Dear Foundation Donors and Supporters,

The year 2019 was full of blessings - thanks to all our generous donors and visionary supporters! After three years in the works, the Northern Valley Law Enforcement Memorial project launched in Winter 2019. Through community philanthropy, the steering committee plans to raise $250,000 needed to build a memorial in honor of the brave Federal, Canadian, Minnesotan, and North Dakotan law enforcement officers within the Northern Valley who have given their lives in the line of duty. The memorial, located at Optimist Park, will be a place where the legacy of law enforcement members can be recognized and honored.

The Grand Forks Veterans Memorial Park committee also made big strides this year. Some highlights include installing the shelter pads and electrical work; beginning the carvings on the Memorial Wall and Obelisks; design for the Visitor Center completed; and approximately $425,000 in cash and in-kind donations was raised in 2019.

In 2019, the Rydell Skatepark committee continued to raise the funds needed to construct and complete Phase 2. Through grant funding and other opportunities, we are hopeful to begin Phase 2 in Summer or Fall of 2020.

ICON Sports Center celebrated five years of year-round ice in Grand Forks in 2019. With ice time rented in 2019 totaling over 3,837 hours, ICON Sports Center continues to grow and support our local hockey and figure skating community. Also in 2019, we began construction on the Chad Johnson Memorial Shooting Room, with an anticipated availability for use in the 2020 / 2021 youth hockey season.

Over the years, Choice Health & Fitness has been inspiring health & happiness, thanks to our generous donors. With over 365,000 member visits in 2019, we are fortunate to serve the Grand Forks region through the addition of new programs, strong partnerships, and facility repairs.

In 2019, Scheels Sports Complex’s fields were full Mondays through Thursdays with Cal Ripken Baseball 9 & 10 year old and Cal Ripken Baseball 11 &12 year-old league summer games while hosting traveling Cal Ripken teams for practice and games.

Thank you for another great year of helping us promote healthy lifestyles through amazing facilities and great programs that enhance the quality of life for our Grand Forks community.

Much gratitude,

June 2020

2019 HIGHLIGHTS AT CHOICE HEALTH & FITNESS

Since 2012, Choice Health & Fitness has been inspiring health & happiness within the Grand Forks region, thanks to our generous donors. Here are some highlights from the past year.

• Five new programs were added to our existing 100+ program offerings in 2019: Healthy & Active Kids, Fit Kids, Body Blast (adult programming), ConFITdent, and Cornhole League.

• Choice Health & Fitness renewed our contract with Grand Forks Public Schools to plan and execute their high school strength and conditioning program through the 2019-20 school year.

•We partnered with Altru Health System to offer a Stress-Free Living Retreat and with Sanford Health to offer an Exercise is Medicine program.

• The Kids Zone was redesigned as an activity and exercise area for youth ages 8-14 years old. This area is open during childcare hours and is supervised during Healthy & Active Kids and Fit Kids programming.

• In 2019, we added and replaced some cardio, free weight, and group exercise equipment.

• The tennis court repair and resurfacing project was completed and repair was done to the steel support beams within the aquatics area.

•In December, we had the windows tinted in the childcare, aquatics, and lobby to assist in improving energy efficiency, reduce the amount of glare from sunlight at the customer service desk, deli, cardio areas, childcare, and the pool.

• Choice Health & Fitness registered over 365,000 visits, in 2019. This does not include Tivity Health (SilverSneakers participants), some guest pass purchases, non-member league participants, UND Tennis and UND Tennis Club participants, birthday party room use, community room use, Altru CPG/Truyu clients, USDA-HNRC clients, tour groups, and spectators and participants who attended the events in our facility.

BUILDING FIELDS OF DREAMS

From the continuous pledged commitment, four diamonds were used by Cal Ripken 9 & 10 year-old league, Cal Ripken 11 & 12 year-old league, and all Grand Forks Area Youth Baseball travel teams 9-12 years old in the 2019 season!

In 2018 and 2019, we were able able to pour concrete pads for dugouts on diamond 3 & 4; extend the sidewalk entrance; run power to the scoreboards for operation; install building signage; and complete the main facility monument signage. We were also able to finish dugouts 1 & 2 as well as add a park entrance sign with the branded look to match other parks owned by the Grand Forks Park District.

In 2019, Grand Forks Area Youth Baseball Association filled the fields of Scheels Sports Complex Mondays through Thursdays with Cal Ripken Baseball 9 & 10 year old and Cal Ripken Baseball 11 &12 year-old league games during the summer. Scheels Sports Complex hosted traveling Cal Ripken teams for practice and games, as well as a fall baseball league, extending the baseball season into September for youth players.

If you have interest in getting more involved, finding more about our naming sponsorship opportunities that are available, or would just like to help make sure we are able to complete the project as planned, please contact us.

Honoring Our Veterans

VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK

The Veterans Memorial Park Committee is pleased to report another successful year with significant progress toward our goal of completing the Park. Below are some key accomplishments completed in 2019.

- The Park District had the Shelter Pads (5) placed in conjunction with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1426 who incorporated the electrical work. The Shelters were constructed by Structures Inc.

- The 130+ images to be carved on the Memorial Wall were made production ready by Dale Hughes’ Creature Works. The carving of the Obelisks (5) and the images on the Memorial Wall were contracted with Coldspring.

- JLG Architects completed the design for the General Al Palmer Visitor Center. The City of Grand Forks, the Park District, Webster, Foster & Weston, JLG Architects, and the VMP Committee coordinated the detailed planning necessary for the bid process to occur. The bid process will begin early in 2020.

- Gary Shields, our volunteer professional fund raiser and Board member, along with Chair Al Palmer and Board member Mike Hagen, have continued to reach out to more agencies and increase community awareness. Through their outstanding efforts approximately $425,000 in cash and in-kind donations were raised in 2019. During the year 146 Memorial Stones were sold bringing the total since the beginning of our campaign to 621.

THE CAMPAIGN

Through community philanthropy, Veterans Memorial Park (located NW of the Columbia Mall) will be built as an outdoor gathering place for veterans, military members, families and the community to celebrate, recognize, remember, and honor the lives of those who are serving or have served in the U.S. Military.
