PROLOGUE

CONTENTS THE WITNESS Developing Nanjing Daxing Palace Plaza : The Hinge Between Presidential Palace And Urban Territory

As I observed during my college years, the history layer is disappearing quietly but at a surprising speed in many modern Chinese cities. While fighting for "greener" scenarios of urban land, we tend to sacrifice some old but memorable places for future development. New parks are built but no one visits the new places since their connection with the land had been cut off. We should not erase our trace of city while planning for the future. So far, my academic interest has been exploring how those traces of city could be interpreted with the complexity of modern landscape while intensifying the sense of place. In my project"The Witness", I proposed a hypothesis: is it possible to translate the sense of the place with landscape language? My intervention on topography emphasizes the existing traces and understand the past, the present and the future through daily perception encourage daily perception. In the Second Project, the former freight terminal area was transformed into a multifunctional public space by developing place-based aesthetics and improving the ecological function of places. In "Vertical Runway, Horizontal park" project, I discussed the possibility of revitalizing an abandoned airport. To solve the disconnecting issues, I introduced a new transportation tool - EVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) - which will be produced from on-site planting material. After systematic studies of the traditional airport fabric, I decided to propose a new planning frame from the production fabric. This new system will provide interactive learning opportunities for visitors and the local community to recall their memories and refresh their cognition of the land.

History layer is disappearing quietly but with surprising speed in modern Chinese cities and urban open space is not responsive to site and people. How can we preserve the sense of place and identity of site? The project of The Witness,developing the hinge between Nanjing Presidential Palace and urban territory attempt to work with existed identity of the place,representing and reinterpreting the character of the pre-existence. The Nanjing Daxing Palace Plaza, locates in the middle between Presidential Palace and city cultural center,was previously occupied by defense wall of city since 229 A.D. Today, the 16-acre site serves as a multi-functional plaza to all kinds of visitors.However, this site is completely neglected its historical identity and separate different functional areas from each other. Therefore,my intervention on topography emphasize the existing traces and encourage daily perception to understand the past, the present and the future.

Existing condition Disappearing History Layer Three historical elements are blended in the site: The historical wall of the ancient Six Dynasties; The modern history of the Nanjing Presidential Palace and the Central Hotel; The modern cultural history of the Nanjing Library and the Jiangsu Provincial Art Museum. But the entire venue is lacking in vitality and there is no historical atmosphere.

Abandoned Freight Terminal

Wuxi, a city crossed by the Grand Canal since 631 A.D, was built with the materials transported through the canal in ancient times and railway in the industrial age. The site is a former freight terminal area in the city of Wuxi. Twenty years ago, it was the largest train terminal in East China, supplying steel coal from the Grand Canal to the terminal that was about to be transported by train to Wuxi's factories. With the development of modern urbanization, the site has lost its function as cargo transportation, became back corner of the city, disconnected from the urban fabric. Instead of transform this place into a place with new identity. I decided to preserve these industrial infrastructure identity in order to retransform this grey infrastructure area without erase the trace. Therefore, by reserving and emphasizing existing railway pattern, the former freight terminal area was transformed into a multi-functional public space that arouses inhabitant's group memories and cultural identity through daily activities.

Viewing experience in wetland alley We recovered the river edge for providing an outline and structure for the infrastructure of green space and integrated natural system and building green corridor for linking with the mountain and the river, and reconnecting the city and people to the waterfront, whicn will give the people access to a new green natural water's edge.

People sitting on the high-speed rail and looking out the window will see the people at the pier in the distance. The New Year’s bell rings the LED screen on the tower crane and shows Happy New Year. The Abandoned Freight Terminal finally transform into a multi-functional public space that arouses inhabitant's group memories and cultural identity through original railway pattern and reprogramming infrastructure. 19

The site is an abandoned military airport which its runway is in the center of the site. Surrounding the airport runway is a massive farmland.The economy, environment and citizen living of the whole site is severely restricted by the existence of the airport. With the decommission of the airport, how to reorganize this vast horizontal ground become an issue. Therefore, we introduced a new transportation tool - EVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) - which will be produced from on-site planting material. The whole production process is open to the public, and new programs are designed accordingly to provide recreational and educational values. To reinforce the pattern of the new airport and the site, after systematic studies of the traditional airport fabric, we decide to propose a new planning frame from the production fabric. This new system will provide interactive learning opportunities for visitors and the local community to recall their memories and refresh their cognition of the land.

The paticipation runway provides a variety of spaces for sports and other recreational activities by converting the original airport runway marking.New programs are designed accordingly to provide experiential and educational values.At the same time,I triy to express the historical stage of the relationship between airport and landscape through the runway. This new system will provide interactive learning opportunities for visitors and the local community to recall their memories and refresh their cognition of the land. 32

Perspective Of EVTOL Experience Platform The enlarged plan shows a plan of the EVTOL experience platform on the center of the site. On the base of the runway was added a series of marking in order to create plenty of recreational activities. Also, people can visit pitch or technology museum in order to have fun. And some of the visitors can enter into productive landscape to know how those crops grows and what is the raw material of those amazing aircraft.

Vacant Roof In Shanghai urban area, government began to vigorously promote the Green Roof Project in order to supplement the shortage of urban green space.However, a large amount of vacant roof in urban areas are losing their opportunity to contribute as a green resource because the reconstruction could be costly to the local government.

Lack of Open space

At the same time, China's fitness industry has boomed this year with a new demand emerging: rooftop fitness, which exactly matches the Green Roof policy. By proposing pre-constructed and modular fitness space, the construction cost is significantly reduced and allow the roof greening to grow faster; the responsive mechanism is designed to collect and analyze user comments via big data so that we can realize the adaptive management easily with less maintenance cost. In this way, we developed the project as a multi-process operating system, and a dynamic mechanism to makes the landscape itself profitable.
