 or

Mickey’s Music Festival strives to be the biggest concert experience to hit live family entertainment. “One song can touch millions of people around the world and Disney has been at the beat of this concept for years by making music a main ingredient of storytelling,” said Producer and CEO of Feld Entertainment Kenneth Feld. “In Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival we are celebrating with the Disney characters to a soundtrack of the latest sounds and chart-topping hits. We want our guests to walk away with lasting memories and singing these unforgettable melodies long after they leave the show.” Brought to the UK by the same producers of Disney On Ice and High School Musical: The Ice Tour, this brand new show comes on the heels of the hugely successful Disney Live! Three Classic Fairy Tales which toured throughout the country last year.

Disney Live! Mickey’s Music Festival, featuring an all star line-up of more than 25 Disney characters, begins with audiences watching a state-of-the-art video projection of the frenzy backstage which spills onto the stage as Mickey welcomes guests to his concert tour. Soon after, they will be transported to a new world of hip hop beats, dizzying acrobatics, flying carpets and magical transformations with Aladdin, Jasmine and Genie. Underwater is where the crowd will meet up with Ariel, Sebastian and their nautical pals to groove to the reggae rhythm. And, family and friends will stomp to the beat as Woody, Buzz and Jessie teach them how to boogie rodeo-style. Anyone can be a member of the band as giant-sized balloons fall from the ceiling in one scene and then in the next, Disney characters are dancing in the aisles.
