Week Three

Kolerevic described three fundamental type of fabrication techniques in the reading. Outline the three techniques and discuss the potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling. (150 words max)

According to Kolerevic, the three fundamental type of fabrication techniques are subtractive, formative and additive. Subtractive fabrication invovles the removal of a specific volume of material from solids, using electro-, chemically-, or mechanically-reductive processes. The additive fabrication invovles incremental forming by adding material in a layer by layer fashion, in a process which is the converse if milling. Formative fabrication invovles mechanical forces, restricting forms. heat and steam are to a material so as to form it into the desire shape through reshaping or deformation, which can be axially or surface constrained. Computer Numeric controlled fabrication with parametric modelling has the potential to create much more convenience and accurate fabrication, by the reason of direct input of the data from digital model to the fabrication machines that generates a way more flexible enviornment for modelling, that you could manipulate and preview the outcome through digital softwares and aviods slow hand crafting and trail and error processes.

Surface Creation

Quick design of surfaces

Quick creations of these simple surfaces using the surface script. Trying to create as much as possible in order to generate the best two surfaces for task 1, in many considerations.

Week Four Panels & Waffle

Panels on both side has a diistrubution either on the size of openning or the direction it is facing. The panels on the right hand side has a rhombus opening whereas the panels on the left hand side has mutiple triangular opennings. I was focusing on 3D panels on both side to complete the comparison for different patterns and opennings on panels.

The waffle structure in isometric view seems firm and striaght forward, however, from parallel pr perspective view, the whole structure is twisted and forming an unique pattern.

Comparing to hand cutting in last year’s fodr, laser cuntting is the savior of mankind. The machine’s accuracy and its convienience surely eliminates hand working. Finishing the design in Rhino and Grasshopper and keep everything in layers either cut or etch then leave the machine to do the hard work, the best of laser cutting is the apperance of final outcome will not be extremely different to the model in digital softwares.

Boolean Script

Week Five

For the Boolean script, the objective is to create large variety of diiferent three dimensional shapes and manipulate them in order to form interesting sections through boolean difference. By using Grasshopper, I get to test out serval interesting 3D shapes such as, octagon, circular shapes, trapezoid and platonic solid, however, the final determintation of the shape is platonic, the reason for choose this shape is due the complication that creates a unique openning from different sections. More importatnly, to take a further step of morphing the platonic solids within the bounding box, the grid within this 150mm x 150mm bounding box has maximized its use of conversion of space, whether to use the 3D grid component to manipulate the distrubution of platonic solids as well as using deconstruct berp to increase or decrease the number of the shapes. 8


Week Five

Isometric

My final isometric for boolean object was trimmed serval times by a brep that is shown in the workshop. The main reason of choosing this section as my final isometric for task is due to the shape platonic solid is an extremely complicated shape, cutting through these shapes forms small yet sharp edges. In this section, every platonic solid contain a different opening shape. which even cause all the openings cannot be recognized clearly when there are no further details or annotations. By the unclear openings in make2d process, I used photoshop and illustrator to classify my final isometric drawing. Firstly, the section has been cut through are all represented in white in order to pop out the openings and clean up the picture for a bit. Secondly, to show the openings more clearly, I used isometric lines to form a tunnel looking panel to represent the openings for each of the openings, also illustrating either the depth and the sense of space of the section. I also used heavy black line weights intersections that do not interact with the surface envelope and created the sense of shadow coming into the spaces. To summarise, the most interesting way to represent my boolean object in my perspective is to explore and manipulate shapes and openings in three-dimensional space.

Task 01 Matrix

For my task one matrix, I have tested out a large amount of different outcomes in grasshopper and rhino. The surface I chosen was the first one in the first role, the main reason was it would make the interior waffle structure twisted and form a unique looking, although the two surface looks almost aligned in isometric perspective, it forms a unique shape in every different perspective. For my paneling, the reason of choosing the first two shapes in the third role is fairly simple, to allow sunlight in which eventually creates a series of interesting sun path and shadow rotation throughout the day. 10

Task 02 Matrix

For task two I played with several interesting three-dimensional shapes in grasshopper such as octagonal, circular, trapezoidal and Platonic solids. My final decision of the shape is Platonic, which illustrated in the third role of my matrix. The reason for choosing this shape is because the complexity comes from the unique openness of different parts. More importantly, in order to further deform the Plato solid within the bounding box, the grid in the bounding box maximizes the use of spatial transformations, whether using a 3D mesh component to manipulate Plato’s solid distribution and using deconstruction brep to increase or decrease the number of shapes as shown in the first two roles of my matrix. 11

The progress of handcrafting the waffle and panel structure with my family. There was a lot of trial and error happened during the formation, whereas, unmatch panels or unfoldable etch line and so on. But the outcome is still acceptable :)
